You are a great source for information. I knew there was a way to refill the small canisters but I wasn’t sure how. Thanks for the instructions. I will feel confident in doing it myself. I hate wasting money.
@@enigmaticnomadics You didn't explain well why to NOT use the freezer, or why not used a wooden dowel rod to relieve pressure from the main valve. Seems you'll damage that cheap relief valve over time.
That was perfect timing. I was searching for the perfect way to fill green tanks. This video made you look like you have the "IT" factor! Thanks, Happy Holidays to you.
If gave you a hand cramp I can't imagine I could ever do this handy way to refill but it's still good to know just in case I may have to some day! Thank you 👍👍👍.
Terrific tip. I too have watched multiple options for this and have wondered what really works. When doing it I knew the bottle was only partially filling. Thanks
Freezer method most definitely does work and it’s less work that this one. I weigh before and after and get 1lb almost exactly. Freeze small bottles and use a “donor” tank that is warm. I refill in Summer so the tank doesn’t need warming. Take only one bottle at a time from the freezer and they will fill perfectly without clumsily fiddling around with tiny relief valves.
The beginning of your video remined me of the famous Billy Mays, "But Wait, There's more" !! Great video Jamie, I didn't know you could refill those small cans. Thanks !!
Thanks. I have used the freezer method. The key is to have the big tank setting in the sun before filling the frozen bottle. The difference in temperature will cause the warmer gas ( high pressure ) to go into the frozen bottle ( low pressure ) takes just a minute. Your method is great for when the tanks are same temperature . Always enjoy your videos and your giving spirit .
Thanks Jamie, this is very timely since we need to refill our canisters soon! Lisa and I enjoyed reconnecting with you at the Rtr! Until we meet again...celebrate life and keep playing your guitar!
good video good that you mentioned to open the schrader valve had a propane powered truck years ago and when filling you had to open a bleed valve to fill OR the tank would only fill to a certain level
Thanks so much! We have the adapter, but I've not been comfortable doing it because it doesn't seem to work. Relieving the air within the bottle to allow the propane makes sense! Thanks for the awesome videos.
You are awesome Jamie, I got one of these connecter last month from Wally World, although I haven't had to use it yet it's there when I do need it, because of your video I can do it myself, thank you so much for the tutorial! On the package I have it's called 'Propane Tank Refill Adapter' Refill 1lb propane cylinder, at the top right and left corners it has Mr Heater L?S and F276178 R/S cost $4.00 or $5.00 approx. Thanks again, happy trails to ya!
i use the freezer method and never have any issues, in fact i usually have mine get over filled and I have to watch them so they don't. But to each their own.
Thanks for this! A few people sent us this link as a recommendation on how to do this. The one issue we have is that we are full-time vanliving so we don't have a place to store the "donor" tank.
Consider getting a 11 lb tank. Smaller and more portable. I like mine cuz I can put it in a backpack and fill it on the motorcycle. See it here: amzn.to/2rlZC57
Cool, where do you get the valve stems for the propane tanks it you can uses a valve stem remover tool..that you uses to take off valve stems to car tires. Then where do you get the valve stem for the propane tanks.. because putting the wrong car ones on it just recks the safety feature of the tank. So not say i ever have to add a new one but would like to know if i have to where i can get the right valve stem for it. The only place i am think is maybe a gas/plumbing supply store?
thanks for the info, bought a couple of those adapter years ago but never used them. now I know how. PS- everyone says to freeze bottle first, but your way makes more sense.
Great tips on the soap water and checking if stem valve by pushing it... definitely check it , if its leaking then obviously just buy a new one don't take the chance.
Thanks Sea Mammal! Another tip I really like is to turn the fan all the way on, to my van heater. That way when I turn the key to roll up or down the windows, I don't leave it on by accident and drain the battery, cuz I hear the blower. Best, ~J
@@enigmaticnomadics thanks. Been filling mine to 20 percent till now lol. I was too lazy to look into it because I just use it for bug fogger and soldering but ran across your video. There sure are a lot of morons in the comments. You try and help people and get crapped on smh
I use hemastates. I also let a little pressure off at a time. The little valve is a pressure relief, have had them "leak" till pressure goes down to set level
Did you hold the valve open the entire time or just once in a while during filling? How do you know when it is filled? Will vapor come out of the valve?
That propane Coleman's bottle full weight is 31 oz. Use a kitchen digital weight scale. I need help in find a better forceps to pull that little tinny stem. I have ordered several over the internet. Can you give me any Ideas for a stem puller.
LOL … reminds me of a friend that was looking inside a box full of fireworks in the dark … with a lighter. As we were all ducking for cover while yelling at him to get that lighter out of the box!!!
You said to have the valve at the 10:00 or 2:00 position. It was hard to see with your hand in the way, but it looked to me like it was in the 8:00, or 4:00 possession. Being that it is the over-flow position, it seems that wound make a big difference how much it filled the tank.
I've done it this way for a few years now and the problem I have run in to every now and then is that the pressure relief valves don't always re seat causing a small leak. The newer the tank the less chance you have of that valve not re seating. I ended up switching to the flame king refillable tanks. It's just easier and faster. You spend a few more bucks on the initial purchase but in the long run you're still saving money refilling tanks vs buying new ones and you don't lose a lb of propane here and there when the pressure relief valves don't seal.
I found a pair of angled forceps work the best instead of angled needle nose pliers. Hardware stores have them and bait and tackle suppliers, they use them for tieing flies.
I have worked in the hazmat compressed gas business for over a decade..A strong suggestion and words on staying safe..the company I work for had a major gas plant fire/inferno. The lesson learned was during the hottest part of the summer, about 100+ degrees, some Liquid propane and other flammable gas cylinders began spilling and venting exessive gas liquid and vapor which found an ignition source. It was deduced that they were over filled because the vent valves can wear out or fail. Now the company saftey procedure is to always, ALWAYS check the Tare weight of the bottle and only fill exactly the amount of liquid weight allowed to prevent overfilling that triggers to much venting or over flow of liquid from the valve. Also flammable gas should never be stored in an enclosed space especially in heat..example a car or trunk.
So bottom line is you have to open that pressure relief valve a little to let the pressurized air out until actual liquid propane starts to shoot out and which point it's pretty much full ..??
Instead of freezing the 1 lb can. If you don't have freezer around , can you instead bring inside the 20 lb cylinder to warm up and put outside the 1 lb can to cool it ?
Well shit. My little valve wouldn’t stop leaking after trying this. I kept fiddling with it trying to let it resent and it would not. Any tips for when that happens? Currently it’s sitting outside slow leaking out all the propane I fought to get inside AND I guess I need to go buy a new full can.
Thanks Jamie, want to meet you one of these days, just heading out winter 18, don't want to see snow this year... As for the Tanks I load my green cans while the big ones are full, once they get down I use them for my grill/heater because they don't fill the little ones as good any more... Thanks again, Nytro~~
How do you keep the green bottles from leaking? After I use them on my Coleman single burner vertical stove, I disconnect the stove from the bottle and I hear the propane leaking out. Is there any way to stop this. Thanks, great vid.
I've seen some hoses that have the same ends as the adapter, and am wondering if I should go that route, rather than using the short adapter, which would give me more room to work with my hands and tools, but on the down side, this would mean some waste due to whatever will be left in the hose.
i have refilled my little green tanks probably around 15 times each and they are still doing fine, i don't pull the valve out when i fill mine, and just leave valve open on main tank 1 min
This guy is right.. I've filled propane forlift bottles.we just set them upright and when liquid came out relief valve on top it was full. Super cold...wear gloves.
Serious question, I've heard you're supposed to use a filter on some appliances with the large tanks. By filling the bottles yourself have you ever had a issue with contamination in the filled bottle? Thanks
The filter is required because the hose, under pressure, sheds tiny bits inside, into the heater valve orifice which causes clogging, hence the green bottles do not cause this. Nor would a pressure regulator at the tank side of the hose.
You show the best how to videos, you show the details so people can actually attempt the project and be successful - your refilling method is just like refilling portable oxygen bottles from a huge oxygen bottle for patients. As long as you do it outside and and follow rules, no heat, open flames, smoking, etc. I have never seen anyone have a problem, common sense just like you always show everyone. Thanks so much.
I tried that method on a few cylinders, yes they did fill , but all the relief valves never resealed and leaked.. Soap or spit test the main valve and relief valve after refilling. Some tanks just will not refill, or will only refill part way for some reason. Chill the tanks as instructed and refill slowly.
My experience exactly. Those mass produced relief valves are not meant to actually be opened except as a last resort to prevent a bottle explosion in a fire.
Just my 2 cents put in here... its true alot of these tanks will leak but the "Coleman" ones won't. I've refilled mine too reusing Coleman 1 lb tanks. Haven't had leaks yet. Have you ever tried them? BUT i followed a mechanics advice too only do it 4 or 5 times maximum cuz they are built well but not meant for long term use.
Thank You! 😊 Can you show us what we need to attach a 20 Lb tank to Our Mr Buddy Heater? I tent camp and will leave the tank outside the tent with the Heater inside. My tent ⛺️ is far from air tight. But I need the heat to last on through out the night.👌
Ok Thank you I live close to Home Depot so I thought because they sell Mr Buddy I would go in and ask for help. I will make sure I get the Filter and A braided line and Thank you
I bought refillable propane bottles online...they are the thick shelled ones like a heavy tank.....it's just for ease of mind....I wouldn't refill the thin walled green ones, not because it blows up, but because of no sure fire way to make sure it's properly filled or overfilled. Maybe manufacturers would get the hint, and go "green" if people started buying the heavier grade ones.
What a great video to watch. I have used this method several times. If near an empty large tank, tip the large tank to empty all the propane out of the larger tank, When I have used this method, it took 30 seconds to fill a 16 oz cylinder. 10 minutes is not right at all. You are not pulling the vale stem out far enough to open the valve. I get a full tank weight of 30.5 oz. every time.
I had some one pound tanks I wanted to take the valve out of the side so I made a tool to unscrew it , worked great. I used a hole punch and cut a slit in it so it will fit on the valve. Welded a small metal handle on it. A tire valve tool will not work.
I would like to add something of my own experience. We refill the little bottles too, using them in a Little Buddy. We have had two Little Buddy fires. Our first Little Buddy was bought 5 years ago. It lasted two years then had a fire flare that burned the elements and top side, from reusing green bottles. That was 2013. So we got another one with a two year warranty. That one just recently flared and ruined itself. (After three years) The only reason we could think of was that the threads on the bottles get worn after a time, and when it is loaded to the Little Buddy, if not perfectly seated, a fire results. So, we made a promise to throw out the little green bottles more regularly. Of course, it says on the bottle not to refill, but they are very expensive to replace.
i purchased the "snozzle", when following the instructions provided, i get about 1/10th full in the small bottle. im going to give your method a try, thanks! but it is kinda pitiful that when i follow the directions that came with the adapter, it doesnt work.
Since uploading this video, I now recommend this method instead. ua-cam.com/video/RlOsCYA9cGc/v-deo.html

A pair of 90º locking hemostats will do the trick nicely for operating the pressure relief valve during fill. Thanks Jamie for another helpful video.
That's a better idea than what I was using.
The reason for the air gap is pressure. Liquid cannot be pressurised. But your are correct that is the proper way to fill bottles.

gee, who wuda thunk by turning it off and on would extend the 6 hour estimate ..........you must be a genius !
I use a pair of long straight hemostats to reach through to grab and pull the valve.
Thats the move.
I had some one pound tanks I wanted to take the valve out of the side so I made a tool to unscrew it , worked great.
I used a hole punch and cut a slit in it so it will fit on the valve. Welded a small metal handle on it.
A tire valve tool will not work.
Awesome I'll try it!
same hose what you connect to the outside grill to the 20 lb propane tank,a
I'll check it out. That would be MUCH easier. Thanks Z!
Get you some hemostats. That's what I use. I dont hold it as long I just burp it let it fill then burp it let it fill. You are 100 % right.
I did have one leak real bad once it was a black one not the green ones..but you are totally right it works just as you described
Hemostats..for sure
Hemostats are definitely the way to go. I didn't know about them when i made this video.
Big Biddy? Is that a spelling error? I have saved your vid. Thanks for making and posting.
i purchased the "snozzle", when following the instructions provided, i get about 1/10th full in the small bottle. im going to give your method a try, thanks! but it is kinda pitiful that when i follow the directions that came with the adapter, it doesnt work.
