Same. I have a phone interview in a couple of hours and I have no idea why I got here. Also not trying to become a hair stylist OR have my hair cut like this.
Because it's captivating, lol! I feel like I can cut a bob now! Only the best scissors I have are for fabric and paper, my combs are from the dollar store and I don't even own a blowdryer 🤣
but I still don't know what the dog ear effect looks like. it wasn't pointed out. I didn't even get to. compare it myself. he rotated the head t too fast.
Mannequin heads don't usually have prominent ears so its difficult to show him tucking the hair back, but its basically the added weight/bulk that occurs from over-directing the hair too much, around too many 'corners' as he was saying. That type of over-directing would result in cutting a bit less hair so it results in a line which appears less clean. Edit: You can click the settings on the video and change the speed if that helps see it better also :)
Yeah, I definitely agree with you; he needs to take more time explaining it, and return to the original problem to show how it was corrected. I just wanted to try and help explain it a bit XD
Captain Fangirl well there needs to be some kind of explanation for those who don't know so they know what they need to k ow before they see their hair dresser
I trained as a hairdresser over 20 years ago, and I wish you had been my mentor/trainer. You explain very well, and your cutting skills are on point. Keep up the good work! 😘 xxx
The reason to spend more on a blow dryer: 'I would recommend an expensive blow dryer, it dries hair similarly as any other blow dryer but I really like this blow dryer'
He didn't say he recommended it. He said, it's definitely an expensive hair dryer, it dries similar to other dryers but he likes it, and he recommends good scissors over an expensive hair dryer.
Mannequins always have nicer hair because it’s sewn in to an exact science. So, if you were to look at the “root” area on the mannequin you would see that the hair comes through in little bundles, several hairs coming out of one hole, like a Barbie doll on a larger scale. And it has to be uniform in thickness and weight throughout the head. Our heads, on the other hand aren’t perfect, because they’re natural. But that’s a good thing. If you had hair like that mannequin people would say, “nice wig”.
To the people who don't get the "dog ear effect". At 9:09-9:10 he circles his finger around the "dog ear effect". You can stop the video and see if you notice anything different to at 9:11 when he shows with his finger and then his whole hand the line on the other side of the hair. You can go back and forth as many times as you need. It's pretty clear.
Ketutar Jensen I have curly hair and wear it bobbed. Today’s stylists just don’t know how to cut curly hair anymore... or do they have a clue how to dry it! I want to show stylists this this video! Coz they give the dog ears all the time & it’s super annoying. Thanks for making this video!
I'm having trouble telling the difference, but I did have a stylist refuse to color my hair towards the ends in front of my face because she didn't want it to dog ear. I still don't know what dog ear means.
Look behind the ear at the end results of the video. The dog eared version has a bulk behind the ear, slightly sticking out breaking the even line, or more the even texture of the cut. When you look at the other side there is no such thing, the line is even in texture everywhere. Hope this helps.
i have no idea why a stylist wouldn't colour all your head ? it doesn't have anything to do with causing or stopping dog ear effect ??? and I've been a stylist/salon owner for over 25 yrs .... never heard that one before ... maybe i don't understand what you mean ...
You might want to do drawings on paper indicating more clearly what you mean, because I'm not gettin' this, and I wonder how many others need more help too.
If you looked at both sides, the one with a traveling guide was smooth and properly cut the first time. There was an obvious bump and irregularity in the first side he cut.
Gwen Ap Mannanan the commenter obviously understands the difference between the doggy ear look and the preferred bob (it's obviously shown in the video) but the problem is the guy explained a clock method of cutting and that per isn't visual, it would be nice if the camera was shown looking down at the head of hair so we can see the way he splits the hair according to his visual clock in his mind
Mele Paasi, "obviously"? There's nothing obvious in "what you mean" and "I'm not gettin' this". What "you mean" with what? What is "this" the person isn't getting? "This" could be the whole video and downbntout doesn't get anything. Or it could be the thing JazminMarieee is talking about, it could be the thing Gwen is talking about, it could be what you are talking about, or something else. IT'S NOT MATT WHO NEEDS TO BE MORE CLEAR, IT'S DOWNBNTOUT. Also, Matt said "if you have questions, ask them in the comments. "I'm not getting this, you aren't clear enough" is not a question, and it's really difficult to try to figure out what is it the person needs help with. I got everything he said, even though I am not a hairdresser. MY HUSBAND GOT EVERYTHING HE SAID, and he's not a hairdresser either, or especially interested in hairdos, and he's extremely visual thinker. MATT EVEN SHOWED WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT! It couldn't be any clearer if drawn on paper! So, no, I don't think Matt needs to be more clear, and I don't think you should go around laughing at people who do their best to help even when the help and clarification is asked in a very muddled manner. There's nothing obvious in Downbntout's comment, except that he/she doesn't "get this". Maybe Downbntout would need to draw on paper what he/she means and think hard about what he/she doesn't understand, and THEN ASK THAT. In a polite manner without demands and putting the blame of misunderstanding on someone else.
I get it. For those who dont know. In a graduated bob the line should be a solid diagonal going down towards the front. Not a bob and then suddenly gets long. (Like a flappy dog ear hanging down) this \ not --\/
This video blew my mind! I work in a strictly walk-in salon and we do so many of these cuts. And you just knocked out like 10-15 extra minutes of work, thank you! Definitely clicking "Subscribe"
Hey all, just wanted to note for those that may not understand when he says the term 'dog ear'... it's when the sides of your hair that fall over your ear area are too thick/ heavy, causing the overall outline of your hair to look like a beagle, or some other long-eared dog. Lol I always called it the Christmas Tree Effect but it's all the same. Your hair looks weighted down at the bottom, too flat up top. Hope this description helps. 💗
Thank you for these videos because by u doing these cuts different ways it helps u to really understand what ur doing instead of just cutting to be cutting. U get an in depth understanding that u don't get in cosmetology school!
If your client has thick hair, she'll be back in 3 weeks to get rid of the dog ears no matter how great you cut the hair the first time. (Speaking from a client's perspective only)
not if its done properly and thinned and textured . she will be back when its time for a new cut. And some styles need upkeep sooner then others. That's why its so important to Learn these things to be the best stylist u can be ....but that takes time and wanting to learn ...I've been a stylist 25 yrs and seen some at 30 yrs and they still do basic strait cuts with no texture or anything ..... I'm so happy to see these videos out because many schools only teach the basics ....and everything else you learn when you apprentice and from other stylists ....and if you don't get placed with a good stylist when you apprentice it really can affect your career ...
Kittenpurrrs whenLoved every time I go in for a cut after 6 weeks they ask why the previous stylist didn't thin it. I just have crazy thick hair. The stylists are often surprised at just how thick my hair is
Mary Hines maybe they need to not only thin near the ends and go farther up the hair shaft ?....so it doesn't grow back in 6 weeks and get confused with just textured ends? .....or your not being thinned out properly ....we usually don't go to past half way cuz short hair has more spring to it and if u cut too close to the scalp you have it sticking up out of the hair that's laying flat which can be frustrating to always see peices of hair sticking out looking like its breakage ....but if your thinned out good we don't have to do it every 6 weeks cuz hair only grows a little over a cm each month ....OR you have such thick hair that even your thinned hair to a different stylist feels thick lol....I've seen thick hair where the amount of hair on the head is A LOT and also the hair itself is thick and has what's called a medulla inside ...not everyone has that ....and it can be very springy so have to be careful not to thin to close to the scalp but you can if you have a style that needs to stick up and it works great for them styles....I've also seen clients who's hair is soooooo thick that you actually have to go in and cut very thin full strip sections along the hair right down to the scalp to take out bulk and the other hair can lay flatter over top......and this takes up keep obviously and can be drastic looking if they make the line too thick and your hair moves and the longer hair covering it WILL show but it sure takes out bulk if your hair is THAT thick that you need this drastic measure ..... ALSO washing your hair with only cold water helps the cuticle stay flat and apear thinner and the type of products make a big difference. There are many shampoos and other products out now that are for thick hair.Rinsing with apple cider vinegar helps some ppl too. I would never use bleach on extreamly thick hair either.Bleach swells the cuticle making it thicker.I'd stick with only colour if my client wanted a change. This is all just what I'd do as I stylist ...we all have our own ideas and opinions and thats what makes all of us our own "artist" and have the clientele we do and how much we should charge. My cuts start at 100.00 and I will refuse to do something a client may want if I know it won't look good or it will cause damage. My clients are walking advertisements of my work.I care about the health of the hair and if it makes me lose money by putting bleach on very thick hair knowing it will only make it even more less manageable then so be it.lol. I'd let my client find a stylist that doesn't care or would take the time to consult.Clients come to me for my professional advice and that's what they get no matter how much I need to explain to them why I won't do something. This usually earns their respect and makes them realize i really take my profession seriously. So if a stylist isn't thinning your hair enough you should really tell them.It also helps to find one good stylist you trust and stick with them. The more they do your hair the better they learn your hair. Your so lucky to have thick hair .....some ppl don't feel they are, but when you see someone with thin hair crying cuz they can't hide thin spots ughh it breaks my heart. Sorry if this comment is so long ..lol..just had so much to say 😊 and am chatty today. So used to talking from 8 am to 9pm with clients and I'm off today hahhaa. Good luck with your thick hair. And i hope you feel Lucky and beautiful to have it.xo
I have shoulder length hair and they do have to thin it a lot. To the point that it looks like they cut 6 inches off. I do only go to the beauty college so I can afford trims every 6 weeks and perhaps they're being conservative. When I had a short cut (like in the video), I was back every four weeks to get rid of the dog ears because the back grew way faster than the front. I've had my hair colored, cut, and permed by students and NEVER left unhappy though Also, it's -30 sometimes (with windchill). I can rinse with lukewarm water at best. I do only wash 2x a week unless I style my hair with a lot of product so it's certainly not as damaging as your every day/every other day washers. My usual style is an updo of some variety because I wear a hair net all day. On another note, my hair doesn't hold color or heat styles well. When I curl my hair, I have to set the curling iron up to 300 degrees and hair spray the crap out of my head to get the curl to hold for more than 5 minutes. It takes me around 1hr to curl my entire head (lots of hair). Am I the only person who struggles with this?
This was so fascinating. I moved tow years ago from my fabulous hair stylist who always always always gave me perfect a-line bobs and lobs. The new hair stylists I've found seems to struggle with my cut. I never knew it was called a "dog ear" but that is absolutely what happens to my hair half the time she's done it. The" good" side you did is what i use to always get, and the "bad" side is what I end up with now. She's young, and has some talent and I love her as a person, but my hair just can't with her anymore. Gotta try to find a new person!
I never knew there was a name for this!!! I had a Bob once and whenever I tried styling my hair it never looked right, I always thought it was just the way my hair was but now I know it was the person who cuts my hair!!!
My daughter has been rocking a short bob haircut for several months now. Its been cut professionally three times, but in between each cut she and I have cut it together. I know the basics about haircuttung: section, clipping, and how to cut layers. This shows me how to do it much better. Only difference is she likes a flatter angle with shorter length in front.
I'm a new stylist and I can't tell you how many times I've tried to figure out why my angled bobs looked like that. You're incredible. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. It helps immensely 💜
xMourningStar I'm a hair stylist-- dog ear effect is when the front is longer and less shapely than the back. It gives the appearance of just hanging there and has no real smooth transition. It looks extra heavy and guests never know what to do with it since it literally just hangs. That's why it's important to use the traveling guide for most a-lines to get a more seamless transition.
I really enjoy your videos and teaching style. if I may suggest one thing? could you slow down just a bit when you disect the cut? show us exactly what you're doing at least once before continuing to breeze through the cut
I like this “deconstructing the haircut” teaching approach! As a newly licensed cosmetologist, it is so educational to actually see the difference! It’s one thing to realize that your haircut didn’t have the hoped-for result, but to SEE specifically what happened and what you need to do if you want to change the outcome is so instructive! Thank you! Hoping for more! Maybe how to avoid those holes that can happen in front on layered haircuts!?
I have been trying to get every new hairstylist to acknowledge this horrific effect that happens to my hair. I HATE it and nobody can fix it. 😭 or they dont know how.
"The dog ear affect" I always thought was when ladies want really graduated "stacked bobs" almost disconnected bobs. (Think of that Victoria Beckham really dramatic bob that was really popular a couple years ago) In the nape it's really really tight and on the sides and top it's really long, and depending on the persons density and texture if you leave too much weight on the sides or the person doesn't have a nice round head shape. It can be very unflattering especially if the front and sides are kept dramatically longer/heavier when the client turns their head the sides just hang and flop around like a flappy eared dog ...
I am an artist with a keen interest in hair. I've learned to cut my own hair by watching and learning from youtube videos. I 'll watch this again and again to understand what makes for a more precise angled bob, which is my haircut style. Thanks for the instructions.
OMG!!! That style of bob is exactly the style I've been trying unsuccessfully to get since I was in my mid-20s. Every time I go in and ask for it from hairstylists, they can't seem to get it, and I've never found a satisfactory photo until now. Thank you!!!!
Great video ...I've been a stylist/salon owner over 25 yrs ....and when i took my course i wish they taught more then the basics ...but thank god i was in a great salon to apprentice and learnt so many techniques .... I dont know what they learn now in the course but i hope they show videos like yours. Great job too 👍so professional
well ...you can cut the basic style ....but there's still work that goes into this if your a good stylist ....like point cutting , slide cutting thinning etc ....that's how me make it our own and so the client has movement and flow when they move their head .....cuz every head of hair is different .... so just doing this basic cut across style would be ok but not great ..... kinda like when ppl cut bangs at home and then wonder why they are heavy and don't sit right or wispy and soft and blended lol
I feel like you are the Bob Ross of hair cutting videos. I have no reason to be watching this, but I can't turn away. LOL. You have more energy than Bob, but you make it look like any of us (who aren't even cosmetologists) could cut this style.
You make this cut look so easy. It’s almost impossible to find anyone where I live that can do this. I’ve worn a variation of this cut for the past 6-7 years. Do you have any advice to help me - help my stylist achieve this cut so that it lays right and isn’t so heavy and thick? Love watching you.
Beautiful...thank you! Sometimes when I would try using a traveling guide I would end up with the hair too short in the dog ear section. I think your exsample explained the guidelines very well. When I spend more on a blow dryer it doesnt last any longer, but they are nice to have!
I like the back and right side of the mannequin head but I love how the left side look from the front view because it is longer and has more hair. Thanks for sharing.
To the ones who don't understand the clock thing, he started with the back of the head, right? So that's like 6 o'clock; the bottom of the clock. The left ear is like 9 o'clock; to the left. 12 o'clock is the front of the head, and the right ear would be 3 o'clock...unless I'm seriously bad at explaining things... Really like these videos! I'm not a hairstylist but was thinking about going to school to be one for a while until I realized my asthma is so bad, I couldn't handle the chemicals. 😓 Still like testing things out on myself, tho, lol. Anyway, thx for doing this! They're super great!
I remember this haircut being drilled into my head 😂 I have never given so many angled bob haircuts in my life until Rihanna & Victoria Beckham both had them. I knew a girl who couldn’t grasp the dog ear concept & id try to help her but she thought the hair looked fine & id cringe seeing her clients leave. This is still such a fun cut to do
Thank you for this. I have this haircut and have for awhile been frustrated with the thicker patch of hair behind my ears. I can't usually see the difference but can feel it. Now I know it has a name and I can bring up to the woman who cuts my hair to see if she can keep it from happening.
it does work on thin hair ....as a stylist myself I'd cut it so it does and there would still be more to do after the blowout in the form of texturing and making it your own. Or leaving the layer a bit heavier where your hair needs it. I have one side of my hair that has to be cut differently because its thinner on one side ....so we cut it different so it looks the same lol... used to bother me tho cuz the two sides layers weren't exactly the same in length but when i look in the mirror it looks like it is....compared to how it looks when the entire cut is all done exactly the same and following the same guide by the book ...... if that makes sense lol
Please explain hair sections. What are radial and pivotal section, apex, parietal ridge and recession area and what it has to deal with a hair cut? I have completed level two hairdressing but our teacher did not explain any of that. We were not taught technical hair language which I guess is very important. Pls do a tutorial in which you explain about Finger positions like palm to palm, even standing positions like when we should stand on opposite or same side of the hair cut. Hope you got my point. That would be very helpful for most of the hairdressers who are not taught properly..
I went to hair school and loved for a while and I learned a lot. However, I fell into a depression and quit What I did learn was to get rid of bulk is to use thinning shears if needed.
You've got a new subscriber :) I gave up on salon cuts quite some time ago, because none of the stylists could cut a bob correctly. Eventually my thought became "I can screw this up, at least as much as they can." and I started to just do my own haircuts. I saw a few website that explained how to do the bob, and for the most part, they were actually pretty good - except for the occasional dog ear. After seeing your video, I figured out the problem and decided to go to a stylist for a nice fresh line. I explained the trick to the stylist. Needless to say... she didn't like getting tips from someone in her chair. But I told her to do it anyway, it looked great, and I got a free blow-dry for it, lol XD I started using these techniques on my self-cuts, and they work great there, too. And now I have a new trick to practice! No-thumbs cut gave my hair so much texture, and it hid that oopsie cowlick I was growing out ^_^ Thank you!
I would be interested in your opinion, perhaps a tutorial on cutting, paying attention to the shear blades, the bevel edge and the effect on the hair edges as far as hair direction and movement. Thank You, Your tutorials are well done, informative and appreciated!
So I went from Dementia Village to Ireland, to how to avoid dog ear hair. I don’t cut hair nor do I particularly enjoy getting my hair cut. And I watched the whole thing lol Relaxing video. I liked it lol
Wow. This made me excited to cut hair again. I havent done a haircut in a month, I've done maybe one cut a month for the last year, maybe even less than that. Got my cert in 2002, so I kind of burnt out on the old salon grind. I love the actual physical doing hair part, and interacting with the wonderful guests, but I'm glad to be rid of the drama, snarkiness, and full on ninja level bitchery of working in high end salons. Thanks for a rad vid, guy!
I love the way you cutting the hair.also I'm willing to learn more about new cutting of hair style from you Bob. thanks for your effort to show your knowledge in over the world. keep up the good works .proud of you
Used to get my hair cut like this in the late 80's in Australia, not many hairdressers can cut a good bob these days, today Im off to the hairdressers so they can hopefully correct a botched up job I had done 2 weeks ago.
awww that sucks ..its so frustrating to find a stylist that will listen and take the time to consult and make sure you both understand ....so your happy ......did you bring in pictures or maybe Google the actual cut ...or heck. .even show a utube video of how its done to them.....I'd Defiantly take the time if my client asked to show me them things ....just when you book the app maybe ask for an extra 10 min to consult ...then they won't be rushed ...and you will be happy and so will your stylist 😊 we love when we make clients happy.
Candace Kieper maybe you should bring in pictures then. When you say "everybody is cutting it wrong" I'm sure it's due to miscommunication on both ends. When you bring a pic in you can discuss with your stylist what you like and don't like about the picture. Find a pic that also closely resembles your hair texture or at least how you will be styling your hair most days. Us stylists LOVE PICTURES!!
LOL. All the replies say bring in a picture. I've taken the same pictures in to 7 different hairdressers and not a one cut it like I wanted. I finally bought a do-it-yourself hair cutting clip and had a friend use clippers to cut off the bottom. Tah-Dah.
Once I wanted a pixie cut, took in pictures off all different views of the cut, somehow ended up looking like a soccor mum with a long-ish bob cut. Urgh. I cut my own hair how I wanted it a week later
I get what you're saying, but sometimes the dog ear thing is due to subtle wave in people's hair - most people don't have stick-straight hair and when it dries, it will fluff up and out sometimes - my hair has wave and near the face is worse because it's not weighed down and held straight by the surrounding hair.
canahata It's where somebody has an angled bob haircut, like this one, and it's graduated or very layered in the back, but the front is very heavy and almost disconnected. This happens because the front is not as layered as the back (because we don't have as much hair in the front due to our ear line.) The hairdresser already has to leave hair to retain the perimeter to continue the shape of the cut, and the danger of too many layers in the front is that it can make it look very thin and scraggly. So, because there are less layers in the front and more weight at the bottom, it kind of hangs there like 2 dog ears (think of a basset hound). Hope this helps!
My hair is extremely thick and heavy as I am middle eastern, it's curly like around a 3c in curls and I got a bob just recently. I never ever have the person thin out my hair because I've had bobs before without having my hair get too out of hand or dog eared without having to thin out. This last visit to the salon had me looking like someone grabbed my hair and chopped a load off without shaping or anything. Super puffy in the back, dog eared, the whole nine yards. My hairdresser really fucked it up and I told myself I'd give it a few months to grow but the haircut is so shit that a few months later it still has the same problems and hasn't settled. I've been wearing it up this whole time and it's a shame cuz I paid 100 and tipped well. So, if ur gonna cut hair, u better have the patience ugh
Yes!! Thank You! I done this very thing last week dome the back lovely but the sides were flicking out like wings. So this helps alot thank you do you still do the classes on you tube that's I can learn from? I'm newly qualified and haven't even scratched the surface of cutting really. Love all you do.
I've always had that problem where the one side when you cut bringing everything back always gets heavy right behind the ear. It always drives me insane, because it never sits right and tends to (when not styled correctly) flip out on me. Thank you so much for this. ^^
you did mention that if you chose to over direct back, that then there were different techniques to make it work, I would have loved to have seen you do that. To have seen how both sides showcase a variation of the sane cut.
I am supposed to be studying for three tests tomorrow yet I somehow watched this entire video...I don't even think about becoming a hair stylist...
+Rebecca Campa haha awesome!
Rebecca Campa yeahhh.. i have no idea how i got here from crocheting hats to ebay selling to this... etf am i doing with my life. lol
Same. I have a phone interview in a couple of hours and I have no idea why I got here.
Also not trying to become a hair stylist OR have my hair cut like this.
Rebecca Campa LMFAO SAMEEE
Same. I'm studying environmental science and here I am. I can't stop watching though
I don't even cut hair why am I watching this entire video lol
I know. Me too?! This guy is just such a good teacher. Makes it interesting.
Lmao, me either & I despise bobs.
Because it's captivating, lol! I feel like I can cut a bob now! Only the best scissors I have are for fabric and paper, my combs are from the dollar store and I don't even own a blowdryer 🤣
Me as well......and I don’t even have any hair!
BrownCM ikr lol me too.no clue
I know nothing about cutting hair. But found this very relaxing lol.
Soph side me too weird...
but I still don't know what the dog ear effect looks like. it wasn't pointed out.
Jackson jackson you're already supposed to know what it is you're supposed to already be a hair stylist
Captain Fangirl well there needs to be some kind of explanation for those who don't know so they know what they need to k ow before they see their hair dresser
Jackson jackson It's not meant for non-hairdressers. It's not their fault it ended up in everyone's recommendations.
I trained as a hairdresser over 20 years ago, and I wish you had been my mentor/trainer. You explain very well, and your cutting skills are on point. Keep up the good work! 😘 xxx
The reason to spend more on a blow dryer: 'I would recommend an expensive blow dryer, it dries hair similarly as any other blow dryer but I really like this blow dryer'
csenge varkonyi that's not what he said. Or am I misunderstanding you?
He never said he recommends an expensive blow dryer.
He says it at 8:13
He didn't say he recommended it. He said, it's definitely an expensive hair dryer, it dries similar to other dryers but he likes it, and he recommends good scissors over an expensive hair dryer.
Punky Briel No, try turning it off and on again.
I was wondering why this was recommended to me then I realized it's because I watch dog grooming videos and I guess UA-cam thinks this is one lol
Btw I can see the difference between the sides...and I'm a dog groomer. So I guess some people just shouldn't be cutting hair....
+Claire Scott VERY VERY True! Thanks for watching
same here jajajaja
Claire Scott same! well I was watching dog training videos
Claire Scott me too...
this mannequin has nicer hair than me
.... ikr?!! 😕
Michelle Xie could cut your hair short than it will grow back healthy
Mannequins always have nicer hair because it’s sewn in to an exact science. So, if you were to look at the “root” area on the mannequin you would see that the hair comes through in little bundles, several hairs coming out of one hole, like a Barbie doll on a larger scale. And it has to be uniform in thickness and weight throughout the head. Our heads, on the other hand aren’t perfect, because they’re natural. But that’s a good thing. If you had hair like that mannequin people would say, “nice wig”.
Strawberry Vagablonde 🤣🤣🤣right? When you put it that way, we feel much better!
Michelle Xie me too girl
If he would have started barking right then, it would have woke me up.
I don‘t see a difference
@@barbredgreen3403 Look at the perimeter.
I'll leave this comment here just to see if someone answers your question
thank you for clarifying
i have no idea why a stylist wouldn't colour all your head ? it doesn't have anything to do with causing or stopping dog ear effect ??? and I've been a stylist/salon owner for over 25 yrs .... never heard that one before ... maybe i don't understand what you mean ...
Tamara hey Tamara can you recommend a haircut for top volume? every time I blow dry my hair it is flat at the top and big at the bottom. looks so bad.
You might want to do drawings on paper indicating more clearly what you mean, because I'm not gettin' this, and I wonder how many others need more help too.
downbntout I get it perfectly maybe you're a visual learner
If you looked at both sides, the one with a traveling guide was smooth and properly cut the first time. There was an obvious bump and irregularity in the first side he cut.
JazminMarieee downbntout is talking about his explanation of the clock method. Now you're the one that doesn't understand his comment hahaha
Was anyone else hella confused when he started talking about clocks or was it just me lmao 😅
Summer Benefield bahahahaha ✋✋✋
yes! the whole clock thing i get but, he should have given a visual
The face is "12:00 O'Clock", and work your way around. If it is like a clock, then 3 and 9 would be around each of the ears, I s'pose.
Me too very confusing
Summer Benefield I don't know what he's talking about dog ears we all hate .
I get it. For those who dont know. In a graduated bob the line should be a solid diagonal going down towards the front. Not a bob and then suddenly gets long. (Like a flappy dog ear hanging down) this \ not --\/
StarlingofAzerath 3 diff hair people keep giving me dog ears.i dont know what to tell them. Except i cry and i hate it
This video blew my mind! I work in a strictly walk-in salon and we do so many of these cuts. And you just knocked out like 10-15 extra minutes of work, thank you! Definitely clicking "Subscribe"
+Jesse Flowers awesome Jesse!
I've had my hair colored, cut, and permed by students and NEVER left unhappy though
Also, it's -30 sometimes (with windchill).
What are dog ears?
This was so fascinating. I moved tow years ago from my fabulous hair stylist who always always always gave me perfect a-line bobs and lobs. The new hair stylists I've found seems to struggle with my cut. I never knew it was called a "dog ear" but that is absolutely what happens to my hair half the time she's done it. The" good" side you did is what i use to always get, and the "bad" side is what I end up with now. She's young, and has some talent and I love her as a person, but my hair just can't with her anymore. Gotta try to find a new person!
oh come on, give her a chance, "she young" and gonna be much appreciate if u go easy on her, 10.000 hours rule is real
I'm not a hair stylist, but I somehow found this video relaxing and interesting to watch.
I never knew there was a name for this!!! I had a Bob once and whenever I tried styling my hair it never looked right, I always thought it was just the way my hair was but now I know it was the person who cuts my hair!!!
I feel like the saturation thing works better for just straight haired people. When my hair gets wet, it starts to get wavy.
Still have NO idea what a dog ear effect is.
Apparently it's what my hairdressers call the mushroom effect? Thick on the bottom, and normal on top.
xMourningStar I'm a hair stylist-- dog ear effect is when the front is longer and less shapely than the back.
You are very talented......and can cut so quickly and accurately......I love it. Keep the lessons coming. Hugs Anita
I really got an understanding of not moving the guide in this video. What a great explanation of something so untouched for years! Thanks.
I really don't have much interest in this but I must say the quality in this video blew me away, so well made
Wow how did this pop up on my YT feed exactly when this is exactly what I need in order to solve my haircut problem? Will send this to my barber.
I don't know why hair cutting/styling videos are so calming to me but here I am
cool, never watched a hair cutting video before but I reckon this guy is great, pretty sure I can cut this style now lol
BEC MORAN Are you using a lace wig for this. Loved it? Please advise
Rhonda Cook, I think you might have replied to the wrong person..
BEC MORAN
well ...you can cut the basic style ....but there's still work that goes into this if your a good stylist ....like point cutting , slide cutting thinning etc ....that's how me make it our own and so the client has movement and flow when they move their head .....cuz every head of hair is different .... so just doing this basic cut across style would be ok but not great ..... kinda like when ppl cut bangs at home and then wonder why they are heavy and don't sit right or wispy and soft and blended lol
very nice haircut
such a detailed look at the role of overdirection !! great work as usual Matt!!!
I feel like you are the Bob Ross of hair cutting videos. I have no reason to be watching this, but I can't turn away. LOL. You have more energy than Bob, but you make it look like any of us (who aren't even cosmetologists) could cut this style.
You show the EASIEST way I've seen to cut an A Line bob. These cuts have always been difficult for me. Now I get it! Practice is all now.
awesome suggestions for this hair cut. i think this is one of the most difficult haircuts but has the best WOW when its done!
Right side looks too thin! It wouldn't work for a client with thin hair , so I would use that technique on thick hair. Thanks a lot !!
Cecy Flowers looks great on fine straight hair
Cecy Flowers I have fine hair and it works better for me when the weight is taken out - it gives me more body.
it does work on thin hair ....as a stylist myself I'd cut it so it does and there would still be more to do after the blowout in the form of texturing and making it your own.
However, I fell into a depression and quit What I did learn was to get rid of bulk is to use thinning shears if needed.
great cut! you made it simple and easy! thanks for taking the time to show us these things! very, very helpful, keep it coming!
Very good! the hairdresser who cut my hair should watch this! she might learn how to cut hair!!!!
You've got a new subscriber :)
I gave up on salon cuts quite some time ago, because none of the stylists could cut a bob correctly.
But I told her to do it anyway, it looked great, and I got a free blow-dry for it, lol XD
I started using these techniques on my self-cuts, and they work great there, too. And now I have a new trick to practice! No-thumbs cut gave my hair so much texture, and it hid that oopsie cowlick I was growing out ^_^
Thank you!
I would be interested in your opinion, perhaps a tutorial on cutting, paying attention to the shear blades, the bevel edge and the effect on the hair edges as far as hair direction and movement. Thank You, Your tutorials are well done, informative and appreciated!
Wow, are you good! You're the best hairdresser I've seen yet!
That clock analogy had me like 😮🤔😐
I think this guy is brilliant! Love the haircut and his commentary!
Loved this comparison! Now I know why that happens and how to avoid it....thank you so much!
I'm definitely not in the audience these videos are aimed for, but it's pretty cool seeing this stuff up close. Now I gotta watch more of these.
I wish I could find a hairdresser who could cut that accurately! Nice video. :)
That was a super awesome demo. Very clear difference between the two
So I went from Dementia Village to Ireland, to how to avoid dog ear hair. I don’t cut hair nor do I particularly enjoy getting my hair cut. And I watched the whole thing lol
Relaxing video.
I’ve never been so interested in a video in my life😂😂😂
Your attention to detail in your haircuts is rather amazing and in order to thank you I have ordered the try razor
It's a pleasure to watch you work... :-) Thank you!
I’m not a hair dresser but I bought some $50 scissors and used this video to cut my own hair. I got a ton of compliments!
Brilliant as always, best explanation of the two techniques
I just cut this Bob at my local salon! Love to see how you cut it.
How much are those heads? They look expensive, and you have a lot of videos with them.
Around 30-40 bucks.
I got one off amazon for 15$.
have had trouble getting a concave bob with very long cut everyone says they know what I mean and then proceedvto cut it wrong errrr
awww that sucks ..its so frustrating to find a stylist that will listen and take the time to consult and make sure you both understand ....so your happy ......did you bring in pictures or maybe Google the actual cut ...or heck. .even show a utube video of how its done to them.....I'd Defiantly take the time if my client asked to show me them things ....just when you book the app maybe ask for an extra 10 min to consult ...then they won't be rushed ...and you will be happy and so will your stylist 😊 we love when we make clients happy.
Bring photos!! It's hard understanding what you want with words. Photos are great references. The more photos from different angles the better
Im bald and very much NOT a hairstylist - still I enjoyed this. Watching ppl be padsionatet is calming
I get what you're saying, but sometimes the dog ear thing is due to subtle wave in people's hair - most people don't have stick-straight hair and when it dries, it will fluff up and out sometimes - my hair has wave and near the face is worse because it's not weighed down and held straight by the surrounding hair.
I completely understood this explanation, thank you!! I'm currently having issues with a dog-eared haircut which is not what I wanted lol
I am not a stylist nor do I care for the bob cut, but I still clicked on this because your title was quite captivating. Good job picking the title
I enjoyed your teaching style. Looking forward to more videos.
I’ve tried a bob over and over hating it every time and just got to a cut that I liked and now I know why!
I love your video ! Iv been hairdressing for 14 years , I have a Dyson hair dryer and I love it. I would never go back to the old hairdryers ! X
Well done! Loved the technique, and the break down!!! So nice!
Fantastic Tech!!!! Love that addressed the "dog ear" weight on the sides . Cheers from San Diego City.
This helped so much. Thank you!! Love comparison cuts. Do more of these.
I've never watched any hair cutting video, i justed ended up here somehow.. But you explain everything so well its kinda cool
It's ART , Beautiful ❤️
what is dog ear effect lol
Kind of like a bump of hair around the ear, it turns the haircut triangle shaped.
canahata It's where somebody has an angled bob haircut, like this one, and it's graduated or very layered in the back, but the front is very heavy and almost disconnected.
Amanda S omg that finally explained it. Thank you
canahata ive been to 3 diff hairvstyleists they all gave me dog ears wtf?
Amanda S you must go to school for this lol, this was helpful. Thanks
I swear you are the best at breaking down shit
Luv the way your so dedicated to showing people how to cut the right much appreciate you 👍🏻👍🏻☝🏻
haha...i didn't know that awful look had a name....i just called it "flapping in the wind"......love the inverted bob...timeless and classic. tfs xo
Very helpful!! I'll definitely be doing this the next time I have to do this cut.
Love all you do.
great work Matt, always admirers your work
you make it look so easy, great job .
I've always had that problem where the one side when you cut bringing everything back always gets heavy right behind the ear. It always drives me insane, because it never sits right and tends to (when not styled correctly) flip out on me. Thank you so much for this. ^^
Great video! Greater teacher! 😋 I had to read some comments to understand the "clock" application. Great idea.
This was a great comparison and visual! Thank you!
you did mention that if you chose to over direct back, that then there were different techniques to make it work, I would have loved to have seen you do that. To have seen how both sides showcase a variation of the sane cut.
