  • Minecraft 1.17's 'Caves & Cliffs' Update adds the brand new 'Sculk Sensor'; using vibrations to detect movement and sound, this redstone device is very exciting. But if it's designed just right, it could be one of the biggest additions to redstone ever.

    I highly doubt that Mojang will implement a “sound whitelist or blacklist” for these sensors, but the idea is pretty interesting.
    One potential of that idea is that you could use a parrot’s imitation of another mob’s ambient noises to simulate it for the sensor, so it can learn them, without taking the risk of bringing a monster into your base. From there you may be able to develop a system where parrots can detect virtually any hostile mob and from there, create a system that locks them out should they approach your base. Or maybe even set up an alarm so you’re aware that one is inside.

    There are a couple of things I feel are not taken into account in this video:
    - The vibration is not specifically tied to soundevents. The only things that trigger it are large movements or impacts. Not even mob noises activate it, only low frequencies.
    - When they said the Skulk Sensor "lives" underground, they were saying that because it is a plant, or perhaps some sort of fungus. It is not remotely sentient.
    - Why wouldn't wool occlusion work? If you block all sides but one, it will only hear sounds that come straight from that cardinal direction and not from any slanted angle. Seems pretty specific to me.

    • @crazedvidmaker
      @crazedvidmaker 3 роки тому +52

      you are totally right. I commented this elsewhere. Also in the video you can see a little particle effect going from the "loud sound" events to the block, which I felt clearly meant to indicate that this was a new thing, not the sound engine.
      PS sounds aren't blocked by any blocks in minecraft, let alone wool. They didn't overhaul the sound system to include occlusion. They added a new system. It would be INSANE to dramatically slow down the entire sound system to work like an advanced lighting system with occlusion when the game itself doesn't even have such an advanced lighting system for its light.

For already small build it might not do a lot to shrink the amount of redstone behind the walls but if the build is big enough it might be useful to remove then unnecessary lines of detectors or redstone dust or repeators? We'll just have to see what it might bring

      @tigergaj 3 роки тому +2

      @@MidnyteSketch well, I considered that too, but that kinda also ruins the elegance of redstone, likes, certainly it compacts things, but now you have to design a carpet block that can stick to any block and not stick out. The other option is that maybe we make "quiet" redstone components, like a "quiet sticky piston", but even so, that's a bit rediculous to have most redstone components doubled for the sake of one mechanic. Maybe it would be cool if you just couldn't right click on a piston with a carpet or wool and then it turned into the quiet piston and when you break it, you get a piston and the wool back, seperatley. But anything more complicated than that and it undermines that simplicity rule of redstone. But I guess applying a sheet of wool to the block itself or certain sides might be a worthwhile idea.

      @@rompevuevitos222 well, over long distances, yes, but currently, the only reason you'd want wireless redstone is just because you can have stuff go in between it. We can see it travel in the demo, which means that it's already slower than observers, which, (unless this has changed, maybe I haven't been keeping up) is 1-tick speed, literally the same tick that it's activated, and for as far as you want the signal to travel too, because it doesn't require a repeater

    I have an idea, and it sorta functions like the Note Block.
    With the Note Block depending on what block it's sitting on, it will make different sounds.
    With the new Sculk Sensor, you can use wool to block sounds from certain directions.
    My idea is that all blocks (with the exceptions of blocks like redstone related blocks), will all block/filter sounds just like wool does, and each and every block will have a whitelist/blacklist of sounds that can or cannot be transmitted through the material. With all the blocks in the game you could almost easily filter every sound if not all, or each and every block can be a category of sounds.
    Maybe if you surround a Sculk Sensor with Note Blocks, for example, you could only trigger the Sculk Sensor with notes from Note Blocks.
    Wool would be a block that just filters all sound, and each colour of wool could also have different effects, like filtering quiet sounds but allowing louder sounds.
    Also, your Comparator strength idea isn't a mutually exclusive idea and can be combined with yours and my ideas (or anyone's ideas).
    Just imagine this, the Sculk Sensor emits a signal based off of the distance the vibrations traveled to the Sculk Sensor, but if you use a Comparator it changes to emitting a signal strength based off of pitch instead of distance/loudness. Combined with ether taming or filtering with blocks (or both?)
    Tell me your ideas of which blocks would whitelist/blacklist which sounds.

      Idea: new block to go with it, like the Hives and Camp Fires, the "Vybro" (VI-bro) Block. It has a sort of interface with two modes: Allow, and Deny. Give it a Signal to start recording the sounds for the mode. Green Dye is input to enter Allow Mode, and Red Dye for Deny. Shut off the signal to stop recording. This info is stored in the block like a Shulker Box.
      Crafting it: It requires a 3×3. Top Left, Top Right, and Bottom Row is any Stone variant. Top Middle is a Skulk Sensor. Middle Left and Right is a piece of Quartz each, and the Center is a piece of Redstone Dust.
      Placing and Mining: Like most craftables, this can be placed on any surface. To link it to a Skulk Sensor, place the Vybro Block beneath. To mine, you need at least a Stone Pickaxe.

      From a programmer perspective: no.
      Teaching the skulk would mean that minecraft would have to store hard data in a single object. An example of this would be if you tried to store a mob inside a chest. Chest items don't despawn, they get archived as information and trigger a certain pattern. That's why there was a glitch that overflowed chunks, because chest store hard information.
      Apply this to a block that can store hundreds upon hundreds of different variables and it will become basically a buggy mess that would give you more problems that solutions.

For example, when they showed off The Warden, it noticed the sound of the snowball landing, and not the snowball being thrown, which also emits sound. Footsteps would cause subtle vibrations in the floor, which would be detected by the Skulk, but shooting an arrow (assuming the arrow never lands) would not be detected, since it doesn't vibrate the ground, and in turn, the Sensor.

    The nice thing about the sculk sensor is that if it's really the sound engine, mojang already has vars /| lists for sound location origins, so if any show up the sculk sensor just needs to test its radius, and won't be too hard to add.

      Complex interactions don't require sentience either, just emergent behavior. Plants have already been demonstrated using pretty complicated survival techniques like reaching for light, doing anything that carnivorous plants do, reacting to seasonal environmental changes, etc. Reacting to special ways to different kinds of sounds wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary because nature is far weirder.

  • @crazedvidmaker
    @crazedvidmaker 3 роки тому +29

    I think you missed the part where there's a little animation when an event occurs that triggers this new block. A little thing flies from the player to the block. Clearly, then, this doesn't use the minecraft sound engine. Certain events like walking, falling, levers, and pistons, have been explicitly programmed when theyre in the vicinity of this block to generate this animation, and if the particle gets blocked by wool then the event is cancelled.

    • @comet.x
      @comet.x 3 роки тому +5

      That doesn't mean it doesn't use the sound system. It'd be stupid to code an entirely new system to determine sound position when they already have one.
      All that should be is taking the position of the sound from the sound system, spawning a particle, and having the particle travel in a straight line to the block's position.
      It shouldn't be that hard to go from 'make particle effect when a sound happens' to 'make particle effect when this sound happens'

    • @crazedvidmaker
      @crazedvidmaker 3 роки тому +8

      @@comet.x you didn't explain how wool blocks it. It does not block sound in minecraft. So it isn't the sound that triggers the device, its whether or not there is a free path from the triggering event to the block.
      If they happened to decide to put the piece of code that triggers this in the same place as where sounds are made, that would be a pretty disorganized way to code it but that's possible I guess, but in any case, it's clear that "whether or not you can hear a sound" isn't the criteria that triggers this thing, and in that sense, it isnt just using the pre-existing sound engine.
      Moreover certain sounds dont trigger this thing, so it definitely isn't just "if I can hear sound activate," and it isnt coded like "make sound and also trigger nearby things"
      it's coded like "hit the ground -> make a sound and attempt to trigger nearby things"

      @@crazedvidmaker There are quite a few big holes with your posts.
      Easy solutions to how wool can block it: either ray casting to the sculk block from the sound event location with only wool white listed, or a particle spawns every time a sound event goes off in range and the particle despawns when it hits wool to stop it from reaching the sculk.
      You claim putting sculk behavior in the sound system is disorganized, which is true, but then you say that putting it in every single other place in code that generates a sound is a reasonable solution when it is unmaintainable as hell and not scalable. However, you don't actually need to put the code in the sound system to interpret events from the sound system. That is what event systems are for: decoupling code. You just need an event hook in one single location that doesn't necessarily have to be in the sound system itself that listens for a specific kind of event, then filters out irrelevant events with various kinds of heuristics like range/distance.
      Here's some pseudo code to demonstrate just how easy a sound system based solution is vs the solution of writing case by case event processing code everywhere else in the engine:
      function OnSoundEvent(eventData)
      if (!CanAffectSculks(eventData.SoundID))
      return
      for (sculk : GetNearbySculks(eventData.Entity.Position))
      if (sculk.IsInRange(eventData.Entity.Position))
      sculk.FireParticle(eventData)
      end
      All of the things you mentioned are non issues to any moderately experienced game programmer. The kinds of implementations that you suggested would only be implemented by university freshmen.

    • @crazedvidmaker
      @crazedvidmaker 3 роки тому

      @@mettaursp309 You ran into exactly my point. either you program something simple that implements this logic, or you upgrade the entire sound system to work as ray tracing... when the lighting engine in the game isn't run on ray tracing. You suddenly increase the processing power that the game takes by a factor of a few hundred and you have to hire maybe 10 programmers just to implement this. No I don't think that's how it works...
      And no, it's not in every place in the code that makes sound. That's the whole point. I bet you anything these things will only be triggered by specific events - a small list of redstone components, player hitting the ground, and player walking at full speed. Not lava pops, not other mob sounds, not water sounds, etc. etc. etc. I don't think you realize how many sounds there are in minecraft and only about 10-20 of them will actually trigger this thing (and the new mob that also works on this new system)

    Good job SimplySarc about explaining everything. I also want to give an idea. The skulk sensor is basically wireless redstone. It can react to vibrations , including from levers. If you watched minecraft live , you probably have seen the chain reaction how a lever was pushed and a signal was sent to the skulk sensor , sending that signal to another skulk sensor , and forever until it reaches a redstone like block. Flipping the lever a few times or in a pattern for example , dot dot dot doooot dooot dooot dot dot dot can be done and hence create : Wireless Communication!

Well if the redstone strength is based on distance, you can triangulate the exact coordinates of a noise with 3 sculks. If you tune into footsteps, you could track players from underground. You make a normal water pushing spawned farm, and you put a sensor somewhere else, with wool around it, except for the direction that the signal is coming from. Then you connect that signal to repeaters, so that the mobs have time to get to the end of the water stream. You the push pistons behind the zombie, dispense a bucket of lava, and picking it up immediately, and then get the loot though a hopper. There you go, the most overcomplicated mob farm EVER
