I’ve also wanted a ramp truck for a long time and I’ve just never been in the right place at the right time when one comes up for sale and they typically can be very one dimensional like you’ve mentioned previously. Would be cool to see the channel logo painted on the doors and a “not for hire” on both sides just to complete the look. Those Cummins engines sure are a workhorse!
My old 91 had similar issues. The windows were power but would still also fall to the bottom. It also had the overcharging issue and cooking batteries. Mine was a getrag 5 speed and loved to get caught in 5th almost daily. Had to go back and forth from 5th to reverse to get it freed up. PITA. lol
Love my first gen '93 D250 Cummins. Yup, they weren't the best built trucks, but mine is well preserved. Looks better than most 5 year old trucks. Just gotta be careful with em and take good care of em and they're fine. Last of the TRUE old body style trucks. I've had mine for over a year, and have only seen 6 other first gens on the road in that time. It's like an exclusive club, not like your dime a dozen Ford/Chevy/GMC. Just wish there were more sources for quality replacement and restoration parts.
I drive terminal tractors for a living with the same engine as that truck. Unbelievable the amount of neglect and abuse those can take. Everything breaks down on those other than the engine except for maybe a starter motor here and there or something stupid. They all idle and sound way rougher than any Dodge pickup I ever heard with one though. My brother had a 97 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins for a while and that one ran really smooth. Couldn't even feel the vibrations through the floor. When I go home from work I can feel the vibrations in my feet and legs for quite a while. Oh yeah, it's insane what hitting and tapping stuff can fix. I've fixed tons of stuff at work on trailers that way. Definitely should make some sort of support leg for the middle of the ramps, I can see those folding in someday running a car up or down them.
Ford truck wiring from that era was kinda similar, all the cab power and ignition was all ran through one wire through a fusable link, and when it inevitably melted away to green schmoo the truck would die and you had no power to anything other than like the headlights and a few other random things. I had a 90’ f350 with a gas sucking 460 and yep that happened to me a mile before work at 5:30am in the middle of a nasty blizzard.
My 1990 club cab, 5.9L gas also did not have a lock up converter. To be honest, I always heard that they were not a great thing to have except for economy, that they made the transmission more fragile, and I had never had a car with one to that point. The 46RH I am building up for the Challenger is a lock up unit.
Early lockups were always weird. I think in the case of a towing rig like this, lockup is well worth it for the reduced heat generated in the converter, as well as the economy bump. But I’m guessing the technology wasn’t quite there. Of course all Chrysler automatics got them just a couple short years later, and they have been found in all automatics for decades now.
The wobble, at work, can't refer to it as the death wobble to customers occurs in jeep wranglers of all flavors. Recall of the wimpy factory installed steering stabilizer doesn't work well with 35's and up especially once tires feather. Aftermarket as a dual setup for rams. Just a little tidbit. The window regulators are different between the 70's and 80s Dodge trucks. The tracks that attach to the bottom of the glass are different and can cause the window to drop if 70's glass is installed in a 80s door.
Oh dang! I’ve had a bunch of Cummins trucks and I love them all. Some more than others, but yeah. They’re pretty efficient for trucks and they’re truly excellent haulers.

I guarantee this is a wiring problem that I inadvertently created. The wiring coming from the PCM is an absolute nightmare rat’s nest of bare wires and butt splices. It’s so, so bad. I’ll figure it out.

Oh great. Another wannnabe Vice Grip Garage, but with Mopar. Whatever. I don't know if that kind of comment has been made yet, so I thought I'd get it out of the way. Great content as usual Jamie.
There's a TPS on top of the injection pump mounted with the throttle linkage that controls the overdrive . It can be taken apart and clean the contacts and make the OD work again with the throttle . When the TPS started acting up people back in the day did the switch thing on the dash . How I know . I have a 92 club cab dually with a custom paint job with lots of add ons with only 140,000 on it and not a scratch in the bed that was used in a Dodge Dealer TV commercial here in Texas back in 92 . I haven't drove it in about 16 years . Its in storage in my garage sitting on jack stands . I hoped it up back in the day . Don't need no computer to hop up that injection pump but you need bigger injectors . Hell I've forgotten a lot of the little secrets on all that . The brakes on the first gen are so poor basically the front disc are the same as a 1/2 ton and the rear are SO fun to do . My 2001 stop's MUCH better and rear are SO easy to do . Most 350 duallys didn't have overload spring that I've ever seen and back in the day I seen alot of them because all the truck shows I put my truck in . Mine did come with over loads though and it has a herd of leaves in the springs and you know it when you drive it . It rides like a log wagon . If I remember right the cab and chassis has a narrow-er read end than the dually that came with the bed thats why the bags hid your tire .
I know about the TPS. The PCM is totally dead and strangely full of mud in this truck, so I don’t have much hope of getting the factory setup working again any time soon. Also, I’ve owned a bunch of first and second gens. Even my beautiful ‘99 truck still had the earlier brake setup with front disks only, and they sucked. Once they went to four wheel disk, the difference was incredible.
I wasn’t sure if it was a narrower axle or different frame setup causing the issue. I have been unable to find any info on that, or air bags that actually fit. It’s not ideal. Both of these cab and chassis trucks appear to have come with the overloads from the factory. The equipment stickers are long gone unfortunately.
Jamie said something like "Sometimes I think this whole project is a waste of time " Not for me it wasn't, I might've actually learned something, damnit!
That’s great news! I am neck deep (literally?) in the ramp truck project right now, and I’m definitely learning a lot myself. I’m starting to think it might not be a waste of time after all - but we’ll see…
Hey Jamie, great video. A swap with the crew cab would be a good build video. When I use to flip cars I would buy rebuilt batteries and put recap tires on them. Do you have any place that sells rebuilt batteries near you?
If you're going to extend that deck, you really should stretch that frame. Might as well do that and put the 4 door cab on as well. Sounds easy if you say it really fast. Would make a nice rig though.
The reason I have been searching for a cab and chassis this whole time instead of stretching a regular first gen or second gen frame is to save myself all of that work. The length that it is now is perfect for my ideal bed that fits an A body, or *maybe* a B body behind a single cab. It isn’t going to happily haul anything else, and I’m not going to try. Down the line, a longer frame and a four door cab (or even bigger, a la mega cab for a folding back seat) is absolutely in my plan. Whether I extend it myself, or - ideally - source one is for future me to figure out. Either way, Tom definitely won’t be parting out his original 440 crew cab truck for my purposes. Haha.
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it but cab and chassis rear axles are narrower then pickup axles. If you find a pickup rear axle or even better a dana 80 rear dually axle that would maybe give you rhe clearance for the bags. I put an 02 disc brake dana 80 dually axle in my 83 crew cab dually
Yes, someone did mention that actually. It explains the issue I was having with bag fitment. I just have to wonder why they did that. Good plan - I’ll keep my eye out for a later axle.
These two wheel drive trucks don’t use dampers - at least not that I’ve ever seen. I have found the handling to be adequate as it is. I’ll get the idler arm swapped out and the other worn out stuff, and I think it’ll be good to go.
Yup, Dodge wiring what a concept. There wiper motors suck. And another thing, when you rebuild the back of that ramp truck, you're gonna be adding a lot more weight to it. So I hope your suspension upgrades can handle all that plus the load. I don't know much about Air Bags.
I don’t think I’m adding as much weight as one might think. But it will be measurable. Air bags are great. I put a set in my third gen and they are fantastic for moving heavy things - specifically, my bed camper. But having the adjustability for heavy trailer loads is really nice too.

Haaaahaha. Yeah… the universe sees what I’m doing, and it does *not* approve. Unless your PCM dies the big death like this one did, haha. I like to think Tom and I have a good working relationship 😅
Had a tow truck haul in a Dodge Diplomat or something like that at the Chevy dealership with locked up breaks. The calipers had some crappy composite plastic pistons in them. The expanded and locked up. Why they brought it to a Chevy dealership I can’t explain.
The newest vehicle in my “fleet” runs 4 whl drums. They’re exciting. Never sure exactly where I’ll be when it stops. Son’s moved away, wife expired, safety’s a theoretical concern at this point.
I use the Tractor Supply brand because we have one of those here but not HF. They’re essentially the same exact unit with a different brand name. I am giving the rear drop off / ramp section of the bed a total rethink, and am planning other changes. Then plank it, and then a good winch!
Sometimes, as you know, u just have to make the thing that was made to do something do it by trying to do what it was made to do over and over again. We are all old machines that want to do what we were made to do.
I have been known to. Haha. There was a time in my teen years when I bought a Strat, and took up finger style - partially because I’m a big fan of Mark Knopfler and Robby Krieger, but also to save the paint on my new guitar. I’m primarily playing bass now, and decided for the sake of the paint job on my new Rick (and to learn to play bass “correctly”) that I should put the picks down and get better at finger style. So at least I’m consistent - but it’s working out pretty well.
If I get all six tires replaced, the front end gone through, and the entire bed completely rebuilt in the next three weeks, and get a test run in with it, then yes
@@DeadDodgeGarageJaime....a WC class dodge would be a better ramp truck Like a 40s model with a 413 truck motor with a stretch frame like that green one

Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks are selling dirt cheap and you can haul all of your cars at once if you want and you can make money hauling cars for other people plus a semi truck will get better fuel mileage and they have a sleeper. Check out the prices because they are selling cheap.
Americans don't need a CDL for private use unlike Canada. The dot sees that old Dodge driving down the road with a car on the back your going to wish you had a bigger truck. I don't want to deal with scales either. Peace out 👍

Really?? '92 has no lockup? Is that a specifically diesel thing? My little '88 has a lockup but no overdrive. Overdrive requires a lockup converter, otherwise there's slippage while in overdrive causing excessive heat. Or, is that why a lot of those transmissions were burned up by people towing in Overdrive? Aww.... Wendy's..... so jealous.
I can’t remember if it’s a diesel specific thing or if the smaller series transmissions had the same thing. But yes, the first series overdrive has no lockup. And believe me, it makes no sense to me either. The non overdrive behind the 12v had a lockup.

@@DeadDodgeGarage THE dodge wisperer.
Tenacious, I must say....
Laid up after sinus surgery..was hoping for a dead dodge garage video!!
Polypectomies are a beetch. Had two.
😂😂 like is the starter hiting it's self with a hammer
😅
5:30 good idea
Had a tow truck haul in a Dodge Diplomat or something like that at the Chevy dealership with locked up breaks. The calipers had some crappy composite plastic pistons in them. The expanded and locked up. Why they brought it to a Chevy dealership I can’t explain.
Phenolic pistons, I imagine? They are very, very common today.
The newest vehicle in my “fleet” runs 4 whl drums. They’re exciting. Never sure exactly where I’ll be when it stops. Son’s moved away, wife expired, safety’s a theoretical concern at this point.
It’s steering box needs to be adjusted to take the slack out
There isn’t too much slack in it. I checked. And every time I have ever attempted that, it has resulted in gearbox destruction.
Just get a badlands winch from harbor freight. They're cheap and they never die👍 after you replank the deck of course.
I use the Tractor Supply brand because we have one of those here but not HF. They’re essentially the same exact unit with a different brand name. I am giving the rear drop off / ramp section of the bed a total rethink, and am planning other changes. Then plank it, and then a good winch!
You are planning on taking the tramp truck to Tennessee?
A lot of things have to happen in a very short time, but if I can accomplish that, yes.
Sometimes, as you know, u just have to make the thing that was made to do something do it by trying to do what it was made to do over and over again. We are all old machines that want to do what we were made to do.
aside from cars, do u finger pick?
I have been known to. Haha. There was a time in my teen years when I bought a Strat, and took up finger style - partially because I’m a big fan of Mark Knopfler and Robby Krieger, but also to save the paint on my new guitar. I’m primarily playing bass now, and decided for the sake of the paint job on my new Rick (and to learn to play bass “correctly”) that I should put the picks down and get better at finger style. So at least I’m consistent - but it’s working out pretty well.
A Cummins with bad ball joints? Color me surprised 😊
😅
I love my Power-Probe!!!!!
The best tool for this wiring stuff, hands down!
Are you going to try to drive your "ramp" truck to the race with uncle Tony?
If I get all six tires replaced, the front end gone through, and the entire bed completely rebuilt in the next three weeks, and get a test run in with it, then yes
@@DeadDodgeGarage God speed. If not maybe this guy I know who has a car hauler could deliver the car.
@@DeadDodgeGarageJaime....a WC class dodge would be a better ramp truck
Like a 40s model with a 413 truck motor with a stretch frame like that green one
@@clevelandmaker386 better? I disagree. Cooler? Hell yeah… My plan has *always* been a Sweptline cab. That was the go-to Dodge setup in the era l’m trying to recreate with my program. Ideally a 4 door, but I digress… the only power plant option is a diesel. I can’t do 5 miles a gallon with a big block on a 5,000 mile road trip. Just… ouch. The 5.9 Cummins is just about the perfect engine. I do have dreams of Detroit power for a different rig, but that’s a story for another day.
@@JonStein-mu5eb Jon, I definitely appreciate your interest in helping with this. But I hope you can understand that the entire point for me is undertaking and documenting the journey - my truck, my car, my drive. That’s where the fun is for me, and that’s where the videos are. If I needed to ship my car, I could make some calls. But I’m going to get it there myself, one way or another.
Diesel smoke and dangerous curves :-)
Priority number one, upgrade the stereo. The rest is fine.
I completely agree 🤣 ok, but I don’t want my demon to fall through the bed, or fall off. So I will do something there.
Could you take a video of the 1964 Chevrolet Bel Air sitting in your yard?
I’ve been working on that for almost a year… not because it’s difficult, but because of all the other shiny things I keep seeing.
@@DeadDodgeGarage 👍👍👍
Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks are selling dirt cheap and you can haul all of your cars at once if you want and you can make money hauling cars for other people plus a semi truck will get better fuel mileage and they have a sleeper. Check out the prices because they are selling cheap.
I don’t have a CDL, and while I’d like to have one eventually, today is not that day. I’m also thinking I have no interest in weigh stations.
Americans don't need a CDL for private use unlike Canada. The dot sees that old Dodge driving down the road with a car on the back your going to wish you had a bigger truck. I don't want to deal with scales either. Peace out 👍
@@488ciAs long as the GVWR or GCWR is under 26,001 lbs then you don't need a CDL, private or not. Which Pete's/KW's are selling cheap?
@488ci , yea, what Peterbilts and Kenworsts are selling cheap?
Yep, RVs are the only exception, I BELEIVE.
Soooo is this pile hauling dales demon to the slaghammer shootout?
Not as it is it’s not. I’ll be damned if I’m watching the Demon crash through those rotten deck boards - or if I’m throwing those hundred pound ramps around. I’ve got a bed plan cooking. If I execute it in time, awesome. Otherwise, well… my trailer needs tires too. Ugh.
I'd hope not as it is (if it even fits) that demon is my favorite car of the fleet and maybe someday my duster I call the cruster will be that nice :)
I also am a silly man who does silly things.
No speedo: yup, another popped capacitor in the ECU. Someone should invent a plug and play capacitor retrofit kit for these old ECUs.
Just weird that it chose to check out while I was replacing the battery terminal.

You dont need to damn battery. Also fist full of charcoal in my carb reminds me why i need to buy a cummings,,, if they weren't so expensive
Looks like a typical paint job of Chrysler.
It’s a repaint, but it’s still baking off in a factory correct fashion. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I have a 93 D350 in black. I just put on rust protection coating which also turns black.
Batteries don’t last long around here son.
Noted
Yay 🤣
Cutting those ramps in half will make them useless. The angles will be too great and cars would drag.
I’m guessing you missed the first video. Lol. The bed is getting fully rebuilt with a 3’ or 4’ dove tail.
phenolic pistons????????????????????????????????? whyyyyyyy????????????????????

Oh, by the way, do your devoted fans need to start a go fund me page for you… You know… To buy extra car batteries? 😊
Maybe 😅
I`m just a dumbass. Ignore this comment.
