    I think the point of Diane being on the show, in my personal opinion, is to show that the voice of reason needs their own voice of reason.

      The purposes of the characters changed as the show went on. Diane was originally meant to be the voice of reason, as well as Bojack's personal judge of character but once season 2 came around, her purpose changed and she evolved to being flawed like the rest.

    • @yellow_jacket3260
      @yellow_jacket3260 4 роки тому +73

      Shady Doorags I guess so, she does go through a lot of changes, but I think she still is the voice of reason of the show, or at least to BoJack. Even though she has a lot of flaws of her own, she is still the one that BoJack goes to personally for help, like in the aftermath of the Gena incident, BoJack goes right to Diane for help, which resulted in her taking BoJack to rehab. Sure, Diane is definitely flawed, but she still provides the voice of reason to BoJack. Also sure that some of the things that she says are hypocritical too, but as you said, she isn’t a perfect human being, she’s trying her best though.
      But I guess one point remains, Diane doesn’t really stand for the whole show, but for BoJack. One assumption I have for a real voice of reason for the show in its entirety, is Charlotte or Cuddlywhisker’s. I guess Charlotte covers the lens of the outside world, with her saying Hollywoo is a sinkhole. Cuddlywhiskers covers the lens of the inside world as he says that you need to take responsibility for your own happiness. But you are right, in that in this show, nobody really stands for anything narratively speaking, they just exist for the sake of existing, and their lives are the show for the audience.

      Too bad almost everything she says is either totally wrong, or only acknowledges half the issue; which then leads to a conclusion that is not only incomplete, but actively going to make the situation worse if applied as a solution. I'm not sure how much of that is her as a character, and how much of it is just the writers not understanding shit about economics.

    I liked that they decided NOT to have Diane and Bojack become a couple.....if the show is really ending with them as changed people, and there aren't going to be any more dark surprises.....
    If Bojack has really changed for the better, I think its important for him to learn that you can have a strong connection with a member of the opposite sex without things turning sexual.
    Bojack seemed incapable of having a "friendship" with a woman without it leading to sex. This messed him up in his relationships with Princess Caroline, Emily, Wanda, Gina, Sarah Lynne, Charlotte and worst of all, Penny.
    He started to do this with Diane. Kissing her and trying to break up her engagement with Mr. Peanutbutter. But as the show went on he started to learn that he values her more of as a friend and not as a sexual partner. He starts to understand that you can love women in your life without it ever being Romantic or sexual.

    I've always found Diane to be the most relatable character. For years being unhappy gave me a problem to solve. I didn't want a solution because I didnt know how to exist without a problem in front of me. The lows of facing a problem and the highs of solving it become familiar and comfortable. But when you finally stop and realize how good things are and try to be content with your life, you dont know how and you get hit with a lot anxiety and depression.

    • @ravenn2631
      @ravenn2631 4 роки тому +19

      A L I always found Diane’s efforts to fix the world rather naive if you ask me. It’s not that I don’t believe there’s no point in improving the world, it’s just that she often assumes that you can solve large scale problems without first gaining the time, skills, resources, allies and not to mention confidence to do it. I love problem solving as an engineer by the way and WICKED problems (Large societal problems with multiple root causes) are not as simple as many activists assume it might be. The best way to deal with large problems is to first categorize them into small problems and deal with them one by one. For example, working with depression can be split into working on physical health, finding genuine relationships, getting sober, reading more, finding creative expressions, etc. I remember the book Think Like A Freak, from a pair of economists, mentioned that economical issues in society, such as unfair wealth distribution is best done by working with small problems in large efforts, such as planting one tree at a time a million times, can do a lot of good. One example they gave was a charity to pay for eyeglasses for those in poorer neighborhoods, to improve their attention to class in education, and it helped so much. In engineering, people often assume the more complicated equations are the most famous. But take Einstein’s E=Mc^2, energy turns into mass doubled by the speed of light. That’s very short. More often than not, the simpler a solution is, the better it is. Why? Because the point of solving problems is to make it easy to understand than to overcomplicate it. The simpler it is, the more people can join in improving society rather than have to go through learning so many complicated skills to help. If you’re curious in more activist tactics, the website beautifulrising can help.

      This just hit me too hard. I started off feeling the most similar to Bojack, only to end up being a Diane this past year. To me, that's growth. Bojack doesn't even try. To go from Bojack to Diane, is an improvement. But I'm still a Diane. I cannot go any further. I still have episodes and feel like everything is meaningless and boring. And I ask myself: "why? I have everything to be happy about now" and still, I am not. I've figured out my past, and myself, so why am I not happy? And it's true. I've got nothing else to solve. I've got no purpose but to enjoy life. And I lost a bit of myself through recovery, and now I don't know what to do. What do I do?

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags  4 роки тому +587

      The weight gain is not really a sign of being healthy nor positive. It's meant to represent that she has taken the antidepressants. It's the act, the will to do so and the mental results that are seen as positive. The weight gain is a side effect that, in this case, is not as important as Diane getting mentally better. Excessive weight gain, in most cases, is unhealthy but Diane was willing to be less healthy physically to be more healthy mentally.

      Mandy give it up. Diane is not obese by a long shot. Furthermore health is determined by whether a person is satisfied with how they feel, look, and perform AND whether their health markers (as evidenced by medical lab work ups) are within normal limits. The shot we see of Diane reveals NONE of that information. So no one is fooled by your insistence that you’re concerned about anyone’s health. You clearly have some body image issues and projecting them on to a freaking CARTOON isn’t going to fix them.

    Guy's the right guy for Diane. He's good, cool, has interests on the same wavelength, and he won't smother her in affection or attention the way PB did. He's flawed and comes with his own problems and baggage to deal with, which she likes because it makes him grounded and real. Guy doesn't pressure Diane into pretending things are perfect by his existence alone nor guilt her by giving the kind of love she can't "pay back" in her mind. I see myself in Diane, and because of that this season was very therapeutic for me. Seeing Diane grow was something I needed. I’ve been in the mindset that I can’t get better so I wouldn’t go to therapy because I was so afraid it wasn’t going to work. But if I never tried I would never know if it would help me. After watching this season I signed up for a therapy appointment and initially felt that my therapist wasn’t listening to my needs or paying attention to the goals I was actually trying to get out of therapy. But instead of giving up like I had been doing for so long, I made an appointment with a different therapist. And after just one session with her I learned so much about myself and the coping skills I needed for everything I’m going through. And even though I’m not completely better yet, now I finally have hope that I will be.

    Something that I have learned over the years while living with clinical depression and that "nothingness" that seems to be under every rock is that happiness is not a thing you can find. Our culture is obsessed with the idea of "finding" happiness like an object, or like something you get if you do a set number of personal growth tasks like a golden achievement reward. In reality, happiness is more like practicing a martial art or bodybuilding. If you practice daily at happiness JUST for the sake of itself without conditions, you're going to find that just like a bodybuilder at rest is still strong, a happiness-builder will still be happy even when life's lowest and saddest points test them.
    That was CuddlyWhiskers was trying to get at way back in Season 3, Episode 3: BoJack Kills, while they were all sitting around having tea. CW tried being a massive creative talent and felt empty when he got his Oscar. He tried selflessly helping others in need, and while he helped some, he learned exactly the same thing Diane is -- there are always going to be more problems, more people suffering, and you can't fix the world or other people.
    That's when he figured out happiness was something he had to take responsibility for and set about putting the work into practicing the feeling of happiness with no qualifiers...and he finally became happy.
    Diane: You can't just disappear. You really hurt a lot of people.
    CW: Sometimes you need to take responsibility for your own happiness.
    Diane: Don't you think that's a little selfish?
    CW: I don't know what to tell you. I'm happy, for the first time in my life, and I'm not going to feel bad about it. It takes a long time to figure out how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn't have to be that way. Only after you give up everything can you begin to find a way to be happy.
    Notice the whole Buddhist ascetic CW had going in that scene...this is exactly what the Buddha tried to teach.
    It's NOT easy. Every new student of any art or activity is going to fall on their asses over and over and see little reward at first. If you were an abused kid like Diane and BoJack, fighting off the voices in your head telling you how worthless you are and how pointless this is makes it even longer and harder because you can't get out of your own way.
    But it IS doable, and it's like building a muscle. You have to keep practicing. And you're not going to feel much other than sore and uncomfortable at first, but bit by bit, you'll start seeing the change you're looking for and it's absolutely worth it to keep trying. Bojack and Diane both have a lot of shit to go through before they can set that proper framework to even entertain the thought that it's OK for them to pursue their own happiness and they are worth happiness even after all the pain, suffering, and shitty choices they've made...but they ARE getting somewhere.
    And I see this show ending on that note.

    To everyone talking about her weight - she gained weight because of anti depressants. It's better to be ALIVE and fat (even if it's a little unhealthy), than depressed and constantly dissatisfied, and possibly die because of depression. Being chubby doesn't cause all of the physical illness people assume, and honestly in her case could save her life. You're not helping anyone when you say those things about weight, if anything you're killing people. They stop taking antidepressants, they stop eating, they start hating themselves. Now the relationship with Mr Peanutbutter wasn't just a meandering journey where Diane was the one who seemed the most in the wrong, Diane was depressed something Mr Peanutbutter wouldn't want to accept (the situation with his brother) or he would be supportive to an annoying degree. Look at his PSA for depression, it was mostly fear mongering and nonsense. The writing possibilities for that would have made for great storytelling of course, but I'm actually happy that Diane has a chance to get better.

We all could see her behavior and mental state before she was diagnosed, we could see she wasn’t doing well. If you see someone in pain, does it make a difference if a doctor validates it? There's really no way other than with a doctor's assessment or the admission of the depressed person, for an outsider (the viewer) to understand whether or not they are depressed. In Diane's case it makes her break up with the overly optimistic Mr Peanut Butter that much more understandable since he never likely would've gotten her the help that she needed. Which doesn't make him the worse person ever, it just means that for that particular relationship they weren't the best for each other.
      As for Diane's actions, and maybe this is a stretch, but she seemed to be unable to allow her self to find happiness. She was constantly putting her self and her reputation on the line, usually for a good cause, but never for her own personal happiness. She was distraught and that sometimes seemed to manifest that into her lashing out on the seemingly innocent Mr Peanutbutter, which was simply unfair. I think that the diagnosis just brings a kind of understandability to the relationship, now we know why she did what she did, the understanding doesn't make it right but it makes it understandable.
      At least that's my way of looking at it.

    Stefani's analysis of Diane's problems is totally spot on, and I can definitely relate to Diane with her self-doubt and the fact she absolutely does hold everyone including herself to very high and hard to meet standards. When you're going through that depressed mindset, everything you do feels like extra effort and people around you might confuse you for lazy, and if you're a very anxious person like me, you might internalize that. I think Diane really internalized that feeling and bathed in self-loathing, which is why she ended up in those low places. It's good to see her doing better and starting to take chances and accept herself towards the end. It's a long, hard journey, but it's inspirational to see whenever someone gets to that better place and that more content mental state after years of struggling and suffering.

    I think part of Diane's problem is that she was trying to feel good about herself by doing good in the world. She doesn't have much self-esteem because of her up-bringing, so... The problem is that she knows that that's what she's trying to do, which makes her feel like she's doing it for the wrong reasons. And yeah, she can be too hard on people; sometimes she does it in the wrong spirit, and she can be hypocritical. I think one of the reasons she could be so spiteful to Bojack was that he reminded her of herself, so she took his failures personally. I think that's very relatable. I also think that one reason a lot of people don't like her character is that they think she's framed as having the moral high-ground on the show, not understanding that she's written as a very flawed person. Not that that's the case here, but... Anyway, I do think she has a negative outlook on the world, but I don't think that's entirely unfounded. The flaws she found in the "positive" stories really are huge flaws that shouldn't be ignored. Guy is right, too, to enjoy what he enjoys despite those kinds of things -- appreciating the little things won't make things worse. I do have reservations about his character, though. Like when Diane had to go out the window for him? Not that I didn't understand his concerns, but that wasn't cool. It seems strange to me that that was never addressed, so I have a feeling it may come up again.

    I think Diane is a very good representation of moderate depression that often goes unnoticed because people don’t know what they’re looking at. They just see an asshole or someone who appears to be fine but is really just functioning not thriving. We only ever hear about what major depression looks like; they don’t talk about what mild and moderate depression looks like. Diane is showing us what that looks like and how self-fulfilling self-destructive it can be. And also telling us that anti depressants are a good thing and you should take them because they will make you a better, happier person. Bless anti-depressants for existing. I’ve been in Diane’s shoes and let me tell you it massively sucks. And speaking from that experience Diane has had depression the entire series. She just didn’t realize it because depression has a way of convincing you that nothing is wrong (that this is just the way you are and how it’s supposed to be and that you deserve it) when something is very very wrong. That why she and Bojack got along so well.

      Antidepressants take some time to figure out, some are just the wrong ones for you, some have side effects that never go away, some have side effects in the beginning but they do eventually go away, some have side effects that can be altered with other medications. When I first started my medication made me so tired all of the time, all I wanted to do was sleep 24:7, and I had to stay like that for several weeks to see if that would change but it didn't so I talked to my doctor and she gave me something else to take with them to try to combat that without me losing the positive effects and at first there was no change but again after some time passed the groggy tiredness went away. It can be a frustrating process but I personal think if you've tried several non medication methods that haven't helped because your depression and or anxiety is just too intense that antidepressants are worth trying to find the right mix because it really does make it easier to do what you need to do to actually address your past trauma.

So seeing Diane's character growth laid out like this helps me work on myself and my negative tendencies and lack of self love. Something I personally take comfort in is the fact that she put on weight and it was never seen as a negative or a step back on her part. Her getting her life together has nothing to do with her weight. Recently, I've put on a bit of weight myself. I'd beat myself up about it thinking I'm falling back into my old depressed self. But watching this helps me understand that weight isn't everything. And sometimes the mental growth has nothing to do with our weight. Sometimes our weight has nothing to do with our mental growth or how well we're doing. And in a world obsessed with being thin, it's a comforting message.
