I'm sorry but I cannot see how a grill powered by AI would be useful. The grill isn't a robot so it can't flip the food. It can't add spices. You're essentially just relying on an AI to tell you when to flip shit. It's essentially what if the system that managed Ac temperatures was in a grill. It's a little less labour but not much. As for the stroller it's only useful feature is being motorized as it can't self drive with a baby. And I could not tell you how little I would trust an AI to take accurate stool samples.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly, and in the US considering the FTC report that just dropped... We already have mass survelliance of users and non-users alike. Now let's wear those Ray Bans with cameras in them, look in our AI mirror, talk to our AI friend, use our AI phone assistant, and let our toilet make health recs for us. It's like they wanna make humans robots and robots humans. These big corps wanna automate folks out of jobs and then somehow simultaneously still expect us to buy, buy, buy! Upload and The Pod Generation have some pretty satirical uses of AI. The mirror sounded straight outta 1984, that they used to monitor folks in their homes

There's just a lot of bugs out there, and I still don't know all of them off the dome.
I don't think you really need to be into ID to really enjoy observing wildlife of any kind, and these tools have honestly made me, and a lot of people I know learn a lot more about the organisms we're looking at. They're a great educational tool, and they're part of how I learned how to identify certain insects in the field.
Sure, I don't think it's a good idea to trust the ID your binoculars give you offhandedly (inaturalist gives you a list of suggestions you have to choose from because these kinds of algorithms are necessarily imperfect), but I think the argument you and Kurtis are using just kinda feels like "you're having fun wrong if you don't do it the way I do"

It frightens me to think an amateur might rely on a popular AI like Google Lens for their identification, only to be fatally poisoned. There is also a burgeoning problem of people publishing AI generated "identification guides" on amazon. There is already a report of a family who was poisoned using one of those. Many edible mushrooms have poisonous lookalikes, and the difference can sometimes be very subtle. There are enough people who get poisoned without adding AI into the mix.

I'm calling it now: friend is a student film project turned social experiment. The trailer has a consistent film style with an ambient arpeggiated synth that ends with one of the characters gaining some development by hesitating to go back to their friend while they have someone in front of them. I guarantee the funding is going into something like film equipment, student loans, or something else (besides purchasing the domain). The design of the product is way too generic and simple-an unlabeled, unbranded disc with a button that you click that then just posts a basic notification as its response. It's all too... artificial.

Personally, one of the worst and most annoying recent AI “advancements” are AI on telephone lines. If you have a problem with something, like an insurance claim, and can’t make the AI understand the incredibly nuanced and human issue you’re having, you have to try REALLY hard just to talk to a single human. It’s consistently any big company. Not to mention, I feel as though most people need a human anyway, so what’s the point of the AI if no one uses it?

    • @psychotophatcat
      @psychotophatcat Місяць тому +51

It's freaking everywhere. They even have AI taking orders at a fast food place in my city during the late shift because they clearly don't want to pay someone to man the drive-through, and the stupid thing doesn't understand customization requests! At a BURGER CHAIN! I tried so hard to ask to add pickles and it just kept asking me to repeat myself. I know it's not a me problem because my job requires clear enunciation.
Everyone already hates the automatic menus you have to navigate through when you call a company, so I have no idea why anyone thinks using AI, an even more infuriating version of that, is something their customers are going to want. If I'm going through the trouble of making a call, it's because I can't find the answer from all the other options available. At this point, I have just started saying way too many of its recognized keywords or full sentences of complex terms so it gets confused and navigates me to a real person by necessity.

That point about mistakes goes so much deeper.
I have ADHD so I know what it's like to live with extremely low frustration tolerance. It's insanely difficult to learn things unless I am driven by hyperfocus. Whenever I do want to really learn a new skill, I have to either bonk against the wall over and over like a fly trying to exit a window, or I need to sit in absolute agony while I push through. In art school, painting class was so painfully frustrating to me that I broke into tears for the first few lessons, and I had to assure my teacher that I needed to keep going to acclimate to the discomfort.
Most people don't have to deal with that. But this technology is now influencing children very early on to forget how to deal with mistakes and frustration. Which is a VITAL skill. I see it in my little cousins, who get so agitated when they don't get something right the first try and immediately look for something to do it correctly for them. It takes so much effort and encouragement to help them find their patience and joy again. But they crave it so much!
I also feel like all of this makes us adults more impatient, which affects each other and children. I even notice that in myself a little. In the time of finite digital processes, I sometimes find it hard to deal with stuff that is just... open ended. Or blurry. I am encouraged to fill any gap in time with some sort of noise or activity. I am having to actively allocate time for Nothing, or even just for Only One Thing.
There is this book, "Momo and the grey Gentleman" by Michael Ende. I think it was written some time in the 80s, by the same guy who wrote "Neverending Story". I often think about that book and how it describes time being stolen from people. It's so frighteningly close to how reality feels to me lately.
Don't get me wrong btw. I love technology! I am currently writing a story and using ChatGPT for a lot of the concept work and rubber ducking, especially potentially tedious things like naming characters. My graphic tablet made art infinitely more accessible to me. I have a 3d printer and celebrate the positive sharing community behind it.
But that's the point, right? Tech should make things more accessible to humans, not do the humaning for us.

I get frustrated so easily the same way you described. Its horrible bc it makes me feel so childish. Yet, in the moment whatever isn’t working or clicking for me feels like its personally attacking me somehow. I have thrown some horrible insults at games like Celeste and Hollow Knight while playing them, even though i know i enjoy them at the end of the day. Don’t even get me started on learning new practical skills that are difficult.
I so desperately wish my frustration tolerance (as you put it) was better. I want a cool head, part of me is aware that it’s (usually) not a big deal and i’d work better if i didnt let myself get so annoyed.
Makes me feel horrible for those kids. I hate being like this, but i’m at least aware of the flaw and try to override it sometimes, these kids being conditioned into it may not have that insight growing up.

Not just human talent, but human interaction too. For a while now Moonpig has an AI feature where it will write the card for you based off a prompt you feed it.
Like thank you so much loved one, I’m glad you couldn’t spare two minutes to wish me recovery from my heart surgery.
Some companies lean into it with their ads too. iPhone 16 has one for Apple’s AI with Bella Ramsey forgetting someone’s name, using her phone to find out and then lying that she remembered meeting him. Why would the one example you show for how to use it be to fake interactions with people and be less genuine? I find it so weird.

Kurtis on the baby stroller is indeed very dangerous, but I am disabled, and although I don’t have children, I know disabled people with children, both men and women, who would greatly benefit from a product like this. However, about three years ago, I saw a project by a girl with neurological problems and reduced mobility who had a baby, and she had designed an accessory for her own wheelchair to carry her baby. I think that would be a much better option, but unfortunately, that project was never completed due to financial difficulties (I saw this in my country; I’m from Chile). It honestly makes me sad that this risky product has the chance to become a reality, while a real product to help disabled mothers and fathers transport their children doesn’t attract any investor’s attention. 😞😞

    The average ai image consumes
.01-.3 kwh of electricity to produce. A 60 second 30fps video contains 1800 frames, that means on average they consume around 360kwh to produce. The average American household used 30kwh per day. A 60 second ai video could power a home for 12 days.
