the thing about things like the AI grill or stroller or toilet is that they all have a lot of potential benefit for disabled people. but they will never be packaged or marketed as that, because these companies don't actually care about the actual practical applications or disabled people lol
I'm sorry but I cannot see how a grill powered by AI would be useful. The grill isn't a robot so it can't flip the food. It can't add spices. You're essentially just relying on an AI to tell you when to flip shit. It's essentially what if the system that managed Ac temperatures was in a grill. It's a little less labour but not much. As for the stroller it's only useful feature is being motorized as it can't self drive with a baby. And I could not tell you how little I would trust an AI to take accurate stool samples.
Yea, they do the same thing with "as seen on tv" products, a lot of them are beneficial to older and/or disabled people but they never market it as that

I agree with this sentiment. Merlin is very helpful for learning the ropes. Now that I’m figuring stuff out, I try to make my best guess when I see a new bird, THEN look in my guidebook, and THEN use Merlin to either confirm it or get an answer when I’m unsure.
@@bowlcut3140 true merlin is helpful! same with inaturalist identification, like itll make a good guess but its still helpful to have a solid background and you never know when youll see something and not be able to use an app. im not against those tools or anything, but i do see them as tools to help learn since merlin isnt always accurate. love it though, bird calls are hard (and i bet things like merlin are actually more helpful than these binoculars)
My friend introduced me to Merlin when we didn't have her Collins book on hand. It was actually pretty cool identifying birds that way, and I definitely prefer figuring which bird it is out myself lol

As an engineering graduate, all of these are the kind of sh¡t we made up on the spot for those teachers that REALLY insisted we should innovate, but we all knew those ideas and concepts were too stupid to actually invest in.
As an engineering student, agreed. I think that AI shouldn't be utilized unless it has a practical purpose. I can think of like 2 good ideas and none of them are the current focus of AI, instead we want to replace the human experience. AI should be small and locally implemented to handle back-end tasks that require sorting things by probability.
also we have enough engineers to build our own infra, but they will force us to use cloud company services which are first sold super cheaply then access is monopolised and availability & price are totally out of your control. just continuation of the whole cloud boom (that people have been brought into). based on the fact that companies monopolise our human activities (see social media), it doesn't even matter if we stop trusting them, because they will just do what they want anyways. don't want your art to be stolen by genai? well, you can't really have a non-digital portfolio as an artist, sucks to be you ig
It honestly feels like some kind of social experiment to me. I feel insane. Like, this can't be genuine. They are trying to make AI so unbearable that we're ashamed of ourselves for getting to this point.
as someone whose whole family is bird watching enthusiasts , BIRD IDENTIFING IS THE FUN PARTT!! the fun of finding a sparrow and trying to see what kind it is by it’s tail feathers is FUNNNN why would you just want to go around looking at birds without anything else
I mean, I'm an entomologist, and while yeah, identification can be part of the fun, I feel like I'd be high key lost without inaturalist, which functions very similarly (though you can get manual corrections from people within the community). There's just a lot of bugs out there, and I still don't know all of them off the dome. I don't think you really need to be into ID to really enjoy observing wildlife of any kind, and these tools have honestly made me, and a lot of people I know learn a lot more about the organisms we're looking at. They're a great educational tool, and they're part of how I learned how to identify certain insects in the field. Sure, I don't think it's a good idea to trust the ID your binoculars give you offhandedly (inaturalist gives you a list of suggestions you have to choose from because these kinds of algorithms are necessarily imperfect), but I think the argument you and Kurtis are using just kinda feels like "you're having fun wrong if you don't do it the way I do"
i’m not a bird watcher i don’t think- but i personally enjoy watching birds just to watch birds 🧍 i’d like the binoculars if they were like. 80$ or something
The "Friend" advertisement looks so dystopian. The music feels so uncomfortable and "false" in some way. It reminds me of the animated short film "Best Friend" by Gobelins in a weird way.
The thing about AI is that older generation thinks it's young, new, high-tech shit but me and people around my age already started thinking it's cheap, tacky tech used by cheap, tacky companies. When young people see AI images we think of Facebook elderly and shitty companies with no budget now. The only people thinking they look "realistic" are old guys with low digital adaptability tbh
Just as many young people get sucked in and think it's great as old people do. It's not the older generation who are using it, it's the younger generation and a lot of them think what they create is the greatest thing since the "Mona Lisa".
That's all false.. the main people who think it's realistic are young kids.. ages from 13 under.. ive seen it on yt shorts ai generated voices with a.i generated content with a.i editing.. and many kids think it's real.. usually older people aren't commenting on the internet like kids are... ai music will take over everything tho.. finally would make actual artist sound more unique unlike tdu were everyone sounds the same.. especially the female artist

@@theamazingcdnope. You are 1000% wrong. Nobody thought AI could ever make visual art or music indistinguishable from a human because it required creativity. People thought cars could never drive themselves because it was too complex. Both of those happened within just a few years of ai really taking off. The increase in quality of ai is exponential and does not require humans to teach it how to do it. Ai teaches itself on mimicry in ways the creators don’t even understand. If I could bet every single penny I have that AI would be able to mimic human speech well enough to fool more than half of people, I would do it in a heartbeat. Every single penny. I think the AI Stroller makes sense (especially about self-pushing without a baby inside) because when your baby is crying and you have to carry them instead, your hands will be full and having to push a stroller on top of that is difficult. Moreover, very helpful for semi-disabled and disabled people who don't have the best hand functionality.
I actually saw a self-driving wheelchair in the airport the other day. It was guiding itself to the gate to meet an arriving disabled passenger. While the price on these kinds of technology are high now, they are paving the way for a more inclusive future for the disabled.

8:51 This is a huge problem when it comes to foraging. I have an interest in mycology. One of the core tenets of foraging is you need to be 100% sure before you try to eat something. It frightens me to think an amateur might rely on a popular AI like Google Lens for their identification, only to be fatally poisoned. There is also a burgeoning problem of people publishing AI generated "identification guides" on amazon. There is already a report of a family who was poisoned using one of those. Many edible mushrooms have poisonous lookalikes, and the difference can sometimes be very subtle. There are enough people who get poisoned without adding AI into the mix.

I'm calling it now: friend is a student film project turned social experiment. The trailer has a consistent film style with an ambient arpeggiated synth that ends with one of the characters gaining some development by hesitating to go back to their friend while they have someone in front of them. I guarantee the funding is going into something like film equipment, student loans, or something else (besides purchasing the domain). The design of the product is way too generic and simple-an unlabeled, unbranded disc with a button that you click that then just posts a basic notification as its response. It's all too... artificial.
But seriously I think the message of the trailer is that it'll keep you company until you make real friends? But there's the scene of the guy getting trash talked by his actual friends, and also it's a really stupid idea for a product
Personally, one of the worst and most annoying recent AI “advancements” are AI on telephone lines. If you have a problem with something, like an insurance claim, and can’t make the AI understand the incredibly nuanced and human issue you’re having, you have to try REALLY hard just to talk to a single human. It’s consistently any big company. Not to mention, I feel as though most people need a human anyway, so what’s the point of the AI if no one uses it?
It's freaking everywhere. They even have AI taking orders at a fast food place in my city during the late shift because they clearly don't want to pay someone to man the drive-through, and the stupid thing doesn't understand customization requests! At a BURGER CHAIN! I tried so hard to ask to add pickles and it just kept asking me to repeat myself. I know it's not a me problem because my job requires clear enunciation. Everyone already hates the automatic menus you have to navigate through when you call a company, so I have no idea why anyone thinks using AI, an even more infuriating version of that, is something their customers are going to want. If I'm going through the trouble of making a call, it's because I can't find the answer from all the other options available. At this point, I have just started saying way too many of its recognized keywords or full sentences of complex terms so it gets confused and navigates me to a real person by necessity.
At this point anytime I encounter one of those systems I just baffle tf out of it until it decides I’m worthy enough to speak to an actual human. But then the wait ends up being so long because everyone else inevitably needs to talk to a human too and they laid off a third of their customer service employees for a shitty ai program
I can’t imagine a world where I’d want a CAMERA in my BATHROOM MIRROR. Especially so it can just tell me I look depressed and sleep deprived (I can already tell)

As someone with mobility issues, it's actually possible to get a grill that's low enough for wheelchair use and it's much cheaper and maintains the fun!
Your point is so good about cooking with the grill or the passion in bird watching. The same with ai "art," Ai products are taking the fun and purpose from drawing.
this might be very illiterate medieval farm hand of me but companies have got to stop making all appliances smart. I don't want my fridge to talk to me or my grill to be an app-controlled safety hazard. I want my appliances to be durable, to last decades not a mirror that bullies me hHHH
If your fridge lasts decades, you're not going to buy another fridge. If your fridge breaks down after a few years you're going to buy a replacement, and so the cycle continues
istg we’ve been making dystopian pieces of media about how bad it will be if we let robots or ai take over everything for like 100 years at this point, and tech bros really saw that and went “we should do exactly that”
As an artist, as i watch this video, i am honestly amazed by this man's ability to so perfectly articulate what's been on my mind about this topic for years.
One thing I thought about with the stroller is that a lot of these ideas make us ask "who is this for", and like on one level I'm like "a lot of technology for these would be great to make aids and resources for people who have disabilities" but the problem is no companies consider that.
You see because ai could fuck up, and that's to dangerous to use in important things. Which is why these companies only want to let the plebeians use them for eliminating their annoying hobbies distracting them from work
honestly, as a daily stomach ache survivor, a toilet that can analyze your poop for you sounds revolutionary since taking your poop to the doctors as if it's your child is annoying.
26:38 this is actually not true! Babies have surprisingly good language understanding and cries that may sound almost identical mean different things! Babies also shouldn't have parents who spend money on an entirely separate phone to parent for them! The more you know!
cries that are identifiable enough to consistently mean the same thing? If so, do babies from different regions have their own "dialects" of cries? So are different types of cries, behavior that's ingrained in our brains through evolution? It must be, since it couldn't be a _learned_ behavior.
@@akpokemonthe cries aren’t driven by cultural language but rather how the diaphragm reacts to different stimulus. A baby that is hungry may have a “mmmaaahh” sort of sound, because the start of that cry is driven by the placement of their tongue in the “suckling” position. @@akpokemonnope no difference because the stimulus is not external and adaptive it’s internal and unchanging except it might sound slightly different because of , strangely enough, the type of physical climate that the baby is in (hot, dry, wet, cold) and the amount of energy the baby has as well as the previous response of the parents to the babies cries
It’s so ironic they’re selling that toilet for so much. The headline functionality (minus the bowel monitoring) isn’t even unique. My grandma already has a bidet in her house that does ALL of that, and was WAY cheaper. And yes, it is annoying when it opens up the second you walk toward it. It’s not AI, just a sensor.
Dude that mirror better have an EXCELLENT firewall, because I don't want someone hacking it and getting nudes of me crying about how AI stole my job :,)
That was my thing. I'm surprised he didn't mention this at all during the video. AI runs off of servers. EVERYTHING you give it is saved to a database to help it learn. Mirrors with CAMERAS attached to WIFI are horrific, just think of all the little kids (AND ADULTS) who stand naked in front of it and then those images are saved to a DATABASE?! Regardless of how good their firewalls are, those WILL and CAN be hacked. Just look at all the websites you can go to and look at live feeds of the inside of someone's home because their ring camera got hacked. It's terrifying how people are so willing to trust technology without understanding it, and these companies just let them. They're like "🤷♀️, not OUR problem that you don't understand this very new technology well enough to protect yourself."
I was gonna comment that the stroller would be useful for people with movement disabilities BUT IT DOESNT HELP WHEN YOU ACTUALLY NEED IT (I.E MOVING A BABY)

That point about mistakes goes so much deeper. I have ADHD so I know what it's like to live with extremely low frustration tolerance. It's insanely difficult to learn things unless I am driven by hyperfocus. Whenever I do want to really learn a new skill, I have to either bonk against the wall over and over like a fly trying to exit a window, or I need to sit in absolute agony while I push through. In art school, painting class was so painfully frustrating to me that I broke into tears for the first few lessons, and I had to assure my teacher that I needed to keep going to acclimate to the discomfort. Most people don't have to deal with that. But this technology is now influencing children very early on to forget how to deal with mistakes and frustration. Which is a VITAL skill. I see it in my little cousins, who get so agitated when they don't get something right the first try and immediately look for something to do it correctly for them. It takes so much effort and encouragement to help them find their patience and joy again. But they crave it so much! I also feel like all of this makes us adults more impatient, which affects each other and children. I even notice that in myself a little. In the time of finite digital processes, I sometimes find it hard to deal with stuff that is just... open ended. Or blurry. I am encouraged to fill any gap in time with some sort of noise or activity. I am having to actively allocate time for Nothing, or even just for Only One Thing. There is this book, "Momo and the grey Gentleman" by Michael Ende. I think it was written some time in the 80s, by the same guy who wrote "Neverending Story". I often think about that book and how it describes time being stolen from people. It's so frighteningly close to how reality feels to me lately. Don't get me wrong btw. I love technology! I am currently writing a story and using ChatGPT for a lot of the concept work and rubber ducking, especially potentially tedious things like naming characters. My graphic tablet made art infinitely more accessible to me. I have a 3d printer and celebrate the positive sharing community behind it. But that's the point, right? Tech should make things more accessible to humans, not do the humaning for us.
God, thats exactly what i have. I’m diagnosed with ASD, i was originally getting an ADHD diagnosis but was dismissed by the psychiatrist without even being heard out. I’ve been meaning to try somewhere else for an adhd screening cause i’ve had so much trouble at university with concentration and it’s maddening. I get frustrated so easily the same way you described. Its horrible bc it makes me feel so childish. Yet, in the moment whatever isn’t working or clicking for me feels like its personally attacking me somehow. I have thrown some horrible insults at games like Celeste and Hollow Knight while playing them, even though i know i enjoy them at the end of the day. Don’t even get me started on learning new practical skills that are difficult. I so desperately wish my frustration tolerance (as you put it) was better. I want a cool head, part of me is aware that it’s (usually) not a big deal and i’d work better if i didnt let myself get so annoyed. Makes me feel horrible for those kids. I hate being like this, but i’m at least aware of the flaw and try to override it sometimes, these kids being conditioned into it may not have that insight growing up.

Not just human talent, but human interaction too. For a while now Moonpig has an AI feature where it will write the card for you based off a prompt you feed it. Like thank you so much loved one, I’m glad you couldn’t spare two minutes to wish me recovery from my heart surgery. Some companies lean into it with their ads too. iPhone 16 has one for Apple’s AI with Bella Ramsey forgetting someone’s name, using her phone to find out and then lying that she remembered meeting him. The AI baby thing just reminds me of those stories of like rich people who just leave their kids to a nanny and do not interact with them at all. Who then get pissed when their child doesn't like them. But somehow worse because the child isn't even getting another person to get attached to!
Kurtis on the baby stroller is indeed very dangerous, but I am disabled, and although I don’t have children, I know disabled people with children, both men and women, who would greatly benefit from a product like this. However, about three years ago, I saw a project by a girl with neurological problems and reduced mobility who had a baby, and she had designed an accessory for her own wheelchair to carry her baby. I think that would be a much better option, but unfortunately, that project was never completed due to financial difficulties (I saw this in my country; I’m from Chile). It honestly makes me sad that this risky product has the chance to become a reality, while a real product to help disabled mothers and fathers transport their children doesn’t attract any investor’s attention. 😞😞
The average ai image consumes .01-.3 kwh of electricity to produce. A 60 second 30fps video contains 1800 frames, that means on average they consume around 360kwh to produce. The average American household used 30kwh per day. A 60 second ai video could power a home for 12 days.
I'm hoping that the increasingly publicized facts about AI's wasteful energy consumption will help to spell the beginning of its end. There may be a legit role for it in some scientific research, but there's very little need for it in most everyday tasks and typical consumer products.

It's all too... artificial.
Silicon valley moment
But seriously I think the message of the trailer is that it'll keep you company until you make real friends? But there's the scene of the guy getting trash talked by his actual friends, and also it's a really stupid idea for a product
it seemed way too self aware lol
Absolutely
I totally see it
Paying 10k on a toilet would be me in a sims play trough.
They're in the process of limiting this, Biden is trying to pass some laws to limit the use of ai in phone trees.
@@psychotophatcat So confuse it so that you actually get patched through to someone who can actually help? And that works?
At this point anytime I encounter one of those systems I just baffle tf out of it until it decides I’m worthy enough to speak to an actual human. cries that are identifiable enough to consistently mean the same thing?
If so, do babies from different regions have their own "dialects" of cries?
So are different types of cries, behavior that's ingrained in our brains through evolution? It must be, since it couldn't be a _learned_ behavior.
@@akpokemonthe cries aren’t driven by cultural language but rather how the diaphragm reacts to different stimulus. A baby that is hungry may have a “mmmaaahh” sort of sound, because the start of that cry is driven by the placement of their tongue in the “suckling” position.
A cry for poopy diaper or an upset stomach may be driven by a cry that comes from the pelvic floor/bearing down so it’s more like imagine you squeezing out a poop for the first two seconds that grunt followed by a open mouth cry, it’s not a relatively exact thing, and there’s a debate about it’s truth but that is how it is explained /studied
@@akpokemonYes. No. Yes.

That was my thing. I'm surprised he didn't mention this at all during the video.

Regardless of how good their firewalls are, those WILL and CAN be hacked. Just look at all the websites you can go to and look at live feeds of the inside of someone's home because their ring camera got hacked. It's terrifying how people are so willing to trust technology without understanding it, and these companies just let them.

The average ai image consumes
.01-.3 kwh of electricity to produce.
