Love how brent’s solution to “why are kids being so sexual online” is “hey kids! I've been to Slab City. Everyone was super friendly and the residents are mostly societal outcasts, many with mental illness. Law is out there about once per day, usually for drugs. The art there is beautiful and unique and the people are incredibly passionate about their community so it always hurts to see them painted in a negative light.

my close friend and ex-boyfriend, who unfortunately died a couple years back, was in slab city for a couple of days because his abusive partner kicked him out. i was the only person who could let him stay for an extended period, so he had to drive a uhaul from texas to northern california while going through heroin withdrawal. slab city was about halfway on his route so he stopped there to sleep and eat and all those things you need to do to live. that is the type of story that is common among slab city residents, and to treat those people as evil npcs for a shitty youtube video is repulsive in a way i cant describe. its absurd how little empathy people have for those on the margins of society

I’m from Hawaii and that breakfast is literally a classic Hawaiian breakfast, Sausage links, Portuguese sausage, eggs and spam which is eaten by all locals in Hawaii. That prepackaged breakfast was probably $8 and a completely normal (and popular) thing to eat in Hawaii. So not only are Brent and crew assholes for literally throwing away food that was not theirs, they disrespected the place they were visiting by calling local food “Disgusting”. It’s okay I’m sure that Brent has never heard of spam as i’ve never seen it served on a silver spoon.

As someone who struggles with having to specifically budget how much money I can spend on food per week, throwing out a whole nutritious and delicious meal is literally disgusting. 8$ is a lot of money, especially for food, so disrespecting another human beings property AND culture is just a huge slap in the face. At least on the airline I’m used to flying, the seats have gotten smaller and more cramped together, and like, heaven forbid your taller than like 5’. Like it’s manageable sure, but let’s not forget that airlines are encouraged to make coach class seats as small and as cheaply as possible. It also doesn’t help that I myself, have mild claustrophobia, but still.

What he threw away is a common breakfast/snack thing that you can buy in stores (it’s spam, eggs, sausage, and sometimes rice)
Hawaii is surprisingly expensive so that house is actually pretty well sized (also that means that the food is more expensive so that food was probably around 10-14$ and they don’t put a lot in there)

I went to Slab City in 2017 and it was actually a beautiful example of how community members take care of eachother through collaborative efforts despite the area being extremely poor. It's treated as a tourist attraction during the winter time because in the summer it gets so hot that most of the people there move elsewhere, but those who stick around year-round are very nice and helpful. The only instance I've ever heard of Slab City being dangerous is the occasional harassment of obnoxious tourists, drug overdoses, or heat exhaustion.

A lot of them had a similar story: A suprising number of people end up living there because they were driving through the desert and their car broke down but they couldn't afford to fix it. @@cupriferouscatalyst3708 I live in Hawaiʻi & things are so bad here. I have mental breakdowns almost daily for how hard it is to just afford necessities & I’m technically middle class based on US standards. Native Hawaiians make up 10% of our population but over half of the homeless population. In our culture the land here means everything to us. It’s where we come from; it’s where our ancestors are. We fight so hard to stay here & some of us fight until it gets to a point you can no longer leave to live somewhere affordable. I really appreciated Kurtis’s response to them coming here & how they treated the people Brent’s sister was staying with. Also, there’s literally no way she spent $50 to stay there. She most likely spent at least $100-150 per night. Hostels cost $70 a night & Air Bnbs have so many restrictions due to laws in place to prevent rent increases, so they’re really expensive.

i go to slab city all the time and no one has ever said it’s dangerous 😭 literally u just go and enjoy the art… most of the locals set up art exhibits at their camp and they just want to show it off to visitors. A lot of them actually love sitting with people and just telling stories about their lives. Once a month, they host a little potluck in the community with chili and an open mic show. Yes, there are a few people that want to be left alone and they just leave signs to stay off their property or they’ll have a line of empty bottles/tires serving as a sort of fence. No one’s gonna hurt you unless you literally break into their house. Slab city is quite literally all people that wanted to escape the hustle culture and just sit in the desert and create sculptures. It’s wholesome asf if you’re open minded about the culture. If i have friends come to CA from out of state, I always try to stop by slab city with them.
As for the no laws situation, cops don’t go out there. Mostly because the closest station is about 1.5-2 hours away. I can almost guarantee that police officer interaction was staged somewhere closer to civilization because he wouldn’t be sent out there unless something big happened. He definitely wouldn’t have time to sit and chit chat with brent rivera 😭

@Courage Karnga Cali. Out around Death Valley. The nearest town is a rinky dink place called Niland.
It's called that because it's built on the slabs of an old military training camp.
The most dangerous part of the place is the heat in the summertime, but in the winter, it turns into a sort of festival. It's a unique winter birding location, but few people stay all year. So if you go, make sure it's not during the hot months.

If someone asked if I wanted to do something in St. Louis, I'd say sign me up. Danger can find you wherever you go. They asked us for help, and while I'm not opposed to giving a dollar here and there to someone in need, these two people came up out of the darkness and were just generally creepy people. After we said we couldn't help them, they followed us for a couple blocks. Thankfully, nothing bad happened, but crime in general has gone up statistically in my city, and I want to stress that my friend and I both were close to running, but they were still keeping pace or could have easily decided to stop following us at any point. I do not typically feel unsafe, but it does happen. Scary stuff can happen anywhere, at any time, and while we should be cautious of our surroundings, we should not let it stop us from going somewhere or doing something. As a person who has walked down a street in STL Missouri, I can confirm that everyone walks around telling each other how dangerous it is.
Edit: Dang how did this get 2.5k likes, don't y'all know how dangerous it is to like comments 💀

I live in Missouri and have only been to St. Louis like once (I live about 2-ish hours away) for a con and honestly it was wack and I hated it 💀

@@leelubell9080 I was making a UA-cam video about how dangerous St. Louis, Missouri is and then I took an arrow in the knee. No, seriously take me to the hospital! I can't afford an ambulance! 😭😭😭😭😭

As a recovering addict it makes me feel really seen, respected, and loved hearing Kurtis talk about harm reduction and how the government neglected the area when they could’ve had things like safe injection sites and community outreach. I’m sure the community would have loved the opportunity to be apart of that but no effort was made for the bare minimum of keeping these people alive. I don’t ever hear many UA-camrs speak on addiction and especially needle exchange’s because of how controversial that is already, but it really does save lives and lower overdose deaths as well as disease and hiv rates. Thank you for never being ashamed of what you stand for
