Aaron is such a good man & husband. Being able to trust his judgement is monumental, Laura. He was looking out for his wife. So beautiful to see good people finding each other.
They have a love and bond that is very rare I see them hold hands walking through a garden at 80 years old
About the birch. I wonder if it was because we had a couple of “false springs” where the weather warmed up, then we got slammed with cold temperatures. That happened more than once this year. Tree started to bud out and got nipped, affecting the top more because budding at the top started slightly before the bottom? We may never know. Reminds me of that Japanese maple you had in the pot next to the house. 🤞 hopefully it’s nothing more than that. 💚💚💚
I thought the same thing. It's common to see this type of thing in my Ohio zone 6 where we get a lot of spring moisture and then temperature fluctuations. I'm no expert but maybe the unusual amounts of moisture Laura got this spring is making the tree react to spring temp fluctuations differently.
@@amandastout9022 That has happened to our Japanese maples in our zone 6 in Missouri as well.
I was thinking the same and especially those brunches were higher than the rest and the freeze affected those buds for sure. It might not get new buds this year and exposed without leaves during the summer might finish the tips off....Will see, I guess!
makes sense!
I agree with the cold snap being the cause. We have a young Japanese Lilac tree we planted last summer that we still have covered because of the weird spring we've had in WY zone 5. Hopefully we can uncover it this week.
Everyone needs a Paul in their life! The dahlia beds look great.
@Shelly D, I completely agree! He is a hard worker and a loyal employee to them!🤗🤩
400 dahlias. WOWZA. Gonna be quite a spectecular show of colours again this summer. Can't wait to see it.
Eeek! That means Jenny is getting hers soon. So excited!
Whew! 400 holes! So interesting how you take such care to plant these. Always love when you 2 show pictures of the plants you are working with. Thank you! 👍😊
LAURA, YOUR LITTLE HELPER IS THE SWEETEST!👦
🌻🌞🌻
It's such a wonderful day when the dahlias go in the ground! I also have the Cafe con Leche mix from Eden Bros. Eden Bros has a breakdown of each variety featured in the mix. I love having this information and I hope it is helpful for you!
Dahlia Cafe au Lait
Dahlia Sweet Nathalie
Dahlia Kona
Dahlia Ryecroft Brenda
Dahlia Peace Pact
I live about 200 miles from you and have the same climate. My birch tree doesn’t have the dead looking top like yours, but a lot of seed pods are black. They look like a frost got them to me. Weird spring for a lot of plants! I’m hopeful both our trees will be fine! I love your videos as always!😊
I would call a tree expert it's such a beauty.
More often than not, it's something that went wrong or is going wrong down below. I think you nailed it Laura...also perhaps try aerating the soil around the tree, the soil could be compacted. Aaron, the ever cautious one made the right decision regarding the cart. I had a bad feeling about it too. Always be safe! Thanks for sharing ON A SUNDAY and have a great week!
"So maybe we just pull all this CRAP away from the trunk" made my morning LOL praying for your tree! Thanks for taking us along for the troubleshooting.
Oh hope your birch recovers..I just lost a sugar maple from root rot..😥 It had all of its leaves dry out late summer, like it was early fall..not just one area like yours. Hopefully it got nipped by frost & if sun hit that spot first maybe that hurt it. Anxious to see your adventure with leaving dahlias in ground this winter!
Yes, here in Newberg Oregon we leave the dahlias in the ground, no mulch and no tarps. They get a BOATLOAD of rain. They are coming up nicely now!
Hi Laura and Aaron! It will be quite a show when the dahlias bloom. Paul did a great job making the area look nice. I hope you figure out what is wrong with the birch and that it will be ok. Good call on the lift Aaron! Thank you so much for sharing!
Laura
I have heard very solid advice about trees from Howard Garrett. He has a great website and local (Dallas) radio program.
He talks constantly about the flare of the tree must be exposed to air. No soil or mulch covering it. He also mentioned that most canned and burlap trees are buried too deep and we should not plant at that depth.
He also goes by dirt Dr.
I remember you saying before that the area around the chicken coop was very hard pan/compacted. Perhaps it’s roots have reached the edge of where you made the flower bed and are running into that hard soil.
I cannot wait for you to figure out your birch tree issue. Ours had to be taken out last year for I suspect the same issue. Every year it died a little more from the top down. So sad.☹ However, on the positive side, I now have room to build my greenhouse.
@Rochelle Duff, taking the loss of your birch tree and turning it into a positive!!! Enjoy your new greenhouse, once it is built!!!
@@kimberleyfrasquillo3684 Thanks! I cannot wait for it to be in use. My 12yr old is so tired of bringing plants out and in every spring (zone 3B) for her/my spring seedling sale. Next year will be epic.
Your excitement when placing or receiving bulb orders are contagious Laura. Knowing how well or not a variety does is helpful. I'm sure you sell out varieties of bulbs, plants and seeds because you want them/like them. PLEASE label, so helpful for next year too, since you plan on leaving in the ground 👌🏻🌱Thanks
shout out to lauras incrediably steady hand, walking and filming while keeping the camera that steady is impressive
Dahlias are some of our favorites! The just flower so powerfully all summer long 🙂
@Garden Answer
👋🌞Good morning, Laura and Benjamin! 400 holes for Dahlias? WOWZERS!! Who augered all of the holes, you Laura or Paul?
How fun to have your parents over for a picnic on the lawn🥰🥰 Awwwwwe, how sweet that little young Man is, making you an arrangement of tulips... He is ALWAYS thinking of his Mama. Please show us the arrangement he made you. I want to see how much he has learned from watching you making arrangements. I bet a lot! At least 4 Aaron's. 😂🤣😂🤣
So, if people don't water the dahlia tubers in, what triggers them to start growing?🤔🤔
Well, morning turned into afternoon and I wasn't able to finish watching this video. I will pick back up, where I left off, tomorrow.
Have a Blessed evening everyone!
Kimberley F in AZ (Zone 9b) 🌞🌵💞
Good morning Love your channel!! In my experience bring the soil down to the basal flare and water throughout the summer. If the tree is lacking water or nutrients the upper canopy is the first to go much like how frostbite works ( how my husband describes it to our clients, we own a tree are company). If the soil is too compact or high the roots will begin to grow upward to find water and can girdle the trunk in the process. Just some info I’ve picked up along my career. Good luck, and thank you so much for your continued educational videos!
Regarding the birch, I had a similar occurrence with a Japanese Maple. Arborist came and diagnosed a fungus in the soil. It has been getting deep root treatments for about 2 years since the diagnosis.. The top branches did not recover but at least no more die off has occurred. Not sure if that might be your issue with the birch but it sure looks similar. Love your channel and learn tons. Thank you!
Love to see experienced gardeners run out of time with projects ;) I constantly think this gardening task will only take 5 minutes but ....2 hrs later. Appreciate the "real" gardening life. Thank you!
@L G, funny how that happens, huh? 🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ Same here. Think I'll quickly replace an irrigation cap and like you said, 2 hours later. Spot on!
wow 78 varieties of Dahlias!!!! Laura you're a Garden God.. i was happy to get 6 on hand.. dang!!!
So much respect for Aaron's opinion on the safety cage. I was getting nervous about the height and I am the one that sent it to you all. We just use ours to get to the roof of the house and too prune some branches with a pole saw. Your videos are wonderful and give comfort since I have not walked into my garden this year. BTW are there any clones of Paul out there that I could hire ?
@Bev Miller, that was very kind and generous of your family to gift that cage to Laura and Aaron!🤗🤩👏👏
I see that in trees all the time around here (Reno). Looks like you had a frost/freeze that took out the tender buds. If they don’t bounce back next year, cut them back. It’ll look bizarre for a year, but it could come back. It’s very likely a result of all the false springs we get. Nice job on the dahlias, such beautiful flowers! Can’t wait to see the shed! Things are really coming along 😊.
We had something similar happen to our river birch when it was about the same size as yours. In our case it was because the previous owners had planted grass right up to the base of it. Once we pulled the grass back about two feet from the base it then finished leafing out. 🤷 the tree is about 25 feet tall now so fingers-crossed it’s a similar situation with yours!
Had same problem as one of your other subscribers, Laura Coughlan. Arborist said it was called die-back, and recommended deep-root feeding in Spring. Red maple bounced right back. Aiy-yi-yi, that's a whole lot of dahlias. Mamma mia! 💜💜
Oh my goodness!! A Saturday and a Sunday video?! I am so thankful! I love waking up to your wonderful channel, and have learned so much from the information and examples you share. I'm a better gardner, because of you. Thank you, thank you. ❤
Yah! Another video.i love when i wake up and can have my morning coffee with laura and family 🥰
Thank you Laura and Aaron for the Sunday video! Cudos to you Laura for filming while Aaron was raising the basket....you are FOCUSED. Love it. BTW-all of my gardening friends are on the morning obsession of coffee and Garden Answer! 🥰💚🌺
Hi Laura. I love your show, been watching for awhile. Thank you for sharing so much helpful gardening content. And dahlias are my favorite flower, so I love watching you plant and harvest them. SO beautiful. About the birch problem, I worked at a gardening center for several years, but not a "professional" tree expert by any means, so I went and did some research online. Most of the research said that if the bronze birch borer has infested the tree, the top canopy will start dying back, and often it will show up after the first two years after being planted, like possibly in your case? One university research site said that these borers attack stressed trees, like from exposed roots, hard soil that's compacted, where construction has taken place, or from drought. And it did look like you may have birch borers from the video you showed. I saw a couple of black "d"s on the trunk. The "d"s are their exit holes and only about 1/5 of an inch in size. There won't always be frass, often just a clean dark "d". I saw one photo online of a borer exiting the tree, clean as a whistle? YUK! ha Anyways, I know you know gardening WAY better than me, but thought I'd share. God bless you both.
We all need a Paul, don’t we fellow gardeners.
@Lynn Schantz, yes, we all do need a Paul to help with yard/garden work.🤗
Y’all are just full of surprises this year and I’m loving it! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the patterns and consistency too, but it’s a fun surprise to have a different type of video than we expect. Plus y’all have posted a bunch of videos on Saturdays and the “Aaron jobs” videos too….it’s awesome and much appreciated! 👏🏼😊
You said it! Always something new, fun and informative!
I really appreciate that there are no annoying, repetitive filler words. Just great information and delivery!
I am absolutely astonished at your energy and strength. You must have an amazingly strong back.
I went to Walmart today and was shocked to see they sell Dahlia tubers in the garden center
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺, we are just starting to dig UP our Dahlias. Missing the blooms already 🌸🌺🏵💮🌼
So glad you show the problems as well as the successes. It’s helpful to realize that things happen to every living thing on this earth from time to time, we just have to try and cure it if we can!🌿
Right! This spring I’ve had more insect pressure than years past. I always battle fungal issue being in the hot, humid south but this year it’s ramping up already. It can be so discouraging! So when I see someone as accomplished as Laura having issues, it makes me feel a little better to know I’m not the only one.
Everyone needs a Paul !
We have to rain here in Mo last night and our garden is starting pop with green. Now I have had my morning coffee and my Laura 🌹
I'm glad you were able to color block. I imagine that will make flower arrangements easier.
The dahlias are not color blocked. 😉
@@lisaburnette6850 actually she said she did after getting all of them out to separate into varieties
@@lisaburnette6850....but they are 😉

I'm hoping you include your system for staking dahlias in flower beds in a future video! I'm growing dahlias for the first time this year and putting them in among my flower beds. I know you have to be careful not to pierce the tubers. ☺️
I just planted my very first dahlia tuber called cactus purple 💜
Love all of your content. You are workhorse. I’m am amazed at all you and Aaron do. I love the 15 to 20 minute content. I prefer for it to be quick because you motivate me so much. I start feeling like I need to be outside right about when you are done( or quicker) but I don’t want to miss anything. Thanks for all of your guidance and encouragement. You and Aaron really are my garden pals.
Good morning, Laura, from Windermere Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
Today I received 2 Chicago Hardy Figs from Baker's Creek Heirloom Seeds and Plants. Certainly nothing in comparison to your world, but exciting to me 💓
Happy Gardening Everyone 👩🌾👍
Have a Blessed day to Y'All 💕
@Peggy Helbling's Garden What You've Got, congratulations on your 2 Chicago hardy fig trees!👏👏👏 Have fun taking care of them and enjoying the fruit! YUMMM
@@kimberleyfrasquillo3684 Thanks Kimberley, I did upload a video on my planting. It's been a few days and they have perked up. Baker's Creek is a really reputable company. 👩🌾👍
got my order from swan island dahlias. they give great instructions. they require a low nitrogen fertilizer, but like high potassium and phosphorus. so like a 5-10-10. wondering if your stuff has that. I know your dahlia's look great, so whatever your land and sea has, it must be working. They also recommend using bone meal and slug and snail baiting at planting. lots of water during the summer, not by hand, but sprinkler. and then spraying for spiker mites and mildew, and pinching! sounds like a lot of work, but worth it! looking forward to my "Year of the Dahlia" as I'm calling it. Can't wait to see yours and all the transformations coming.
☕️Good morning Laura and all GA friends. A rainy morning here in southeast Michigan, but my day off so this dahlia video is a great start to my day. You are amazing at the organization of the many colors and varieties. I just love Benjamin’s little bouquet! Enjoy a wonderful day everyone! Thank you, Laura🌸🌼🌷💚
You have a wonderful day too and thank you 🥰
His little bouquet was the cutest, sweetest thing!!! 💗
Good morning Michigan!
Hello all you fellow gardeners from southwestern Pennsylvania! I often think wouldn't it be nice if we could all get together ? I think most gardeners are sweet people ! Hope you have a good day !!
You could always get an opinion about the birch from your local extension office. They may she's some light on what is happening.
Dahlias! Say no more. Such gorgeous flowers. I love them 😍. I hope your birch continues to grow and doesn’t have any issues. The bark on birch trees is so pretty and interesting.
Laura you got a strong back to do all that planting !
I love at the beginning of your video’s you say “Hi guys how’s it going”. For some reason your perky demeanor makes me happy 😊
Good morning! Cannot wait to see all those dahlias bloom, one of my favorite flowers.
Good morning, Laura ☕️. I’m with you; leave the Dahlias in the ground this year. Digging & storing is a TON of work!
Last year we had the 17 year cicadas. That’s what a lot of the damaged trees looked like. Our new dogwood had places that looked like a mini tiller went past. The first guy from UT thought the tree was gonna have to come down and be burned and we had a whole new species of something. Finally the specialist came out and Recognized immediately that it was cicada damage. All the places have healed themselves and the tree looks wonderful. Just a thought :-)
Swan Island has beautiful dahlias! When they have their Dahlia Festival the arrangements they display are glorious! ☮️
Hope the tree recovers. The Dahlias are going to be beautiful
Everyone needs a Paul! Indispensable ☺️
I've thought long and hard about what I need in my garden and yard to really make the biggest difference and I think I need a "Paul". :-)
Birch Trees, more than any other tree I have noticed, are sensitive to messing with the forest and/or plants around them. They work with the established fungal/root network to supplement their needs. Potentially, water that area more broadly and add some mulch for a year to help the fungi network grow and help him establish new networks. He and your new maple are going to be buds 😅!!#SecretLifeOfTrees
Thanks for the information on the birch! I live in Canada and I can't treat mine so I'm so nervous for borer beetles. Birches are my favorite 💕
Can’t wait to see all those Dahlias! Good job Laura! Hope the Birch tree is ok. Enjoy the nice weather too.
We had a really cold spring this year in BC Canada and this happened to so many of our fruit trees and blueberry bushes. It's from the cold spring, so many people in my area have had the same thing happen. Don't worry :)
My maple leafs out that way every year. The top is more exposed to the cold and wind. So it always fully leafs out on the bottom and middle before the top catches up.
Good luck with your birch, its such a beautiful tree. We lost one awhile back. One big limb at a time. We never did figure out what went wrong. But yours sort of looks like it got nipped at the top with a cold layer of air.
‘Expose that root flair’ I can hear Kaleb at Wyse Guide say it as you scrape mulch and soil away. Good luck. I think the tree will be okay.
@Jenny Boivin, I could hear Kaleb’s voice in my head as Laura dug away the mulch 😂.
This is happening to so many of the birches in my area! Southern California zone 9b. Just the tops of birch trees dying off with no rhyme or reason. My best guess is heat/drought for ours but really I don’t know.
My tree in our back yard did the same thing. I think one freezing night here in south Texas it just froze the upper tip level. We cut it out this spring and the tree appears happy.
We had a weird late frost last year that did the same thing to our Japanese Maple. It stopped our sweetgum trees from producing the sweetgum balls (which was kind of nice).
I'm so excited to watch your dahlia's grow also your dahlia's in creekside nursery. Can't wait to see both of you with the beautiful flowers!
That's my girl...she color blocked!! This will be a spectacular display in a few months...I can't wait!🥰❤
the Birch....verticillium wilt?
I wish our weather would behave. Still cool at night in the 40's. Thank you for your motivation. It helps me look at our flower gardens in different ways. Always evolving and changing. Love it!
We had a few trees do that exact thing after the Texas freeze in 2021. Specifically, our crape myrtles stayed that way throughout the last year, but they all leafed out and bloomed beautifully this spring.
Austin resident here---it was interesting how the fruit trees, flowers, pretty much everything came back fiercely after the big freeze. And then this year....boiling heat already and half the normal rain, oy, such is the life of a central Texas gardener. 😊💚🍑
After leaving work at 8 months pregnant, I was living alone and started out growing Dahlias to give me something to occupy my mind, leading me to my love for gardening 🌱 Arabian Night is a gorgeous two toned variety with very deep, wine color petals and an almost iridescent/hallographic quality to them. Roughly 6" blooms and a lot of them! I planted 2 tubers bought from amazon as a beginner not knowing they multiply. Now I have about 6-8 dahlia plants for this year! Have you heard of them or grown them before? I love them and I think you may too! 😄
Excited to see your dahlias! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
On a side note: coming from someone who drives big John Deere tractors here on our farm I was yelling to the screen “No! Don’t do that!” 😅😅😅
Good call Aaron to bring Laura back down 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 you guys are the best!
@Gardening On Taylor Mountain, yes, it was a bit nerve wracking seeing Laura being raised up. Especially, since she wasn't harnessed or tethered in...😱😱
@@kimberleyfrasquillo3684 I’m glad they are smart folks and decided against that! We don’t want anything to happen to our Laura! 💚
@@GardeningOnTaylorMountain, you are 100% correct. No mishaps for Laura.
A ton of dahlias, it's going to be gorgeous! I can't believe how good it looks with the woodchips between each row. If you do that every year, it will improve your soil tremendously! Hugs🤗❤🤗
I can’t wait to see all that color !!🌸🪴🌺🪴🌻
I’m very very curious about this as well. I live in Alaska and my back yard is a birch forest. All natural, and all of the birch in my area have dead tops but the rest of the trees look healthy as well. Some say it’s the wind but it’s so hard to say
This is at treat to see your video on a Sunday.
I’m glad dahlia tubers found homes across the states. Both of you are so generous. What great examples of kindness you and your whole family are. Planting at the college, children’s relief nursery, church, community, giving away veggies, bouquets of flowers. The list goes on. 💕☀️💗🦋🌈🌷🌸🌼
What was it that you had to clear away from the bottom of the birch? I just thought it was mulch. You, GA, your family are a blessing!
I think everyone needs a Paul in their life. Our weather is finally starting to get warmer and I spend yesterday cleaning out flower beds and man-o-man my back and legs are sore today. I wish I had a Paul to help with yardwork.
Laura is the "Tree Whisperer". I had a Japanese Goodblood Maple die at the top. I cut that off and now it is beautiful.
Its nice seeing Laura in a T-Shirt! Crazy how different parts of our country have such different weather! I'm in the lower FL Keys and I wish it was a cool/late spring for us, its been over 80 since March! Today its over 90. But it feels like triple digits. But I want to know if anyone grows dahlias here in south Florida? I'm thinking of trying some in a container.💚
That has happened to several tees in our area… sacadas really damage the trees when they lay their eggs
cannot wait to see when it is all in bloom
Good evening from Australia 🇦🇺
Awesome video, I’m glad we got to Dahlias, I love all your plant choices your garden is so gorgeous. You and Aaron have done such a great job.
I love watching your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and time to teach us something new on every video I watch.

Our trees all over our yard do this. It’s like it’s just the new growth popping up. Before I know it, the branch is covered in leaves.
Thanks for sharing.
Yay! We made it to dahlia planting! 💚💚💚
In northern illinois we often lose to top half of birch trees somewhat regularly. We just chop off the top and after a few years it fills back in
Is it due to weather, for instance warm up too early, cold snaps later on?
@@prairie2gem to be super honest I was never told what the reason was. I witnessed 4 birch trees being planted 4 different times. One was planted in a suburban backyard as a young tree B&b wrapped and on years 2 or 3 the top half died so we replaced it. The replacement did the same thing. So we gave up and just chopped off the top. After a few years it looked normal again. Later we moved a country property and experienced the same thing. This time they were larger spaded in trees. After the first died on Top we replaced it with a smaller larger tree not spaded in this time. It also died on top on year 2 or 3. They all showed the damage spring to early summer. The best we could do was again chop off the top and let it regrow. It’s now almost 15-20 years old and looks fine. But it’s just this weird phenomenon. 🤷🏼♂️
Really? I have never seen or experienced that, and I have lived in Rockford and north of it all my life, 82 years now. Of Course i am not a landscaper, are you? Sounds interesting to me. My river birch throws out a lot of twiggy branches every time we have a big wind and my neighbors birch looks dead this spring. Mine is about ten years older than theirs and mine is looking good. I have a white paper birch, also, that never has amounted to much, but it doesn’t have any obvious problems. Just seems to be very slow growing. Mine are 20 years old.
@@dianeweeks352 hi neighbor! The first property was my childhood home in Elgin and that’s were we first ran into this strange anomaly. The second property was our Hampshire home. That property was a blank canvas of 4+ acres of former pasture land with no trees except for two scrub oaks that planted themselves along the property line. Over the course of probably 8-10 years my parents had a working arrangement with a local tree spading service and they would buy cheap large trees that needed to be planted or the spade company would take a loss. We likely planted 60-80 trees on the property that way with a few exceptions being the birches which were full price new nursery plants. I’m not a landscaper but with years of witnessing all sorts of massive trees and projects being done I learned a lot. The landscapers were not shocked when the tops of the birch trees died. They essentially implied it happens more time than not.
My suspicion is birches are temperamental and aren’t happy if moved You almost need to just plant a tiny one and let it grow to size in its permanent home. If you try to move even a 2” trunk plant your likely to run into this problem down the road. But I’m not an expert. But when I saw Laura planted the birch I was thinking to myself I wonder if the top half is going to die. And she did that when the chicken coop was installed which was what? 2 years ago? It falls in line with the time line I experienced. 🤷🏼♂️
@@ExperimentsOfThought How interesting, thx for sharing.

Hello all from Colorado Springs! We are in the throws of a spring snow storm 😳 🥶 got about a foot of snow, that snapped a few of the maple branches😭 this happens her every time we're in "la niña" Laura I think that's why you've had a cool wet spring.
I love how we're learning right along with you, and viewers input who are going through similar situations.
Aaron, way to guard your beautiful wife❤
Regarding the tree that has leafless branches, did you ask the tree people when they came for advise? If not maybe a photo could be sent to them. Just a thought.
We have also had a cold and wet spring in northern Arkansas and my weeping birch had the same issue, most of it is leafed out and beautiful but some of it hasn't leafed out at all. The part that hasn't leafed out still has buds and green underneath, so hopefully it will push new growth this year.
Excited for the dahlias! I’ve been leaving my dahlias in the ground with not much special treatment (zone 6b) and have had them come back every year. It can be so much work to get it pulled out I can imagine
