Wow Professor, you are a genius. I have not heard such insightful and precise description of narcissistic psychopath behaviour and its target for a long time. You are absolutely right when you describe the victim finally making a choice to leave as narcissistic decision and at the same time feeling responsible for the abuser, even for his well being. Thank you for validating such event.
I have watched both movies as a teenager and both made an impression on me, especially Truman Show. I remember getting home from the cinema being sad and shocked from the enormity of lies and deception. Unbeknown to me It was a prelude to my life unfortunately. Luckily though, I have walked through that door in the end.

Lol so fascinating. I use to use the Truman show to explain how I felt when I realized how deep the deception was in my life with my sort of famous narcissistic ex husband.
In fact, at one time I found myself watching some
Consequential events of my life unfold through the eyes of others, with nearly the same level of voyeurism and distance. It was trauma porn. I had put so many defense mechanisms, that I had become obsessed with engaging in my own destruction form the safe distance of my home computer. The narc controlling ever bit of it.
This really destroyed my mental health for a very long time, I am
Mostly on the other side of it now but wow… 41:05 made me cry because of how true. I walked with two young kids that everyday are being made to feel the consequences of that decision. It’s hard not to see that choice as narcissistic- I’ve hated myself for making it.
Ultimately it was the only way to save myself
and them from empty abusive lives. specifically for them a chance to not become the same.

Trumans #1 motivation was to find the girl who told him the truth. She planted a seed of doubt that grew when the light fell. As his surety grew his singular purpose was to find her. Thats why he left.

This is very interesting - here in the UK, the case of the psychopathic Narcissistic murderer Ben Field is very much in the news because the BBC made a drama about it called "The sixth commandment". Ben Field was a student in an affluent area who murdered his elderly professor and then attempted to do the same to an elderly woman nearby. In both cases he convinced them that he was in a relationship with them despite the massive age gap, then he drugged them over a long period, making out that their health was declining and getting them to change their wills in his favour. They were both very religious and he took advantage of his position in the church to manipulate them. Interestingly, the Criminologist Professor David Wilson wrote a book about the case and he believed that Field was minicking the characters in the books he had studied with the professor - The Talented Mr Ripley, and Frankenstein.

So basically if we had narc parents, to leave them, we have to make a narc decision? Or did I misinterpret that? as is Truman’s situation, he left the show.

Mr. Vaknin, would this mean then that the only choice that's real is a painful one which would also seem irrational?
Especially in the example of a mother choosing which child to condemn to death and which one to save I believe can be objectively seen as downright insane but I think we could also agree there were and are mothers through the history and the world which had to make this choice.

These was the most informative so far from all the videos, I feel like I was in a Truman show. Its been 5 years I left after 30 years. Left with nothing, I was 49 two angry adult kids who blame me they hate that the show was over , they have to work and leave in the real world they don't know how .He disabled them, They are angry and upset blaming me for not staying. He liquidated all our assets left. He even lied to the attorneys, they couldn't do anything, and my kids were working against me also he used them. I feel my life was a lie . I left him , there life's got ruined he cut them off, He didn't speak to them for 5 years now. I don't know what to do. They hate me also.

Dont watch videos about narcisist. Because i am not sure anybody can survive 30years with clinical narcisist and make 2 kids.
Sam Vaknin is speaking about clinical narcisist, psychopaths.
There is a big diffrence between someone with narcisistic traits that we all have.
      And clinical narcisist, psychopaths.
True narcisist would not be so long in marriage and make 2 kids. He will either go away or destroy you way sooner.
I dont think you are dealing with narcisist.

Fascinating commentary, I really appreciated this, thank you.
The Truman Show is a powerful metaphor for narcissistic abuse, especially I think when viewed through the lens of a narcissistic parental or romantic dynamic.
Some thoughts on watching it awhile back.
Truman is objectified from the outset. Being chosen for his role in the show merely due to his birth, his arrival on the seen being a convenient act of timing.
Early on he is trauma bonded into the fantasy by the fabricated death of his father. Which is then used to instill fear in him at any point in which he tries to escape the delusion he is living under, his explorative nature as a child or any attempt by him to leave and he is deliberately traumatised back, often via the use of actors which yes are playing their own roles in this delusion for their own perceived rewards.
His own denial of obvious facts of reality, such as a studio light falling from the sky etc, eventually cause the dichotomy in his mind to grow to an unbearable point. He is still not free of the illusion and not close to the truth yet but as the schism in his mind has grown so great, that as an intuitive act of survival he begins to escape, his intellect and felt experience start to reconnect the mental schism of dichotomies which narcissistic abuse causes.
The integration of these opposing factors in his mind can be viewed both literally as a breakdown, his perception of reality crumbling and the rewiring and healing of his own mind and perceptions, and also as being used as a form of gaslighting by his fellow actors to keep him from escape, " I think you are having a breakdown", both of which are common experiences of people suffering such like abusive situations.
Truman sets sail to escape, still not knowing quite why.
Yes the producer is god in this delusion and as such like is often typical with this type of abuse would rather Truman died instead of leaving by his own volition and not playing his designated role and so threatening the "reality", and in fact does try to kill him. Only when this fails and the foremast of Truman's boat actually breaks through the "sky" (this is a very poignant and powerful metaphor for the point of no complete return in to the delusion of narcissistic abuse) and Truman then finds the door, then does the producer/god/abuser try to charm/manipulate Truman back in to the delusion.
Many of us have walked back in willingly, knowing full well it is a harmful life atrophying one way sentence. Maybe without much choice or maybe taking our apparent rewards as payment, for the truth is that walking through a door in the sky is a very scary prospect.

Has anyone come across someone with extremely narcissistic traits but zero charisma?
I realise it’s futile to try and improper to try and ‘diagnose’, but I keep reading that superficial charm is a key feature of pure narcissism. The person I’m thinking of has absolutely no charm, ever. And yet is extremely controlling, manipulative, cruel. There are clear traits of narcissism (delusions of grandeur, inflated ego, constantly seeking supply including hostile supply)…. But no charisma.
Does this potentially fall in the category of psychopathic narcissist?
