    When I did the cam swap on my 02 LS1 Camaro, it wouldn’t run unless I left at least one of the O2 sensors unplugged. I figured it had something to do with the open loop and closed loop. Once it was dyno tuned, it was fine. It wasn’t great running before the tune but at least with the o2 sensor unplugged you should be able to drive it around until it is tuned.

    Great video! In case you want to know, The reason it seemed to run "ok" until it warmed up was because up to that point there were several different fuel and ignition multipliers that were being used as well as a higher idle speed for engine warm up. As soon as it came to operating temp, those multipliers were phased out and thats when you started having issues. This is the same reason you dont start dataloging for your tune until operating temp is reached. 😉

    base idle airflow - 15-16 across the board.
    base idle 700-775
    add a few more degrees of idle timing to help with the rev hang (bring revs down quicker)
    as well as cruising timing on decel.

    So, I did the same thing on a tahoe. The stock tune anyway. The IAC has trouble figuring out idle, but eventually it figured it out. Obviously it needs a tune, but just thought I’d chip in... for no real reason. But the cam I used doesn’t have a narrow lsa so idle quality isn’t much off stock.

    Hey try a stock LS1 tune I have a 99 trans am I swapped a LM7 in to it when my LS1 ate a couple of bearings 216/220 .560 114lsa flat top pistons 10.25:1 compression and home ported 862 heads all I did was adjust throttle body opening. She runs very good but a tad rich but she passes smog and everything can't wait to get a tune to see how much more power I can get out of my setup.

      SniderTron 3000 also when I looked at my fuel trims the ecu seemed to compensate for being rich, I'm in Cali and was still able to pass the sniffer test. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the LS1 tune is more forgiving because it was made for a larger displacement,

    It's the exact same principle as if you took a carburetors car and put a cam in it and did nothing to the carb settings or the timing. Surprise! It won't run. All obd2 is is a fancy carburetor and distributor, so what your doing when you tune is the same thing as turning the mixture screws out, setting the timing and adjusting the idle speed, only instead of a screwdriver and timing light you use a laptop.

    • @micah8258
      @micah8258 6 років тому

      so is that good or bad

    • @Dumbass_mechanic
      @Dumbass_mechanic 6 років тому +1

      Micah well. It depends on how you look at it, if you want to have a bigger cam it will make your engine run differently, if you don't want to tune then it's going to make your engine run poorly. If you put a cam in there has to be some degree of tuning that goes with it, the only tune free cam is one identical to the one you took out, or mmmaybe slightly different.

      When people that don't understand EFI try to to make it simple enough for them to wrap their head around, their explanation becomes laughable

    • @Dumbass_mechanic
      @Dumbass_mechanic 6 років тому +1

      Grady Farrer it isn't that I don't understand fuel injection, the question at hand was about putting in a big cam and keeping a stock tune. You can't do it for the same reason why you can't take an old carburetor car and put a big cam in it and not touch any adjustments on the carb or the distributor. Either way it isn't going to work. As complex as fuel injection is, it all boils down to air and fuel, and as complex as electronic ignition is, it all boils down to timing.

      @SniderTron3000  6 років тому

      Mic. D I'll definitely check out your videos. I'm definitely not an expert with tuning, but my first thought would be with the AC on the rpm raises just enough to float right above that really choppy idle. If that makes sense.

      @Mic.D 6 років тому

      SniderTron 3000 ahh that definitely makes sense now. Cause that exactly what it does. Rolls for a bit then drops back down and chops. But that’s something a tuner could adjust? Is it hard tuning it? Saw that you do your own tunes

    • @SniderTron3000

I'm trying to make a cam selection that makes good power sounds good but yet is pretty streetable for daily driving. how does the cam you use in this video work for day-to-day driving? What other modifications have you did to your engine or is it fairly stock? Factory truck intake? Higher stall converter? Also your truck sounded awesome what kind of exhaust were you running?

    • @SniderTron3000
      @SniderTron3000  2 роки тому +1

      This was stock converter and intake for a long time. If your mostly gonna drive it around, almost any "stage 1" or "stage 2" cam will be great for that. I think this Texas Speed Low Lift Stage 3 Truck Cam was great though. Good sound, good response, good power. It was about the limit for a stock converter

    • @Long-nd8bq

      Look at the new BTR Truck Norris cam. Makes more torque down low than any of the Stage 1-4 truck cams, and only a little less top end peak HP. Works with stock converter. For a truck you want a cam that makes torque rather than peaky high end HP.

    What's the biggest cam the 5.3 can get without having to reflash the ECU? Would it even be worth it to upgrade that little without changing the ECU?
    I've got a blown head gasket or cracked head so I figure if I'm down that far, I might as well replace the lifters. That got me to thinking about the cam. I'll already have it apart so I'm just kicking around ideas.

    • @SniderTron3000
      @SniderTron3000  6 років тому +1

      I think the stock cam size is like 191/190 .457"/.466" 114LSA and the BTR Stage 1 cam is 206/212 .525"/.534" 114+2 which seems like a pretty decent jump to still run on the stock tune. I think the biggest you could do is another factory cam, but even then you'd still be leaving a lot on the table. Like an LS6 cam would probably work, but to me it's not enough of a power gain to be worth the effort

      SniderTron 3000 yeah, if I'm going to remove all that stuff, I want to feel it in the seat of my pants.
      Changing the cam out and remapping is one of those things that is just on the "wouldn't be cool if I did...." list, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks for answering back so quickly.

      SniderTron 3000 I don’t want to go as far as changing my converter yet. I also plan on doing a few other mods before I send my pcm to get tuned. So what’s your opinion on what lift I should have and my stock converter is 2800 stall I think

    • @SniderTron3000
      @SniderTron3000  6 років тому +1

      Derrick Greb if you want/need to drive it for a while still. The smartest thing would probably be swap in like a 3k converter and whatever else it is you want to do because it'll most likely still run just fine with those mods. And then once you have a few days or so to send the pcm out for tuning, that's when you should do the cam swap.
      That's not what I would do, but it would probably be the most economical since you could still drive it, you know?
      If its a stock converter, it should be around 1200-1600 stall. Just do the foot brake test and you'll get a good idea.

I put a cam in my 2005 Cadillac CTS-V and it would die like that but after a little while it adjusted the idle and ran fine. I hope that's the case with my 2006 Sierra because I'm thinking of doing a cam and I'm gonna have to drive it to the tuner!
