Always glad to see what you are doing.
Thanks! 😄
Good to see you online again, Dan! Although, when your wife discovers her unauthorized cameo ... this could be the last anyone ever hears from you, LoL.
Thanks, and LOL. What, you think I'm crazy? I showed it to her before I published it! 😂
Looking great Dan!
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄
Good job Dan. I was glad to see another video.
Thanks! Me too. 😄
Such an amazing job!
Thanks! 😄
Looks so good. Great job. You are so funny and laid back.
Thanks! And that sounds like me. 😄
Nice. Thanks for sharing. Making the jig was a great idea!
Thanks! 😄
Nice work Dan, I always look forward to your videos 🍻
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄
Looks great 👍
Thanks! 😄
That's brilliant I love it
Thanks! 🙂
Looks amazing.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄
That is a really nice job well done!
Thanks! 😄
Nice Dan.
Thanks! 😄
Thank you the clear explanations.
You're quite welcome! 😄
Nice work covering over that red brick! I can picture the shiplap wider across and all the way down both sides!
Thanks! And I did enough. 😂
Nice job 👍🏾
Thanks! 🙂
Dude, you crack me up. Always fun and interesting to watch your videos.
Thanks! I appreciate it! 😄
Nice job.
Thanks! 😄
Another great video. I always love your content - it's always informative and useful, and maybe more importantly than that, it's just genuine. I appreciate how you show your mistakes and how you work around them...it not only makes me feel better about the mistakes I make but helps me learn how to work past mine, as well.
Thanks, and funny thing about the mistakes - I was watching a couple of Steve Ramsey videos last week (I think), and he made several of the kinds of mistakes I make all the time, which made me feel better about myself. So I get it, totally. 😄
I learn so much from my mistakes, thanks for being honest and sharing yours
@@yvettelovis2971 You're quite welcome! 🙂
Always educational and practical videos done to show what really happens and that we are all human and it's the outcome that matters. We just learn along the way. I might have added construction adhesive to hold the plywood up, but your way worked great. The other thing I'd have done differently is figured out a new tool I needed to get the job done. Since this is for the wife, no expense should interfere with a great result.
I agree with you Andy. If the wife wants something special done, the job requires a new tool. Even if you don't really use it for that particular project. That's how I've justified getting several of my new additions........lol.
You guys make me laugh. That's how I have most of the tools I have - every new wife project allowed me to get new tools. 😄
So you have any tips when it’s the wife that wants the new tools? Just kidding, my husband is very supportive.
@@anneoreilly4900 Same rules apply, of course. 😄
Thanks for including metric measurements in brackets.
You're welcome. I know people appreciate it, even though very few mention it. So thanks for letting me know you appreciate it! 🙂
Just found your channel. Love it, finnaly found someone who makes just as many mistakes as I do.
😂 Nice to know I have company! 😄
Heh. I just did something sort of similar. I'm renoing an old upstairs area with ancient (pine, I think) tongue and groove flooring. The catch is that I have ripped a stairwell and a chimney out, as well as pushed out the pony walls and removed an unsupported section of floor, so I had a bunch of patching to do. Knowing I would never find matching tongue and groove anyway, I purchased a few sheets of 3/4" birch plywood, added faux joists to make the plywood match the surface height of the existing boards, and then cut shallow lines to imitate the groove, using just my circular saw.
Granted, the floor will always look a bit patchy (it did to begin with; it was a pretty poor tongue and groove install), but I plan on disguising it a bit with a neutral, dark grey wood dye and a dull finish.
Cool! We do what we can. 😄
Inspirational! Almost makes me want to take the risk and attack some of that "ugly stuff" in our 60 year old home! I've always thought a "medicine cabinet" sunk into the wall between studs (with the "center" stud removed) would be a great idea... no guts... like I said, almost makes me want to risk it! Such a wuss I am! LOL Thanks for taking the time to create and post your project videos - much more work than the actual project! Thanks again - it is very much appreciated!
Thanks. Yeah, I understand about risks. Fortunately this one wasn't too risky. 😄
Interesting project. It turned out very well. (although I can't say I like the plywood shiplap more than the brick chimney) Thanks for sharing the video.
Thanks, Hans, and I'm with you. I actually liked the brick better, but the wife always wins. 😄
Since she wanted it left rough you could have just bought a sheet of T1-11 siding. Comes in 4" and 8" OC gap spacing. But more fun to make it.
It's the "more fun to make it" that had us making this. Wife's been bragging about what I made for her. 😄
Nice to see the video. I was wondering if you were coming back.
Yeah, sorry about the radio silence. I should be back to more regular videos now (I hope). Fingers crossed. 😄
Great job old man!!! J/K. The only thing i would have done different was cut 45's on the corners so the dado flows around the corner. It sure looks better then the brick. 👍👍
Thanks. I thought about mitered edges, but I knew I'd never get them right, especially on panels that large. 😄
It is Nice to see you back Dan😀 not be critical however if you wanted to sell your house plywood one fire place could be no go item in CA. 😀🛫
Thanks. Honestly, it's not a true wood-burning fireplace. It's gas, which is now disconnected. The chimney (or whatever you want to call it) was never real brick - the brick is just a covering we added years ago. If memory serves, we put the brick over over drywall that was attached to 2x4s. So I don't think adding plywood would make much difference. But considering this IS California, it wouldn't surprise me if we violated some sort of code. At least we didn't build it out of plastic straws! 😮
Good job...it looks light years better than the brick
For whatever reason I still like the brick, but as my brother told me a long time ago "Listen to your wife. She has good taste. You don't." 😄
Nice! I’ve been house hunting and have seem some really ugly mantles that needed something like that.
LOL. I totally get that. 😄
Newbie you did a good job even though you keep degrading your work, I think it looks great. Keep it up.
Thanks, and yes, I have a strong tendency to degrade my work. It's the "imposter syndrome" - I never want anyone to think I think too highly of myself, so instead I go the other way. But I'm OK with that - I can sleep at night. 😄
When pushing your router it will want to pull to the left. So you will want your fence on the right side from the perspective of a push.
Thanks - excellent point.
@@TheNewbieWoodworker correct. route from left to right, then right to left on the routing table. should be much easier to control. :)
@@rsngrl 👍
In my opinion, you should have routed the corners so that the "lap" was continuous. I know that would have been difficult routing on the edge of the wood but would have looked better and more like "laps" to me.
I agree 100%. But since this was my first time trying this, my wife and I decided that was asking for trouble. But yeah, it would have been better.
Looks nice . You sound like me , I always go by measure twice cut once , but I still can mess it up .O well .
LOL, me too. My wife made me a plaque that says "measure once cuss twice", but for me no matter how many times I measure, cussing invariaby ensues. 😂
Darn.... cut it twice and it's STILL too short!
@@jvaran5618 That sounds like me. 😄
Did you notch the ends of the face pieces so the groves appear to go around the corner? I was glad to see you made the right and left angles on your boards since you didn't do it that way on your cut list. Is that a real fire place or is it electric? Not a good idea to use wood right over the fire opening. Just trying to look out for you.
I decided not to notch the ends, and it looks OK, so I think I'll go with it. Good catch on the cut list - that would have sucked! It's a gas fireplace but we have the gas turned off and don't use it anymore. But it was never "real" brick - the brick is just a facade, so it was always flamable.
Hi Dan, Great job on this project. Looks really good and you must have got lots of bonus points fro SWMBO. Take care Dan. Cheers, Huw
LOL - she doesn't demand obedience, but I fall in line anyway. 😛Thanks, Huw.
question what was the software you used for laying it out on the computer?
SketchUp.
I see you have a tree house for cats....did you make it? If not I think it would be a nice project, don’t you think?
It is a really nice tree house, at least for our slightly undersized cat. I've thought about making one, but honestly, since we already bought two of these, I think that will have to wait. 😄
You made the wife happy = you succeeded.
You got that right! 😄
Looks nice. Unfortunately for me this would not be to code. Covering the chimny with a burnable material, even when you have bricks on the inside. But the rules are diffrent from place to place. Enjoined watching. Ty.
Thanks, and I'm beginning to suspect that this may, indeed, not be up to code for where I live. But since we've lived in this house for 34 years, I don't see us selling it anytime soon. 😄
Nice job, looks good. Not bad for an old fart. lol :) keep the vids coming.
😂Thanks.
The whole thing would be called a Chimney Breast then you have the mantle and the over and under mantle areas.
Thanks for the info.
The Newbie WoodworkerI don’t know about you but it chaps my a$$ when people paint over a brick fireplace! I just had to get that out. Thanks for listening. 😎
@@terristroh3965 It's not real brick. Well, I suppose it technically is, but the brick is about 1/4" thick. We put it on many, many years ago.
That HF router might be ok, but that bit is absolute junk - the burns are related to cut speed/depth but the edges shouldn't look like that unless you used it to plow through nails! If you want cheap-but-still-usable bits, Yonico (on Amazon) or Rockler's house brand are not too bad. If you're working on a project that's going to be highly visible, using a quality bit (Freud, Whiteside, Amana, Orange/LMT, etc.) is well worth the investment.
Thanks. I actually have plenty of good bits on hand, but I didn't want to use them for this project.
your wife has cool ideas :p Have you read the comments on Steve Ramsey youtube video from today? :p
Thanks. No, I haven't had a chance. Why?
@@TheNewbieWoodworker take your time to check them ;) Steve wanted to put his fellow woodworking channels, especially those smaller ones, in the spotlight. Guess who is mentioned a few times and why ... :P
@@sledgeHammerRulez Thanks for letting me know!
Better your house than mine. Too Plain.
I know nothing. I just do what the wife says. 😄
Hi I do hope that is not a working fireplace, as you know wood burns.
😂 No, it's not a working fireplace. But you make a valid point! 😄
This looks horrible, and what makes it more disappointing is that it looked just right before that shiplap cover!
It's only a cover. The brickwork wasn't damaged and he can always take the cover off again when his wife comes round to your point of view.
To each their own!
While I wouldn't say it looks horrible, I agree the brick looks better. But always keep the wife happy, and also, I know I have no taste. 😄
@@robt2151 Actually, the bricks were those thin pieces of brick we stuck on a long time ago. I ended up ripping some of them out to get a more even surface. So if we ever take this off, we've got some work to do. 😳
Hi that’s looks worse than the brick 🧱 work sorry 😐.
No apology needed. You're not the only one who feels that way. 😄 But the only one who matters is my wife. 😉
