Hans, it always surprises me to see that people actually click the "thumbs down" on your videos.. I can't imagine what there is not to like. On the other hand you inspired me to get involved with metal detecting, so 2 years ago when my wife asked what I would like as a Yule gift I told her I wanted a metal detector. I have never found things as interesting as your finds, but I remain hopeful. Happy hunting!
don't waste your time on thinking about that my friend. It's sad enough that these people are so negative. keep on detecting.. there is a fantastic find waiting for you somewhere :) thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
Very exciting stuff, Hans! I recently found a bottle dump here in America that I think ranges from the early 1900s to around the 1950s. It's always thrilling to find things that were lost or thrown away so long ago.
there is always the possibility that people of the past accidentally dumped things of value. so good luck on your bottle dump :) thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
I'm so jealous. I always go back and watch your video where you found the spear tip from the bronze age. I get so excited seeing these beautiful artifacts discovered once again. The forest is a plentiful place, as are the fields. Excellent work!!
hello olivia, this was on of the most exciting detecting moments so far. I couldn't believe what I had found.I would love to detect woodland but permissions for the forest are very hard to get. meanwhile the nighthawks are haunting the woods and robbing our history. sad thing. thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
I'm happy to hear that, thank you for watching. check the german metal detecting laws before you bring your detector. I don't want you to get in trouble with the police. thank you for watching and for your kind comment. all the best, hans
Hans, Your videos are absolutely amazing. You must be a professional videographer! Very nice finds. Thank you for taking us along with you; always enjoyable!
hello melvin, thank you for watching and for your kind and flattering comment! I'm an autodidact when it comes to filming. I'm happy to hear that you find them professional :) all the best, hans
My wife and I like your videos very much. You seem like such a kind person. I started detecting in the early 1960's with a mail order detector with a laminated wood head and went out again today. God bless and happy hunting.
I'm happy to hear that edward, please say hello to your wife. 1960s? wow! you belong to the pioneers of metal detecting! thank you for paving the way for a great hobby. thank you for watching and for your kind comment! all the best and good hunting, hans
thank you for watching my friend, I'm glad you like my video! I love these samian ware shards. imagine how spectacular these bowls and jars must have been.
I don't think I have ever seen a complete Roman hair ping before, I didn't realise how long they were! Your hard work certainly had fantastic results Hans, so many wonderful finds that have been saved for the future. It must be very rewarding for you and the archaeologists to add them to the other finds. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us, for filming and editing takes time but we learn and enjoy the results. Take care my friend, good luck and happy hunting Mary-Ellen UK
hello mary-ellen, it's amazing how this thing thing could survive all these centuries. not even the mechanical digger could break it. great find :) thank you for watching and for appreciating my work. your kind comment is appreciated too my friend. all the best and take care too, hans
Another fantastic and educational video Hans! You admire the archaeologists so much but they are the lucky ones to have you on the dig. You have such passion and hunger for saving relics. I await more of your professional videos and awesome finds. GL & HH my friend.
thank you my friend, I'm happy to hear that :) It's give and take I guess... I offer my voluntary work and they impart knowledge... it was indeed hard work but it payed dividends. all these finds would have been lost so no I can sleep better :D thank you for watching! all the best, GL&HH! hans
Very nice video Hans ! I also enjoyed the footage of the footpath in the previous videos but to find a denarius, fibula, copper coins, pottery, etc in a two day dig is fabulous ! It's been a while since I've been detecting myself due to problems with the shoulder but then there are always your videos to look out for ! GL & HH !
hello johan, thank you, I'm glad you like it. I will return to the path. I'm saving it for "rainy days" ;) I hope your shoulder will be better soon and that you can go for it again! thank you for watching and for your kind comment! all the best, GL&HH! hans
Give the man his own TV series! Hans, you really are that good and certainly better than most of the rubbish on TV these days. It looked to be hard work but what wonderful finds which would otherwise have been lost. Thank you for sharing, me old mucker, and look forward to seeing more of these digs. Take care.
haha. . thank you my friend, but I prefer to be my own boss and to do my own thing. it was indeed hard work and I could still feel it days after the toil. the finds I've made made it worth the pain. thank you for watching and for your kind comment john! take care too and all the best, hans
Wonderful finds!!! I'm so glad they let you take the time to knock down those earth piles. I know how hard it is to do that as I have done the same for 40 years or more. Construction the hard way my whole life. Thank you for your ambition!!
glad you like them my friend. It was indeed a very hard work and you feel it in your bones the next day if you are not used to this kind of work. I would do it again anytime though as it was worth the toil! thank you for watching!
I decided to distract myself from the horrible bushfires we're having here in Australia by watching some of your great videos. It's been a while since it rained here and it actually rained here while watching this. Hoping for more rain and great videos when you can get past your winter over there. Cheers Hans on your great work.
we are following the news about these horrible fires here in germany and our thoughts and prayers are with you. relatives of my family also live in australia. thank you for watching and for your kind words! all the best and greetings from germany, hans
Another excellent video as usual Hans , how great is it to get the chance of working on such a fantastic site with people who really care for the history , thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience
thank you andrew, I'm happy to hear you like it! the district archaeologist built a team of volunteers for excavations and other archaeological projects. we learn a lot and we have some very skilled people in this team. thank you for watching!
these samian ware pieces are amazing. they are so well produced... it's hard to believe that they are almost 2000 years old. thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend! all the best and good hunting, hans
Omg, your best vid yet, wonderful history! Thank You for bringing it to us/me. I love when you speak in your native tongue! Thank you for captions. My dad *who was Sicilian...spoke to me in German while I was growing up, he was learning it in college. He also was fluent in Latin, and Italian and Spanish as well as his native tongue of Sicilian. He passed in '05 & my life has not been the same since. It filled my heart with memories of him, to hear you speak. Thank you, for explaining the layering. Great interesting vid. Lucky they allowed you all to excavate & search!
you think so? :) thank you, I'm happy to hear that you like my new video and that you don't mind me speaking german. sorry to hear about your father...as long as you remember him and think about him he will never leave you. thank you for watching and for your kind comment! all the best, hans
Ah, to be part of this kind of a dig would be wonderful. How lovely of you to volunteer, I can imagine the excitement with each new find. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
It is indeed a lot of fun and very educational. detecting the roman finds horizon is super exciting as you know that every signal has to be something old. thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
Brilliant video, camera work and production all add to a wonderful professional overview. I always look forward to your posts, I know I will be both entertained, educated and interested in your adventures. Thank you again.
Hi Hans very Nice video! Nice for us 2 see how it all works on a archeological site! Normally you don't see this things ofcourse...I love the silver fibula very much what a beauty!! Take care and see you later... grtz boukje
hello boukje, glad you like it my friend :) I would love to make more excavation videos. it's always so interesting and educational. the fibula is indeed beautiful and I'm glad I could save it. thank you for watching and for your kind comment :) all the best and take care, too. hans
Really nice co-operation with the archaeologists and it looked like you were the only one digging, first to arrive and last to leave. Pure determination, lol You found some great stuff too. GL&HH
haha. . that's exactly the case.. I couldn't leave the site before I finished at least one pile. It's still nagging to think what else could be buried under the overburden. thank you for watching richard :) GL&HH! hans
lol, I knew that would be the case as that is what anyone truly interested in searching and finding true history would do. You're a credit to the hobby. GL&HH
It is fascinating indeed... some history and amazing finds... And Hans is so interesting... :-) I watched twice, this morning and tonight. It's very didactic. The reason why the coins were not degraded is that they were likely kept away from oxygen in a layer of clay... Thank you for this video. I hope you volunteer for more archaeological excavation ... :-) 👍👍👍👍👍👍
hello :) glad you like my video and that you even watched it twice :) the lack of oxygen is also the reason why the wooden board could survive. I'm looking forward to hearing the age of it. thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend.
Hans, Thank You very much for another very interesting and informative episode. Your determination and toil certainly resulted with some Beautiful finds! Well done!
hello ed, thank you for watching my new videos, I'm glad you like it :) I can still feel the toil :D but it was definitely worth all the hard work. all the best, hans
Hans, I learned so much from your video! I do agree the Roman treasures were worth your efforts. I bet you slept well that night! 😄 It's interesting to see the "everyday" relics resting along side the "higher status" relics. They were very ornate! Hans, I'm thankful for your hard work in finding and sharing the site's awesome history. Till next time......Happy Hunting!!
hello pamela :) sorry for the late reply! I'm happy to hear that you've learned something. I only pass on the things that I learn on the excavations. haha. . I slept sooo well indeed! but the next morning was a bit painful :D thank you for watching and for appreciating my work pamela! all the best to you my friend! hans
Hi Hans, It’s so cool you can do those diggs and safe some history. Like always, awesome video! The bird was happy and thankfull too ;-) Thanks for sharing my friend, wish you all the best, GL&HH Don
hello don, It was hard and painful work but it was worth the toil. I'm really pleased with the things I was able to rescue. thank you for watching and commenting my friend! all the best and always good hunting, hans
Hello Hans, I really enjoyed this video. So many fabulous finds and your diagrams explaining the dig sight are very helpful. I will never get to go on a dig like this and I appreciate you sharing your experiences. The shards are very beautiful and can only imagine what it is like to hold those old artifacts in your hands. Thanks for another enjoyable video, well done! Wishing you all the best, Victoria
Hallo Hanzel mein freund, you've got such a privilege to "hunt" on these places! Wow, what an astonishing finds! And also the pieces of pottery. Love this vid, keep up the good work and take care!!!
haha. . hello benny my friend, I'm happy that it was possible to film on the dig. it's not self- evident! thank you for watching and for your kind comment. I'm glad you like my video! all the best and take care, too, hans
Wow Hans !.Another great dig ! You worked hard for those shards !..heheh ! and the coins, incredible history Hans. Good job ! Imagine how much remains covered...too deep for detectors, throughout Germany ! I picture a huge cache of silver and gold coins just waiting for you Hans ! ...heheheh...But I know you love the relics and the shards, I do too ! So interesting to know that someone was using that jug, or bowl, of hair pin, in that exact area !... 2,000 years ago.! Cool ! Good Man ! : ) .Thanks for sharing your finds with us Hans. Take care my friend. matt (N.M.C.)
hello matt, thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend. haha... I hope you are right about the silver and gold coin cache :D if only the relics and shards could talk and tell their story. that would be amazing :) all the best and take care too, hans
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed my video :) thank you for watching! I'm very pleased with the finds I could rescue from being cart away. It was worth the hard work. thank you for watching!
great finds Hans; a Roman house site maybe?; seems like a lot of finds for a small area; is this part of a Roman town site; when I was in Koln I went to a roman musuem; it was fantastic to see all those artifacts from every day roman life; just in your video you could fill a musuem display case; it was so interesting seeing the archeological dig with the different soil levels; makes me want to be there digging in the ground for artifacts; the excitement; thank you Hans
hello kevim, it seems to be a dumping site. there once was a stream which the romans used to dump litter. the construction is close to a roman bath house and a fort is nearby too. thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend! all the best, hans
Hallo!!!!!
Fantastic video Hans really enjoyable to watch, this must have been an interesting dig for you, the archeological team must be very happy that you took the time and effort to go back through the spoil heap and save the shreds and that beautiful fibula brooch. GL&HH Alex
hello alex, I'm happy to hear that my friend, thank you for watching! the archaeologists are always happy and grateful for voluntary work. unfortunately archaeology isn't very well funded in germany and they suffer from staff shortage. all the best, hans
Another gem of a video Hans, terrific finds, always enjoy the little vignettes of nature and wildlife. I have joined two local historical groups and I get great information on potential detecting sites. Keep up the good (and hard) work 😉
hello steve, thank you my friend, I'm happy to hear you like my video and the finds. the office of my responsible archaeologist is full of super interesting maps showing archaeological sites... but even though i prefer to detect unregistered fields as there is the chance to discover something new :) thank you for watching :)
Hallo Hans! I found your channel trough my husband and I've been binge watching your videos ever since. We moved from Canada to Germany 3 years ago and I love these types of videos where you speak German and put English sub-titles because it helps me understand German more (and I understand your German very well). I would love to do some metal detecting here in Germany. Probably when my German is better (since you probably have to ask permission to the landowner before). Liebe Grüße!
hello julie, I'm happy to hear that you like my videos and that you stay tuned to my channel :) I guess I have to make more german videos with subtitles then :D the permission of the farmers are relatively easy to get.. it's will be more difficult to obtain the necessary permission of the department of archaeology. without this permission it is illegal to detect in germany even if you have the landowners allowance. with a bit of preparation you can make it :) thank you for watching and liebe grüße zurück, hans
Thanks for this fascinating video. You are so lucky to have that opportunity. The shard with the figures is stunning; amazing, as is the unworn denarius. Worth the blisters!
hello :) I'm glad you watched my video anyways and that you like it :) haha. . that's a good idea. i don't know why I can't get used to take it out of my backpack. . thank you for watching and for your kind comment :)
Hans, thanks for a great video. This site is awesome. I will take all you can produce. I can see up putting up a tent on this site and discovering mind blowing items. Thanks again and be well and stay healthy. Chuck in NJ
That was very good Hans. I liked sitting at my computer and watching you toil away with that shovel. I felt helping you but I soon suppressed that silly idea ,and settled back to watch. My veggie Garden needs a digging over interested ?
thank you mark! detecting excavations is great. I would have never been able to reach these interesting layers with my detector. the thought what else got lost in the spoil heap is nagging. thank you for watching!
@@TerraGermaniaTG Agreed! I was checking the spoil heap at Silchester and found a pin, some coins, a strange little bronze box and a fibula. Archaeologists working without a detectorist are going to miss stuff. I was only able to check the top 15 cm of the spoil heap as well. There was a lot that I missed. One of the coins was a first century silver with very little wear that pushed the probable date of the site back. All that said, I was detecting illegally even though I had permission of the archaeological team because they didn't have permission for geophysics which is just crazy. It is not like it can do any harm.
i think it is rather careless that universities doesn't provide courses on how to use a metal detector on excavations. it seems as if metal detectors are seen as devils work for for many conservative archaeologists and they would rather grab a glowing rod than touching this helpful device. I had some strange experiences with archaeologists of this kind. fortunately the archaeologists of my district are young and modern and they see the advantages of the appropriate usage of detectors.
@@TerraGermaniaTG It is not that long ago that an archaeologist was a person with a spade and an interest - and we are experts in our way. We should be able to find common ground if you will excuse the expression.
thank you jan :) I would love to make more videos like that. thank you for watching and for your kind comment! all the best and greetings from germany, hans

Understanding the Roman Empire is to understanding ourselves.
TerraGermania Italian clay I'm sure they didn't transport empty vessels. Product and useful vessels.
That is a lot of work but great finds. Those coins are amazingly fresh looking.

glad you like it my friend :) I would love to make more excavation videos. it's always so interesting and educational. the fibula is indeed beautiful and I'm glad I could save it. thank you for watching and for your kind comment :)
all the best and take care, too.
hans
Really nice co-operation with the archaeologists and it looked like you were the only one digging, first to arrive and last to leave.
Pure determination, lol
You found some great stuff too.
GL&HH
haha. . that's exactly the case.. I couldn't leave the site before I finished at least one pile. It's still nagging to think what else could be buried under the overburden.
thank you for watching richard :)
GL&HH!
hans
lol, I knew that would be the case as that is what anyone truly interested in searching and finding true history would do.
You're a credit to the hobby.
GL&HH
thank you richard :)
GL&HH!
hans
It is fascinating indeed... some history and amazing finds...
And Hans is so interesting... :-) I watched twice, this morning and tonight. It's very didactic.
The reason why the coins were not degraded is that they were likely kept away from oxygen in a layer of clay... Thank you for this video. I hope you volunteer for more archaeological excavation ... :-) 👍👍👍👍👍👍
hello :)
glad you like my video and that you even watched it twice :) the lack of oxygen is also the reason why the wooden board could survive. I'm looking forward to hearing the age of it.
thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend.
Great video again Hans. Lovely finds revealing the everyday items of Roman life.
thank you for watching and for your kind comment jussyB :)
Hans,
Thank You very much for another very interesting and informative episode.

hans
Hans, I learned so much from your video! I do agree the Roman treasures were worth your efforts. I bet you slept well that night! 😄 It's interesting to see the "everyday" relics resting along side the "higher status" relics. They were very ornate! Hans, I'm thankful for your hard work in finding and sharing the site's awesome history. Till next time......Happy Hunting!!
hello pamela :)
sorry for the late reply! I'm happy to hear that you've learned something. I only pass on the things that I learn on the excavations. haha. . I slept sooo well indeed! but the next morning was a bit painful :D thank you for watching and for appreciating my work pamela! all the best to you my friend!
hans

Take care my friend. matt (N.M.C.)
hello matt,
thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend. haha... I hope you are right about the silver and gold coin cache :D if only the relics and shards could talk and tell their story. that would be amazing :)
all the best and take care too,
hans

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed my video :) thank you for watching! I'm very pleased with the finds I could rescue from being cart away. It was worth the hard work.
thank you for watching!
great finds Hans; a Roman house site maybe?; seems like a lot of finds for a small area; is
this part of a Roman town site; when I was in Koln I went to a roman musuem; it was fantastic to see all those artifacts from every day roman life; just in your video you could fill a musuem display case; it was so interesting seeing the archeological dig with the different soil levels; makes me want to be there digging in the ground for artifacts; the excitement; thank you Hans
hello kevim,
it seems to be a dumping site. there once was a stream which the romans used to dump litter. the construction is close to a roman bath house and a fort is nearby too.
thank you for watching and for your kind comment my friend!
all the best,
hans
Great finds! So much history in that one small area.
thank you for watching :)
Hello Hans, Great finds, so interesting. The ground looks so rich to grow there. Beautiful denarius. GL/ HH.
It was very exciting to detect there... the dark earth tells you about the rich history of this place. thank you for watching and always good hunting!

hans
Fantastic video Hans really enjoyable to watch, this must have been an interesting dig for you, the archeological team must be very happy that you took the time and effort to go back through the spoil heap and save the shreds and that beautiful fibula brooch.
GL&HH
Alex
hello alex,
I'm happy to hear that my friend, thank you for watching! the archaeologists are always happy and grateful for voluntary work. unfortunately archaeology isn't very well funded in germany and they suffer from staff shortage.
all the best,
hans
Another gem of a video Hans, terrific finds, always enjoy the little vignettes of nature and wildlife. I have joined two local historical groups and I get great information on potential detecting sites.
Keep up the good (and hard) work 😉
hello steve,
thank you my friend, I'm happy to hear you like my video and the finds. the office of my responsible archaeologist is full of super interesting maps showing archaeological sites... but even though i prefer to detect unregistered fields as there is the chance to discover something new :)
thank you for watching :)
Heel intresant en leuk om te zien !!bedankt voor deze mooie video Belgium! ✌
bedankt :)
Liebe Grüße!
hello julie,
I'm happy to hear that you like my videos and that you stay tuned to my channel :) I guess I have to make more german videos with subtitles then :D
the permission of the farmers are relatively easy to get.. it's will be more difficult to obtain the necessary permission of the department of archaeology. without this permission it is illegal to detect in germany even if you have the landowners allowance. with a bit of preparation you can make it :) thank you for watching and liebe grüße zurück,
hans
@@TerraGermaniaTG Thank you very much for the great advice! Can't wait for your next video! Schönes Wochenende!
my pleasure :) auch dir ein schönes wochenende!
What A brilliant video enjoyed archaeological dig some great finds we’ll done
Thanks for this fascinating video. You are so lucky to have that opportunity. The shard with the figures is stunning; amazing, as is the unworn denarius. Worth the blisters!
Fun watch...Great Job again!
glad to hear that my friend :) thank you for watching!
Thank's for sharing of your experience
my pleasure.. thank you for watching!
UA-cam had not notified me of this video!
Awesome as always Hans! You should wear the pinpointer as a collar to not forget it 😂😂
hello :) I'm glad you watched my video anyways and that you like it :)
haha. . that's a good idea. i don't know why I can't get used to take it out of my backpack. .
thank you for watching and for your kind comment :)
forgot your pin pointer! You need to strap it to your detector! Great video. Fascinating.
I'm planning to do that, it's a good idea! thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
Hans, thanks for a great video. This site is awesome. I will take all you can produce. I can see up putting up a tent on this site and discovering mind blowing items. Thanks again and be well and stay healthy.

Wow! A lot of work, but great finds- well done!
it was indeed a lot of work but I'm so happy with the outcome :) thank you for watching!
That was very good Hans. I liked sitting at my computer and watching you toil away with that shovel. I felt helping you but I soon suppressed that silly idea ,and settled back to watch. My veggie Garden needs a digging over interested ?
If you bury some shards and coins I'm in ;) thank you for watching mate!
LOL Okay. Shards it is .I get them off the kitchen floor when I'm smart enough to duck that is.
Love your enthusiasm, true determination to do the best job possible.
Great videos.
Lovely finds.
Keep them coming
thank you my friend, I'm happy to hear that! thank you for watching and for appreciating what I do!
all the best and good hunting,
hans
really nice video. informative with interesting finds
Fantastic work, rescuing some excellent artefacts. I have helped a little at digs and I love doing it. Brilliant.
thank you mark! detecting excavations is great.
That was a great video. Thank you from Wisconsin, USA.
I really enjoy your videos .. Very informative and you love human history as much as I do. Thank you !
I'm happy to hear that :) thank you for watching and for your kind comment!
Bravissimo !! Un grande lavoro e una grande emozione a riportare alla luce quei pezzi !
