    I’ve been following the progress of the purchase & repair of your M19 CC. I also am a fan of model 19/66 Combat Magnums. I picked up a lightly ‘used’ M19 at a show about 10 years ago. It started my affair & education of all things S&W. From revolvers to Gen 3 autos. I appreciate your knowledgeable videos. I know you’re not just a hobbyist. I would like to purchase 19 or 586 CC in the future.

    Excellent revolver H.R.!
    Can't wait for your follow-up review!!
    A smooth but slightly heavier trigger is how I do my trigger jobs on revolvers, no cutting or bending of springs, just polishing.

    Wood grips always look so much classier on a revolver, especially a blued one, but rubber Pachmayr Gripper Professionals go on all my revolvers that I actually shoot. They just feel better and let me shoot like a laser beam.

    My back-up and most common off duty carry gun is a 642 Pro series j-frame. The trigger was terrible when I bought it. I installed a Wilson Combat spring kit and shot it a lot. It’s pretty fantastic now for an-frame, and measures just under 10lbs. Never had a failure to fire with many different primers (I handload for it).

    I got one last year and haven't had any issues with it although I've only put 400-500rds through it. The tritium is somewhat pointless as it is very small and the front sight is difficult to pick up in daylight as the blade is wide compared to the rear notch. The standard orange ramp is better imo. I have VZ grips on mine and it's a neat gun.

    I started Patrol with a 6" Model 19 I bought back when I turned 18. I carried it for years on Patrol in a high ride holster. Back then, guys were moving away from clamshell holsters (dangerous...it takes two hands to reholster). For Detectives, I bought a 4" 19 and shortly thereafter a 2 1/2". Using the shorty's issue trigger, shortly afterward I went two boughts of 60 rds each with158 gr magnum ammo during a combat tournament. I ended up with two bloody trigger fingers. After that, I had a gunsmith exchange the barrels. I sold the 2 1/2" square butt for my cost and carried the 4" round butt (the smith also smoothed the serrations on the trigger and I did this to all my S&W revolvers). I added some custom grips and all was well. I used an original Roy Baker Pancake holster. I carried an FBI speed strip holder pouch on the belt and a speed loader in each coat pocket (convenient to flipping the coattail back on the draw). It still has a smooth as glass action. We went to issue 4" Model 66s and later 686s before going to Glock 22s. I never went to comps but earned my Expert with my revolvers. Oh, the memories. Thanks. Semper Fi

    I like the grips at 1:30 . I use a pair of faux Ivory scales on my Model 19 2.5" with my initials engraved and a Tyler T grip. It's been that way for more than 40 years so I probably won't change, but that style of grip, "Boot" grips, with the exposed backstrap and the filler behind the trigger guard without any extension to the length of the grip frame provide the same contour and grip. Sort of like a "built in" grip adapter.
    Nice looking revolver. Glad you got it fixed up.

    I’ve been researching information on the classic Model 19 four inch barrel and the this Model 19 Carry Comp and I ran into this video . I’m liking this one a little more than the classic model 19 , but my only concern was the small handgrips , which I see that’s an easy fix , although for the money this Comp Carry costs I just wish S&W would offer the stock rosewood grips long enough to accommodate the pinky finger like those Altamonte grips you ( which look very nice btw)

    Mr. Funk, what a great video on the best carry revolver made. I agree about the grips and like the new ones and also recommend Altamont. I also recommend TK Custom and their kit may help with the DA trigger pull. One question I have about trigger pull is if the pistol needs to be in a vise for an accurate measurement? With this revolver, I recommend Grant Cunningham's book "Defensive Revolver Fundamentals." Let's see how it does on the range and what ammo you like in the Model 19 Carry Comp.

      @hrfunk  Рік тому

      The Carry Comp has now been in 3 or 4 videos, and I’m quickly coming to think
      Of it as a “go to” wheelgun for CCW. It might be about time to give everyone an update on this one.

  • @notgiven4799
    @notgiven4799 2 роки тому +3

    Not sure what the application would be, the comp and night sights defeat each other in the dark. At 34+ oz it's double the weight of many other CCW options with less capacity. The short barrel doesn't take advantage of all the powder in the 357 cartridge causing a large mussel flash and noise especially with the comp. If you want a revolver for CCW there are many other better choices.

    • @ftdefiance1
      @ftdefiance1 2 роки тому

      I am not sold on the comp either (for different concerns) however the night sights will definitely help with the first shot and only experience will tell us about follow up shots.
      As to your comment on concealment smaller revolvers are harder to shoot and concealment falls on a spectrum. Is the Glock 19 obsolete because the Glock 26 exists? Is the Commander useless because there is an Officers model? My J frame serves for pocket carry less so for belt carry under a cover garment.

    • @notgiven4799
      @notgiven4799 2 роки тому

      @@ftdefiance1 J frames ,especially scandium framed, and other small revolvers are harder to shoot. CCW is a compromise where size and especially weight win out. For CCW the only practical reason for a small revolver over an auto would be reliability. Using your example of the Glock 19, the 43 or even the 42 does make the 19, if not obsolete, an impractical choice.

    • @ftdefiance1
      @ftdefiance1 2 роки тому +1

      @@notgiven4799 perhaps you should tell that to Glock as the last time I saw the numbers the 19.was the sales leader
      As to your suggestion that the only reason to favor revolvers was reliability I disagree..

    • @peoplehavetherights
      @peoplehavetherights 2 роки тому

      I am only recently a Glock 19 guy. Older one, Gen. 2, 8lb connector but 3.5lb trigger spring. Ends up roughly 5lbs.
      Why does it matter? Flawless reliability, feeding, extraction and ejection, and the early pistol does not use MIM striker or extractor. "Reliability."
      Now factor a six-shot "snub" and comp ported 3" .357mag round going off, versus 16 shots of 9mm 124gr +P ammo on board.
      I am not a big Glock fan. It's just a tool. And the darn thing works and is lighter, loaded, than the Carry-Comp is empty.

    Engineering wise, the new Model 19 appears to be a superior design to previous versions. However, there is no excuse for S&W not putting tritium inserts in the rear sight blade, preferably of a different color than the front insert. Nor is there any excuse for a Performance Center revolver having such a heavy DA pull right out of the box. My old custom tuned 4" Model 19 has an 8- 9 pound DA pull that is smooth as glass. The SA pull breaks between 2-3 pounds. I've found comps are more effective on longer barrels. Frankly, I'd rather have the extra inch of barrel and sight radius than the comp. I wonder if the comp creates excessive flash in the dark. I agree about the grips. I can get by with a J frame in 38 Special, but a mid-sized magnum needs full grips. This was a good review of its features.

      @@nt6351 I have a 6" 586 that is very slick. I don't know if the previous owner tweaked it or if it came that way from S&W, but it is a sweet shooter. It arrived fitted with aftermarket smooth wood fingergroove grips that are very comfortable, which was a bit of a surprise because I usually find such grips don't fit me. My Model 19 also sports a set of beautiful checkered wood fingergroove grips that fit me well. I bought them off eBay a couple of years ago (because they were so gorgeous and priced right) to replace the black rubber Pachmayr Jordan style I'd been using for decades. Both of my sets of fingergroove grips have speed loader reliefs, but as for their makers, I can't say. They appear to be no-name brands, despite the S&W emblem embedded in the eBay special. I think I got lucky with my grips, so, unless you're feeling lucky, I suggest you look for grips without grooves or else with light grooves. My recommendation would be something along the lines of my first set of aftermarket S&W grips. They were large square butt grips made by Herrett's (herrettstocks.com) and I used them to replace the skinny magna grips on an old Georgia State Patrol surplus 4" Model 28 I bought while I was still in college in the 1970s. They were relieved for speed loaders, and after I ground off the "tail" at the bottom rear, they felt great. Today they adorn my 6" Model 28. Herret (among other companies) also offers Jordan Trooper grips for folks with large hands. I don't own any and I don't know if they are cut for speed loaders. Another popular grip style was the Roper, which are still available in a variety of styles from companies such as Nill. I'm only scratching the surface of options, but the one grip style I steadfastly avoid are the oversized S&W magnum grips. While they are hand-filling, I have always found them a bit awkward and tiring to hold. Your hands may differ. Maybe some other viewers can offer a few suggestions.

    A very informative series of videos. Thanks. I've seen your S&W PC FAIL videos too. Also very informative. I bought a Model 19 CC due to, in part, to your reviews.
    Last Sunday over Memorial Day Weekend 2023. I inspected the new S&W Model 19 Carry Comp that I ordered. I canceled my order today, Monday, and got a full refund.
    The problem is that there was a very deep scratch on the cylinder running from lug-to-lug exposing the silver-colored steel under its matte black coating. I spoke to the store manager, who attributed the scratch to “normal wear and tear" and stated that a spring loaded lug catch scraped across the six lugs causing the scratch.
    The manager said he inspected four new Smith revolvers he had in stock, that all four had a similar scratch, and insinuated that is to be expected when buying a Smith and Wesson revolver. The manager said he wasn’t going to send the revolver back to his distribution center for them to send it back to S&W. Instead, he said he would put it on display for in-store purchase because, “There isn’t anything wrong with the gun.”
    Lastly, the mounting screw on the rear sight was damaged, the brown paper that the revolver was wrapped in was torn and crumpled, and the red-colored cylinder protection disc had been removed and was found loose in the case. These flaws are relatively minor, unlike the deep scratch. Still, I was surprised that a new firearm and associated accessories was presented to me in such a deplorable condition. I expect better.
    I inspected many Smith M19 CCs featured on UA-cam over the last couple of days and didn’t see such a scratch on any. I still want to buy this make and model, but in new condition, without that scratch, and with the packaging in good condition.
    Question: What are your thoughts regarding the above? Are my expectations reasonable? Are my expectations likely to be met? Or, am I just barking up the wrong tree? Sorry for being a little long winded. Thanks for your input.

      Hi Steven, thanks for watching. The "turn line" on the S&W cylinder is normal. However, it is usually very faint or invisible on a brand new revolver. It's appearance on a display model at at gunshop would not be surprising, given that the revolver in question is likely handled and cycled by perspective buyers. On the other hand, if a revolver is represented as being "new in the box"it should not be too distinct (or it should be absent altogether). I have to stress that this applies to S&W revolvers. Other brands may or may not exhibit a similar mark (depending upon their design). Regarding the sight screw, without seeing it, I can't really offer an opinion one way or the other. I hope this helps!

    My 66-8 has that new cylinder lock up and sleeved barrel design. I personally think it is better engineering. Some people may not care for the aesthetics of the muzzle end. Since mine is not a Performance Center model, it does not have the over travel screw on the trigger shoe. It does have blued hammer, trigger, and cylinder release. On the inside, other parts like the rebound block are blued, so no stoning for anything to try and smooth it out. Only firing it, dry or otherwise to smooth it out. I think my round count is still under 1000. Possibly even under 500, but I do have a lot of 357 cases that I ran through my tumbling media. The pistol takes hot 357 Magnum loads much better than my hand does! One thing I wish S&W did was keep the barrel at the traditional 3" rather than shorten it to 2.75". That's just a minor nit. I don't think it affects ballistics that much. I also installed Altamont grips on my 66-8. And I switched out the front ramp for a Dawson Precision fiber optic sight. I think you're really going to enjoy your Carry Comp.

    Howard great review. You almost have me wanting one, ALMOST! I will wait to see your 1 year update after a good quantity of ammo goes down range. Two items I find disappointing, trigger pull especially double action and the lack of a polished blueing. I understand your sentiments regarding it being a carry gun, but it didn't prohibit S&W from furnishing a really beautifully finished revolver in the 70s. I'm still toting some of those around today. Yes there is some honest holster wear and some have developed that plumb patina but just LOVE a high polish blue. I would be willing to pay extra and wait longer, if it were an option.

    Making me more and more jealous that I can't own one! I agree with you about that rear sight, though... sight setup preference ought to be an out-of-the-shop option on PC firearms. That double action, pull, however, is a bit of a letdown. Nothing some judicious polishing of the internals wouldn't shave a couple pounds off of in a hurry... but again, shouldn't be necessary on a PC gun. Personally, I'd opt for that rubber grip, mainly because I'm a bit smaller guy, with small hands and a small waistline, so it would work out well for me.

    I have large hands, so I also am not a fan of the boot grips. As far as the lock goes the only time I have ever seen any issues with them is when a friend somehow got the lock stuck in the locked position. I am not sure how she managed it, some debris got into it when she "cleaned" it and locked it for storage. I was able to get the lock open and clean out the dried gunk that was in there. A few times in the video, when you are demonstrating the DA pull, it appears that there is a little cylinder "jump" which would be when the cylinder stop is not fully clear of the cylinder notch when the hand begins to rotate the cylinder hence "jumping" into rotation. This will vary whether the trigger is pulled left handed or right handed and/or if the cylinder actually has rounds in the chamber. Just something to observe. Once again a great video.

    I'm finding choices a challenge. I'm looking for a mid-ride, OWB leather holster that covers the full length of the 3" 19 CC. I'm also interested in a shoulder version of the above. In the best case for me, I would like a fitted holster with a tension retention screw. However, I am open to one with a thumb break.
    Have you come across such a thing?
    Is it likely this configuration made for the M66 that would fit the 19 CC? I am open to minor refitting of a M66 holster for the 19 CC.

      I haven’t really explored the topic mainly because I have acquired so many good holsters over the years that work with the Carry Comp. There are probably no other revolvers in existence with more holster options than K-frame S&W’s. My advice would be to take a look at the options available from different manufacturers and decide what you think will best meet your needs. Also, don’t forget used holsters. Many times there are good used holsters that can be purchased very reasonably. In fact, you might want to try two or three different types of used holsters to see which one(s) you prefer.

    Nice to see such a tight cylinder gap; that's probably about the tightest I've seen! An 11 pound-plus double action trigger pull -- no matter how smooth -- is unacceptable in a PC revolver, IMO. I have no idea why they seem to vary so much from one example to the next. Of the 7 or 8 PC revolvers I've owned, I've had them from about the same as yours on the high end (a 327 TRR8) to an incredible, 7.5 pound pull on a 686+ PC 5". The latter revolver will be passed down to my son. The trigger pull was actually lighter and smoother (albeit longer) than my Korth Mongoose, and better than any trigger job I've ever had that didn't result in light primer strikes. Oddly, I had the same model in a 4" version, and the trigger was over 11 pounds. I haven't measured my 586 L-Comp, but I would estimate it by feel at between 9 and 9.5 pounds. As smooth as it is, I find it acceptable. Sometimes, I think, they just put in a Wolf standard strength, ribbed mainspring and call it a day. Other times, they are clearly doing much more with the action.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 роки тому +1

    Beautiful!! I was just gifted my dads old (early 70s) Model 19-5 Blued just like yours. It’s pretty beat up as my dad shot it/carried it allot!! Any advice on cleaning it and restoring it? Thank you 🙏

      I would strongly suggest not trying to do those things yourself if you're not already skilled in the process. The last I knew, S&W would still refinish and rebuild their older revolvers. As I understand it, they come back looking and functioning like new. It's not cheap (although less than a new handgun), and I'm not absolutely sure they still offer that service. Still, for your Dad's revolver, it might be worth a call to find out.
