Having lived in Asian countries for 17 years and visited Thailand multiple times, I can say that the pros FAR outweigh the cons. I'll be back over there for good in 2027 when my daughter is off to college.

Australia is turning into a smaller version of the UK, Canada and the US with all this woke garbage. The cost of living is also insane. I'm bailing later this year for Bangkok. I'm sad as Australia was an amazing place to grow up in, but the woke mind virus has ruined it.

I made my mind up on my very first visit to Thailand nearly 25 years ago that one day I will live and die in Thailand. I'm now 45 and have things in play to move over before I hit 50. Without being so negative last year was one of the worse ever financially in the UK for most people and it seems to be getting worse every year. The minute I land on Thai soil everything is much brighter and better. I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders like I've gained some superpowers lol I'm so much more happier. It’s the same in the U.S. cost of living here has become so unsustainable and there’s no work/life balance at all. 2025 I hope to have saved enough to move to Thailand ❤

The cons:
Visa - I’ve got the 10 year pensioner LTR visa so there is no going to Immigration at all
Heat & weather - I don’t mind the tropical climate. It beats the foggy chilly damp of the San Francisco Bay Area. The air quality has never really bothered me but I’m not outside running marathons either.
Traffic - I was fortunate to live near a BTS station during my 6 years in Bangkok. Now I live in the countryside with a car.
Far from home - I try to get back to the US once per year. The flip side is that people from home are reluctant to visit Thailand.
Language barrier - yes it’s there but it’s not a barrier, for me, to every day living. I get by just fine. I’m a bit of a loner and I’m relaxed enough that I don’t let much bother me.
The humidity doesn't bother you? How often did you do long walks where you are from vs in Thailand?
@@steveb7600Like anywhere you adjust your life to the circumstances. Don’t do exercise midday. Drink water. Wear the right clothes. Take showers. If it was snowing outside I would have to accommodate the cold. When I was younger I didn’t care for the heat. Now I’m OK with it.

I will be 56 in a few days and I live in France (I'm French) with my Thai wife. I traveled to Thailand 13 times between 2010 and 2019. I just want to say that the language barrier for me is the first disadvantage for someone who wants to live in Thailand. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of learning the Thai language for those who wish to live sustainably in Thailand.

Been here almost 3 years now. I agree 100 percent with your viewpoint and opinions on the pros and cons of living in Thailand. Good vlog.
00:19:15 In the West, people value "individual happiness" meanwhile in Thailand, people care more about "mutual happiness" and "mutual respect". Imagine that you have two circles representing individual rights, and there is a sharing intersection in the middle. In the West people tend to fight for that sharing area to expand their individual rights, on the contrary, doing something like that in Thailand is considered a selfish act.
Selfish freedom comes with a cost, for example in Germany, during COVID-19, it took German people several months to discuss an individual right not to wear a mask, and along that process, many elderly people died as a result. Meanwhile, in Thailand, it took like a week for people to do it to protect other people in the society.
So, the freedom in Thailand is not as extreme or selfish as in the US and also not as oppressive as in China. I think the Buddhist mentality is a very good basis to create a free and harmonious society.

This shows a lack of understanding of both systems. The USA had much more "extreme freedom" before WWI and families and communities were much stronger back then. Today we pay 50% of our money to government which has thousands of new pages of regulations added each year and doles out welfare to citizens from cradle to grave. Meanwhile families and communities are less unified than ever.
In fact economically speaking Thailand is much more "free" if you look at the proliferation of small businesses and lower barriers to entry. Or if you look at "special services" that certain ladies provide. You could also call that individual and "selfish" freedom.
And Germany, a bastion of freedom? On what planet?

I’m sitting in Manila at the airport on my way back home to the US after my first visit to Thailand watching this video and planning my return. The heat and humidity is no joke but the place is amazing. The number of Russians in Phuket is a def con. They aren’t the friendliest bunch even with each other. The food is next level for sure.
Australians hugely advantaged, move that distance from a con to a plus. Nothing is close to Aus, so being able to take a direct flight home and Thailand being only a few hours behind timezone wise, it’s perfect.
I find 3 of your cons actually being pros. I love Thailand. The people, climate and culture are awsome. I can't wait to move.

I’m 45 years old and only just got the chance to leave the U.K. and visit Thailand (and Cambodia) for 3 weeks this winter. It totally opened up my mind to the possibility of a different retirement plan for me in Thailand. I resonate with the culture and people so much! Your videos are a great help my man. 👍🏼
I’m not a big fan of city life and I know you live in Bangkok so a lot of your videos are about living in Bangkok which is fair enough… I still watch them and find them interesting as you’re a good story teller so they’re a pleasure to watch 👍🏼
One of your pro’s is the culture and the people and this is what I personally find is the best thing about Thailand… like you say, you can jump on a BTS (subway train) and not have to deal with any litter or anyone being obnoxious and this is not just on the BTS but everywhere. Yes there’s litter in places but for me it’s the level of respect for others that really gets me.
I’ve got an older brother that retired from the U.K. and now lives in Rayong with a nice little bar/restaurant next to the beach. I’m landing back in Bangkok May 7th to use my 2 weeks Summer leave up in this beautiful country and my mission is to learn what daily life will be like.
I’ll be scouting through your videos for the next 48 days (yes I am counting them down 😂) and I have to agree that learning the Thai language is a must so you may see me somewhere soon!

I am returning from USA for a Retirment R&D Trip to BKK, Jomtien and tomorrow to Hui Hin. My wife and I recently spent a week in Phuket and loved it. At 69 I would consider Thailand as a retirement spot and I will certainly watch more of your videos, and will check out Fah's online course. We too are from Toronto. Not quite retired but getting closer every day, My Son lives in Hong Kong so it would certainly be more convenient for family visits. Thanks for the video.

leaving UK in just under 42hrs, headed to Vietnam first.. then FINALLY coming to Thailand for the first time... its taken a while to sort things out, 4yrs later than I had planned but a lot of research later, modestly financially comfortable so who knows how long I will stay/last!! on the topic of Thai FOOD?? I agree with everything you say. I was in Peace Corps in Thailand in the 80’s and have been back 10 or more times. I’m planning a trip soon to explore the country and myself for a move there.
I've travlled all over the world and for me personally is Thailand the nicest country in the world, because it's culture, nature, people, food and women

It's nice for a holiday but it's pretty boring these days IMO; I much prefer Vietnamese women, and I don't mean the bar types. Thai cuisine is pretty awesome, though.
Chris - Love the run down, great points on both sides. Wife and I are looking forward to spending significant time there when it is time to retire in 5 years or so. My son is wanting to spend a couple years too with his cousins while still in is 20's once he gets done with College. Have several friends as well that are dreaming of retiring in Thailand. So in a way we are hoping to bring some of home with us to help fight off the occasional homesickness.

Liked this vlog a lot because I basically agree with everything you have said. I am now retired and just returned from 5 months in Thailand where my son lives and works in Bangkok. Planning on splitting my year between here (in summer) and there (in winter). As a single woman of a certain age I definitely appreciate the healthcare and the safety pros and can live with the cons no problem. Cheers

The cons are so worth the pros, Chris. Some don’t really register on my radar given I live in a hot, humid part of Australia. And I don’t aim to live in BKK so traffic and air quality is a lesser issue. But all the pros stand proud. Love your videos and your expertise and most importantly, your heart. Great, helpful video! Thanks! I love Thailand. I went for 2 weeks last year with my wife… Bangkok, Kanchnaburi and Ao Nang, back to Bangkok. Loved every bit of it! I returned in my own this January/February… Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, back to Bangkok. I can’t wait to go back again! I would live there if I could… although my wife struggles with the humidity. I figure head to Chaing Mai when it’s cooler, avoid burning season. I love Kanchanaburi - it’s a little more laid back. Ao Nang for the coast (still to check out Phuket and Koh Samui etc. but Krabi is fine). If it’s too hot, I’d do as you suggest and head to Vietnam or somewhere- maybe Japan.

Great video, I agree completely. One « quality of life » tip I could give to people new to Thailand is to get the Grab app for taxi and deliveries. Easy and cheap. One tiny con for Europeans used to day drinking especially on vacation 😅 is that in some places and stores they don’t serve/sell alcohol between certain hours. That’s contrasting compared to all other freedoms.
I’ve been to Thailand 3 times and going back next month. I’m excited to have enrolled in the Challenge, I’m on day 5 so still a long way to go but I love it so far. I can tell that everyone involved in making it has taken a lot of care and effort to make it a great experience. Props to the team!

Bolt is great too, and most of the time, it is cheaper. I pay $3 usd for rides here that would cost $40+ in any US city.
Love the comparison with Toronto, as I’m from there as well. “Lived” in Samui for 2 years, from 2017-2019. Now living in Muskoka (as it does give us some reminders of Samui life - water, hills, etc). What would cost us 600THB for a nice feast of Thai food for 2 in Samui now costs us 2000THB. The owners of the Thai restaurant we frequent here are from Chiang Mai (love this city), so it’s great to have a Singha and chat about both of our second homes. If we found the proper visas, we’d stay. My wife worked at Kamalaya and I stayed using Tourist Visas. Say hi to Samui immigration for me as I miss them. All was smooth sailing in my experience.

I love how you refer to Thailand as home. That speaks volumes. I’d love to try but I’m not sure that a could convince my wife. Heat, traffic and distance to family would be the big obstacles.

Chris, great video. The only con in my life is when the lovely aunty who sells patongo opposite my condo is sold out. This morning I bought 6 huge pieces for 15 baht. She always welcomes me with a a cheery sa wah dee ka, I tell her the patongo are alooi maak and we wish each other chok dee. The little things matter.

Great video.... your pro no. 5 is the top for me... living in London for 11 years now... and the "personal freedom" here is very much getting on my nerves, to say the least... people having phone calls on loud speaker anywhere, putting feet on seats in public transport, shouting, arguing and all that... and after visiting Bangkok last year, the difference is even more noticable.... I just hope I will be able to join you and other expacts in Thailand soon!

Possibly the best info video on living in Thailand. I am not there yet just one more year in London. You have helped settle my last year in the west worries. I guess you could do a little special on places to go to escape from the heat. I am thinking of places like Darjeeling in India, Nepal or even China.

I agree with you 100% Chris. My issue is my Thai wife has been living in Melbourne Australia with me for 16 years and does not want to move back to Thailand. I have convinced her into spending 3 months a year in Thailand to escape the terrible Melbourne winters.

I reckon three months a year is just about right, especially if you can get out of Thailand by early to mid January at the latest. Fresh air to breathe is first on the priority list. Of course one can visit from January through April (Southeast Asia's field burning season) to confirm for oneself that one does not want to be here during the field burning season. This season is for indoor people only, the kind of folks would do well deployed to submarines and space stations.

I have the same problem my Thai partner of 6 years has lived in Sydney for 16 years she is an Aus citizen and I can't convince her to return to Thailand (where she owns a house with her family in isan) to live so I can retire and not have to worry about running out of money in bloody expensive Oz.

As a partially disabled person I walk with a cane and have difficulty traversing obstacles such as walking up/down stairs without a railing, navigating tall curbs and other things such as uneven steps, etc. On a recent trip to Bangkok, I could see that this places limits on my ability to get around without relying on taxis - I also have difficulty climbing in tuk tuk's. In Bangkok, disabled people are an afterthought and I seldom see them out on the streets.

Hi Chris, I went to Thailand for two weeks. My Thai friend introduced me to her friend a year ago. My girlfriend and I went to several places in Thailand, and she introduced me to her family. A few I have met by video chat. Thai food is similar to Korean food. My girlfriend family was impressed with some of the basic Thai that I spoke. The people are friendly, the malls are very nice, and we went to several Buddhist temples. Hua Hin was nice. Especially, the house I booked for a few days. Overall, a great trip. I am planning my next visit. I plan to retire there soon.

This is a good one, Chris. I've decided to move to Bangkok either later this year or early next year. I've made two trips since last year and have fallen in love with Thailand as a whole. I love Jomtien too. But Bangkok is such a vibrant city. There's so much to do and see. But aside from that, I'm not happy in Australia anymore. The political situation here is so divisive now and so woke, and the cost of simply existing here is insane. There also doesn't seem to be any sign it's going to get better either. Crime here is also on the rise. Every time I visit Thailand I'm happier and healthier. I have some family here, and no doubt I will return every 6 months to see them, but everything I want in life just seems to be waiting for me in Thailand now.

Our daughter has one more year left in high school and I'm and planning to work for another few years. I'm thinking that when my daughter goes away to university, maybe my wife and I will do a month or so in Thailand a year until I do finally retire. Then maybe we'll do six months or so a year and go from there.
Thinking about somewhere where there’s a nearby beach. Not one for huge cities like Bangkok, but near a beach would be nice.

I went to Thailand for the first time in late January for a 6 week trip and find this list accurate. The biggest con was the traffic and poor sidewalks. A few civil engineers and proper design would do wonders. But while I am not as big of a fan of Bangkok as Chris is, I am more of a small town person, I absolutely loved the smaller cities in Thailand, and the Pros far outweighed the cons. I plan to return in October for another visit, and hopefully in the near future will winter in Thailand.

I recently abandoned my plans to move to Hua Hin in January.
I researched that 36000 people died in 2023 due to pollution related illnesses.
O-500 rating for air particulates were in the 70s & 80s in Hua Hin and Bangkok.
Shorter life span probabilities deterred me.

Been to Tland twice and the HEAT/HUMIDITY was BRUTAL. We have yet to go to Chiang Mai, so we may go there to check it out.
Currently we are in Xela, Guatemala at almost 8000 feet so every day the high is 70-73…..lows are 45-50. We still plan to travel to many countries in search of our favorite spot, but we sure do wish Tland had cool weather because we loved it there.
I was just in Chiang Mai Feb 1-25...before burning season.. the mornings were cool and comfortable...so were late evening.. still very warm middle oc the day but not like BKK
We will have to try CM. If it is a bit cooler and I have a swimming pool to jump into, might work.
Also going to try Dalat, Vietnam and Baguio City Philippines.

After three decades of soaking up the aloha vibes and navigating the entertainment jungle here in Hawaii, the missus and I have decided to swap our leis for Thai smiles and retire in Thailand. May I ask why you are choosing Thailand when you already live in one of the most attractive places in the world? Is it because of prices in Hawaii, or something else?
Aloha@@minifix! We're opting for retirement in Thailand for a few reasons, and let's be real, cost is definitely at the top of that list. But hey, my wife's not just any retiree - she's an avid world explorer and hiker. In fact, she's tackling Mt. Everest Base Camp this April/May! So, we're on the hunt for a place that's as adventure-friendly as she is.
Living it up in Hawaii on Oahu has been fantastic, but after over 30 years (and coming all the way from Massachusetts!), we're ready to spread our wings. Like Chris, who's been there and done that with his own business, we've never really had the chance to kick back and enjoy life. From what we've heard from pals living abroad, quality of life is where it's at. And you know what Chris says - we've only got so many trips around the sun, so why not make the most of 'em?
Between my wild ride in the music entertainment biz (yep, I'm a talent manager) and my wife's hustle in clinical research, we've been burning the candle at both ends. It's high time we hit the pause button - on everything, including where we call home.

As usual, great video, Chris!! Since you mentioned visa agencies, could you make a video about prices in those agencies(how much for new visa or a renewal or driving license etc.) I'm searching internet far and wide but the info(prices) I get is varying too much. Thanks in advance :)
Good video. For me the major con is weather, I am used to 20c and 40% humidity living on coast in Southern Cali. It will take a long time to get used to it (maybe never get used to it), but other than that Thailand is great! And it really is a major pro to be so close to all the other interesting spots in SE Asia. Traveling half way around world to visit there is tough to do, but if one is already there it turns into a huge blessing. Also I'm wondering how often Fah will do the 100day language challenge? Twice a year assuming she wants a break between sessions?

New viewer and really enjoyed the video! You mentioned several places: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui. Do you use Bangkok as a living base and spend a week or 2 at other locations? Or do you live in different cities based on the time of the year? Dave from NY.
