This is reasonable, really. I will be getting roughly 1800 US per month on social security in a few years. Even with inflation, this is totally do-able and very encouraging.
I agree. However, I would NOT drop your US Medicare coverage and pay for it, or have it subtracted from your SS. This way, you can always get back to the US and get coverage for cancer care or pre-existing conditions. Presently, it is about 144 dollars/month. Even if you purchase health insurance over-seas, it will not usually cover cancer care. Obviously, you have to get back to the US to get this care. This guy has a rather luxurious apartment. $1800 a month is more than do-able to live in Thailand. Not only are there inexpensive places in Bangkok (who says one has to live in the premiere areas of the city like Asoke), but you can also live comfortably in other cities like Chiang Mai or down south towards Hua Hinh. I have done the numbers myself and the biggest cost savings for me was no longer needing a car and saving on rental costs. My current vehicle is 14 years old and there is no way I want to buy another one with the insurance, upkeep, monthly payment, and gas required. In places like Hua Hinh, there are public 'buses' that you can ride around the city for pennies. You can even get a moped if needed. And what I pay now for renting a one bedroom studio apartment in California is close to your 1800 budget!!! So do realize that you are giving yourself a lot of wiggle room in Thailand by simply eliminating things you need in the U.S., that you do not need in Thailand! I think one of the big problems with determining a retirement budget in Thailand, is the misinformation spread by some people. These people will claim that you will be absolutely miserable in Thailand if you don't have at least $5000 USD per month to live on (some will say even more). That is absolutely insane. What these people fail to realize is that the majority of us want to move to Thailand primarily because it is a LOWER cost of living compared to our home countries. We are not, I repeat, NOT, desiring to replicate the same budget and lifestyle in a foreign country. We don't have a need to hit the bars and clubs every night, buy a fancing sports car, and wine and dine at the fanciest five star restaurants.
This was great! Hes brother spend triple in Tampa, I just live south of Tampa, I definitely can retire much earlier in life instead of waiting another 10 years!!!
1400 is way more than enough. My wife and I live in a large studio apartment and pay 250 in rent and 600 in food, travel, phones, laundry, and other things. You just can't eat western food all the time or live in the main hubs but you can live close to one of the train stops which will take you anywhere
enough if you are eating only street food, not in a relationship and no bar binges,, you are living in a shoebox and you have to pay for that health insurance. Dont be a fool and not get the insurance
I was in Koh Samui for 30 days and I spend like (3K USD). I had 3 Vegan Restaurants, all in walking distance. I can't wait to go back to Lamai Beach. 🏆
Anyone’s budget will change when you have a Thai girlfriend. For me been living in Thailand for nearly four years. I probably would never have stayed in Thailand this long, I love to have a companion! So once any guy starts living in Thailand long term, you need to factor in the relationships that will be inevitable, for most guys imo! This guy is a good example of having a better life! 😊
For someone who wants to enjoy night life get in Muay Thai gym and eat healthy food majorly but always up for street food and thailand all varieties it offers ( mostly ) , how much of a monthly expense would it be? According to you ? ( also with and without a girlfriend ) thank you
@@shubbhu4563 Not an easy answer, I can only go by my own experience, my Thai partner helps in keeping costs to a minimum, we both don’t drink or go to bars, she’s a great cook to, so no expensive restaurants. She gave up her receptionist job, so we can be together and go on trips. So maybe another $300 a month extra, less if we don’t travel!
I would love to see a step by step video of how an expat goes about finding a similar apartment, what the qualifications are and the actual monetary transactions to get into an Thai apartment.
FB market place. 2 months deposit plus 1 month insurance (for future damage). Easy. If you pay 1 year or a half year outright you can have big discounts. Thai way is so different from the Western way. Less headache, less complications.

My job allows me to go work from anywhere in the world for a total of 8 weeks (2months), and I'm thinking about Thailand, because I've been there in 2019 and fell in love with the country, the food, the weather and culture.
Great episode, Chris! This interview really brings the point home that it is possible to build a lifestyle that is unique and exciting... Live the dream! I've been an expat since 17 pretty much...Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have been my hangouts... Thailand is right at the top of my list of places to retire to (tied with The Philippines)... Positive factors in both places, each has their strengths and weaknesses... End goal after Dubai, where I'm at now? Split my time between the two countries... Likely will continue the business as well, if you love what you're doing it's not a job, it's a way of life that dovetails nicely with the rest of your life... Living the dream too... Cheers! 🙏🙏🙏 👍😎👍

My downfall is spending to many years learning Spanish living in Colombia now I just want to visit Thailand and Philippines
Great to hear a healthy, down to earth budget. Some of these vlogs make out like Thailand is expensive but most don't go with the Thai flow and appreciate the little things. 5 year savings plan and wife and I are done with UK. 🎉

The only question that wasn't asked was how does Greg manage his immigration situation. What kind of visa he has that allows him to stay in Thai for a year, exiting the country and re-entering? I would appreciate that, cause I am considering spending a year in Chiang Mai... reason why I came across Chris's channel.
Sounds like he has a great lifestyle in BKK and I love the Condo and how it is right at the SkyTrain. Im a tennis player and pickle ball guy too so it’s good to know there are places to play over there for when I make the move. Always love your informative and open videos Chris. Greg is a great guy and so glad to meet someone in my similar situation doing exactly what I intend to do, perhaps in Chiang Mai or Hua Hin as opposed to BK but still very helpful. Thanks for sharing this Greg!
Hey john this is from a complete random person who bought a home in hua hin with his wife. But i can highly recommend hua hin. You have the beach nice local food and its cheap. Hua is nog too big and not too small. Only 3 hours away from BKK and it will get better when that new train station gets finished!
@@wigdocter Thank you Doc. I very much appreciate your recommendation. I am trying Hua Hin this year but have decided not to buy in Thailand but to rent instead. This will give me more flexibility as I travel and try other places as well.

I am a Brit in Bangkok and the one thing this video demonstrates is just how expensive the USA has become. Bangkok is not that cheap for Brits as even with inflation prices are still 30-40% cheaper than the USA. Its still good value especially if you eat Thai food a lot and dont drink wine or go out much. Thats where the sweet spot is IMO. However if you enjoy a nice steak dinner twice a week and go out on a Saturday night be prepared for minimum £3000PCM. A bottle of wine will be £20. A nice bottle £40. Nice western food like Italian or Greek is plentiful but comparable prices to the UK. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, most meat all more expensive than UK - other than maybe chicken. I would say my average weekly shop is around £120 here in Bangkok back home in the UK its around £75-80. Thats for good eating too. I pay not far off £1500PCM for a 60m2 condo incl utilities. I appreciate people pay less, but not everyone can live in a 28m2 studio even if it is £300 a month. So if you have got this far, and you are British, be very careful when you watch videos like this where they quote dollar prices because a £4.99 Aldi sirloin steak in Bangkok is closer to 2x the price. That same £4.99 Aldi steak in the US would be $15 so nearly 3x UK price. This is where people get confused and think its "cheap" but it all depends on what you are comparing it with! Thanks for the video btw another great one.
Chris, speaking of the content in this video, please do a video on the location and costs, etc., of pickle ball courts and gyms. Thanks. Be there in mid-February 24.
Always excellent info! I'm currently scoping out flights for the 2nd half of December-early January.. If my bonus lands (will need it with airline price$ nowadays), good chance I'll join you once or twice on your morning walk!
Clicked on this video - while enjoying my morning coffee on Soi 22 in BKK, while wearing my 'round the sun' t shirt... lol. Thanks for the informational video. We really enjoy the area On Nut on out Sukhumvit. We've been here 8 months last year, and will be here a bit over 8 months this year. Not made to jump for leasing a condo yet though... (When you going to make more of the "full color" printed "around the sun" shirts? I've had more comments on this shirt, lol.

This video was more interesting then this kind of videos usually are because it was based on a more average person. I can see myself in this man. And boy! I get inspired. I have been thinking about settling down in Hua Hin but now I’m considering Bangkok.
This guy is very disciplined. Trains hard, focuses on his health through diet and training and isn’t interested in boozing and womanizing at clubs. A lowish budget will work for this guy.
The reason I mention downsizing is because I humbled myself to a mobile home with no mortgage ( paid 26000) cash and 500 DLL property taxes. I’ll be able to keep this place for my children. If I fixed this up 2 bed 2 bath 1330 sq ft cheaply 650-800

This guy lifestyle is simple and similar to type of retirement I plan on. Not luxury apartments, shopping, hanging out in bars or high end restaurants of some other retirees shown on other Chanel’s.
Excellent Vlog Chris. Your Guest was concise and realistic living in Bangkok. Depending on your addictions/lifestyle i would say he has a good lifestyle as you probably would be living like that on a day to day basis back in your own country but more expensive.

So average UK outgoing of £1400 equates to £850 there? Thats crazy
250$ for rent in a large studio apartment where can i find something like that?
enough if you are eating only street food, not in a relationship and no bar binges,, you are living in a shoebox and you have to pay for that health insurance. Dont be a fool and not get the insurance
@mikeg3281 oh I had insurance, don't you worry.
@@winkblink8636how much is insurance?
My budget is around $1,500 to $1,800 a month, approx $300 less without a Thai partner!
Not everyone goes to buy a girlfriend.
I would love to see a step by step video of how an expat goes about finding a similar apartment, what the qualifications are and the actual monetary transactions to get into an Thai apartment.
Very easy, no requirements, just 2 months deposit. FB groups or walking into condo buildings are the easiest way
@@etywrtyjfgjTrue!
FB market place. 2 months deposit plus 1 month insurance (for future damage). Easy. If you pay 1 year or a half year outright you can have big discounts.
Thai way is so different from the Western way. Less headache, less complications.
Plenty of videos detailing this on UA-cam including this channel. Find a listing, contact the agent, look at the unit, and go from there.
Chris really enjoyed the video and what a lovely life he lives on 50 000 Thai baht per month Punawini station I have looked at this place and seems a great retirement destination thanks for the video he is so open
My job allows me to go work from anywhere in the world for a total of 8 weeks (2months), and I'm thinking about Thailand, because I've been there in 2019 and fell in love with the country, the food, the weather and culture.
Food weather culture? What about the girls? 😂
@this.is.berlin haha I didn't wanna take a guess with the lady boys and all
whats your work ?
Cheers!

Just started watching your videos and absolutely love them. I'm coming to Thailand in Jan/Feb to explore the options for early retirement. You are a great coach and inspiration....thank you for the great videos!!!
Paul,
Me too
January 8th to Feb 3rd
Coming from Los Angeles!
That's a wholesome guy right there! Really like this type of budget in Thailand ''in the life of ___'' format, looking forward to more!!
Miss it so much already. Just got back to the US from a 3 week trip in Thailand.
Pack the bag and come again friend Haha 😁
How much did you spent in those 3 weeks?
I’m thinking about booking a flight to Bangkok or more of the outer parts . I don’t speak the language my question is do you speak or understand the basic language because I get around great in the Philippines speaking English. My downfall is spending to many years learning Spanish living in Colombia now I just want to visit Thailand and Philippines
By the way Chris, I think it’s great that you help people around you promote and grow, job well done!!
Great to hear a healthy, down to earth budget. Some of these vlogs make out like Thailand is expensive but most don't go with the Thai flow and appreciate the little things. 5 year savings plan and wife and I are done with UK. 🎉
Here's the pricing calculator for Health Insurance I mentioned in the video: bit.ly/3Ss8z8S
Just found your channel! It is sooo inspiring! Me and my husband live in MICHIGAN currently but we don’t have kids and we are saving up our retirement fund so we can retire early. I’m from the Philippines originally but I didn’t know how beautiful it is in Bangkok! Thanks for doing this video!!!! I’d love to experience living there one day.
For Thai people, approximately $450 is considered OK, but if it's comfortable, it's about $600.
This is so perfect!! This life style and budget fits me personally like a glove! Wow!!
Another Belter, Thanks Chris, I’m packing up and selling as I type.. This has really put things into perspective for me.cheers jock
My goals are to really reduce my cost of living . Lifestyle creep is real . Thanks for the great video .
Excellent video, Greg is a really nice guy and gave a very honest and insightful account of his experiences in BKK. Interesting look at a very reasonably priced lifestyle, enjoy your time in BKK Greg. Great work Chris
Glad you enjoyed it!
AMAZING Video...My wife needs to see this! 20+ years ago for our 20th Anniversary we spent a month traveling (shopping) in Thailand and she LOVED Thailand and Thai people...and especially, the food. Thanks!
Another awesome informative video!! Would really really love to see you do some videos with single women who have made the switch to the Thailand life. In particular, women who are retired, close to retirement living a similar lifestyle as the man in this video. Once again, thx so much for all your information sharing.
Same! I'd also like to see videos from a single woman's perspective!!
I will retire in July after 20 years in the army at 37 and will check out Bangkok for sure seems like a great option when you have that pension income.
Wow! What an inspiring video. We’re quitting our jobs in June 2024 and considering a gap year after watching this video.
Do it. You will find that other doors will magically open. A leap of faith begins exciting things....
Awesome. It was an honor to be your featured guest for the episode in Koh Samui. Greg is my brother's name. Look forward to watching this one! 👏
Another great video Chris, Greg seems like a really nice guy, very kind of him to share his experience, thank you both.
Hey Chris, another great video of yours, thanks. As a fellow Canadian in Love with Thailand "A" I just want to say a BIG THANKS or MERCI! As I'm from Montreal. I discovered your 2 channels a couple of weeks ago and I find them of tremendous help in so, so many ways, you cover a great deal of subjects. Very Useful. I'll be going back to Thailand, Laos, come Feb 2024, for 3 months and planning on exploring what the feeling of an expat is like, both in Luang Prabang where and Chiang Mai... Questions will most certainly follow, but for the time being just wanted to thank you. Merci! Marcel
hope u enjoy in my country a lot brother :)
Around the end of Feb...the beginning of scorching Summer, please note that the weather here will be opposite to Canada.
Thanks Greg! It was a pleasure to meet you a few months ago in Bangkok. ❤
If you are retirees, there are many condo along mass transit out skirt of Bangkok, much lower price, you still can come to city in 30-40 minutes. Wow, 10000-step idea is great!
within 20 minutes of downtown by metro, you will find THOUSANDS of apartment complexes that rent for around 70 to 200 dollars a month.
I cant believe this guy is pushing 60! I thought mid 40s. Well done sir
maybe for white people. lmao

I'm making plans to comeback to Bangkok in Feburary. I hope to run into you in the future and give you my take on spending $ in Thailand as an Army Veteran!
Hey yo, I’m looking for a U.S. military veteran. Would you be available for a collab?
Great, informative interview, Greg is very articulate and seems like a genuinely nice guy. Well in lads! 😊
Thanks for this. When I come to Bangkok to visit for a couple of months I will be sure to contact Adam.
For comparison purposes only... I live very comfortably in Siem Reap, Cambodia the past year for a bit under $1,000 per month. While Bangkok offers modernity, Cambodia has a slower, friendly pace.
Thanks again!
Thanks Chris for another interesting video and the more I watch your videos, the more I wish I could just pack-up and spend time in Thailand. Keep-up the good work.
your videos are the best because are one of the few which are actually informative, most videos of digital nomad channels are "pretty but useless"
Great video! His entire monthly expenses are less than just my rent in Seattle. I'm planning on moving to Bangkok in a few years, so these videos are great. Thanks for the content!
Great interview with Greg, Chris! He could do his own UA-cam channel. His on camera presence is excellent!
Love your channel Chris! Positive vibes all around. Your videos are really helpful in planning a trip to Bangkok
Wonderful and very realistic overview of possible living costs for a really great lifestyle.
I work in Tampa and thinking about retiring and moving to Thailand next year. Hey Greg from a fellow floridian. Great video.
This is my first month moving in Thailand. I’m in the same apartment building next to Punnawithi BTS. I was at the Yellow Roof yesterday. So imagine my smile when searching for health insurance info I see it’s happening right on my doorstep. 😂
Great video. Thanks to you both.
We’re from Tampa, too! We were just there staying in the Chidlom area last week so we need to check this area out next time!
I got to film at Music Concept in Central World (there are some amazing metal guitarists in Bangkok!!)
Oh, I think my wife saw you from a distance when we were at Benchakitti Park a week or so ago!
Dude we cannot wait to go back!!! (Planing to move there in the next few years)
this was an excellent vlog.......so detailed that guy has a good life style on his budget......
His place looks a bit like mine 49sqm in northern bkk. I’m 30 mins from centre on BTS. I pay 10,000b
Tampa COL is spot on. I'm in St Pete and 1 Bed/bath here goes for $2K+
Such a great video. Thanks for sharing 🙌🏻 I’m really considering making the move from the UK in January and your videos are tipping my decision in favour of going
by far best youtube channel , traveling informations everything ,
The only question that wasn't asked was how does Greg manage his immigration situation. What kind of visa he has that allows him to stay in Thai for a year, exiting the country and re-entering? I would appreciate that, cause I am considering spending a year in Chiang Mai... reason why I came across Chris's channel.
probably illegal stuff going on
Getting an education visa from a local school is one of the easiest ways
@dieselek3938 As far as I learned, education visa is a single entry, not multiple. You can't travel abroad on education visa.
Another question is about dating. Guess he doesn’t. It becomes an additional half extra of what you are currently spending.
Great video Chris, lot of helpful information. He still did not say the cost of his health insurance. Unless I missed it.
He speaks briefly towards the end of this video.
He says ...
Health insurance can be $40 usd. I have safety wing and in Chiang Mai
I like your content very much I am proud in my country because I am Thai people I love my Thailand❤❤❤
Sounds like he has a great lifestyle in BKK and I love the Condo and how it is right at the SkyTrain. Im a tennis player and pickle ball guy too so it’s good to know there are places to play over there for when I make the move. My meals in Bangkok the last few weeks were about 36 Baht including drink at Terminal 21 Food Court. I went there so much they got tired of seeing me. Great Vid and great Guest Chris !
We have watched quite a few of your videos and get a lot of info from you. Thank you. We will come to Bangkok in March 24 and stay 2 or 3 months, until the end of Smokey Season in Chang Mai. Planning on retiring in Chang mai but take a holiday every year to escape Smokey Season. Woul d love to keep in cantact. Peter and Tia Stephen
Can't beat Air Asia for great service and equally nice equipment. Prices are the bomb.
1:17 When he said “u feel like home in BKK”, then, queue the SKY TRAIN coming!! Perfect timing for the vote of confidence from the Universe.😂❤🇹🇭
Yep, that’s what’s up! And so true on the cost of living.
Good camera work, nice put together. And straight to the point. Thank you for your great video!
If you want to do as lower budget, I would go to Pattaya or Chang Mai , you can easily do 1400$ USD a month
Good for him Florida's Man I myself was born in Bangkok lived there 20 years left to America
Now 55 years is still very hard for trying to live cheap every thing is skyrocket the foods prices are very high and my husband still works part-time I myself retired 7 years ago both of us are retired it is still hard to afford to travel. After I heard about traveling to Thailand.
Hi just saw your interview with Greg, coming for initial trip to Thailand in order to move in September.
I’d love to see if you have a video on couple costs and interviews from Canadians!
This video was more interesting then this kind of videos usually are because it was based on a more average person. I can see myself in this man. And boy! I get inspired. I have been thinking about settling down in Hua Hin but now I’m considering Bangkok.
In him? Whoa
Cool sensible guy, for a lot of people living frugally like this is not possible.
Quality of life in general is so much higher than in Europe, that is why we travel to Thailand ❤
Hi Chris, thanks for sharing. I enjoy these videos where you get a feel for what it costs and what it is like to live in Thailand.
This guy is very disciplined. Trains hard, focuses on his health through diet and training and isn’t interested in boozing and womanizing at clubs. A lowish budget will work for this guy.
Hi Chris, just saw this and gotta say, Great vid mate. VERY inspiring!!
Beautiful place and surrounding. Great place and affordable budget. Restaurant and activity area look very clean. Awesome.
Love this video! Hopefully more of these with different monthly budgets on the horizon!
He seems to be a very balanced man....good for him!

Greetings from Tampa. Luckily I got a house back before prices rose and my expenses are less than most (my small mortgage is my only debt) but it still doesn’t compare to Southeast Asian cost of living. Great video 👍
Beautiful place , I love Bangkok ,

Great video…. The wife and I live in Asia a LOT! Once you live learn how cheap the rest of the world can be, it’s really hard to justify living back in the USA. Live life! While your trips around the sun are still happening. ❤
Great vid and very informative ........ I guess it all comes down to what type of lifestyle you want to live when living there , you either choose to spend a lot or you can just budget things wisely and you can still live an enjoyable lifestyle
