Metals are cast into shapes by melting them into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mold, and removing the mold material or casting after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed is aluminium.

    I would guess it's a bit risky to cut into a gas cylinder which might have some residual gas in it? What if the cutting makes a spark? It would be better to unscrew the valve and fill the cylinder with water then empty it before cutting.

      This is a helium cylinder, often sold for balloons. Lower pressure, non flammable.

      It's actually an r-22 tank for refrigerant used in cars (I'm a mechanic and see them all the time, personally I wouldn't use one as they're much thinner than a regular propane tank but I guess that could add to the light-weight factor) it's pretty inert and nothing to worry about catching on fire

      If you remove the valve and leave it a few hours it vents on it's own
      People turn these into little stoves for camping the same way.

      charcoal actually works very good for such things. The temperature its supposed to reach at maximum (somtimes written on the package) is false. If its supposed to reach around 700 Degrees C, you can still easily melt brass with it.

      I can't wait for your next video. I have received 3x canisters from a friend. I am going to build my furnace tomorrow!! i don't know how i am going to sleep tonight! I also like the way the furnace can be changed to propane without real effort. Though i am going to stick to coal as i am only melting Aluminium. Question: How long does the plaster of paris take to set?
      And being nosy........ I am curious to see your faces....... Just throwing it out there!!

      We use plaster of paris coz it is pretty easy to get and it gets dry very fast so everyone can make this at home and you are right it does not last more then 5 burns...... And insulated kaowool or furnace bricks are better to use....

      How'd yours go? Would love to hear any tips / findings!!
      I built 2 forges (saw a better way to do it when 90% done w/ the 1st, so now I can do my idea of a hot-form-box made of gypsum/cement to see if it casts cleaner/better than regular greensand) Sadly neither got hot enough to melt alum., I didn't seal-off things well enough and the air-intake wasn't aiming anywhere near optimal, I've got propane and a prop/bute mix but going to head out there and give it another try w/ just air-induction before using the gas!

      What is harmful for eyes is UV radiation from welding. However, if you watch a movie of someone welding, the camera doesn't pick the UV and you TV/computer screen doesn't emit UV. So, it's safe to watch on TV/computer screen someone welding and it's safe to film someone welding as long as the cameraman doesn't look directly at the welding.

    • @Grizzydan
      @Grizzydan 6 років тому +5

      Yep plaster of paris is dirt cheap and you don't have to replace it until it crumbles off completely.

    • @Sharpless2
      @Sharpless2 6 років тому

      You cant use charcoal when using kale wool. Youll have to use gas for that... Charcoal is more fun to melt metals with and its not as loud as a gas torch is even with the blower on. Also, you dont even have todo what he did in the video with the plaster of paris... the empty gas tank is completely enough and it will work just fine.

    • @RandomHands
      @RandomHands  6 років тому +2

      Yeah you can melt "copper" in this way. But copper(1000oC-1100oC) has more melting point than aluminium(600oC-700oC), So you need to change setup a little bit. You need to make insulation more better to melt copper.

    • @Grizzydan

    • @RandomHands
      @RandomHands  6 років тому +1

      Propane is better than charcoal and oil in two ways : Propane burner is easy to use and have no any residue and secondly it is smoke less. The main problem with oil burners is the smoke which contains carbon monoxide and carcinogens that can cause serious health problems if the area is not ventilated well. But if the area is well ventilated and you are not allergic to smoke then oil burner is best. Thanks Big Dan for your opinion and guidance....

    Before u cutting any empty gas cylinder, you must fill up with water inside of gas cylinder to make sure no gas residual.

    • @brianadams1907
      @brianadams1907 6 років тому +5

      The best way to cut a cylinder is run an exhaust pipe from a gas engine (carbon monoxide gas) into the vessel to be cut. The C O will displace the air and NO possibility of ignition will exist.

    • @RandomHands
      @RandomHands  6 років тому +3

      Yes you are right. For safety, We should fill cylinder with water.
      Thank you for your suggestion.

      Here we use chlorofluorocarbon's cylinder and chlorofluorocarbon is non-flammable.

      i was too safe. i washed out with boiling water the let an air compressor pump air in for 30 mins . gas gets into the metal so remove valve first.

      yes, but only in very large doses. I welded many pipes together today without any ventilation indoors and it didnt harm me in any way. I used both Mig (without gas) and arc welders. Haha i also burned my hand because im to lazy to actually use safety lol.
