Have you been so focused on your regular day-to-day that you’ve forgotten what you want out of life? A few years back we were in the same place...maybe worse. We’re Chris and Melissa. We ditched the suburban house to travel, pursue our dreams and embrace midlife. We’re sharing our nomadic journey in hopes of inspiring yours. Be sure to take a moment and subscribe to keep up with our #slowtravel adventure. We typically upload videos every Friday.
There is an information board with markings where the train car is located on the platform, so you can avoid unnecessary running.🙂😉
Too bad we didn't know this until now. :D
@@chrisplusmelissa No need to run anyway as in the Finnish trains you can always walk through all the cars to your place. A bit uncomfortable with a lot of luggage but better than missing the train.
they work only in Helsinki Central because car carriers!
You are an entertaining couple. Good videos.
Thank you! Glad you liked them.
Love the video, excited for you to come back in the winter! :)
Welcome to here during winter. It’s actually magical experience.
Much longer and colder winter than here. A homestead there would be quite a challenge.
Santa lives in Korvatunturi. In Rovaniemi just have Santas Park... =)
Please go to Lapland during the winter, it's magical! It was really nice to watch your video 😊
Thank you. :) We hope to do that for sure.
@@chrisplusmelissa Only around -44°C today. You'd love it! ;)
Far better in winter time
This was lovely. Melissa looks so excited about all the little things. It always amazes me when people find the "midnight sun" (that we don't even have here in the south) so amazing. I hope you used the blackout curtains though.
Can't wait for the next episode!
It's almost done! :)
Melissa's so cute!
She sure is. ( says Chris )
Rovaniemi is the Santa Town but the town has a bit gloomy history. You won't find any really old buildings there, It was burned down in WW2 by the Germans troops as revenge, like they did in most of the northern Finland. I had family living up there at the time, they had to escape across the border to Sweden.
We heard about this when researching. Quite sad indeed.
Santa is not from Rovaniemi as he is not from the North Pole either. He is from Korvatunturi. I understand that it is almost impossible for anyone to visit and there's nothing much to see but that's how it is.
@@Wekotin yes.
Finnish train announcement's are allways given at three language, finnish, swedish and english. You fool us little at that 😎
You two are like the Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus in a making. I definitely felt the Christmas magic. A Finnish Christmas song seems appropriate: "Katri Helena - Joulumaa (1978)".
The Christmas Land is not just a snowy fell
The Christmas Land is the peaceful state of mind
And the trip there won't take that long
If everyone has the Christmas Land in their hearts
Ha! Thank you! And thank you for sharing Joulumaa and for translating some of it. I just gave it a listen and it sure sounds like a bit of Christmas magic :-)
That looks awesome, put it on the retirement bucket list. You guys rock!!! Stay safe.
It was sure fun. We will stay as safe as possible.
Chris reminds me of Mark Hamill
So happy to see you both in my hometown! 😎🙏
If you can please visit Tallinn the capital of Estonia on the south side of the gulf of finland. There's many daily ferries between Helsinki and Tallinn. Tallinn has a wonderful medieval town in the middle of tje city that is to die for. Gorgeaus city. Good eating too.
In Finland you don't really have to worry about things like getting to your destination from airports, ferries or train stations, they are packed with busses and taxis.
You are in Finland?? You traded Portugal for Finland? Traitors!
😅😅😅
Just pullling your legs, guys. Have lots of fun there. From whst i have only seen in photos, Finland is a gorgeaus country, especially the countryside with the woods and lakes.
Have a wonderful time, guys. Safe travels.
September in finland is kinda just the start of winter, real cold and snow starts at around end of january
Enjoy
Canadians have that Santa lives at the North Pole - in Canada; he even has his own postal code: H0H OHO. I've been to the world's most northern settlement (Alert, Nunavut), and the plumbers, and carpenters there literally work in "Santa's Workshop." According to the sign outside!
We figured there might be some other places that claim Santa. 😂
Santa's main post office is right there in that village 😉.
Nice video and I'm happy that you have had a good time in my home country. I'm almost 55 y.o. Finn and never travelled in a sleeping wagon in a train because I usually do the homeland travel by my RV. Now I'm waiting for the next episode!
Thank you. We are almost done with the next one... and after that, I think we have 2 more Finn-powered videos! We super loved Finland.
Instead of VR you chose the RV
The banter cracked me up, "Will Ferrell in Elf", "Kept my screams on the inside"
Hey. Nice to see a video of your launch when you visited my hometown. I live 10 km and 15 minutes away from Santa Claus Village and Napapiiri and from time to time I go there to watch you tourists. Your other videos are also pleasant and I have subscribed to your channel.
HI! Thank you for joining our adventures. You live in a very beautiful area that reminded us much of Minnesota, where we're from. I suspect it gets a bit colder, but probably very similar to what we used to experience in the winter time. 😊
@@chrisplusmelissa Hello again, Chris and Melissa. Yes, I believe so the weather and climate are similar there. After all, there are a lot of Finnish people living there, which was certainly influenced by the fact that the climate is so similar.
Only time for a short comment.....Ho Ho Ho!
Traveling by train IS better than airplane.
Agreed.
You can adjust the temperature of the shower, so you don't have to take a cold shower. 🥶
We figured there was a way... next time we'll get it right! 🤣
Did you see that the doorhandle to the restaurant car had six fingers?
We did not realize this.
@@chrisplusmelissa it's a bit of a troll from the designer from the late 80's
@@Skege1000 Arto Kukkasniemen pikku jekku
@@Skege1000 I've heard that it was a trick for to get strangers to talk. It's an easy opening line: "Have you noticed that there are six fingers on that doorhandle hand?" :)
OH MY GOD! I love Santa... not really, I just made that up. But he's okay. :)
🤣 He is real... we saw him with our own eyes... we'll have proof in the next video.
@@chrisplusmelissa Oh boy, I may have to eat my words.
😃
11:10 the conductor announces that the train will arrive to Rovaniemi on track one and the platform will be on --- side (the clip wos cut right before she said the side). It's kind of unfortunate that while most announcements made by conductors follow the same patterns, they usually don't make the announcements in english or swedish. There should be automatic announcements about 3-5 minutes before arriving to station in finnish, swedish and english though. Those should contain the minimum required information, including information about connections if they are available.
At this time of the year you get better chances of finding Santa in one of the beach's in Portugal 😂😂😂
🤣
8:11 Did you notice the number of fingers shown on that doorhandle? Don't know why, but it has always been like that on those dining car doors
:D ty u for making my day a bit better
We have been living in warm Portugal and it's made us wimpy, that's why we have the coats on. :)
in the bus, did you notice that you could pay by card in the bus?
We could and did. :)
Did you notice that the hand in train 8:11 has 6 fingers?
I just got a 40 minute ad in the middle of watching this! UA-cam is taking the piss!
Whoa! That's long. I think the ads will keep going until you click on "Skip Ad" Was there not an option?
@@chrisplusmelissa Yes I skipped it but still, do they really expect people to sit through a 40 minute ad?
Welcome to Finland Chris and Melissa! I hope you'll enjoy the trip. If you have a little bit time in Helsinki after visiting Santa Clause's place, give me a message. Would be fun to meet you guys.
Thank you so much! Often times, videos come out at least a week after we "film" them. So we were already back in Portugal by the time this video hit. Thank you for the kind gesture. Your country is very beautiful.
It's not santas express the "VR" just helps to get the Christmas presents to every kid and person
8:12 Did you notice? The hand has six fingers!
We did not until people pointed it out. 😄
you 2 are always having fun .
We try. 😊
Do you still have your shoes on when you sleep under the covers in bed?
No. We tend to always take our shoes off. 😁
@@chrisplusmelissa In American movies, stars wear shoes in bed, everyone! It is good to take them off indoors in clean countries.
I don't recommend December in Rovaniemi. All the prices are +20%-+40% and hotel rooms are +100%-+200%.
3:40 "look at you you're like a little kid!" -proceeds to spank her-
All jokes, very cool and fun video :D
Bumped into this randomly. A nice post and great characters. Melissa is nuts.
Rovaniemi is for santa and for kids and idiots.
Visit Helstinky, one of the greatest cities in Erp.
Going to Rovanniemi in the summer is like parachuting without a parachute. It's bearable for about 2-3 weeks in Southern Finland of the year and that's the time you decide to go to Lapland! 🤣
Santa needs love in the summer too! 🤣
My family is coming from close of that Santa's original home. That's called korvatunturi (mount ear) because it's looks like ear. There can visit by walk or on skis in winter .. long trip😅 middle of that small mountain is Russian border. Up there is small cabin and nice views.
