  • This is another video in my series “ Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Hannington which is located 12 miles to the South of Newbury and 8 miles to the North West of Basingstoke in North Hampshire.
I park my car by the village green and start my 5 mile circular walk with a quick look at the church & the pub before having a wander through the main street, admiring some quite beautiful thatched cottages & houses along the way.
My route takes me Northwards out into the countryside past Hannington Scrubs & over an old Roman Road before descending into a valley & climbing the other side to a ridge. From there I get to enjoy some stunning views over towards the Thames Valley.
I then head Westwards along the top of Freemantle Park Down (with views of Andrew Balding's horseracing stables down below) to Cottington's Hill where I start to head South & then Westwards again through the old bank of an ancient deer park. The footpath takes me along the side of open fields with great views of Cannon Heath Down & Watership Down in the distance.
I then join up with the Wayfarers Walk (a long distance path) and climb up towards Walkeridge Farm and then back to the village.
I was filming at the end of October and initially the sky was very cloudy - which meant the camera footage did appear dark at times. However the sun eventually came out and it turned into a lovely bright Autumnal day.
It was fairly windy - especially at the top of the ridges - and so there was some “wind noise” on the audio which was difficult to avoid and I had to tuck my microphone under my jacket - hence what might appear to be a “muffled” sound. I hope that this does not spoil your viewing of the video.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

Hi Dave , we did this walk today (28/10), the weather was beautiful sunshine all the way until we got back to the car, so we were very lucky. I think this has to be one of my favourite 'Dave' walks. The views all around were stunning all the way up, and from the top by the radio tower the panorama was spectacular. The dogs loved all the open space and we hardly saw another soul out there. A super walk we will be sure to do again. Thank you.

Glad that you had a lovely walk there Elizabeth. It was a windy day, with a fair bit of cloud, when Logan & I walked around there but the views were still amazing.

Thank you for another great video. Good views over what appear to be very big fields. Congratulations to Logan, a well trained obedient dog is something to be proud of. Thanks again

Thanks Colin. Logan is a good lad - it is not always straight forward trying to teach a Whippet to do obedience!

Stunning scenery and that old cottage in village was amazing. Also good to see the Roman road. I visited the property the Vyne you mentioned on a coach trip once a time ago and remember driving on the coach through pretty countryside to get there. Well done for all the doggy achievements too!

Thanks Jean. You certainly get some super views from the top of the ridge. I must check out The Vyne sometime.

Ah! Hannington. Where much of Andover receive the tv pictures from.
My youngest sister used to live there with her first husband at a farm, virtually underneath the transmitter. In fact, they reckoned that if the transmitter was to fall, it would just be short of reaching their house. I never really knew the village, as we seemed to arrive at the farm first.
Anyway, enough of my nonsense. Great walk and well done to Logan for getting to Crufts. Also to Fiver who seems to have grown a lot since we saw him last.

Thanks Lionel. It is certainly a "big" transmitter up on top there, for sure!

A lovely walk Dave. That countryside looks very similar to our old world on the Wilts/Hants border.

Thanks Mark. Yes, I agree - it is very similar.
