WALKS IN DORSET at SWANAGE & DURLSTON HEAD (THE JURASSIC COAST) [4K]

  • This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the town of Swanage which is located 5 miles to the South of Poole in Dorset.
I park my car at the Broad Road car park in the town and start my 4.5 mile circular walk with an exploration along the beach & sea front. After checking out the Prince Albert Memorial & Gardens, I head for the beach where there is another memorial - this time to a sea battle in AD 877!
Logan had some “Whippet Zoomies” on the sand before we headed Eastwards along the quay, which still has evidence of an old tramway that was used in the quarry industry. Passing the pier, we head along to the Wellington Clock Tower and the Lifeboat Station before climbing up on to Peveril Point where we enjoy some spectacular views over to Old Harry Rocks on the other side of the bay.
Our route then takes us South, through the Durlston Nature Reserve to Durlston Head where we get to explore the “castle” and magnificent “globe”. Continuing Westwards along the South Coast Path, we pass by the “Tilly Whim” quarry / caves and the “Dolphin Hut” to the lighthouse at Anvil Point.
Here we head North, through the Nature Reserve, and back to Swanage where we continue our exploration - looking at St Mary's church, the mill pond, the Town Hall & the “lock up”!
We finish back on the stone pier at Swanage where we get to eat our sausage & chips!
    Map courtesy of Google Maps.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

A beautiful walk - I enjoyed it greatly but it brought back very mixed memories for me - boarding school at Hillcrest school in 1948 was perhaps the most miserable year of my life. It was like being in prison in the midst of all the wonderful things you showed. Walking over the crest of that hill, in a crocodile of course, to go to that church on Sunday and seeing the bay you couldn't go to is one of my many painful memories. Thanks for my nostalgia fest!.

I remember going on a school trip to the Tilly Whim Caves. It must have been 1969 or 1970, as I was at Branksome Heath school at the time.
It's a shame they're now closed due to H&S. Kids these days would love 'em!

There was a post on the "Swanage Matters" Facebook page this week "looks like the rangers at Durlston Castle are working on the steps leading to the Tilly Whim Caves and installing a handrail. When they have finished we will not be able to enter the caves but we should be able to walk down to the entrance and back again". I also read that the work to clear nearly 50 years of land slip and growth has been and is being carried out by volunteers. I believe the aim is to allow access to the mouth of the cave entrance initially, any further access would be subject to safety and wildlife impact assessments.

Would you recommend someone moving there if they couldn't drive?

Is it too isolated a place for someone who can't drive or is it unsafer than other areas?

Thank you. I only have a Canon Powershot SX530 for "still photos" which is basically a simple "point & shoot" camera but it does have a good zoom although on "far away" shots, the image becomes a little blurred. It was a great spot for watching them though - I could have stood there for ages!

    • @SkylarkFields
      @SkylarkFields 2 роки тому +1

@@DaveFord I know what you mean. I had the Powershot SX60 before my current camera and it had the same problem at full zoom. But to actually spot the peregrine, and get a record shot before it flew off, was a great achievement! (My hubby and I once went to Durlston so I could photograph peregrines but not one showed up! We obviously need to go again!) Already looking forward to your next video.

I love Swanage and you brought back some very nostalgic memories for me though I have never ventured right down to Peveril point. I have walked the swcp in it's entirety twice and was 70 miles in from Minehead in 2019 for my third transit when covid stopped my adventuring. I am now too nervous to travel far on public transport though I did manage a visit to Swanage for a long weekend in Sept 2020. It was lovely to see Logan enjoying his run on the beach! Thanks for a bittersweet video with beautiful scenes of all the places I love so much and used to enjoy visiting. The history was super interesting too and a lot I did not know.

I found this very interesting Dave. Those bits of old Swanage with the pond and the "recycled" items from London, were absolutely fascinating. Jackie has already commented I see, but next time we're in Swanage (we like to go there for a Wimpy), I will ask her nicely if we can go see the railway tracks on the seafront. The old part may be a bit too far, but we use the number 40 bus so I think that passes near some of the things. Always good to see a different viewpoint. We learn from each other. Hope to see you again soon.

Well done Dave. Great video of an area I know well, although it’s a number of years since I’ve actually visited. Even traveled all the way by train back In the pre Beeching days. I’ve never taken the coastal path though. That was interesting especially the tower which was brought down from London. Apart from the missing clocks, it looks as if it should have one or two bell at the top.
The Great Globe is a favourite of mine and I have been into the Tilly Whim caves a couple of times before they were closed to the public. What are those rectangular holes in the rock face? Caves?
You have picked the most beautiful day once again. I don’t know how you manage that every time?
Walking back down through the trees towards the town on a warm summers day, still holds glorious memories for me, with the scent of the pine needles under foot. I even spotted a red squirrel on one occasion.

    • @DaveFord

    Great video as usual!
In the late 60s I was lucky enough to go go on a school visit to the caves !
Don’t know if you used to watch Some Mothers Do Have em, but they filmed a scene just past Anvil Point with Michael Crawford hanging over the edge of the cliff attached to a Morris Minor. The episode is on UA-cam!
I started my building career at Burt and Vick. Mr Burt was the son I think of the one you talk about . Went on to build many a Purbeck Stone fireplace when they were popular in the 70s!
All the best , Alan and Michelle and dogs !
