WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE AT NEW ALRESFORD

  • This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I undertake a 4.5 mile circular route at New Alresford (a town located about 7 miles North East of Winchester). I follow a walk published in a book called “Hampshire & The New Forest - a dog walkers guide” by Vicky Fletcher. (I should point out that although the guide indicates that the walk is 4.5 miles, it may well be over 5 miles!).
    I start my walk at the Alresford railway station (part of the heritage Watercress line) and make my way through the pretty town via an unusual public toilet (!), the church, the stunning Broad Street (possibly the prettiest street in Hampshire?) & the town mill to join a riverside walk.
    My route takes me along the River Alre, passing a memorial garden, a stunning fulling mill, an Eel house & a vine plantation before I head North up an old drovers track to a high ridge on Wayfairers Way.
    I then head East to Abbotstone, the location of an abandoned medieval village before walking back in to the town via some commercial watercress beds.
    The weather was perfect for this late Spring / early Summer walk - glorious sunshine & a perfect temperature.

    I just did this walk an hour or so ago. Still a bit damp because at the end coming back to the mill I jumped in the clear fresh fast flowing water. Can you blame me on such a hot day hitting 30. Beautiful little walk with a lot of leaf cover from the glaring sun. Probably one to do when there are less leaves about and cooler for those unobstructed stunning views I was thinking, so will do it again sometime when I won't feel the urge to take the mill plunge. Sorry about that ducks and trout. 🦆

    Arlesford. Another place that is just beyond my known world, ( "here be dragons?!!)...a lovely walk. My parents house in the 70's was called "Millcress"....I guess this was only about 20 miles east of us.

    Just a really wonderful & amazing walk Dave! Alresford is just such a lovely little town. Loved the train station, the main street of the town, the mill, the cottages...all of them were & had some wonderful old buildings!😍 Pretty little stream.

      Thank you. I hope to go back some time and do a walk that takes in Old Alresford - I took some pictures of the Church (on a hill) from a distance.

    A great video, beautiful countryside, lovely clear stream, whippet zoomies and an interesting toilet fact!
    Ps. Seems to be some text missing from your write up...'although the guide indicates that the walk is 4.5 mi' 😊

    Lovely video Dave. I know Alresford very well, having lived in the area in the 60s. I’ve walk past the Fulling Mill and the eel traps. It’s truly a remarkable spot alongside the river. At the time I lived at Itchen Stoke and working on the farm , would drive or tractors up through Abbotstone, heading for Northington Grange, which was owned by the same company. Thanks for the history of the hamlet of Abbotstone and the watercress beds also, which reminds me. I haven’t eaten watercress for many a year.

      Thanks Lionel. I think that was one of my favourite walks of the series. Do look out for my video walk from Ovington, which takes me through Itchen Stoke - it comes out in a couple of weeks time.

    I love these videos - what’s the music you use?

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 роки тому

      Thanks Paul. All the music is from the UA-cam Audio Library which is free. I often use "Firefly" by Chris Haugen (I think it is on UA-cam as well). I also often use "Rainy Sundays" & "Lovely Afternoon Walk" by The 126ers.
