this worked on my 2016 Chevy Silverado w 137k miles. Thanks!! Had repair shop chasing the P0446 code and gas tank fill. Repair shop replaced the canister vent valve solenoid valve & hoses in and out, but still couldn't fill gas tank without gas pump clicking off every 2 seconds. I got UA-cam smart thanks to High Octane & banged on the charcoal canister & hit it with compressed air repeatedly. Tank fills with no problem & no P0446 code anymore. Thanks!!
Thanks for posting this. You saved me some money. 2005 Chevy Express 185,000 miles and I recently was on a dirt road, next time to fuel, pump shuts off and takes 5 minutes for 30 gallons. Thanks again High Octane.
@baronoflivonia. I have a 2005 Chevy Express 1500. It has 260,000 miles on it now. Just recently the engine started running rough. The code showed it was an EVAP issue. I can fill my gas tank normally but was wondering if you had the 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 of your van before you had the problem with fill your tank.
THIS WORKS!!! i have a 2002 chevy s-10 zr2 and i took off the vent canister, beat it with the side of a hammer while blowing air through it. Works great now. Just wish i had tried this before i paid for a purge solenoid. Thanks for the video.
Glad you chimed in on this. Friend's GMC has the round style and a missing purge valve. (Deleted by previous owner we think, after a TBI was changed and has no nipple for this evap system). Anyway, i will have her give this a try and chime back here with the results.
I have the same fuel filling problems, also getting the Check Engine code P0446. This is extremely frustrating! I replaced the vapor canister vent valve/solenoid after watching a video that said that should have fixed the problem. It didn't fix the problem. My next move is to do exactly what you did in this video, since my truck has driven down many dirt roads in its lifetime. Thank you for posting this video, I think it's going to save me a good amount of money.....and sanity.
@@dickcruzj Yes it worked perfectly! I purchased a brand new one from rockauto, took maybe 30 minutes to replace it. Completely solved the problem, and the error code never came back after I cleared it. Funny thing, the new one felt like it weighed about 2 pounds less than the old one. These things gather a lot of dirt over time.
The guy who maintains the pumps at Coop was there one day when I was filling up. He was worried about what this is doing to the pumps! He said I have heard of this happening but never seen it. Since then people have been coming out of the woodwork with the same issues. I just feel bad that when my Dad bought the 05 Chevy Silverado within a year it started clogging up. After watching this video, I decided to replace the charcoal canister on my 2011 Sierra with a new one. This solved the problem of the slow fuel filling instantly. I ordered it from rockauto, took me about 30 minutes to swap out, completely worth it.

The filter hood is press fit w tabs, so easy to access. There are 2 sponges which clog up w dirt. Just pry out and wash. Reverse for assembly. Only mess w the charcoal filter if this fails to fix issue.
Excellent video right here bub. Just purchased an avalanche on the way home I tried to fill it up. Same symptoms. Gonna have a Crack at your method! Cheers!
Thanks for the video, it confirms what I thought my problem was on my 2005 Tahoe. One thing I feel I need to call you on is that at beginning of the video you said the EPA in its great wisdom.... in a sarcastic tone. Why is that? Do you not like clean air, just because something is not perfect or sometimes fails should not mean that we should not strive for an ideal outcome, me personally I will always err on the side of the environment. Take care and thanks again.
EVAP system simply makes the gas burn before going into the air via the exhaust system, instead of evaporating it out the filler cap. Either way the fuel you put in your tank eventually goes in your air. This is just a bunch of complicated (and sometimes expensive) stuff to make you feel better about how those vapors exit the car. If someone WANTS to pay more for that then that is fine. But the problem is when the EPA FORCES us to have this on all cars now. You didn't get to weigh out how much difference this really effects air quality, and you didn't get to see exactly how much extra it adds to the sales price. Instead the EPA told us what to do. How'd you like them to tell you that you can no longer drive your 2005 Tahoe because its a heavy V8 that gets horrible mpg and that you should strive for an ideal environmentally friendly car instead?
Michael Katt you say this because millions in other countries like China to mention one, care as much as you do and this makes how much of difference? I'll never understand you're type lol
Ryan Leslie, I am not sure what you are trying to say. Are you saying we should have high air pollution because countries like China have high air pollution? This is not rocket science or even alternate facts, China and other under develop countries have poor air and water quality, it is a very checkable fact, the US has relatively clear air and water but this was not always the case, do your remember the 70s and acid rain, we are doing much better today
The EPA is like a fresh college degree graduate trying to tell me how to do my job that I've had experience doing for 10+ years, when they have no idea they are just using ideas from a handbook. This system here bypassed would probably make the truck get 40mpg but that good old OPEC wouldn't like that one bit
Gonna try this today! I have been dealing with this issues for 3 yrs now! I have changed the vent canister and the purge (under the hood) and it helped but last week the engine light came back on. I just want it fixed so i dnt have to spend another winter standing out in the cold for 20 to 30 min to fill. My only worry is getting the clips off but i hope i figure it out without breaking them.
Damn good advice man. I already installed the purge valve solenoid last weekend and still have the ultra slow fuel up issue. I'm hoping either blowing my evap canister out or replacement will fix it. Thanks for this awesome advice. I also like how you relocated that breather in your other video. Good job and thank you.
My fuel tank pressure sensor failed and it was the first time in 4 years I had to reset the engine computer after I replaced the sensor. After that the Evap system would not go to 'Ready' to smog it. I drove it over 1500 miles - no check engine lights but didn't go to ready either. As a last resort I cleaned the charcoal canister and it reset two days later. The computer must be looking for different pressures and a plugged canister won't hit it. Thanks for making the video.
good video. The vent valve where that dirty side hose goes, is another thing to clean out. I have cleaned dozens of them, some with half a cup of fine dirt in them. I just worked on one where they relocated the vent valve to up under the hood where there should be way less dust, using a length of heater hose. If there is an electrical wire it will have to be lengthened too. I have an 07 monte carlo coming in with the same problem. Usually get an OBD code like P0440 to P0449 and check engine light.
I've had this problem for the last two years, shop wanted to charge me 403.00 to fix it. Just couldn't pay that so I've just dealt with this annoying problem. Got under the truck today and did this along with changing the vapor canister vent solenoid. Even though I didn't need to fill up, I went straight to the gas station. O yes she filled up with no issues. No more trying to find the sweet spot where the pumped won't shut off. Thanks for your help.

My problem is a little different but related. Among other problems I've been solving, I have a vacuum leak, I have replaced almost everything on my 04 Tahoe and still have a vacuum leak. I made a smoker to check the lines. A friend said he cut the vent line ends to the canister and used a threaded airhose fitting and a rubber hose and clamps. Also replaced the purge solenoid hose with hose and clamps. This is on the 2 large vent lines for the canister.

no they should not, usually there is a foam pad inside that might be falling apart allowing them to fall out. You may have to get new one or shake all the pellets out and call it good.
Does that canister isssue generates problems when you go to the gas station and fill up the tank the nozzle keeps shutting down?... did you get that problem in that truck? did it get fixed? or that truck just had the typical error code for the EVAP system?
So if that canister is plug up will it cause the gas smell coming from the back I don't see any leaks but I do I have a gas smell can ming from the back
Not designed for gravel roads yet every truck advertisement I have ever seen has been on this rugged outback road and yet these little boxes can't even handle a little dirt. False advertising?
It appears that it would be possible to remove the lines & blow out the dirt without taking the unit down from under the truck. In the case of my rusty 05 Silverado, the bolts holding the unit in place were so rusty, they would probably break off.
Thank you sir that's really help but have a question can I drive without the charcoal canister to the gas station and fill my car's tank after I take it out of the car ?? Just to make sure it's the problem?? Thank you
When I blow through the big whole from the tank, air only comes out of the small hole. Think this is my issue? My truck belonged to an excavation company that was probably on dusty/muddy jobsites every day.
Would this cause a check engine light and also the tighten fuel cap message? I'm having the slow fill up problem to so I thought they might be related.

It appears that it would be possible to remove the lines & blow out the dirt without taking the unit down from under the truck. In the case of my rusty 05 Silverado, the bolts holding the unit in place were so rusty, they would probably break off.
Great video
Will this also work on a 2008 Nissan Titan? Same problem. I might try it sometime.
yes
Thank you sir that's really help but have a question can I drive without the charcoal canister to the gas station and fill my car's tank after I take it out of the car ?? Just to make sure it's the problem?? Thank you
mhmd mego
I would not recommend it, might have excess vapors under and around the vehicle could cause a fire if it found an ignition source
i just replaced my evap canister and still filling slow.
I’m gonna try the solenoid next and if that doesn’t work…blow out the lines
Evap canister and solenoid did nothing. Any suggestions?
"easy to take off" GOOOOOOOD you showing how then...
See my other video on the clips
you can use a water hose too
I did do that in another video that I have
How strong of compressed air should I blow into Fuel hole? How many PSI?? Thanks
When I blow through the big whole from the tank, air only comes out of the small hole. Think this is my issue? My truck belonged to an excavation company that was probably on dusty/muddy jobsites every day.
I just undid the vent line going to that and it stopped my problem without have to check the whole damn thing off
a new one is 100$, just get one and be done with it if ur gona go through all the trouble getting that thing out
I believe every car or truck has different price range, if you can get one for $100 then yeah replace it
Thank u bud
No problem
Would this cause a check engine light and also the tighten fuel cap message? I'm having the slow fill up problem to so I thought they might be related.
Do you have to completely remove the canister? Would it be possible to unhook the hoses and blow it out while it's still mounted under the truck?
04 trailblazer, but this pretty much seems to sum up my issue
after you blow it out, when you shake the canister does it have a sound of loose material [carbon] flowing inside?
Skippy Trent Sure does, sound like loose carbon. get lots of dust out
Thank you ..good video!
Hi can I use just a regular air dust canister since I don't have a air compressor
It might work, I just started to clean them like this and relocate the vent! See this vid Taking Apart Charcoal Canister And Vent Relocation On 2012 Chevy Silverado Truck ua-cam.com/video/ASCLntCU0jQ/v-deo.html
Will that being plugged cause gas to leak around it?
I would say you may be overfilling the tank, when it’s full and clicks off don’t try topping it off.. look for cracks or bad lines to it
No they will tell you need a new gas tank and just clean your wallet for you🤬What happened to honest mechanics🤔I know a few but the dealers are full of crooks🤬
💯
No if I break off the connectors then I’m cutting it to the rubber hose and using hose clamps
