  • Singing Blacksmith Bryan Dale Headley instructs on forging a hook. This step-by-step video is forging a shepherd’s hook. He also sings his original song, a tribute to American’s Veterans called The Veteran.
Bryan starts with a long steel rod and hammers a point on one end. He then pulls the other end to make a fishtail end to create a scroll end.. He explains the different colors the steel turns as it heats up as well as why one heats to the different temperatures. He then uses the cone anvil to create the large sweeping hook. Finally, he adds a decorative twist to the base. Bryan shows us that forging a scroll is quite a simple project for a beginner blacksmith.
Bryan then sings us a heartfelt song he wrote called The Veteran. He accompanies himself on the guitar. This tribute to Veterans is inspired by his friendship with a WWII Veteran and blacksmithing mentor as well as all those who have served our country in the military.
Blacksmithing techniques learned in this detailed video:
    Forging a point
    Forging a fishtale
    Forging with a ring anvil
    Forging with a bench anvil
    Forging a decorative twist
Hammering on a wooden block with a wooden hammer

First off, I want to thank you for a great video. I literally haven't heated nor hit hot metal yet but I will. Need to save a bit more money. Second, as a Navy Veteran, not some WWII Hero, but I did serve from 2001-2010. USS Theodore Roosevelt was home from 2005-2010. Two deployments in support of OIF and then OEF. I'm hoping someone reads this comment and let's me know that close air support from the Navy helped them. Got to rambling. THANK YOU FOR THAT SONG! BEAUTIFUL! I was typing before it was over. I have to go see how to purchase it. God Bless Y'all and God Bless the USA!

Hello! This video is super informative, thank you for teaching. I have been wanting to forge a shepherd book for a while now and this will help tremendously. I’m having a problem finding steel long enough... do you have any suggestions on where to purchase?

Try searching online for steel suppliers in your area and / or local scrap and recycling centers. Thanks for your comment and best wishes with your forging!
