Blacksmithing - Forging a cone hardy and some hooks

- In this video I make a cone hardy tool for the anvil. It can be used in many projects where you bend or tweak a round shape. The anvil horn is hardly ever completely round so this is a good complement. It also makes it easy to see what you are doing since it is upright, perpendicular to the anvil face.

Very seldom do i repost on a video but i was really touched by seeing you teach your son to blacksmith. I am beginning to teach my granddaughter she is 7 and she truly loves to use the tools and its so rewarding to see her so happy just doing what pap does. Thanks for passing your love onto your son it really is a great thing. Takecare and keep you all safe.

I have spent 35 years as a mechanical fitter which has been a satisfying career, however I have always wished that I had become a blacksmith. Too late for me now but I can still take pleasure and admire the excellent work you and others do. Function and form beautiful combined.
It's never too late :)
Get a small propane furnace, two-three hammers, a handful of files and use a piece of train rail as your first anvil. With that alone you can craft all sorts of useful and/or beautiful little knickknacks. My buddy made himself a Thor's Hammer neckless with nothing but a small blowtorch, an ordinary hammer and a Dremmel tool. The "bar stock" was a random 4" nail and the anvil was a granite cobblestone.
I love your channel and it was so nice to see your son learning from dad. I owned a construction business and a always tried to have my sons work with me as often as possible. Passing down skills and knowledge to your children is part of a fathers job. Thanks!

@@pjamestx It reminds me of fixing our car with my dad when i was his age :) Now i'm fixing WAAAY bigger machines than a car. It's really wonderful to learn things with dad :)
But he will need his own sets of tongs I guess.
Everytime i see a video like this one, where you get your kids involved in helping you out. It warms my heart.
I missed out on alot of this kinda thing growing up...I would have loved to have my Dad do these things with me. Teaching me and giving me experiance and support.

I have grown to appreciate your craftsmanship and was pleased watching John Switzer demonstrating his craft. Great job, congratulations. I remember when I was passing the forge as a child when I was going to school. A beautiful brick building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a roof for horses waiting to be shoed. . It is true that back then (in the 1980s) the forge was hardly working anymore, but sometimes the door was open and seeing the interior and equipment it excited my imagination. When watching your films, I sometimes come back to those memories. Best regards from Poland.

Ah dude. So much to love in one video. First of all it's always wonderful for me to watch a blacksmith make blacksmith tools, so very satisfying. Then, what an awesome shoutout to Jon Switzer and Black Bear Forge, that makes me so happy, he's just marvellous. Then to see your young chap doing such a good job too is profoundly pleasing. When I woke up this morning, I had to face a whole bunch of work I wasn't very happy about doing, but I checked in on UA-cam, and saw, "Aha! A new Torbjörn video. Terrific video, I'm surprised that you haven't made a swage to make the cone. My father started me in woodworking by having me sit on the boards he was hand sawing. Nothing better than helping your parents as a small child.
I was contemplating making a taper die for the hammer, but decided to skip that for this one.

I made my first hook in the metalwork shop at school, it's still on the back of our kitchen door, that was 67 years ago! Your son, obviously, will follow in your footsteps.

Another awesome video it was great to see you teaching your son, he is learning from a fine man and craftsman, he too will have the same skills as you do someday, also noticed that he is left handed like me, I had a math teacher tell me one day that many great men were left handed.
Even in the "demo" hook piece, you went for beauty, symmetry, perfection. Just so wonderful, Torbjorn! Also lovely to see the kid learning from you.
Half expected you also to whip out a set of new blades you forged on your own for the grass cutter.
