- Step by step installation process of progressive fork springs (from Progressive Suspension) and replacement of the rear shock absorber spring (from www.topgunmotorcycles.com) on my 2012 Kawasaki KLR 650.
Wish I could give your video 50 thumbs up. In about 30 secs of your video, you showed me everything I needed to know.Wwhat bolts to remove, and what they looked like. ( I wondered if top bolt had a nut. It does not!)
In other videos the guys spend video time filming themselves looking around their shop for ?? whatever! Block the view of what they are working on with their elbows, etc.
You showed everything great. Good video.

I think you put your front springs in backwards

My bike is quite new, fork seals are in perfect condition - nothing leaked out yet, and I made sure to drip-drain most of the oil residing on the old springs so there was no need to add more oil. I left the oil at the exact same level and everything works like a charm. Normally if you are changing oil the manual asks for 500mL (total). I hope you will like this mode as I do.

Hi! Thanks for asking. I wanted the length of the new spacer+progressive spring to match the summarized length of my stock spacer+stock springs (which by the way was only ~500 miles old), this is how I came up with 3.5'. If I were to use 3’ spacer the fork cap would screw in without any backpressure from the progressive spring (with maximally extended fork). If you are planning on re-using your old spacers you have enough of material to make 2 sets of spacers, you can try for yourself. Good luck

great idea but I think you should have just replaced the rear shock with a new longer travel one. I'm looking for a used KLR to tear apair & build with KX front forks & rear shock then work on getting rid of some of that weight.

Hi! The 6.6kg workes like a charm! When I am riding solo I set the preload to 2-3; when solo with (heavy) luggage or with passenger only I adjust the preload to 5. It is a great improvement over the stock spring - I've never hit the bottom. If you are looking to ride with passenger and extra luggage definitely take the 8.0kg - I have a second shock with 8.0kg spring installed for such ocasions.

One other question regarding compressing the spring. Do you think using two ratchet straps would be enough to compress and release the spring or do i need the metal clamp type?

There is no way you will be able to use the ratchet straps to compress the spring - unless you have something super-heave duty - but i still doubt it is possible. I tried that before I used the spring compressors and destroyed one pair of ratchets. It is better to get very cheap ratcheting straps. Compress the spring only as much as it is needed to put everything back together, and when it comes the time to release the spring slowly cut the straps.
I wonder what the stock rear spring load rating is?
I ordered my front springs and rear spring. 7.4kg. Hope it's a good choice for the rear? I'm 190, passenger is 150lbs and I have 3 aluminum cases.
You happy with the 3.5" spacer length or should I add or subtract from your 3.5" measurement. I'll take your word for it... let me know please.

If you are planning on riding a vast amount of time with passenger and extra luggage you should get the 8.0kg spring - the front progressive springs will be fine for sure. The increased weight (passenger + rear luggage) will mostly affect the rear suspension of your KLR - be very cautious during the acceleration as it will be extremely easy to lift the front. You should also consider steel braided brake lines - this is the best safety improvement for KLR (if you decide to do this mod - buy HEL from ebay - not Galfer - the quality of the product is much better). Ride Safe!!!

Do you Change the fork oil at all during the process on the fronts?
nope... the bike was almost new at that time - there was no need to change, nor adjust the level of oil
I recommend hydraulic oil
Fork oil is a hydraulic oil type, the stock being 10weight, going to 15weight with help heavier riders.
