I bought a KLR650 in 1988, $3100. The front sprocket retaining thing was the weakest part on the bike and replaced it twice. I wish I had never sold it.
I also envy mechanically inclined riders who can do their own maintenance and repair. In this age of iPhonies, those who can do, should be respected.

Much respect. Most "rebuilds" from larger companies means they strip down a $2500 bike, and slap $25,000 worth of new stuff on it... but not F9, he replaced the necessary and reused the rest just like the rest of us peons would do in real life. Where we have no sponsors and a $1 is still a $1. Well done!

I was going to comment that if you strip a bike you could powder coat and or paint. But now reading this comment i will not, you are right i was wrong. I have and old bike and us mortals dont have money to burn...great video and keeping it real!
I did enjoy the asthetic of the old parts, except for the piston. It's so much work to get to the piston, just change it while you're there. No one is going to go, "well la-de-da, aren't we the fancy one with our new piston". No loss of street cred.

I love how Ryan is just using a very basic set of tools to put this thing together, improvising where he needs to. That plywood wrench thing he used for the clutch pack cracked me up. Nice to see him showing that you don't need an elaborate workshop to fix a bike. Excellent work!!!

What was that plywood for? I have no idea about motorcycles.
@@varveyok533 there is a bolt in that piece that needs to be tightened but it's secured on a piece that rotates itself. So if you were to try and tighten it without holding it in place you'd rotate the piece behind and not the bolt itself, the plywood piece was made to hold that piece in place
Don't even need that much - I've used a regular strap for that before. Wrap it around the hub a few times and hook the other end to the frame right behind the case. Works a treat! I love this bike.
I feel completely inept. This dude and his compadre are insanely talented.
this is quite literally not a display of talent, but experience and skill learned by repetition and trial and error. I myself was not born a mechanic, it took 10 years to get on a level where i can confidently say i know what i am doing, and these guys display the same result of countless hours of learning.
It always looks daunting from the outside, once you get in there it's feels easier

One would also hope they cranked the shit out of it with ignition off to get oil pressure too...
@@theonewithin609 I agree it had been fired at least once. The time inbetween turning on the petcock and firing it up was to short. Carb couldn't fill that fast. I've rebuilt motors that fired right up and ran fine .If its a fresh rebuild there's nothing in the combustion chamber to blow out. Especially if you crank it over first to get oil pressure.

Yeah those are the kind of things you learn by doing. Like adjusting the valves on a tenere with a hacksawed IKEA screw, or reheating/annealing a copper washer over a gas stove by the side of the road.
He should do a video on ghetto repairs. They're some of my best stories and memories.

I've been riding since I was 18, I'm 68 now, I've owned 8 motorcycles and I'm about to purchase my 9th. I've rebuilt several engines in my life and the feeling of success and satisfaction you get when you first start it up and it RUNS is a feeling you never forget! You've got a great Channel, I've been watching you for years and I'm happy to see your subscribers have grown, you deserve it. The bike I'm about to buy is a new 2022 Harley Fat Boy 114. I'm excited like a kid at Christmas, the day I'm no longer able to ride motorcycles will come and I'm guessing it will also be the day I die. I have so many fine memories of riding motorcycles, the great trips I've taken all by myself out into the country like a cowboy and his horse exploring the country, that's how I've often viewed my bike, a horse to carry me to new adventures. Ride safe Ryan.

Nothing worse than a fault in your wiring loom. Nearly turned me into a schizophrenic! *stop talking to me whilst I'm writing a comment, I mean it.
Every mechanics nightmare. I used to troubleshoot electrical problem in my old bike, a cb100, even though i'm neither a professional mechanic nor an electrician. So i know how frustrating it is to do it yourself.
Now, with my new bike, i'm doing all the electrical modification my self to make sure i know which wire goes where. It makes troubleshooting a lot easier.
When ever problem issue with the wiring harness i be like : “ oh shit, how many centuries been through”
Honestly, I like wiring. But I'm an electronics person before I'm an engine person. Electronics just make more sense to me.
My headlight kept going of then I'd move of wire and it would come back on now it doesn't come on at all that's enough to cause me palpitations

When I first started seeing this channel I thiught Ryan was just some witty kid that they pulled off the street to do the videos. After seeing videos likw this I can see that this guy is a hardcore motorcycle dude. Not many men out there who have ridden the amount of bikes or know nearly as much or have even attempted a project like this.

Thank you for this video I'm 16 and I have a klr 250 and this video gave me the confidence to tear the moter apart and find the problem
Tip for putting on gloves easier. It’s better to just shake them out if you need to open them, not blow into them. When you blow into them, you’re putting the moisture from your breath into the glove, which then makes the rubber grip your skin more. So blowing into the glove may open the glove up, but in the end it’ll be harder to put on.

Complete Motorcycle Build in 15 Minutes - Ryaned but a point is missing. I think you spent so much efforts into making this great video, and then not taking the low hanging fruit. What would be perfect is to make comments about how these parts are working not just what group they belong to, and giving tips on what skill level each of these stages require. The reason why I write this is because how many times do you see a professional completely disassemble a bike? I think I could have learned so much if there were comments included. But as all videos made by the F9 team, it was great!

I can't remember why I clicked on something here. i rode dirt bikes before switching to mountain biking. Besides having a world class voice and being Canadian I thought the narrator was pretentous but also remarkably insightful and illuminating each topic with humor and even intrigue. Hopefully you cover treehugger stuff. I want a green bike that isnt a plugin. I never thought I would get back into moto but this channel has made think either a scooter or enduro is just an intelligent option over a car for town or beach runs. Gas prices. Parking/traffic avoidance. FREEDOM! But mostly joy. I dont need the exhaust I want an electic bike with 30 mile range with a board rack. Taking suggestions.

I genuinely am a big fan of the hard work and ingenuity of his content! This video by all standards could have been just this year! As others have mentioned you keeping this project with the setup and budget you’ve worked makes it something every rider can relate to ! I see the comment regularly that this is the best Motorcycle related content on YT but after nearly exhausting your library I am convinced you have the best "Do-It-Yourself" content on the Inter-Web! I watch everything from Auto-Centric to Xylophone Repair (couldn't come up with a valid "Z") and Race/All Terrain/Off Road/4X4 to DIY of every topic and I do not see the consistent high quality and creative thoughtfulness of F9. Nobody, Nowhere, Knowhow. I will shut up now and start at the top. Thanks for the great Videos and for sharing your talents.

TBH most parts will only fit in one place so even if you can't remember exactly how it goes, trial and error usually works just fine.

Honestly, if you have the right tools and a good workshop manual you can do it. You just need patience, and take your time to double-check what you're doing.
A KLR is great to learn on! Quite simple bikes. Cheap and available parts. If you do run into trouble, someone should be able to help for some beers and a laugh.
