Great video 👍 When I make 100% olive oil soaps, I add rosemary oleoresin and citric acid, which are natural preservatives and prevent rancidity (unfortunately, pure olive oil soaps get rancid, with time). Anyway, my favorite recipe for body soap, which is also a base for most all my body soaps, is made with 75% olive, 20% coconut and 5% castor oil. It needs no preservatives, because castor and coconut oil don't get rancid, so the soap doesn't, and increase lather a lot; soap makers know that lather has nothing to do with the quality of a soap, anyway it's pleasurable, so it's fine to add it. I tried also 95% olive and 5% castor oils, and still the soap didn't get rancid with time; anyway, I liked it less than the previous one, it felt a little bit less delicate on the skin, and less hydrating too. Still a good quality soap, anyway.
Hi Dott. Lupus, almond oils also get rancid, right? And what is the recipe (percentages) for your coconut wit olive oil soap? (It will my first attempt to make soap) I have 200ml of coconut denatured, but it are solid at room temperature, can use with one liter of olive oil (~15% coconut oil) with lavander oleoresin? (for this quantities, how much lye (solid 98%) have to use? ) I have dry and sensitive skin and I wash my hands many times a day.. And what about the colorants types can be used to get some colorful stripes/spots like in the swirled soap's?
Sometimes a good Castile soap is what is called for. A wonderful bar. Perfect, simple and luxurious all at the same time. Love the cute little owl mold too.
Thank you so much, Renee! I have really been surprised at how much I love the single oil olive and shea butter soaps. And so simple to make! Thank you for watching and, as always, your kind, thoughtful comments!
Thank you so much for your video. I have bern researching and watching videos all week on this. Your soap looked lovely and thanks for showing the lather tests! It helped me a lot!
I've been using pure beef tallow soap made with tap water for the past few months. Even less lather than your castile soap, but it cleans well and is gentle on skin. My second ever soap batch is currently curing, and is also all tallow, but has distilled water and sodium citrate so I'm hopeful it'll lather better.
Excited every time I see you post! You always make the yummiest creations! I was thinking I wanted to make an olive oil soap. Classic. Excited! That owl mold is adorable.
I’ve made Castile soap before too. I’m actually using a bar that’s aged two years. I find Castile to be more cleansing and stripping than other bars I’ve made. My skin is all about the moisture! As a side note, who are the three thumbs down?? I don’t get that at all. Your videos are so beautiful, Holly, and the music you accompany them with is so soothing. If they don’t like soap making, why are they watching??
Thank you so much! I think these single oil soaps (like olive and shea butter) really do get so much better with age. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
Thank you so much, Rita! I’m so glad you started making soap. It’s so much fun and so addicting. I never seem to stop thinking about soap making. Haha. 😊
Very nice soap, as I like with a lot of simplicity! I would just like to know the percentage of essential oils according to the weight of olive oil, and also to know if you have mixed the essential oils with the white clay before adding them to the soap? If so, is it effective to fix the scent of soap and especially citrus that tend to evaporate quickly? Thank you in advance for your clarifications and congratulations for the video, a real pleasure to see you every time 😊
The clay was mixed in with the essential oils. Some say it helps fix the scent. I can't really say that for sure, but I do it mainly for ease of incorporating the clay. Dry clay just takes longer to blend. To calculate your usage rates, I recommend using eocalc.com. For this blend, I used a 3% usage rate.
You're an amazing soapmaker. I love to watch your all videos but I also want to learn some more organic soaps as you share coconut soap and olive soap.

Or do we have to count their lye water extra ? (Just a silly question but I am confused about what happens to those essential oils do they stay same ?)
What percentage can you superfat castile soap with no additives but lye solution and get a good bar? Could you use the same recipe for a 50/50 olive/coconut soap?

Slippery elm bark also prevents rancidity in oils
I find that here in England coconut oil goes rancid quite fast in a humid environment.
