The District 189 building use to house a great Sears & Roebuck store. I remember going there every other Saturday with my dad. Then, just past it a little ways, you can see the old ESL library. Oh, how I loved that place - spent a lot of time there on Saturdays, too. Good memories. It was a fantastic city. Unfortunately, there was no 'tax base' and the city became under-funded which led to businesses moving out. But, there are still very vibrant & well-kept neighborhoods (just not on the main 'drags'.)
My father and his family lived at 2511 Hebert. St.louis from 1903-1962. My grandparents were immigrants from Poland and had 5 kids in the USA. Came to America in 1902. Does anyone know what it was like then? It’s all condemned buildings now.
This is the first video I’ve seen of E.St.L. Where there’s people around. Also noticed street-lights out and Stop signs on the streetlight posts. The last time I was there, it was a very busy crowded area and I don’t remember any vacant lots -not too many boarded up places either. It was dangerous, but so were many other places ( North Side/Welston/......). Interesting how things have changed.
I left East St 4/80 moved to Cali my last address was 622 N 62 St I lived further down state street. I would love to buy some of those vacant lands but it's too far. I lived in Detroit in the good old days in 1966 got out alive there too. Now I'm leaving Cali for Las Vegas I enjoyed the best of the last 12 years time to move on! Thanks for sharing State Street
3:00 Like the police can provide any protection to the public when you're not even safe going through that war zone known as East St. Louis with a military convoy! Not even if they let you ride in the tank!
It's a damn shame our own ppl allow our hoods to become like this not just East St louis everymajor city in tha US.We accept the savage mentality on how some of us live we got to do better
+Gladys Turner He was driving so fast in case someone tried to attack him with an AK-47 or even a roadside bomb! East St. Louis is a war zone populated by cop killers, serial killers, gang bangers, yes, even a few possible domestic terrorists. You're practically safer taking a midnight stroll through Detroit's Packard Plant than you are taking a midday drive through East St. Louis aka Little Baghdad!
STOP TRYING TO BUY ASS AND DRUGS. THAT'S THE ONLY WAY A GUN WAS PULLED ON YOU. THE CRIMES THERE ARE MOSTLY PERSONAL AND OUTSIDER COLLATERAL INVOLVES OUTSIDER TRYING TO SCORE SEX OR DRUGS, WHICH ONE WERE YOU AFTER?
@HardRainAtNight lol....Actuallly they just called in the military and federal officers to try and control east st louis. They have basically declared it a war zone.
@clay10h Why is peoples scary, I know East Saint Lious bad, but if don't fucks with no one you ain't got to be worried. I'm from West Side Chicago, some parts of West Side Chicago look like East Saint Lious, but East Saint Lious, got another lever of uglyness to it. Like Detriot.
I'm thinking that at the point where you inserted "prime real estate" could have been between Veronica Ave. and 13th St. or thereabouts. Hauss Chevrolet's car lot, Hull Hardware, and then came McCoy's Tavern on that stretch. McCoy's tavern was on the east corner of 13th & State. The Warlords threw a hand grenade in McCoys tavern. Yeah, that's how you keep white business and people in the city.
District 189 use to be Sears I use to go play with the toys and trains every Christmas from 67-72
All the videos of ghetto cities had one common thread- liquor stores everywhere- people getting drunk to forget their misery

Sad to go to East Saint Louis nothing left
The voters are 100% democrat. The democrats in St. Clair county sure don't help things in ESL. Thank you for watching.
Love these videos, you filmed this in 2010, it is now 2017, have you been back there since to see if there has been any changes ?
Man, you make me want some fried rice / a shrimp St. Paul......lol....I gotta get home for a visit soon!
@clay10h Thanks. It's not so bad, especially during the day. At night is a different story.

Basically make sure we don't offend the ones who destroyed our city. Nice!!!
Thomas Allen
@Futurewrath- Thanks for watching, and for your "crude" comment. Made me laugh. Best wishes.
Starts out southbound on 25th St from St Clair Ave
I agree. There is a lack of pride with some people. There is trash everywhere and not many people seem to care.

My dad grew up on 14th and State. I went to first grade at St. Patricks. We moved in 1969 when buildings started getting blown up lol.
Why were they getting blown up?
Thanks for the ride, I guess. Sad...
I was born at St. Mary's. Sadly it is closed now. Best wishes to you.

Gary, Indiana isn't even that bad. East Saint Louis is literally a war zone.
WHAT WAR?
Does anyone know Green Eyes from E St Louis? I need to get in touch with him.
I live on the south side of st.louis. It's not so bad. You just gotta keep to yourself and go to a private school.
AT THE 1:44 MARK JUST BEFORE THEY CROSS THE TRACKS, YOU CAN SEE MY OLD HOUSE BEHIND THE PROJECTS....1935 OHIO AVE!!!!
3:00 Like the police can provide any protection to the public when you're not even safe going through that war zone known as East St. Louis with a military convoy! Not even if they let you ride in the tank!
@BRYONMU Thanks for watching.
Diversity there ranges from black to blacker to blackest.
Why do they call Washington Park Charlie park? I always wonder that.
It's a black thing Damien. Was never referred to as Charley Park back in the day
What is a St Paul?
+TNJKENN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul_sandwich
TNJKENN a sandwich store my grandmother use to eat it all the time
youre very welcome.
Why did this city go to hell?
OK, How about this idea. Build a fence around ESL and make it into a penal colony.
@JoanBeatrington001 I understand that feeling.
East St Louis is so bad there isnt even graffiti, that's how dead it is.
It's a damn shame our own ppl allow our hoods to become like this not just East St louis everymajor city in tha US.We accept the savage mentality on how some of us live we got to do better
@jwedel13 Sometimes I have to drive through Brooklyn, but I don't stop there. It is not a nice place to be. Best wishes to you.
Why are you driving so fast ?? . give people the chance to recognize it.
