This almost looks like one of those "The World After People" documentaries …or at least a city without a single lawn mower. Nicest thing is the train. I've read that ESL was once very beautiful.
East St.Louis once had a population of some 80,000 people. Now less than 26,000❗️ Like, 1/3 of when I grew up. I’m from University City, but had friends on the East Side. E.St.L. Always had problems [ a lot to do with the way in which it was originally founded and layed out. When the factories got too old, and too costly to maintain/ rebuild, the companies packed up, went elsewhere for cheaper. Very little revenue, and corruption, almost from its inception. But I remember a bustling, busy city, with mostly good people, just trying to live.
Worked in E.st.L. I drove all over the county and mostly through there from 2007-2022. So strange to finally see some of the missing buildings. i used to wonder what they might have looked like all the time i was down there.
Looks depressing. East St Louis, IL is almost like Camden, NJ. Once booming city now shit hole. Both across the river from their neighboring cities. The feels
I used to drive around East St.Louis IL , and go visit cousins and go to the clubs in Washington Park drive to the Gumpers and Alorton down Bond Ave . When Trucking Companies started hauling freight over the Interstates there was no more need much for Rail Roads that made East St.Louis The City it was by serving Industry and Packing Companies there so Industry left and then people followed at one time 80'000 whites lived in East St.Louis Illinois but by the 70's it was going down hill and fast and when crack cocaine and gangs started up that was the final death blow to East St.Louis Illinois.
@Willy RockBags Yeah, it’s been a few years since I’ve been through there. There were block after block of derelict houses and buildings, many were burned out. Now it looks like most have been bulldozed, and block after block of empty spaces and “ re-claimed areas. From what I’ve seen ( videos) looks almost rural. BUT , then, I remember when it was a bustling city. Where all those empty blocks are, we’re thriving neighborhoods. Business, parks.... I had a couple friends lived over there. It was always dangerous, but as long as one minded their own business, never had any problems ( and I’m white). 📻🙂
East St Louis reminds me of Niagara Falls NY which is another factory town that is now crime ridden, poverty strickened with severe urban decay and abandonment.
I used to still visit East St.Louis Illinois Often until a pistol was pulled on me and then in 2008 or 2009 a fight broke out at the school at 50th and State Street police showed up and students attacked the police I had gotten off the city bus and was going into the store when Police started shooting at the teens / students attacking them I ran into the St. Joseph's Coat Veterans Center across the street from the school praying I did not get hit by the volley of bullets the police was firing and mothers screaming it was total chaos so I decided I was done with East St.Louis IL .A man can only encounter danger so many times before that danger consumes a man if he is not wise enough to decide to head for better social areas I'm on the bay front in San Diego , California but I still have memories of St.Louis and East St.Louis Illinois >> East Boogie .

I remember this day back in ‘93. I stayed on College Ave off Alhambra Ct. Double O crib and when the brick got knocked down. E Saint look like this bcuz of greedy big companies taking the jobs out the city.
("1993")This brings back memories when I was a kid :-)!

Can you make an Update, Drive the same route again in 2019, that would be funky.
Or just drive through there at night 😧
It seems there has been a big push to finally take down a lot of those abandoned rat/ fire traps, and Crime is DOWN - for a change 😁
@Willy RockBags
I guess it depends on when you last seen it.
Looks a whole lot more vacant than when I last saw it.

@@jeffking291 Crime is down because it’s no one left; at the time this video was made ESL had at 35K people; today it’s barely 23K.
What's the name of the song that is playing in the video...it's very haunting, but nice

Gloomy is right - and not just the weather. Has the Metrolink brought any improvements to the area?
I know your comment is 8 years old, but no. The Metrolink itself is a haven for crime.

The area of State St between 20th and 16th was once a vibrant business area but by the late 80s and early 90s was overrun by gangs and crack dealers.
