I think the box allows the mini to establish a GPS center for the circle as well as a target to have the camera track with the use of yaw as the circle is flown. The circle still will be flown as a GPS circle/no actual tracking. If the target moves too quickly out of frame then camera tracking lock is broken but the circle completes.
@@dursunn Spark only had front facing sensors. Furthermore, they could have an active track that tracks by keeping you in frame. The operator controls all the movements.

I found a way to get around the lock geo zone. My house is located in a geo zone. Power everything but the drone first. Then power up the drone. The second the image comes on your device, start the motors with the joystick and launch right away. This should bypass the geo zone lock. The second you land, it will get locked.
Wow! I'm glad that you experimented and found this out. My little Mavic Mini continues to surprise me. The more I use it, the more i love it. Thanks for sharing this.
Or maybe because it doesn't have collision sensors, so they don't want to risk it crashing into things when active tracking. All other drones have the collision sensors
@@wearbabe agree, I think they were focused on the weight and it was on top priority. At it's price point, its an awesome drone. Less features but still a great drone, specially with the flight time.

If you do your research, you’ll find most drone accidents, where people lose their drones are when they are flying sideways and the Drone runs into a tree or some other object.
Well, I read the title and instantly knew what's coming lol. It's not exactly that DJI would gurantee no damage/colission with any of their obstacle avoidance systems but at least they can say that they added as much saftey mechanics as they could for this special feature. You can't compare active track with the other quickshot modes because in all other modes, the subject is supposed to stand still while active track is clearly meant to be used with moving objects. I wouldn't be supprised if DJI patches this out with the next FW release instead of adding active track .... we'll see, but don't be mad at me if they do so ;-)
Active tracking, raw files, 360 automated picture taking, bracketing, devkit for Litchi, all of these requires nothing more than a removed software limitation to not be an artificially stripped down version of what is already there.

Do you think they would add active track even though the Mini doesn’t have any avoidance capabilities? Doesn’t seem like that would be wise from the manufacturer perspective or the operator/owner perspective.
Think Mini 2, 3, 4 ... a good percentage of Mini 1 buyers will buy future Minis to get more features like real active tracking. It's all part of good product planning to sustain sales. Many people hope free firmware updates will bring in "missing" features, but updates are mainly to fix bugs.
Hey so I basically bought DJI care refresh and DJI care refresh + for my mavic mini in the same date.I was wondering if the warranty is now activated and for how long is it activated for?
The Spark, the predecessor to the mini has active tracking during the quickshot modes and offers several additional quickshot modes not available on the mini. Of course, it's major drawback is the 10 minute flight time and the 1080p limit on video (it also weighs more than 250 grams) but I still use my spark to this day because despite the lower resolution, the camera color accuracy is better on the spark, the tracking is far better, and I love the additional lighting the spark offers that is not on the mini. Oh, and if you want waypoint flights? There are alternative apps that can do just that, although, again, with the limited 10 minute flight time, is not all that useful.
Thanks for the info! I am amazed at what this little drone can do! At first, I wasn't really interested in it. But wow......I had no idea what this drone can actually do (handle wind, camera quality, features). For the price.....it's better than it should be. I will seriously consider buying one soon. Thanks for this video, helped me make my decision to get one.
Interesting ! I am new with drones and have about 10 flights with the Mini. I am already comfortable with it. I have sent a request to Mavic that we could calibrate our own yaw rates in C, P and S modes. Standard yaw is way to fast for video capture in all of these modes. Any Mini user will see this. More requests on this to Mavic might yield some useful reaction in firmware updates.
My first drone was a Phantom 2 Vision plus. I hated it and never bought another drone till the mini came out and thought screw it I have some savings. Bought it flew it around the house to get used to the controls and I absolutely love it. Compared to the phantom 2v+ this is a massive upgrade for me
Just a guess. I think the Mini defaults to the minimal C (Cine) speed when you invoke one of the Quickshots. Once the angular velocity of the subject exceeds the device's limit in C Mode, the subject moves out of the range of the lock and the lock is lost. Guessing again, the drone's angular velocity in a spiral is already close to the C Mode velocity limit.

I'm not sure Russ. I tried to get the drone to track me in circle mode while walking, and it was not terribly reliable. I kind of wonder if thats why you have to use the DJI Fly app as opposed to the Go 4 app. If we could use the Go 4 app with the Mini then, maybe, active track would be available?
Nice little trick there. I suspected that it could actively track but there's no way DJI will unlock it. They want you to pay to play. I took mine out yesterday and had some fun with the quick shots. I'm currently trying to get a solid work flow out of this little thing for some Photogrammetry...so far its working OK! As for the camera quality, I'm actually surprised how good it looks. As usual, UA-cam destroys the quality of the footage, but right off the drone it's way better than I expected. More than good enough for Instagram and even not to bad for larger screens with a little bit of post done to it. This little guy wont replace my custom rigs that carry GoPros and bigger cameras but because it's so small it now goes with me everywhere!
Hi any pointers when you’re flying by the water? Trees? Do I have turn on or off something? What if my drone lost signal is there any buying to avoid that? Please help thanks
It doesn't have collision avoidance, active tracking without that is to risky it will crash into things and thats why they disabled it and not because it can't track. It's because it can't detect obstacles im guessing, no sensors.
Got it as my first drone 2 days ago. Unfortunately very windy here so haven't flown much and working night shift on a reality TV show so no time. But I see dji will release the sdk later this year and then the litchi app will hopefully be compatible and it has a ton of features.
You can make it fly in a no-fly zone if you started up without a cell phone hooked up to the controller.. power the controller and the mini on and then put the sticks diagonally down in or out you can't fly as high or far away but you can still fly it in restricted areas

I'm thinking the active track feature was disabled because the Mini doensn't have any obstacle avoidance features. It would be pretty easy to lead the Mavic Mini into a tree or bridge if it were blindly following you along a path... As far as stable, I'm amazed. I just took some footage of palm trees swaying in a moderate wind and the Mavic Mini is rock solid stable!

Please get active tracking! Im amazed at how scary being a newbie i am afraid of losing this little guy! Ive been slowly expanding my limits! Thank you
Try and watch some YT videos on flyaways, they almost always involve someone piloting their mini out in a situation where it cannot get back (wind). Try and fly into the wind going out so you can come back with the wind, if it's way too windy don't fly. If it loses connection it should RTH but remember it may go high to come home, if there's wind this could be a problem. Planning can avoid all of this! Fly within your limits. You'll be ok! :o)
I guess it is possible to give the mini active track. If so, the question remains weather DJI wants to implement it or rather keep the feature excluively to other models to make the beginners upgrade at some point.
I am able to self unlock mine in blue zone. I live right next door to an Army base the red zone starts at there fence and they do have a runway but it's a bit north of me.
Hi Russ, hanks for the great tips shared. Just a quick question. Do I need to deactivate the quick shot mode and steer it back after the video is taken or will it deactivate itself and come back towards you ?
From what I gather, the tracking in Mavic Mini use the phone processor instead of the dedicated on board processor like other DJI drones. So you need a phone with fairly powerful processor to get the tracking work right. I guess that's why DJI still doesn't include the capability yet, aside from several obvious issues of streaming tracking data from phone to the drone like latency and interference..
I assumed tracking was disabled because they want you to buy the higher end models for that. Also I think I heard it is the app on your phone that is actually controlling the drone, not the drone itself. So if that's the case, it probably depends on your phone's processing power.
Great vid, did you try moving forward in Dronie setting? I'm wondering if it would travel even further and keep track of you. I have this drone and I mountain bike looking to get some short tracking sessions with it.
Thanks for the informations. I am a DJI Mini newbie. Can you recommend an app, where I can safe it in full hd? And how could you upload the video even in 4K, when the Mini only offers 2.7K?
Very nice sir. When circling, I wonder if you being on the ATV (large target) helped the Mini to follow you more easily? I've seen videos where the subject was a single person, and it was an epic fail every time.
I am sorry if this is a silly question. I have never used the quick shots. In all of the videos the pilot is the subject. Is it possible for me to fly across a field locate something interesting and make that the subject of the quick shot.
Hey Russ, I like your experimental nature. I wonder if the reason they don't have active track on this drone is because it doesn't have forward obstacle sensors? We viewers are thankful for your channel, as well! Keep up the good work!
How do add active track to a drone with no object avoidance detection? I think the mini uses the same software programming as active track but it could never full perform active tracking without object avoidance detection.
I definetly think it's possible for active tracking with an update...but without any obstacle avoidance and this drone being meant for the masses I doubt DJI will include it but maybe!
Is there any type of “hack“ for the Quickshot: Dronie effect? I wish I could get a video recording of the drone coming toward me with the camera staying on me while I’m working out and not operating the controller. I sometimes do this with the dronie feature and then edit the footage playing in reverse. But this doesn’t always look great. Any ideas, insight, or insider news, I’d love to hear.

Cool find 😎👍 Thanks for sharing.
Great video! What are your video camera settings? Your video looks much more clearer than mine at 30 fps!
Hi Russ, hanks for the great tips shared. Just a quick question. Do I need to deactivate the quick shot mode and steer it back after the video is taken or will it deactivate itself and come back towards you ?
Let hope active track is on the way! Thanks bud
Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS. Hope you have a good one 🤗
I assumed tracking was disabled because they want you to buy the higher end models for that. Also I think I heard it is the app on your phone that is actually controlling the drone, not the drone itself. So if that's the case, it probably depends on your phone's processing power.
Thank you for testing the somewhat active mode with the quick shot featre.
Thank you for sharing this! I was wondering this very thing.
Thanks Tim!
Nice tips man!
Congratulations from Brasil! 🇧🇷
How do add active track to a drone with no object avoidance detection? I think the mini uses the same software programming as active track but it could never full perform active tracking without object avoidance detection.
"many generic videos out there but this is different".. proceeds to do another generic video.. we love your content no need to sugarcoat it.
Great info Russ. Looks like you’re having lots of fun with the mini.
Never thought of that . Hmmm gonna try with spark until i finally get the mini .
Spark has active track 🤔🤷🏽♀️
So has it come become an option with any of the updates almost a year later?
Hi there about the circle mode while you kayaking in the lake , how.do you land the drone while in the lake ?
Just ordered my mini Friday, beyond pumped for it! I really do hope it gets active track.
Hey, I got a question. I got the fly more combo and it comes with the 3 battery charger storage thing. I’m storing it in my cabinet in the case, do I just leave my batteries inside the 3 battery storage charger thing
