How to prevent Flyaways and Blowaways and what to do iif your Mavic Mini is being blown away. I explain why flyaways happen, how to stop them and what tips and tricks you can use to make sure your drone isn't blown away and lost.
I go through the steps to regain control if your Mini is unable to Return To Home and avoid crashing your drone altogether. I also explain how to use the Find My Drone function to recover a lost drone and how to make a controlled remote landing.

Hi Ian, very helpful video mate..
It's a shame, I truly believe dji made a mistake with this drone and has used undersized and powered motors, and I don't think it will turn out to be a big seller like the air and pro. Even though the spark is around only 60g heavier is handles wind so much better then the mavic mini due to the much more powerful motors, its a shame I think the mavic mini is z great drone but it being under powered is stopping me buying one, I'd rather keep my spark for sure..
Have a good weekend Ian, and happy flying all 👍

Very good info, my son thought that he lost his mini over a very large lake. He was out about 1.5 miles checking out a couple small islands and he was getting a couple strong wind advisers when out of no where he lost everything. We both sure he had lost it forever when after about ten minute that little drone found its way home. Very scary indeed.

Thank You. When I was considering buying the Mavic Mini (2 months ago), at that time it did [not] have the "Find My Drone" feature, in the DJI app and that's why I decided to buy the Mavic 2 Pro. But, from what you're saying, it apparently does now. I still plan on buying a Mavic Mini eventually simply because it 'so small' and easy to carry around. Great informative video Ian. I took my mini out today for the first time, was getting impatient of flying it indoors waiting for ideal conditions. UAV Forecast was suggesting 14kmph winds so I decided to just go for it. Headed out up to some moorland and had the drone up in the air for about 5 mins. Once I gained an altitude of about 20 meters I could see she was fighting to hold position. To make things worse, I hadn't checked my phone battery (I know) and the thing just died on me with the mini about 50 meters away and about 20 meters alt. To say I panicked is an understatement, RTH button was pressed which began to increase altitude (I had RTH alt. set to 50mtrs) so I took control, dropped it to about 3 meters and she limped back to me. Funny thing was, she didn't want to descend to the ground to land so I had to grab her out of the air from about 5 feet. This was a close call and I am worried now that I should only fly her in ideal conditions which is a shame as the forecast looks poor up here in yorkshire for the next few weeks at least. Thanks for the video, I will be paying much more attention in the future! You live and learn I guess.

While tilted flying forward the rear propellors get wash from from the front propellors. Fly backwards and all four propellors will see cleaner air. Also don't fly outdoors using the guards as they add a lot of drag.
I wonder if Mavic could be convinced to change the RTH algorithm to return home flying backwards if ground speed drops below a threshold.

Sounds like a failed product but looks like the OP provided some nice tips. I will avoid this product altogether. Rather spend a bit more that can handle normal use.

thank you Ian...up till now i have just been relying on the high wind warning that dji swaks now and again and what i can visually see or feel. this video has givin me a better insight into wind and how it affects the mini, great job!

Always prepare your flights to start against the wind is the golden rule... it gives you time to assess the wind strength with little risks and will help everything else.
There was strong winds coming from the land, during my last “above the see” flight, then I drove to an island just to be able to launch against the wind... I have a disco with a pitot tube, so I always know both airspeed and ground speed, and even with cruise airspeed at 30mph, my ground speed might be negative! Then I land immediately, using full throttle to 50mph airspeed and be able to have positive ground speed (if you need to double your airspeed to stay in the air, your power draw will be four times higher and the battery will be empty in a very few minutes...).
Whatever the drone, launching against the wind is THE golden rule.
Thank you for this video, true for mavic minis and everything else ;)
