      @@marybee101Hey I am 32 years old, I have been in school, then I got into the military at 25 then left a little while ago. I could not for the life of me figure what I wanted to do. Until I got hurt and realized that I want to help people as I was helped. So a career in the health field is a what I want. Now it’s doing the research and looking at it from as many perspectives as you can. You got this!! Both of you. There are so many different routes in the health field to go. Possibilities are vast.

    Thank you for this content! I’ve been trolling too many Reddit threads and FB groups filled w people complaining about the field! Choosing this field is a hard decision when grad school is such a big investment of time and energy! I want to be confident in my choices but the truth seems to be that there are pros and cons to every job and career choices are all kind of a gamble until you’re working in the trenches

    • @PediatricSpeechPals
      @PediatricSpeechPals  2 роки тому +11

      Exactly! Every job seems to have pros and cons and each one of those are so subjective. Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for us. I think specifically for speech pathology it is hard because you really don’t get much experience in the field before graduate school unless you seek it out, which can produce unrealistic expectations. It’s always good to at least job shadow or volunteer to get some eyes-on experience in the field before heading straight into grad school to help with job satisfaction. Thanks for your comment 😊

    If I am majoring in Psychology with a double minor in education and art is this good for grad school. Because my college doesn’t offer SLP major so is this a good alternative? Also what are requirements/prerequisites grad schools look for?

    • @PediatricSpeechPals
      @PediatricSpeechPals  Рік тому +2

      Hi! I think those majors hit a lot of courses that are similar to those of an undergrad degree in communication disorders. I would take a look at the asha.org website. They lay out specifically what course you need when applying to grad school. Also schools you’re interested in will have a list of course that are required to be admitted into their program.

    Hello! I’m a senior in college getting my prerequisites to go into speech pathology grad school. I worry that I’m in it for the wrong reasons. I like the career and the flexibility and the money but I don’t really have much experience with kids. I would like to know why you guys want to become SLPs, what’s your “why”? I want to become an SLP because I am interested in the subject, it pays well, and there are several settings to work in.

    • @PediatricSpeechPals
      @PediatricSpeechPals  Рік тому +5

      Hello! That is a very good question. Undergrad really does not set you up that well for understanding what the field will be like since most undergrad programs are only theoretically based. If I were you, I would try and volunteer, job shadow, and/or try to find a job working with kids. This will help you decide if you even like the population and the therapy involved. Personally, I (Melissa) chose this field for a bunch of reasons: 1) I think it is super rewarding, you really can make a huge difference in these children and families lives. 2) I LOVE kids, so it is great to work with them every day. 3) The flexibility 4) The pay. I think when it comes down to it, make sure you like the population you are working with and the therapy that you would be providing. You can find other jobs that have security, flexibility, and pay well but the beauty of this job is the people and families you get to work with.

    Would someone who is very introverted be a good fit for the job? I did biology and linguistics and I always wanted a very hands-on career, but medicine is obviously too people-oriented for me. I'd say I like helping older people, but I'm not too confident about communicating with many different kinds of people. Do introverts find this job draining?

    • @megananne7744
      @megananne7744 11 місяців тому +2

      As an introvert, yes it can be draining. You have to talk to people as it’s a major part of the job.

    • @PediatricSpeechPals
      @PediatricSpeechPals  11 місяців тому +4

      Good question! I think it depends on the person, but for me it is not too bad since I am seeing a consistent group of people each week. Also, I also feel more confident since I am there to provide a service and help support families so there is a purpose for the communication rather than just small talk. That’s been my experience at least!

    • @PediatricSpeechPals
      @PediatricSpeechPals  Рік тому

      Hi! You can be a travel SLP or an in-home SLP or private practice SLP where you can pick your own hours and create a flexible schedule. You could also start your own business and/or do only teletherapy. Some SLP settings are less flexible than others but I think you can definitely find the freedom and flexibility you're looking for using some of the other settings. ☺

      Hi! Great question! The quickest way to enter the field besides volunteer work, job shadowing, etc. would be to become a SLPA. According to ASHA’s website there are three education options that you can take to become a SLPA. The first option mentions how to become one by having an associate’s degree.

I’m keeping my grades up and I’ve already join NSSHLA, but I’m starting to get interested in other groups (A sorority that raises awareness on literacy and the possibly my college’s rowing team). I’m afraid that my focus not being 100% on SLP will hinder rather than help me trying to get into grad school. I also don’t have a job at the moment. Any advice or perspective you could give on the topic would help immensely! Much love to you both 🫶🏼

      Hey! I (Melissa) totally understand your worry, but I think it would be totally reasonable for you to be in a sorority and/or on your college rowing team! Luckily (at least at my school) both sororities and sports offered great study times and tutoring options if needed. I also think that you should experience what you want to in college and then if it’s necessary to take a step back to focus more on school, you always can! It’s obviously up to you and what you think you can handle, but I would hate for you to look back at college wishing you had done those things. 😊
