PT training tends to be more structured. OT training often doesn’t have a protocol, it’s more about whether or not the patient is satisfied with your services and this is where your creativity jumps in
Both professions know the entire body in and out. Both are extremely helpful but OT has an additional area that we can dive into which is Mental health.
Wow! Right now at my internship I get to help out with both PT and OT, and even though I am going for physical therapy I have a new found respect for occupational therapists. Both professions truly work hand in hand as a team.
Thats so awesome! Its great you're getting that experience because you can see different areas of rehab and how other professions can treat too. such a great opportunity!!
At my job it’s like pt and ot don’t know what the other is doing. One will write 1 asast for transfer and the other will make hoyer transfer for toilet. So many care plan inconsistencies.
Good to see an OT and PT respecting each other’s fields. During my shadowing, PT and OT would consult each other to get the best of both worlds, but at my MOT program there is very little intermingling. Some say the PT’s have a superiority complex, but I think it’s just because either professional is more comfortable with their cohort. Great video!
Fr idk why the PTs freakout when OTs treat the neck. Its in the scope... and usually i find the people angry or with the superiority complex are the older generations
Wanna know your story! Why you chose *PT* (I chose because growing up i have immense love and respect for elderly ppl i wanna give them life by helping them in mobility and yeah i think that’s the max I could do I have great oratory skills so it helps me to *CONNECT W PPL* and *improve their life w My skills* )
Just discovered your videos and I love them!! It’s helping me get a clear picture of each job and which I really want to do with my kinesiology degree when I finish undergrad!!
Thank you, I’m a freshman in college right now. I was going to go into nursing but I have always been skeptical about doing it. I just felt pressured so I chose a career. But I want to change it, so I have been doing my research. I’m stuck between these two careers and even after this video, I still cannot decide!!!
Hey Rita what did you decide? I originally want to get into PTA and messed up on my requirements, so I went into the LPN program which had the same prereqs. Now I'm a pediatric lpn. But I'm planning on working towards a bachelor's in nursing and using that to go towards the DPT program.
I’m the same way. I was so set on nursing but overall decided it was a career choice that was too stressful and hard to follow through with. I’m set on occupational therapy now!
I’ve been in healthcare careers for over 30 years, and as an MSOTR for over 20. PT and OT are both valuable, both needed. I’ve worked in general and rehab hospitals, state psych hospital, SNF-Rehab, out patient clinics, and home health. Not in schools. That said, from my experiences, I think PTs have higher pay rates, greater demand for their services, and a more “succinct” way of defining their clinical role to patients and the community - including to our cohorts like MDs and nurses! I’ve got 9 years under my belt as a home health OT. My treatment time with patients is longer and more involved than the PTs I’ve worked with. They can see 30-40 folks in a week, to my 20-25. And since we’re paid “per visit”, and I often have an even smaller caseload, the PTs are earning much more than me.
OTs are greatly needed in hospitals because hospitals know OTs are versatile but they SCAM them by paying them lower when it should be higher or same. Either way the hospital is making alot from both therapists and paying them pennies. OTs that worked over 20 years know this. The PTs are paid but the hospitals really need OTs for some reason we still cant comprehend but the OTs now get paid around $40-45 an hour. Outpatient rn market is $37 minimum (still low because 15 years ago when a bunch of the OTs i worked with were paid 36). Home Health is around $50-55.
In Australia, OTS get paid alot especially if they worth within the disability field. The disability field in Australia is huge, people can get 24hr care. OTs do all their assessments. They get $200 an hr.
You both covered a lot but neither of you described what differentiates your therapy focus from each other. I know most patients have no idea what differentiates you in the treatment performed. Otherwise very good.
I would love to be an OT or PT but I’m super old now so, 7 years on I’ll be old so old. I wish we could go back in time I would have done better at school got a tutor if needed and started knowing more occupations to choose from and learn about so I could have been an OT or PT.
I am sorry to hear that you feel older. It is never too late to get into a profession, but I have to admit, there is a lot of work and a lot of time required to become a OT or a PT. Have you considered the assistant route? Like PTA?
Go for OTA or PTA. I am 24 and did not want to go back to school for 7 years. Ota only requires 2 years and depending on your state the pay is awesome. If you want to continue on to OT after that, they have bridge programs to move you forward in
