So good being Aussie & knowing the brands. Maybe some instruction what is happening inserted while rolling could ge added occasionally.
Thanks mate! Good advice I’ll work on that for future videos 👍
Looking amazing. At lock up stage! Keep the vids coming. Can't wait to see the next stage.
Just about! Thanks heaps we really appreciate it!
Great work can't wait to see you do the inside
Thanks heaps Patrick, the next episode should be released next Friday 👍
the van looks so cool, your doing a great job. love the reno vids. look forward to your journey. we did a bit of a reno on our old van wish i did it to length you guys did, all the best guys
Thanks heaps Stephen, appreciate the comments! It’s been an awesome van and we are loving travelling in it. That sounds awesome, I’m sure yours is still a great van. All the best 👍
👍 Making progress
Every little bit counts 👍
The side clearance lights seem to be very high on the sides. The one we had were down a lot lower, just thinking they maybe a problem when it comes time to register, ours also had them at the front. Your doing a great job
Hi Malcolm, those clearance lights are the original ones and are in the original location. We had no dramas registering it and all passed no worries at all. Thanks heaps mate we really appreciate it!

Hi guys. Awesome job you've done. What a transformation. I may have missed it somewhere, but when installing your new j rails, are you applying V60 into the rails prior to screwing them back on? Can those j rails go on a 1976 franklin using original cladding or are specific to certain new insulated panelling and roofing which is thicker?
Thanks so much!
Yes that’s how we did it. We applied it quite thick to the J-rail and then screwed it up. Wiped away the excess and applied more to any gaps as well over the screw heads holding the J-rail on. That type of J-rail wasn’t the same as our original but I think it should work for most vans and I think it would be fine for your 76 Franklin 🙂
Cheers. Great to hear the j rails are somewhat universal. I am going to try and salvage my original, but won't get overly stressed if it doesn't work out knowing there is a backup plan to purchase new ones. Yours look great on your van by the way. They suit your overall van shape and makes it POP.
@@soniacarr5932 thanks heaps! We’re we’re going to go with the black J rail but we felt the polished alloy look looked a bit original 🙂 that’s it, we would have used our old J rail but we were missing pieces and some were damaged so we couldn’t really salvage it. Best of luck 👍
Thanks again for these videos. Why did you decide to roll rather than spray the paint on?
Our pleasure! We decided to roll rather than spray as we didn’t have a good quality spray gun at the time and it wasn’t in our budget to purchase a good one. The one that we did have access to was only a cheap spray gun and didn’t work great so we decided to roll it on.
Hey guys, good job. Just wondering how much you've spent on everything?
Thank you! We don’t have an exact amount but we paid around $5K for the van itself and spent another $13 -$14K renovating it 🙂
Great vids, thanks so much!! Can I ask how much paint you went through? I'm also glad you showed me how well it came out painting by roller, I was going to look at hiring a sprayer, but this looks great and 10x easier for a diyer.
Our pleasure! That’s a good question, I can’t quite remember exactly how much I used. I have a feeling it might have been around 3-4L of white top coat and maybe around 3L of the yellow top coat. I 100% agree, for the DIYer I think rolling it can be a bit easier. If you get your brushing technique spot on it can turn out quite well. Rolling everything off in the one direction seemed to produce the best results for us. On the white, we rolled back and forward and unfortunately in some light you can see where we’ve started and stopped. With the yellow however, I rolled everything off in the one direction and you can’t see any transitions and looks much neater 👍 all the best with yours!
Love the videos, subscribed to follow your journey. I'm doing things in a bit of a different order to you as I want to check side for any wood damage from leaks. We have a 14.5 foot · 1978 Coronet Van that was done a bit inside but our first trip we had a bad leak.
With the J-Rail did you find the old one hard to remove? I'm finding the silicone on the van, under it is well seated. Any thoughts how you did it. Thank you
Thanks heaps mate glad you’re enjoying them! That’s great hope it’s coming along good for you! We had a bit of wood damage from where the j-rail had leaked but have since fixed that in a previous video.
The old j-rail was easy to remove as the sealant was old and dry so the rail itself come off easy enough but the old dry sealant was hard to remove. I ended up chipping off what I could with a flat blade and hammer and the rest using a nylon wheel in the drill and it worked awesome!
Also, how many V60 canisters did you go through do you remember for entire van?
Hi 🙂
I can’t quite remember who many exactly but would have gone through at least 3 or so. I applied it pretty liberally to ensure a good seal. That Bostik V60 is by the beast sealant I’ve ever used. Hasn’t dried out or cracked and doesn’t seem to stain like other sealants and only around $10 a tube 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I just purchased 15 tubes to get me started, so I'm glad to hear your positive feedback about its durability and benefits.
Thanks guys. Happy travels.
@@soniacarr5932 it’s fantastic stuff. Even if your don’t use all 15 tubes it’s great to keep a few spare for any leaks that might pop up in future 👍
Hi guys, I like the checker plate you used on the front of the van, what mm thickness is that?
Hey mate, the checker plate front is 1.6mm thick. Check out our episode 2 which is where we installed it 👍
@@jossandell Thanks heaps guys, great Jon on the van!!! it looks fantastic
@@cameronbutler5227 anytime! Thanks heaps Cameron we’re stoked with it!
Why primer, you had base coat from the old paint?
We went back to the bare aluminium in places so we wanted the best adhesion with putting down a primer first 👍
@@jossandellit depends largely on the existing condition of the original paint, most of the time you only need to sand back the original coat and paint over that. Nice paint job by the way, looks awesome in that marine yellow.
Great job!May I know the name for the tape?
Thank you! Are you talking about the masking tape?
Hi guys. How have you found the chalking tape to seal the windows?any leaks since doing them? I have ordered the same as you used. Did you have to reinforce the seal around the boarder with bustik V60 ?
The putty tape we used to seal the windows in hasn’t leaked at all and we didn’t go around it with the Bostik V60 either. We only sealed the j-rail in with Bostik V60 which has worked so well and hasn’t leaked either.
Thank you for replying and sharing your experiences.
@@soniacarr5932 it’s out pleasure 🙂 On the hatch door for our slide out kitchen which I mounted the same way as the windows, I’m pretty sure I did seal around it with the Bostik V60 as well so if you wanted to do it around the windows it can’t hurt. Just adds another layer of protection from water getting in 🙂
Hi great job can I get details of the j rail and rubber to seal it please
Hi there, thanks heaps! In the description we have linked where we purchased the j-rail and rubber insert from. We bought it from StyroMax.
Cheers!
THANK YOU FOR VIDEO
Our pleasure 😁
What does “rubbing it back in between” mean?
Also, your one of the few caravan Reno’s I’ve seen make it past episode 4, so great job!
@@katiemiller3042 Thank you for jumping on and watching Kate 😊 Sorry, in Joss' words, it means 'giving it a light sand between each coat so it makes the primer a nicer surface to adhere to.'
GOOD VIDEO MATE, HOWEVER THE VOLUME LEVEL GOES UP & DOWN, WHILE YOU ARE TALKING, I HAVE TO TURN IT UP TO HEAR YOU, THEN THE MUSIC COMES ON AND IT'S SOOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD----WHY IS IT LIKE THAT?
Hi Geoff, thanks for the comment mate, not too sure why that is happening? I’ll have to play it back again and make sure it’s all good. I’ll make note to check the levels are spot on next time 👍
