Hey guys! Looking great! Did adding the new axel and drawbar increase your load limit on the van?
Hi there! Thank you 🙂 Although it’s definitely stronger with the new drawbar, leaf springs/axle and hubs, we chose the same weight rated leaf pack (1600kg) to maintain our original GVM so no engineering was required 🙂
Thanks, I learnt a lot. Just putting in new ones myself and wasn't sure about something and ended up learning something else. Cheers
So glad to hear you learnt something from the video! All the best 🙂
Where did you guys get the hatch from! I can’t find one like that anywhere
We bought our Hatch door from RV Parts Express. I’ll pop the link the below 👍 www.rvpartsexpress.com.au/access-door-3-white-415-x-581-white.html
just wondering why you decided not to spray and went with rolling??
I would have preferred to spray it but the spray gun we had wasn’t very good and could never get a nice finish off it. Also didn’t want to have to spend more money buying a decent spray gun so just decided to roll it. It didn’t come out too bad considering but spraying would have achieved a nicer finish if done right 🙂
Great work guys 👏👏👏 Hows the LG fridge holding up? Been tossing up between the LG and Kings.
Thanks heaps! It went awesome basically didn’t turn it off for around 7 months straight. Unfortunately the thermostat started playing up with it after around 2 and a bit years but we got a brand new fridge under warranty. Otherwise it’s awesome for the price. I’ve got the bushman 85L upright in my Ute canopy and it’s such a great fridge.
Do you still have the l8bk for this heater ?
Hi there, what is I8bk?
@jossandell ha ha trying to work that out for myself ha ha it was supposed to be link fat fingers ha ha
@@clintonthompson5551 haha all good mate, I just tried to copy the link for it from eBay but the listing no longer exists. It was a 3KVA diesel heater, came with the tank, plumbing, wiring etc. still working good!
An RVD is not meant to replace an RCD but meant to be used in conjunction.
Thanks for the info 👍
What camera are you using to film your videos?
Just our phone on 4K video quality 🙂
Far out! Can I hire your old man for a week or 2?? Asking for a friend ❤️
Haha he’s pretty handy! 😂
Move the exhaust to the edge so it points out and away from the under side of the rv. Think car exhaust and carbon monoxide. The control panel should be away from the duct if you are controlling it by temperature. On the tank fitting, I would put the o ring on the fitting first so it gets compressed instead of grinding it up with the but. Otherwise nicely done!
I wanted to point the exhaust towards the opposite side of the van but unfortunately the supplied exhaust pipe isn’t the longest and that’s the best I could do. You’re right there, the controller being close to the duct does tend to make the thermostat think it’s at temp before it actually is (front of the van tends to be warmer than the rear because of this) but doesn’t affect it too much. And yes after making this video I did notice I put the o-ring on the wrong side however it’s never leaked surprisingly haha. Thanks again mate!
Awesome video thanks , lots of great ideas
Thanks heaps mate appreciate it!
Hi again, where is the tassie oak bench top from?
Hi 🙂 just from Bunnings
Do you have an estimate on total cost for the Reno? We are looking to start out
Including the price of the van we estimate around $19K. $5k for the van and around $14K on Reno’s. It helps if you can score the van for cheap, we paid a bit too much for ours in our opinion.
Great, be using this 👌
Thank you 🙌
I just wanted to say something about your build. The both of u should be proud of yourselves most people who comment wouldn't have done this. Great to see both of you a young couple living your dreams. Great work
Thanks heaps for the nice comment! We are proud ourselves and of our build and love taking it away. Cheers
Love the series guys! Just wondering what you guys do with your waste water if you’re ever free camping? Cheers (:
Thanks heaps! Depending on where we are we usually just let it run onto the ground or into a bucket and tip it into the bushes away from any water sources. If we’re at an unpowered/powered site we run our waste hose into the drain at the park 🙂
What sandpaper did you use and what foam roller?
I think from memory we might have sanded it with 120 grit and 240 grit between coats. The foam rollers were just from Bunnings, I think they were the 160mm high density foam rollers either in the 4mm or 9mm nap
@@jossandellhow well do I need to sand it back I used paint stripper it removed all the flakes/dusty paint? I will be using white knight etch primer and top coat
@ you shouldn’t really need to take it back to bare aluminium, just sanded back enough to get rid of the harsh imperfections
@@jossandell so just do a light sand over it but don’t remove all the paint? (Don’t hold the orbital sander in one spot just smooth all over?)
@ yeah that’s it you shouldn’t have to remove all the paint as long as it’s stable and not flaking off
Brilliant set-up. Thanks for the inspo. We have a wet room but because of the wheel base we can’t use a traditional shower tray so this is excellent. How did the waterproofing hold up with the travel/movement etc.
Thank you! It’s worked really well and we love that we can pack it away and open up the space in our van again 🙂 the waterproofing we used (Verseseal) has held up awesome with no leaks 🙂 it allows for a decent amount of movement too which is good
We absolutely love your vids guys, thank you. We’re on our second caravan reno although we’ve only done a surface reno so far. This next one’s a biggy. Just wondering how you managed re-certification doing the work yourselves? In NZ in order to receive an electrical or plumbing cert all work has to be completed by a licensed plumber or sparky.
Thanks heaps guys! That’s exciting! It’s a lot of work but rewarding at the same time. I did all of the 12v stuff myself which is fine but we had a sparky install our 240V wiring and compliance for that. As far as I know I don’t think you need a certified plumber to do the plumbing, I think from my understanding it’s just the 240V wiring 🙂
Hi guys, love your videos on the renovations of our caravan, just a quick question what is the name off( spring J clip ) pop top hold down the pop top… Dee 🌸🤩
Hi Dee, thank you! I’ve only ever seen those same handles for sale in our local caravan shop at the time (Riverina Caravan Repairs in Wagga Wagga) although the closest thing to them that I’ve seen is online under the name of spring loaded hood catch 🙂
@@jossandell Hi Joss & Dell, thank you for the information but can I get the name of the catch holder, you used, please thank. PS I was born in Wagga Wagga.. love the place…Dee
@@FawnBlay we used our original ones Dee, just painted them gold 🙂 there you go! It’s a good place! Cheers
Hey guys, Awesome! Can you pls tell me what you used to sand the exterior prior to painting?
Thank you! We mostly just used the orbital sander to sand the old paint back and then a light sand just by hand in between coats 🙂
Thanks so much! Is there a specific grit paper you used? We also have a 1977 Millard and doing a repaint 😊 Thanks again
@@JillianNewell-j3i can’t quite remember off the top of my head but I think 120 grit initially and then 240 - 400 grit between coats 🙂
Thanks so much
Did sunny come with electric brakes? Or did you add them? Love these videos, keep ‘em coming
We added them to Sunny 🙂 it had mechanical override brakes standard. Thanks heaps!
What a great setup!
Thanks heaps! The plumbing worked out really well
How’s the insulation going with the 10mm foil board? Trying to decide on whether I should go 10 or 20, I’m down in Melbourne and need to keep warm.
The foil board seems to be working well! We went with the 10mm as we don’t have much room between the wall cavity and wanted a bit of room to still run cabling. We also ran ours with the reflective side facing out hoping it would keep the warm out so I don’t know whether running it with the reflective side facing in would help keep it warmer on the inside?
What does your fridge sit on , does it just sit there and doesn’t move?
Hi, I’ve bolted down some 50 x 50 aluminium box section to the floor of the canopy and the fridge is mounted up on that to clear the lip of the door. I mounted some aluminium flat bar to the side of the fridge which is also bolted to the 50 x 50 box section to hold the fridge in place. I’ve put it up on our instagram page as a highlight reel 👍
Just found your channel, well done on the reno, can I please ask for details about the ramp at the entry. Thanks
Hi there, thank you we really appreciate it 🙂 sure, we bought ours online through Woolworths marketplace but this one here is exactly the same. www.rampitup.com.au/telescopic-portable-dog-ramp-adjustable-non-slip-e?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3bm3BhDJARIsAKnHoVW9v2w0S2xZqpbf8CKGDX1wbRJpFaOmSWw9wPVGfMxIT5T3km4sUgsaAvHJEALw_wcB
awesome presentation , many thanks for your hard work folks !!!!
Thanks heaps! Glad you liked it and it’s our pleasure!
How have you gone with mounting the maxtrax and solar panel? Im planning on doing the same rather than mount on my canopy.
Hi Tom, back when I filmed this video I had the solar panel mounted up on my rhino rack roof racks and just had my recovery tracks ratchet strapped down to the cross bars too. I’ve since made some racks for the canopy as I don’t have the RTT anymore and have flush mounted my solar panel between the canopy bars. If you send us a message on our instagram I can send you some photos 👍
@@jossandell cheers thank you 🙂
Great video , easy to follow and informative
Thanks for the feedback mate!
That was very good - never quite sure how tight/loose to set those wheel bearings, now I have a better idea. Thanks. I have another problem with my electric drum brakes - the left side always locks up when moving slowly and applying the brakes - they work fine at speeds greater than a crawl but the left wheel locks and skids when coming to a gentle stop. Any ideas where I need to look - I have adjusted and re-adjusted the brakes - same story regardless.
Thank you, glad you found it helpful. We haven’t experienced only one side locking up before, what type of electric brake controller are you running? When you have your foot on the brake (stationary) can you hear a hum/buzz sound from both hubs to indicate both brakes are working? My only other thought if you’ve adjusted your brakes is your controller is set too high causing it to lock up but other than that I’m not too sure about that one 🤔
Thanks. I don't hear a buzz or hum from either wheel when stationary. Might try listening with a screwdriver to see if I can tell. Regardless, that suggestion that one side is not getting the braking signal is one I hadn't considered since I don't "feel" the trailer pulling one way or the other, but why would I be able to tell from the drivers seat? I really appreciate your response - Thanks!
@@Bennyboy-dog you’ll only hear that buzz/hum when you have your caravan plugged in to the tow vehicle with the ignition on so the brakes are receiving 12V power. Have someone press the brake and listen near the hub to see if you can hear them engaging.
I'm interested in the type of grease you used , Was it a synthetic type of grease, The best grease to use is a clay based grease, Normally yellow in colour, I've used synthetic type grease which turned to oil type substance, Didn't last 2000 KLM, So just like your thoughts on this,
We used the kincrome high temp grease which is a lithium complex grease and said it was good for handling high temperatures well. We’re not experts on other this, but from what we understand, clay-based greases also handle high temps well and synthetic greases can offer great performance across various conditions. I think each type has its own benefits, so it really depends on what you need for your specific situation.
Lovely Ep and tips guys
Thanks heaps we appreciate it! Cheers
Hey Joss, very impressive - any chance you draw up your set up? I am thinking of having a tap that can switch between mains water or tank water heading into the hot water unit.
Thanks heaps mate. I don’t have a drawing of it sorry. I’ve been meaning to draw up what we’ve done and attach a link to it in the description. I’ll try and get around to it one of these days. The way I’ve plumbed ours up, when our van is hooked up to mains water, it’ll still work just the same with the hot water unit, the only thing I need to do different is turn the 12v water pump off.
@@jossandell ok thanks, one final question - your thoughts on the need for an expansion vessel/accumulator ?
@@jeffblunden8307 When researching them when I was doing the plumbing, I found that I didn’t need one with the seaflo water pump we used as it has a pressure relief bypass. I think if your water pump doesn’t have an internal bypass or pressure switch is when you need an accumulator from my understanding.
Great video once again! Just wondering why you decided to go a diesel heater instead of an air con?
Thank you! A couple of reasons. There’s nine windows in Sunny plus the 4 pop top windows so with the sirocco fan and a nice breeze there’s plenty of cross ventilation and air flow. Ell also hates being cold so the heater is super warm on those cold nights/days. The one time we wish we had an A/C was in Darwin when the nights we like 36 degrees and 90% humidity 🥵 We’d love to install an under bunk air con under the bed but they’re pretty pricey.
I love the rattan doors. Why did you decide to go with natural vs synthetic rattan?
Thanks heaps so do we! The natural rattan just looks better in our opinion and not as yellow and plastic looking like the synthetic one.
@@jossandell ok thank you so much for answering that Question. Do you think there is any risk of mould with the natural rattan?
@@MelissaKozaruk we haven’t experienced any mould with ours as of yet
Thanks again for these videos. Why did you decide to roll rather than spray the paint on?
Our pleasure! We decided to roll rather than spray as we didn’t have a good quality spray gun at the time and it wasn’t in our budget to purchase a good one. The one that we did have access to was only a cheap spray gun and didn’t work great so we decided to roll it on.
Hey mate just seeing how tall your canopy is ? Have just bought a 2020 Hilux with standard tray and not sure which canopy to get. Cheers
Hi mate, my canopy is 850mm high which I think is standard height for most dual cabs and standard trays. Cheers
@@jossandell oh sweet as thanks for that, did you make your tray headboard the same height as the canopy ? As my tray headboard is a lot higher than canopy. Awesome video btw. Cheers
@@isaactwigg I didn’t change my headboard on the tray. It’s the standard headboard but mine is also a little bit taller than the canopy. It’s 900mm high. I’ve since added some unistrut crossbars to the top of the canopy which now match the height of the headboard.
@@jossandell oh roger that ok sounds good cheers mate
Hi, just wondering did you respray those gold hooks that keep the pop top locked down, or did you buy new ones?
Hi there, we just resprayed our original hooks gold 🙂
Ok perfect, do you happen to remember what brand ?
@@melissakozaruk5363 the brand of paint? It was just a gold paint from Bunnings, I think it was the Squirts brand gold paint and prime spray paint 🙂
Did you find that the VJ panel made the roof heavier than before?
Yes it did make it a bit heavier. It’s only pine so it is quite light but it definitely added a bit of weight over the original 3mm ply ceiling.
@@jossandell ok !!
Hi, Just started watching the series from here in the UK. You’re doing a great job, it’s so attictive to watch! It’s amazing you’re working on a Millard, my mother lived in Sydney for a couple of years in the mid sixties and was friends with John and June Darlington who along with Johns father founded Millard! I think the factory was in Parramatta somewhere? I’m looking forward to watching the rest, I hope you enjoy using it! Bests, Jeff
Hi there, thank you for watching our build series! Glad you’re enjoying it 🙂 that’s such a cool story how crazy is that haha. We love our van and now that we have finished the lap of Aus we now take him away on weekend trips until we take off again one day. We love him! Enjoy the rest of the series and thanks again for tuning in 😊 All the best, Joss and Ell
Hows does that paint go with the stones damage? Oh i kept watching , you painted silver over the top of drawbar.?
Are you talking about the paint on the van or the paint on the drawbar? The paint on the van has held up really well. The front window shade did cop a fair few stone chips as did the drawbar but the drawbar paint actually held up not too bad. I will need to touch it back up at some stage though.
Hi im wondering how long and how many ppl did it take to replace the canvas ? I'm about to replace mine and wanting a rough time frame ?
Hi there, definitely allow a good few hours with an extra set of hands to replace it. My wife and I did it together and it is easier with a second person to help get it positioned correctly. If we could offer any advice it would be to start with the top and then finish with securing the bottom. We did it the opposite way and screwed the bottom in first and it made it difficult to get the top done. All the best with it!
Dose it even get cold enough to need heat there ? Serious question it's coming from a Canadian
Not as cold as Canada but we still get into the minuses here in Australia during winter in some regions. In the NSW high country we’ve camped in -5 degrees Celsius a few times.
@@jossandell I've camped in minus 30 lol I'd kill for your winters tho minus 5 is t-shirt weather

I’ll just follow your steps I been quoted 5 to 6g I think I can do it cheaper
just ordered the 2024 SR - looking at wildpeak tyres the same size that your runing - are happy with them
You won’t regret them mate. I’m still running those same set of tyres in that rig rundown video, 2 laps of Aus later and in 3000kms they will have done 100,000kms. I reckon they’ve still got a good 10-15,000kms left before they need replacing. They’ve been awesome.
@@jossandell Thank you
Why primer, you had base coat from the old paint?
We went back to the bare aluminium in places so we wanted the best adhesion with putting down a primer first 👍
@@jossandellit depends largely on the existing condition of the original paint, most of the time you only need to sand back the original coat and paint over that. Nice paint job by the way, looks awesome in that marine yellow.

Have you considered getting a filler piece to seal between the awning and the van.. the awning has a velcro strip that runs along the van
Yeah we have, we’ve thought about adding a sail track to the top of the van and making up a piece of material with sail track one side to slide into the van side and velcro to the awning on the other but haven’t got around to it
