The closing line is probably one of my favorite lyrics of all time, "Someday everything is gonna be different, when I paint that masterpiece". My life has been fairly average, nothing that bad and not much good either. Still, I feel like I'm fighting every step of the way to make something worthwhile happen. I know that every step forwards and backwards is painting something worth admiring on a canvas. I have hope that one day I can arrive at my destination and look back on my masterpiece that I've created.
Yeah for sure man, song resonates the same way for me...When yer closer to the end than the beginning you start thinking about that empty canvas we were born into this world with...Beautifully stated.
"I told Bob I had written some songs for the new Band album, but that we needed one more. I didn't go into too much detail but I implied that it was a bit rough going with the boys these days. He got it. He knew the chemistry of success and destruction in the rock 'n' roll world. He thought for a moment and said, "There's a tune, might be good for you guy's." He picked up my guitar and sang what he had so far on " When I Paint My Masterpiece." What a song! What an idea! I thought. I asked him if he wanted a coke from the small fridge I had in my studio, and he came up with a bridge, " Sailing around the world in a dirty gondola, oh, to be back in the land of Coca-Cola." I wrote down the words and the guys and I recorded the song the next day.
This is from "Testimony", Robbie (Jaime)'s autobiography. Wonderful book. If you've ever been in a band or even just LIKE music, you'll love this book, full of 'stories' of Robbie's life.
One of my favourite rhymes in all rock music. Almost on a par with Hal David's "pneumonia/never phone yer" and Joni's "figure skater/coffee percolator "
WoW that's Awesome Musical Genius, straight from Out of The Blue, Yeah Man yeah That's Bob Dylan, All Time Great For Sooooooooooo Many Years, Yeah 💯 MILLION

Levon didn't like being photographed, Garth was an introvert, Rick and Richard were drunk or stoned, so Robbie quietly took control, and they other guy didn't mind. Don't get me wrong Robbie did drugs as well, as he write in his books, none of us were angels.
I love the way the accordion drifts in out of nowhere and set up the theme. These five guys had so much talent and flexibility that it's hard to imagine that we will see their like again.
Dave Trejo Hey,bud, here’s another: Wah-Wah, George Harrison, The Concert for Bangladesh. You clearly have a proper appreciation for the finer things in life, so enjoy!
I absolutely love this song I sing it all the time . Watched the fireworks show this past 4th and when it was over we start back for the one and a half mile walk to get back to the car and I look down the road that is so grown over with weeds a road that I learned to drive on in the 60s but is now part of West Point lake so I start singing oh the streets of Rome are filled with rubble ancient footprints their everywhere Oh yea
The memories I can drift back to I wouldn't sell for all the gold hidden still in mother earth. Some things in life just can't be bought and sold And I consider those memories my friends My masterpiece
I remember playing this exact youtube video over and over when I was 15 in my small Texas town. Now I'm 27 and listening to it while walking by the Colluseum in Rome at night.

+J Danner He was even better on drums. I heard him in concert about two years before his death. He was as good a drummer as he was way back then. He just didn't have his voice anymore.
+J Danner It was. Levon only sang on two songs. Cancer left his voice sort of unreliable from night to night. But at one point he came off the drums to play the mandolin. For two songs, some kid in his 20's took over on drums. You could easily tell the difference. He wasn't the fraction of the drummer Levon was, even though Levon was half a century older than that kid. Levon still had that strong 3 beat.
Last night, as Mr. Helm was getting ready to go, in a bar in Harrisburg, PA, a young band from New York called Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds did a barn-burning, funked-up version of Up On Cripple Creek. They were young -- the lead singer could easily have been his youngest of many granddaughters -- and full of fire, and it brought a tear to my eye and hope to my heart that this wonderful music from this wonderful man is still here.
I've been in love with Levon's voice since The Weight. And have enjoyed his every vocal. SO earthy, rustic and so authentic. But this one. He nailed it. To the post. For all time. It'll be played at my funeral. A long time from now, but it is timeless.

The first time I heard this song, my jaw hit the floor...Garth Hudson knocked me for a loop. Such passion in his music. If I could play even a tenth as good as he does, I'd die content.
John's sentiments are mine precisely. And if ever someone was BORN to sing this exquisite song it was Levon. Beautiful. I want him singing it at my funeral.
You can want all you want, but you won't get Levon. He passed away in 2012.Maybe someone can karaoke him/this at your funeral. You won’t know the difference.
Nice to know this Masterpiece never goes out of style. the arrangement and lyrics are universal; I still get goosebumps listening to THAT melody, THOSE words, THAT arrangement of tones...! Actually Bob Dylan's own and Grateful Dead's cover are equally breathtaking measures of the beauty of this song belonging to all of us thanks to Bob's writing and musicianship and his fellow musicians' artful appreciation of his gifts.
This song has kept me going so much over the years in terms of my poetry and fiction writing. It has always helped me keep a buoyant spirit towards the future. Additionally, I've never been to Venice...but it seems to have that kind of feel to it...
There are a lot of great Dylan covers out there! But these four are the greatest of them all: All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix), Mr. Tambourine Man (The Byrds), It's All Over Now Baby Blue (Them) and When I Paint My Masterpiece (The Band).
Levon's dying... his wife posted on Face book that he's entering the final stages of his battle with cancer and is likely on his way out of this world. What a loss. I saw him several years ago at BB Kings and, while he only sang one, or two songs, the set was fantastic and I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to see this legendary artist.
Levon rocks in this song. The Band were the most talented and, imo, best American (north) Band ever. The Dead are a close second but nobody had three great singers like Levon, Rick Danko and R Manuel. God they were so good. I guess that’s why Dylan chose them as his Band.
Just saw the documentary, "once we were brothers". If you love THE BAND like I do, I highly recommend that you watch it. Brilliant history about these 5 wonderful musicians. The likes of we will never see again.
While I love so much of what The Band did, for some reason their version of When I Paint My Masterpiece just seems like the finest bit of music-making they ever did. Those hints of Continental flavor in Garth's accordion and Levon's mandolin, it just seems so, well, right.
It is one of their best songs. Takes me right back to when I first heard it like a hundred years ago. I listened to it by myself all the time, none of my friends thought it was anything special. That's just how how it is. Some people will connect with a band or a song instantly, you can't talk 'em into it. Some people couldn't handle Levon's vocals on this song, funny, cause the vocals make this song such a masterpiece. I was raving about Neil Young back at the same time, very early 70s, like Out on the Weekend was my Favorite Neil song from this same period in my life.
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble Ancient footprints are everywhere You can almost think that you're seein' double On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs Got to hurry on back to my hotel room Where I've got me a date with Botticelli's niece She promised that she'd be right there with me When I paint my masterpiece Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum Dodging lions and wastin' time Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see 'em Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory As the daylight hours do retreat Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody When I paint my masterpiece I left Rome and landed in Brussels With a picture of a tall oak tree by my side Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin' muscles Everyone was there but nobody tried to hide Newspapermen eating candy Had to be held down by big police Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent When I paint my masterpiece
This was the first song that got me into The Band; that and Levon's singing. Fell in love with their work there and then and that was 1973. Sure do miss those guys.
I know why their not everyone's up of tea, but to me, The Band, especially with their 2nd album (the brown one) is the best band America ever produced. I'd classify them as Civil War-rock, drawing inspiration from the backwoods of the South, with a dose of ironic sorcery direct from Bob Dylan. And a special shout out to Garth Hudson, whose organ mastery gave a whole symphonic dimension to their sound!
Yeah, except the are 4/5 CANADIAN........"The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group, originally consisting of four Canadians-Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, percussion, vocals)-and one American, Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals).
Alexander Ary agree that the brown album was brilliant, as were really all of here albums. Makes no Difference album was great. this must be the night is my favorite Christmas song, I played it for my kindergarten Sunday school class, it tells a beautiful story.
Canada existed and had a culture even during the American Civil War. Our cultural unity has been altered and forgotten in the world of Little Trudeau. It started when Big Trudeau encouraged Americans to flee northward rather than go to Vietnam. Jesse Winchester, my favorite male singer of all time, fell victim to that invitation. It didn't hurt his music but rather retarded his success. Memphis, New Orleans, or Nashville would have better supported his career, but Canada also understood him. Canada was, oddly, the birthplace of Cajun music, since the French passed through on their way to Louisiana. Read your history, my children.
Wow! There's no way our great masterpiece won't touch everyone who experiences it, like all of the never ending wonders around us. Stay safe everyone!🎯🤝🏾🖼🌊🤝🏾
High! My mom would use the word "cahoots" in casual conversation,,,,she being from New England.... now I know what it means.. May the good lord bless All of the Band and all of their followers... Amen......
When I sing this song I like to mix up the lyrics from the different Dylan and Band versions. For example, I like "where I got me a date with Botticelli's niece" better than "where I got me a date with a pretty little girl from Greece" but I prefer "on a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried" to "with picture of a tall oak tree by my side" and I *always* include the "sailed around the world on a dirty gondola" bridge.
This song always make me feel melancholy. Reminds me of running around with friends in school, those lazy days when you did nothing, and yet it meant everything. It feels like a place in time you can't go back to but, can look back fondly on and wonder where everyone is now.
certainly one of my favorite all time bands....they were all cream, absolute experts in what they did, that gelled together and producing absolute gold and the very best that music has to offer......a once in a lifetime band, that's for sure....dead or alive, i miss them all.
Robbie passed away on my birthday. The legend of The Band keeps on living, however... No more Stage Fright in the heaven. "I'd rather die happy than not die at all."
One of my all time favourates. Such a fine piece of music ... They were brilliant musicians! Go and watch the Scorsese documentary"The Last Waltz"! As Alex already said: Long live The Band!!
When You Tube was in its infancy ,hadn't been up a month or 2 I punched in THE BAND...nada nothing not 1 hit, my very 1st search on this upstart platform was my man Rory Gallagher and to you know there were 4-5 hits , well after a week or so tried the Band...after trying for a year or more they trickled in, and surfin whats to peruse, I am Blessed
Doesn’t happen often but that comment hit me right in the heart. Good luck on your journey friend.
Yeah for sure man, song resonates the same way for me...When yer closer to the end than the beginning you start thinking about that empty canvas we were born into this world with...Beautifully stated.

And I was there, too, screaming at Murray The K
Yelling rarely inspires confidence in change. Thankfully.
People of that time didn't know what they were doing. Yelling at Dylan for new, experimental, and awesome rock in the middle of his prime? Unthinkable. I also don't get all the screaming at the Beatles. Just ruin the show...
the accordion played by garth hudson has projected this piece into a masterpiece
Garth was perhaps one of the best musicians ever! He could play 2 different melodies on 2 instruments at the same time .Incredible.
Most underrated.. he was the soul of the band.

They look like a band of 1880's outlaws, minus the guns and horses. Love it

They wanted to be different. At that time pretty boy Jim Morrison (who I love, as well as the Doors) was a big thing. Robbie wanted The Band to be set apart from that, and the other guys agreed. Don't get me wrong Robbie did drugs as well, as he write in his books, none of us were angels.
100% beautiful and pure music, how could anyone not like these guys??
Pure art from Levon Helm. A part of me died with him. He will be missed !!!
I love the way the accordion drifts in out of nowhere and set up the theme. These five guys had so much talent and flexibility that it's hard to imagine that we will see their like again.
we never will and i cry to that
Fatboy G U ever hear of Vulfpeck and the fearless flyers?
Garth is unbelievable
This band was before my time but my dad introduced me. The talent is undeniable
Flexibility is the right term to describe this kind of wonder
Perhaps the best group of musicians ever assembled. Can't stand still when I listen. 🤘
The Band were such an amazing group of musicians. My favorite band of all time
And Little Feat.
Once again, Billions sends me searching for a brilliant piece of music.

God, how I love this song! The Band, Levon's singing, Dylan's writing and of course, the era itself are part of a great period in American music.
The new came.. the great sorrow. Mr. Robertson passed on 8.9.2023. May they paint in the heavens.peace and hope.8888 ❤

Best comment ever
Maybe not the best, but damn good one
plus one. they should'a ditched robbie.
This comment is your Magnum Opus.
@@briancarroll3541 Robbie was the lyricist, and one of the best, at that. The Band would not exist, as we know them, without Robbie Robertson.
I love this song! Nobody sings it like Levon
Never have five men gelled to the point of utter brilliance as these men did ,this is simply Equisite 👌🏻👌🏻
Just watched this weeks installment of Billions on Showtime. It ends with this version. Priceless.
GREAT SONG WITH A YOUNG LEVON SINGING IT. SO SAD WE ARE LOSING SO MANY OF THE BEST MUSICIANS FROM THE LATE 60'S AND 70'S.
Levon, you painted many masterpieces with your voice and drumming. Thanks for sharing them with us. Rest in peace.
Observe & Report reminded me of this gem. Oh sweet nostalgia.
Yea thats where i heard it too thought it was catchy so i looked it up.

The most optimistic song about hopelessness i ever heard. Beautiful
The memories I can drift back to I wouldn't sell for all the gold hidden still in mother earth.

I’m about to turn 26 and now i feel like i need to do this next year
Ah, think again, my friend. The Band made this song be the song it is. Those instruments and that voice! Wow!
Nobody else could play the drums so hard and sing so softly at the same time!
RIP Levon!
Levon was born to sing this song. In my opinion it WAS his masterpiece.

I guess that’s why Dylan chose them as his Band.
exactly
Just saw the documentary, "once we were brothers". If you love THE BAND like I do, I highly recommend that you watch it. Brilliant history about these 5 wonderful musicians. The likes of we will never see again.
That documentary was amazing. Absolutely first class !
The chords look simple but getting it just right rhythmically with the vocals is really, really hard.
Bob literally gave them this song and Made it theirs.
This slapped on Observe & Report 😂😭🔥
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble
Ancient footprints are everywhere
You can almost think that you're seein' double
On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs
Got to hurry on back to my hotel room
Where I've got me a date with Botticelli's niece
She promised that she'd be right there with me
When I paint my masterpiece
Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum
Dodging lions and wastin' time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see 'em
Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb
Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory
As the daylight hours do retreat
Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody
When I paint my masterpiece
I left Rome and landed in Brussels
With a picture of a tall oak tree by my side
Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin' muscles
Everyone was there but nobody tried to hide
Newspapermen eating candy
Had to be held down by big police
Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent
When I paint my masterpiece
The Band is named appropriately, just might be the best. Bob Dylan made more than just great music.
This was the first song that got me into The Band; that and Levon's singing. Fell in love with their work there and then and that was 1973. Sure do miss those guys.
The best live rock and roll band, ever. All La Glory.
Rarely do you see a musician or group of musicians cover a Dylan song with such beauty.
Well done The Band, well done.
I'm here in 2020. This song will be great in 3020. May The Band last for eternity.
The warmth of Levon Helm's voice, and mixed with Garth, Rick, Manual, and bob, it is surely the best song ever covered! My favorite band of all time!
"She promised, she'd be there with me. When I paint, my masterpiece."
I can't to grow old with my loved ones.
Wow. What a great Americana accordionist Garth Hudson is. You guys are were just great. Thank you!
Richard Manuel, drums, Garth Hudson, accordion, Levon Helm, mandolin, vocals, Robbie Robertson, guitar, Rick Danko, bass.
Yeah, except the are 4/5 CANADIAN........"The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group, originally consisting of four Canadians-Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, percussion, vocals)-and one American, Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals).
accept for the fact that they're all canadian accept levon
yea pissed me offhow robertson got all the credit anfd fame.. bullshit helm made the band..
I sing my 4 month old daughter to sleep with this side of cahoots religiously. Brings such a peace to us both. Love you guys.
The Band is one of my all time favorites
Wow! There's no way our great masterpiece won't touch everyone who experiences it, like all of the never ending wonders around us. Stay safe everyone!🎯🤝🏾🖼🌊🤝🏾
RIP Levon, Richard and Rick
High! My mom would use the word "cahoots" in casual conversation,,,,she being from New England.... now I know what it means.. May the good lord bless All of the Band and all of their followers... Amen......
Levon has such a perfect voice
I feel like this song is talkn bout death. Like the last brush stroke of his life and it's finished..... It's just beautiful.
Oh, it's all about YOU, isn't it?
WallyVanRiper1 lol
The cover picture of the Band brings back great memories. So bad ass! Miss those guys.
They took me from the pop bullshit in 1970 and changed me forever...
Heard this first my freshman year at WCU in 1970. Way up in the mountains, no computer,no phone, just a turntable and a few quality tunes. Perfect.
0:25 song starts. I can listen to this song for hours. I didn't know what this song was until I watched "Observe and Report".
It’s starts at 0:00
I too csme across this gem from that movie
Lmao I watched that move like 3 hours ago. Great movie
BoxierAcorn844 nope
I get from Dylan
This song always make me feel melancholy. Reminds me of running around with friends in school, those lazy days when you did nothing, and yet it meant everything. It feels like a place in time you can't go back to but, can look back fondly on and wonder where everyone is now.
what a great picture you can almost believe it was taken in the south during the civil war!!
Daniel Viola more like gettysburg
@HerrNilssonTheMonkey Plenty of country like this in the South, actually. Hills, not exactly mountains on the horizon.
certainly one of my favorite all time bands....they were all cream, absolute experts in what they did, that gelled together and producing absolute gold and the very best that music has to offer......a once in a lifetime band, that's for sure....dead or alive, i miss them all.
the greatest group
add ever
ever and ever will be
I was 17 when this was released and I never fell in love with this song until I listened to the accordion in it the accordion just knocks me out
Robbie passed away on my birthday.
