  • Originally designed in 1858 - then delayed by the U.S. Civil War - and completed in 1885, the Babcock Building served as the American south's largest psychiatric hospital for more than 50 years. Originally called the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum, the building was closed in 2001 and has since experienced a major roof fire, which will cost more than $400,000 to repair. The area surrounding this historic site is currently being demolished in order to build apartments.

I was there for three years until 1984. Im 63 now still bipolar (manic depresive) but serotonin uptake inhibitors -well its like its just a bad nemory. Ive graduated collage held steady decent jobs and i always remember the starkness and deadness of my soul in there. An empty dead husk in a place under a black hole sun. Defintly not mental health. More like the mebtal anguish of the abyss

It was so cool to see your video. I just learned of this place as SCETV did a little story on it post fire and it looks so different. It’s great you have this footage.

I just saw that on the news too. When higher ups want something out of the way it "mysteriously" happens. Just like in Clemson.

So wild! I wonder if he's right that someone mysteriously wanted it gone!

Me and my buddies used to sneak in at night while on acid or shrooms and explore or just be drinking and smoking and mess with security. Back in 2008-2011

Drove by this on a road trip way back not knowing the history, looked it up when I got back to the hotel and honestly, wow. Can't believe I've been here so many times yet haven't heard of this.

My great great grandmother was committed here for having a child out of wedlock. This would have been around 1900-1910ish. She died there in 1933.

Whoa, Hannah! That is awful! So glad that's not something of the norm still today. Hate to hear that your grandmother was locked away so long. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

This is incredible coverage. I came upon your channel while googling the asylum's name after watching the fire coverage from this morning. I wonder if it was accidentally set, or did the rioters deliberately cause the destruction.

Thank you, Tracey! We're thrilled that you enjoyed the footage. We've read that there were big players in the mix wanting that building wiped away; but they were opposed by those interested in the historical significance of the place. Was it just a simple accident which started the blaze or those big players using the protests as a guise to finally get what they want? In reality, we all will never know. Thank you for checking out our channel!

before the fires, i would sometimes drive here with one of my friends, and we would lean againts the wall in this area that was covered by trees completely and just draw things we saw. this could be anything from broken windows to just a random car passing by.
