This is probably the biggest hurdle for me, in terms of learning violin. I played guitar for a long time, but never had to learn to read music. I just need to find a way to memorize which dots equal which notes. I think those links should be helpful though, thanks.
I'm a bit confused regarding the position of each particular note on the actual violin though. I know I have the violin playing skills of a caveman right now, so forgive my ineptitude.

Thank you so much for the chart. I used it with a student who spent about half of her lessons in tears and saying how much she hated playing the violin. The first time I used your chart with her she had it sitting next to the music and focused for 8 whole measures looking at the music and figuring out where it was and the name of the note from your chart. When I left she was cuddling with her dad on the couch showing him the chart and explaining it all to him. She was so happy and proud and so was I! I am going to copy it for another student today. Thanks again!

Just another: THIS IS THE BEST EVER comment. This video and Alison's included pdf is so perfect, effective and simple. I may not pick up note reading as fast as some but I AM READING music. I downloaded Alison's graciously free pdf she suggested here and played the 4 notes on each of the 4 strings strings saying the notes out loud and humming each.... over and over and over and over.... There's no excuse why you cannot read music, and Alison has made this super easy for us. 😎

hello! i would like to thank you for these tutorials, as they have helped me a lot. i don’t even have a violin yet, but the one thats on the way is very cheap.. only $150 CAD. my parents kept a promise with me that if i learn how to play this violin, they will buy a better quality one. we do not have a lot of money, so i cant afford a teacher. you are helping me so much, it is unbelievable! music as a whole has helped me through rough times, especially classic music and now that i’m allowed to play it myself it fills me with so much joy! thank you so so much!

Nicely done! I came to violin much later in life than I probably could have but here's a point for anyone who cares to know... Playing a fretless instrument like violin is much easier if you have a history of playing a FRETTED stringed instrument. I have played guitar for over 30 years now and I dabbled with Mandolin before I got to the violin. That being said, I was delighted to find that violins are tuned the same as mandolins, so my learning curve was much less steep! That, coupled with the fact that violin strings are a reversal of guitar strings (the bottom four anyway...), made it quite easy for me to pick up on violin. Plus, I had a really great teacher and learned traditional Irish fiddle music and Scottish fiddle music rather than classical orchestral violin, but the notes are the same...
Thank you for your videos, they are an excellent source of information and inspiration! As such I will post a link to your video on my Facebook page:

I'm back in your videos again lol I first started to try and learn violin was 7 yrs ago and I used your videos as lessons. I tried hard and was super enthusiastic, but I think, since I bought a suuuuuper cheap violin, I always play out of key (I was still a student then and used my pocket money to buy it 🙃). The tuning pegs dont really stay in place when I tune it and when I play, it ends up getting more and more out of tune, so discouraged, I stopped. I had this thought that I shouldn't practice with an out of tune violin cause I might end up getting used to the out of tune sound and unconciously think that it's how it really is supposed to sound like. Fast forward to today, I have work and can afford to buy a decent violin. I kept pushing it off though since I thought I am too busy, too old to learn (I am 26), but I finally decided to give it a go again. Wish me luck, please 😭😭😭 I really want to play even just my favorite pieces as decently as possible 😭

Of course learning your scale's is important it is essential to know them and how it works. That's the key on how you can play with most instrument's

👏👌👍 Another great video Alison! I don't have a question just a comment. The only reason I learned to play the violin and neither the viola nor cello, for example, is because the violin plays in the treble clef, unlike the viola that plays in the alto clef, and the cello that plays in the bass clef. And that’s because I already learned to read and play music in the treble [G] clef along with all my other treble clef instruments. 😊 🎼 ♫

Hello, my name is Venus and I just subcribed to your channel.
I can see that these postings were from quite a long time ago- and I don't know if you are still monitoring your site.
This came up on my feed, and I am happy it did...
I was a 1st violinist and it's been awhile since reading sheet music- playing always made me happy. ( As I am sure all those that enjoy music in whatever manner or form does to them...)
    Thank you for posting & sharing...❤ V
