This was about the time we started losing all of our silent movie stars and to see Lillian being honored brought tears to my eyes. No modern actor or actress will ever be as big in my eyes and heart as Lillian Gish,Mary Pickford and the other silent legends .

I was very pleasantly surprised that they played an extended excerpt from “Night of the Hunter.”
She was superb in that movie.
And hearing Robert Mitchum pay his respects was also a treat.

and he was not one for Hollywood ceremonies. I don't thing there are many Mitchum speeches like this one out there.
He did seem to be slightly inebriated, but what he said was as much to the point, and as elegantly stated, as anything else said on that evening.

It's hard to believe that's from 40 years ago. This really was the end of Hollywood. I met both Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Lillian Gish at separate times. Fairbanks was really a charming and down to earth man and Ms. Gish seemed like she was from another century - very formal, but kind. Her speech at the end was perfect for today's situations.

You can see and feel the energy and life force being channeled by this frankly elderly (by age) woman who will never be old. She said it: "We're still children playing make believe" and she demonstrates it and carries it with her everywhere. I thank her for her life, her art, and for inspiring me to enthusiastically dive fully into life every day.

It’s so fitting that they used some of Carl Davis’s composition for the Hollywood documentary series in this. Lilian Gish was truly the last great spokeswoman for American silent cinema.

They did not give this award to Errol Flynn. He was the best of his generation and a really great actor.

I love near the end of her speech where she says We have a boogie man which is Russia and they have a bookie man which is America. Let Them Put It On Film And End The Discussion on That Way👍.She was a Lady of Great Words. And before talkies she talked with her expression on her face and eyes.Godbless you Lillian you will and always be my favourite silent screen idle. You are now gone since this honour to you but your not forgotten Godbless you Amen. 🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🦋🦋🦋🦋🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💖💖💖💖💖🕊💖🙏🕊🦋

I first saw this video on television back in 1984/85 in the Philippines!!! At that time I had no idea who Lillian Gish was !!! And then in the early 2000s, I saw another video about her entitled: "Lillian Gish: The Actor's Life for Me Trailer" !!! the video opened with the phrase - "She was there at the dawn of the movies" !!! Indeed !!! She was a pioneer of motion pictures and a great one at that !!!

The second video was actually entitled ""Lillian Gish: The Actor's Life for Me" !!!

It's astounding that over 50 years, the AFI Life Achievement has only been awarded to only 11 women (surely women are responsible for more than 22% of film's advancement as an art form): Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, Barbara Stanwyck, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton.Julie Andrews, Nicole Kidman.

Even more astounding that they are all white women.

may be men did more and were better at it, not getting the nod because they have a pair.

Nicole Kidman, are they kidding us? When the AFI has not yet recognized Glenn Close, Jodie Foster or Sally Field, to name but three worthy actresses!

You're right Ginger, it should've been Lillian instead of John Ford when the award was first given in 1973

They didn't give that life achievement award to John Wayne, to Robert Mitchum, to Burt Lancaster, to Bing Crosby, to Frank Sinatra, to Charlton Heston, to Charlie Chaplin, to Cary Grant, to Olivia de Havilland, to Jean Arthur, to Jean Simmons, to Maureen O'Hara, to Deborah Kerr... Next thing we knew was that is was given to some undeserved honorees like Steve Martin, Nicole Kidman, George Clooney...

Hanoi Jane. Ah well, that gives the game away doesn't it?
BTW Bing Crosby died when only Ford, Cagney, Welles, Wyler and Davis had received the award. If you think he deserved it over those titans you are a cinematic idiot. Apart from being a bitter old right-winger.
