My own (2001 Passat 1.8T) secondary air injection system failure was caused by a vacuum leak in the solenoid valve that controls the combi valve, which itself was carboned-up. Replacing combi and its control solenoid, plus the visibly deteriorated silicone hose connecting the two solved the problem. This is evidently not a particularly common failure mode for these systems, but I wanted to share it.
While obtaining knowledge to investigate my SAI issue, I realized the second I saw 6:38 , that I never reconnected that hose after I finished up the coolant phalange. *facepalm* thank you for going over the combi LOL
Great video man, very helpful and informative. I have the same P0411 code on my '05 GTI with the 1.8L turbo motor, AWP engine code which should be the same as the Jetta in the video. So far I've rebuilt my air pump with nuts and bolts after knocking out the old/damaged rivets (noise seemed to diminish at startup though only 2 rivets were bad) and I found a torn S.A.I. hose under the intake manifold on that bracket. I patched it with tubing from A.Z. but the code came back. I now want to check my combi valve but was wondering where you hooked up your vacuum pump? I'm having a hard time removing it in order to clean it with carb cleaner, so after watching your video I figured I would confirm it's working on the car. I bought a similar Mighty vac vacuum pump from Harbor Freight a couple of weeks ago, but I don't have a copy of Vagcom or other diagnostic scan tools like you used in the video, just a cheap Bluetooth OBDII reader with the torque pro app.
09 may be a little bit different basically the same system but the switching valve may be electronic and it also may have a secondary air pressure sensor
Hi as soon I heard the air pump run I knew that the pump was leaking I usually repaired them with long thin bolts with nylon lock nuts woks great way cheaper than a new pump.
I open my air pump i add some black silicone and add a bolt and nuts. I tide well and bingo stop leaking. 🤷♂️ save me couple 💵. After 500 miles still working like a champ 😉
Also, have noticed that the small radiator fan will not operate with the AC switch on. The fan has operated when temp called for it. That was part of the reason that I thought the J299 module failed.
Do you perhaps know why the relay when shorted clicks but the pump Does not turn on, when on a cold start the pump works audibly? Does the car have to be in Gear or something?
On the vacuum line portion the comb Valve. Newer vehicles have an electronically controlled valve so there would be no vacuum pump needed. The solenoid would need to be commanded open
I have a 2007 Jetta 2.5 and I can't get the secondary or primary EVAP to complete for inspection. Checked the secondary air pump and it powers up. I checked the two relays, J299 and ECU, 100amp. Completed a smoke test and fixed a few EVAP leaks too. The car runs great. Have driven for over 500 miles and EVAP system still shows incomplete. Any idea? Thank you for your time.
Thanks for the reply. I have a VAG401 scanner and a Actron scanner. The VAG401 pulled 9766 and the Actron pulled 2626, O2 sensor, which I replaced 4 weeks ago with a Bosch original equipment 17480 O2 sensor. The check engine never came back on after replacement. I have changed the purge solenoid, gas cap, and the PVC diaphragm. The secondary air pump did have a little air leaking around the gasket area, which I resealed. The air pump it self seems to power up ok when I jumped it with 12V. The two EVAP emission blocks just won't show complete. Thank again.
VAG401 unit I have is limited to what I can do. I did a block 71 test and from what I could understand it said EVAP was ok. Not sure what the numbers were or mean. I think one was 105%, another was 42% and the last one was 56%. But when I go to readiness it still shows the two EVAP's as incomplete. It has me confused a little. Thank again.
How do you test the secondary air injection relay? It works off of voltage from the computer, not from the battery. What is the polarity and voltage of the relay input terminals? I think the input terminals are 1 and 2, and the output terminals are 3 and 5.
Great video. I subscribed and liked. I had a question though. So my hose from my SAI pump that goes upward to the engine I think to the combo valve... That hose snapped all down the middle. I taped it up and put it back on. I've been to all the parts stores and none of them have the SAI pump hose and actually turns out they cannot even order one period. I'm going to scrap yard tomorrow but do you know who else would I be able to buy a new one?
My secondary pump wont start..possible causes? In the morning at cold start, i can see the car interion light dim for a sec, several times..as if its trying to energise the pump..but nothning happens..could it be the egr/combi valve?? BTW i own a New Beetle 1.8T 2001.
Hi. Thanks for the info. When I try to ground relay, I get a very dim light and pump does not turn on. Does this mean pump or wiring is bad or could it possibly be relay?
Hi I have code saying secondary air injector insufficient flow.... did head gasket but a friend snapped a hose that runs from the kombi valve down to what I believe is that SAI. Just that simple hose breaking would throw the code right? I don't have fancy tools to test things but I know the hose is broken, that's for sure!
We had a guy with audi a4 get a tsb from usa dealer to change the diverter valve to prevent condensation from egr building up in air pump but still did not fix.
I've heard of the cylinder head ports clogging up with carbon Never had one with condensation. When you say diverted valve do you mean the secondary air switching valve
looks like this pretty sure this was called a diverter valve back then www.amazon.com/Check-Valve-Combi-Passat-Touareg/dp/B010B0MMDQ?tag=vs-auto-insert-amazon-20

Great video you were very clear in all the steps to take. Thanks again.

Cool test had one come in on Wednesday
you are a genius this helped so much
Great!!!! Thanks for sharing.. My big brother owns a 2009-GTI

I have seen that before. Much cheaper.
Thank you! Very helpful
Well done indeed sir!
I open my air pump i add some black silicone and add a bolt and nuts. I tide well and bingo stop leaking. 🤷♂️ save me couple 💵. After 500 miles still working like a champ 😉
Ok thanks, what numbers should I be looking for on the scan tool. Not sure this tool will perform those tests, but will give it a try. Thanks
Thanks for share☺☺
I'm glad you enjoyed it

Question, where did you connect the manual vacuum pump to the combo valve?
On the vacuum line portion the comb Valve. Newer vehicles have an electronically controlled valve so there would be no vacuum pump needed. The solenoid would need to be commanded open
Great great great vid]

Do you have a vagcom? You may need to run the monitors using basic settings.
Any faults?

77 should be secondary air. But you need to run 34 first that's for the front o2. Do 34, 77, and 71

Hi i have a 03 golf gti turbo with the same code problem but the car p0411 code on 03 golf gti not start. What other thing may cause it?
How does the p0411 code affect the car? Other than smog or cold start areas. What else would I notice wrong? Aka is it worth fixing?
All you would notice is a check engine light. And you would not be able to pass emissions.
Have u ever done it on a 07 Jetta 2.5?

It might be a part you can only get from the dealer
I had to replace mine on my 1.8T got the replacement hose from
m.eeuroparts.com/Parts/PartResult.php?search=secondary+air+hose

Could be a faulty pump. Faulty pump relay. No control to the relay or Power or ground to the pump
i found some watter in the hoses..not much..just drops. Thats why i asked about the egr. Cause in the morning it burns much moisture
Hi. Thanks for the info. When I try to ground relay, I get a very dim light and pump does not turn on. Does this mean pump or wiring is bad or could it possibly be relay?
I got 2002 jetta my drain the battery on 24 hours you never have the problems ???
Hi guys can anyone help,I got a golf 4 1.6sr there's a backfire from the intake ,what cud be the issue
Have you ever popped timing belt?
Hi there I managed to resolve the issue , I took out the throttle and cleaned it in and out put it bk n it's bk to normal
Que pasa si no ahi corriente

Absolutely. That hose being broken will definitely cause that fault.
Positive Lead Diagnostics having hard time getting hands on the part should I order online somewhere🤔or what do you think
Any dealer close to you? I guess if you have no other options check online. Get a part number off the old one that may help you in your search
Cylinder 2 misfire yea don't worry about those other ones lmao
The misfire fault was intermittent and there was no misfire happening. The purpose of the video was for the secondary air
makes a change that its not to filled with water!!
you had one filled with water?
yes seen loads they build up condensation and die
We had a guy with audi a4 get a tsb from usa dealer to change the diverter valve to prevent condensation from egr building up in air pump but still did not fix.

hm..i thought that the air pump relay energizes both the air pump and the solenoid..killing two birds with one stone
