  • The secondary air injection pump can often leak on VW and Audi 1.8T engines. The leaking of this pump or other bad components in the secondary air system may result in fault code P0411.
    This video was filmed on a 2001 Jetta with a 1.8T engine and we used this pump to replace the VW part number 078-906-601-M

    YOU DO NOT need to change the pump when its leaking. Just drill out the rivets and replace with a nut and bolt in each bracket. this will pull the pump together and get a better seal.

    Today my mk4 vr6 was diagnosed and my mechanic told me I needed a new MAF sensor, a Throttle body, and a new secondary air injection pump. In a nut shell they wanted a lot of money just to fix it. But after seeing your videos I feel like I could probably do these myself. Thanks!

    Good tips, but I would suggest the following if you have trouble getting to the upper pump bracket bolt. I found it easier to put the front of the car in the service position, you will have more room to get to the upper bolt from above.

    Hello All!
    So, I strongly recommend not taking out the 8mm Allens, but have Hydraulic Fluid available and disconnect the Power steering line instead of the recommended loosening of the pump bracket. Way easier and faster. The power steering will not be mad at you for taking the line off and refilling after. Way easier way better!

      +Deutsche Auto Parts I don't remember, this was over a year ago. The parts are identical, colors on the outer tie-rods and ball joints and the brackets. I'll email the pictures and boxes and packaging, I'm almost positive I saved the outer tie-rods boxes because I didn't need them, they were new from the previous owner. I remember googling and seeing a lot of good reviews and that's the only reason I got all those parts I didn't need, stronger bushings. The oil return line website was different, it was blue but the checkout was very similar with the option for the high performance gaskets.

      Check your coil pack harnesses. Since the coil wires on a 1.8t sit on top of the valve cover, they tend to get hot and eventually become very brittle. I had the same issue and it turned out that my grounding wire had broken loose from the terminal and the insulation had cracked. Used electrical tape to re-cover the exposed wire and put on a new terminal. Problem solved.

    Yeah I’ll tell yall right now this shit was not as easy as old buddy makes it out to be. One bolt is easy to get off the point bracket. Then another one is a pain in the ass, but the one you really need up at the top is impossible to get to without tearing up the original air pump. Removing the power steeering line to offer more clearance, but not enough where you don’t have to undo the mounting bracket. It overall took me 8 hours, 4 hours one day, 4 hours the next. Some bullshit

    What if your output test ends with a Abort status....what does that mean? Is there a problem with the system? The pump sounds like it runs. Can an issue with the secondary air system cause a rich running condition? I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8t AWM that's running -25% lambda (rich) at idle...could the secondary air system contribute to this issue? I read an Audi bulletin that says a leak on the pressure side of the intake could contribute to the rich condition.

    Tip for anyone doing this at home on axle stands - don't bother trying to remove the bracket allen bolts. Power steering fluid is CHEAP - just remove the power steering hose. Will save you a load of time and effort. It's still tricky to get out and back in but it's much better than messing with the bracket.

    • @tylertyler82
      @tylertyler82 8 років тому

      +Suj Power steering fluid is cheap? Last time I checked it's around $25. Even if it took you an hour to get the pump off, that would be $25/ hour worth of work you would be saving.

    • @suj1945
      @suj1945 8 років тому +1

      tylertyler82 Yeah - it's not gonna take an hour. You will spend all day trying to get that top bracket bolt out - and the following 2 days trying to get that bolt back in. Yeah you could mess about trying to loosen it to swing the bracket if you can manage it. I'm in the UK - but even if I were where you are I'd rather pull the PS hose and pay the $25 - or if you want to do it on the cheap, re-use the fluid you caught out of the hose. Considering the repair doesn't cost anything - $25 for the fluid is still cheap to get the job done.

    • @tylertyler82
      @tylertyler82 8 років тому +1

      +Suj I ended up doing this project today, I just drilled out the rivets and replaced with bolts, fixed the whirring loud vacuum noise! Good call on removing the power steering hoses- I didn't even need to buy new fluid. I drained it into a clean bucket and put the fluid back in the reservoir after everything was done (I just flushed the fluid a few months ago so no need to replace with new fluid!) Took one look at those allen bracket bolts and said f- that!

      Not really. The SAI system has one function: Warm up the catalytic converter faster so the engine can go into "closed loop" operation faster. Unless you are taking very short trips and not getting the engine up to temperature, it's affect on your MPG is minimal. Those who live in area with smog tests have to worry about the SAI system to keep the code from occurring.

      @@angulo3047 I replaced it myself but it should not be more than 50 bucks to get your air pump replaced

    Would have been helpful to show the N112. You mention it in the video but I can't see to what you're referring. Thanks for posting though!

      On my B5.5 Passat, the N112 valve is on a plate mounted to the underside of the intake manifold. The "combi" valve is on the rear of the cylinder head. Don't know where it is on the Jetta.

    Fuck this pump. I cannot get the larger air hose off the pump. Been at it for nearly an hour. I understand there are two clip points that secure the hose. I'm using 3 or 4 flatheads to pry and hold and nothing.

      No, not at all. You can get around it by purchasing any vehicle made prior to the implementation of OBD2.

    Now can this cause my 2011 gti to bog down and throw the EPC light for a few seconds?

    • @Mekazas
      @Mekazas 5 років тому

      No sir, this component is just for emission control. The EPC light in my 2010 Jetta came on and I took it to my volkswagon dealer. They told my my engine was beyond repair. That cost me about 7 grand for a rebuilt engine, 3 grand of which was labor.
