Absolutely agree. I mixed a small show a couple of years ago on a system that comprised Studiomaster GX12 speakers, with a Behringer iNuke amp and a Soundcraft EPM6; which I think is a great little mixer for it's price. A bit of EQ to sort out the shoutiness of Piezo tweeters in the speakers and I was all set. It sounded pretty good for a sub-£400 system. Sure; it wouldn't hold a candle to a decent rig, but I had to use what was there and got it to sound as good as I could, which turned out to be pretty good.

Not even just that it's possible to make a cheap driver sound great with experience but entry level gear opens up a world to those who are from poorer backgrounds. By this guys logic unless you are running a void or funktion one rig there's no point of adding sub. Even adding more dynamic range by adding a bigger driver makes for a new experience. Learn how to work your crossovers and eq. A loudspeaker isn't going to hold the 30 to 60hz range as well unless its loaded with at 18 inch driver. But even then you'd have that on a stand so the highs and mids are at the right room spacing level therefore less sub is resonating the venue resulting in you guessed it. A need for a subwoofer.

when it comes to add subs to a PA, I think in terms of adding clarity to the sound by splitting the signal in different loudspeakers, to make each of them work less stressed, and by supressing intermodulation distortion. Once that done, is easy to make all the system give its best. If you haven´t been able to get a cleaner and punchier sound even with the use of some entry-level subs, perhaps the cut frequencies were not correctly selected for the different venues, or the level were not correctly set. I asume you have always checked not to have any phase cancellation. My experience comes from 30 years playing gigs as a drummer, and the same amount of time working as a part-time sound technician (I wouldn´t dare to consider my self an "enginer")

Man so many on here upset because someone else have a different opinion than theirs. This is Rick's take on beginner subs, take it for what it is.
Rick, I can see the angle you are going with this. A better investment would be to purchase a pair of some higher quality 15" tops. Those will generate enough bass for what the beginner DJ needs. Besides, a beginner DJ will only have so much funds to start and having good tops will be better than a set of mediocre tops plus a beginner sub. On another note, a beginner DJ will more likely be limited to doing house parties/bday parties for friends and family. A living room, garage, or small yard will not really require subs when you have nice above average tops. Keep doing you Rick, I like your content.

A sub won't add "a little bit" of bass. In Pro Audio applications for medium or big (but even small) venues a subwoofer is necessary, even decent speakers won't go low enough or loud enough, especially for DJ use where electronic music is the most used.
Also, 12" subs are a great starting point, you can find them for cheap and some brands make them small and light for portable use. Even a single or a pair of 12" sub will greatly improve the overall bass reproduction of your system.
650 dollars is not a cheap price to pay for beginner subwoofers, it's not a beginner price at all, you're already buying something from Mackie, DB, RCF, JBL, EV and others for that price way past entry level.
I don't even know why you would sell and get something even more expensive than that, better off adding another one or even get a complete 3 or 4 front stack of subs.
Again, buying expensive top speakers won't solve the problem, especially if you mount them on stands, that way you really lose that deep punch subs add.
Finally, there's not "Beginner DJ Subwoofer", a PA Sub is a sub, no matter what. Unless of course you buy Skytec china junk full of lights lol.
Edit: Basically, you have no clue of what you're talking about.

Rick, no! Bad advise. Actually, if you are a struggling DJ and you own entry level speakers, such as Mackies, JBL EONs or whatever, getting a sub or two at a good price will increase your sound level. Which helps your tops work less hard. Even the cheapest subs make a difference. Truth be told, most DJs don't like to take subwoofers because they are big, bulky and yes, heavy - I call those DJs plain lazy, since they don't care about the sound, only about making money - but, subs do make a big difference. I try not to use subs outdoors for house parties but definitely at all indoor venues. Folded-horn subs are made for out-door use and front-firing subs are made for indoor use. If you have a nice pair of 15 inch full range speakers, with a MINIMUM of 300 watt RMS continuous (1000w Peak) then you can probably take care of an event with 50 guests without a subwoofer, but anything else you need subs. Rick, I don't have a problem selling powered subs, but I do have a hard time selling non-powered passive subwoofers - it's based on demand and where you advertise them.

Depends on your venue, crowd size, and budget. When I booked a 150 person karaoke gig , but had no PA (and no money to invest/rent), I used my Behringer Studio monitors (185w each) and bought a used $60 infinty home theater sub (350w). Along with a cheap Alesis mixer & a Shure beta58 I grabbed from my home studio, I was able to run a decent show, and made $500 to put towards better gear. #YGDWYGD
Always buy cheaper gear used, never spend $600 on a cheap sub. buy a $300 alto/behringer on offerup/craigslist for $125, test carefully before buying, always keep it below max so you don't damage it, then when you upgrade, either resell it for the same money or keep as a back up.

As long as you know how to dile in the gear you can get enjoyable sound outa a soupcan if u so wish.
For the most part even some hobby DJing the gear I talked about we own works fine.
I will say though it could use a better head later down the road as money comes available to improve it perhaps

I dont know if this Brand is a thing in the USA but "The Box" is really popular in Germany. The Box TA18 you can get for under 400€ and I can get two of them in my Car. They are really powerfull and add a lot of Bass, even Outdoor.
Also the Resale Value is quite good 10 year old TA18's still go for around 250€.

In my opinion, if you're mixing or playing music, you need at least two subwoofers in order to achieve good low frequency spread and consistency. If for any reason, you consider that the low frequencies are not good enough you should consider adding more low frequency drivers to what you already have and daisy chain them. It is important to ensure that the low frequency drivers are able to play the low end frequency spectrum, between 30 Hz and 100 Hz, at consistent levels, set the crossover frequency correctly in order to avoid cancellations and position the loudspeakers for good coverage and linearity. At the end, most importantly, pay close attention to the gain stage process in order to help the tops and subs system to deliver the full rated power.

As far as carrying them around..get a dolly or a hand truck...the ones that collapse and fold up in your car. Im not a beginner by far, but looked for an economical way to get back into the DJ business....and found solutions to tempting to turn down as far as price and durability...go Rockville

I tested Behringer's top of the line 18 inch subwoofer and I am telling you, contrary to common and unjustifiable rumors about Behringer, the items I have used from Behringer have worked extremely well (no I am not being paid to promote Behringer ~ just giving my honest, hands on experience). Such that I purchased another one ... certainly not out of need, but I just wanted a second one. Keep in mind, I have many decades dealing with Electro-voice 18 woofers, Crown power amplifiers, and DBX electronic crossovers ~ so I have a pretty good feel when it comes to powerful, reliable, and effective equipment. Behringer's top of the line 18 inch powered subwoofer is the real deal! Their mixers are pretty good too. Of the Behringer items I have purchased, I am sure they will do better than most competitors on the market. Try for yourself.

In response to a couple of you. I still agree with Rick. I have owned several of the entry-level subwoofers 15 inch and 18 inch and specifically The ones he is talking about in this video. Yes I will agree they do add bass and in some cases with certain rooms they do work OK. But even after running QSC and EV subs I run exclusively JBL 718 and 818 XLF series subs. In my small business which is about 30 or so weddings a year I have found that they outperform everything in most all rooms. If you are Sirius or think you might be serious about being in the DJ business bite the bullet and buy the top-of-the-line stuff. Most all of it is bulletproof and will last a very long time. Believe me at some point in time you’ll want to upgrade that stuff and it will have been money wasted

There are 2 other options I don't think that weren't explored with this video that should be mentioned. One, keep your entry-level subwoofer and mains as a backup rig. This way, if for any reason your primary rig is down, you have a working setup that can be used to carry on. The 2nd option would be for expansion. You could hire on and train another DJ to work with you. Expanding the number of gigs you can accept. Or in a similar vein, sell the complete system to a new DJ in your area. This is why local DJ networks are important.

    a few remarks:
    1) if you buy PA loudspeakers and try to sell them even after a few gigs you end up loosing roughly 50% of money no matter if it is amateur or pro stuff anyway, because nobody knows what kind of abuse the speakers have been undergoing in their first life.
    2) the big advantage of that is: if you know what you are talking about and take a good look you can buy pre-owned pro equipment even in extremely good condition for almost 50% less almost all of the time!
    3) more important than “pro” or “beginners” equipment is “pro knowledge”. If you are using top quality tops you can easily combine them with not so top quality subs, because the ears are way less picky in the low end.
i bought very easy to transport active Yamaha tops for 330,-€ a pair, fixed the tweeters with original parts for 50,-€, bought speaker stands for 20,-€ that were second hand but never used, combined it with a used Behringer B1800D for 260,-€ …
… and have an absolutely pro sounding system for weddings and stuff for a total of around 700,-€ including cables!
Wasting money on brand new pro equipment as a beginner would bother me more than buying beginners equipment if you are a pro and know what you are doing!

Prx and Ekx series are the best series for a beginner looking to take things to a whole new level in years to come. Please don't consider QSC. PRX and EKX are not beginner speakers but they are the most affordable speakers you can get if you're trying to go pro in the future. Squeeze your pockets a bit more while you're starting because it'll be harder to do so in the future trust me. Especially if you're going to be buying some lights and stuff.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing... In an ideal world we would all like to buy the best available, however most of us shop for the best we can afford. Not only that, the best may not be the best for you. There is little point spending lots on a quality subwoofer that will never see it's full potential. Much better to hire a few different ones and hear which one sounds best for you. As some others have commented, price is not always a good indication of quality or suitability.

Subwoofers are only needed at bigger events, if you're doing house party, backyard party, out door event or small Gathering in a banquet room then you don't need a subwoofer. If you are doing big events like a big wedding at a grand ballroom or a promoted public event in a hall or gym then yes you will need a subwoofer to add that extra Bass and compliment your tops. Always check the size of the location and you may get an idea of what to take. Sometimes a subwoofer is overkill.

the used speaker market is bad for ANY speaker- people don't want ragged out used stuff, especially subs, since they've already had a hard life.

Depends on what your gigs are, I guess. A 12" powered sub isn't going to rock a club or outdoor festival but I can DJ indoor weddings all day long. I've done up to 300 person weddings outdoors as well. Just set your system up right in relation to the dance floor and absolutely no one will complain about your bass for these kinds of gigs. I've definitely made my money back many times over without killing my back - plus my whole system with lights will fit into a Hyundai Elantra.
Plus, when I'm not gigging it integrates into my home theater flawlessly. Full disclosure - my B1200D-Pro did recently suffer an unknown electrical problem and won't power up after three years of use. If I can't fix it, I'll rewire it into a passive subwoofer. Problem solved.

I got my mom the rockville 12 powered sub for her birthday now I am tempted to go and buy my self a pair of the 10s to pair with my alto 8" tops and put in my surround system.
The 10s go for very little used and Id love to some day find a good deal on a cheap behringer one
I had the behringer ultratone 10" pa/keyboard amp and that thing kicked ass and lasted me about 10 years or so until it developed an audio problem

Call me old school. I try to stay away from powered speakers. I've been djing for 20 plus years and I still stick with buying nonpowered speakers and rack mountable amps. I've used both high end and low end speakers with this type of set up and had no issues. My personal opinion stear away from powered speakers if you want a heavier duty speaker. The powered internals of it seem to have issues in the long run.

There is NOTHING that will beat a solid rackmount amp setup and a quality speaker.s You have way more control of the adjustments of the sound (near you) and there is only one cable to run to each speaker. My weapons of choice are the QSC GX series amps paired to Yamaha Concert Series speakers and custom made subs w/ eminence drivers. My setup will blow anything powered and comparable in size - straight out of the water. Party on!

What do you think of the EV ELX-200? I've listened to that and the EKX 18. I like the punchier bass of the ELX a lot more.

I haven't heard the ex. But suposably the components in the elx sub are the same as the ones in the ekx.... just a different cabinet.

Excellent analysis on beginner subwoofers....better to rent a "top of the line" subwoofer than to buy a cheap beginner subwoofer....Electro Voice makes a nice subwoofer....rent one for your next gig......see for yourself....Thanks again Rick!!

    Hello there.
interesting video because i'm like you i strongly don't recommend to buy budget sub-woofers, cheap, muddy sloppy etc....
I recommend to buy the KS112 for a "beginner" sub-woofer.

hang on I have most behringer stuff sound wise and your saying that the equipment i have is beginner well i disagree. Have a look at my Facebook page @geckobar55 quite honestly they are perfect for what i do and i do have like few other people a van to transport the equipment. the subs i have or VP1800s yes they are 400 rms but only if you know how to use them they work damn well but i do agree on is the weight.

great pair of subs that i have perfect for medium to large rooms only because of the size and weight. the weight is a bit of an issue though if you have any medical conditions regarding lifting heavy stuff these are not the subs you need. each come in at 41kg ( per sub ) must admit i don't often use mine but if you do get a pair make sure you have minimal stuff to make a great impression. hope this helps

honestly it has lots of bass it is a passive speaker it weighs in at 100 pound for 279 dollars it is well worth the money I am getting ready to buy more of them I do a lot of outdoor events and I want to get more of them be aware 18's throw a long distance if you want sgorter throw 15' would be your best bet.

I just sold my 18 inch jbl prx sub because it's a hassle to transport and set up. Most of the clients don't care whether you have a sub or not. You can do most of the events with only tops. Don't waste your money on subs. Rent them if the client needs subs. If you really want that low end then buy 12 inch subs because they are easy to transport.

this (and dj Barr's review of the DRM line) swayed me away from buying heavy beginner subs. the EV might not be louder but it sho is lighter which is definitely worth the price.

I agree that for example L-ACOUSTICS KS28 can shake the earth and my pants :D but it also cost fortune :) so not all of us can afford expensive sub. One option is to make DYI sub on some good speakers (like Beyma, B&C, Faital Pro or Eminence) and buy some PA class-D amp. My friend made such pair (101dB efficiency, 1kW RMS each) for 1k$ both.
