That end sting that you played Necromunda and liked it, as a Necromunda fan I want to hear more about that. I love it because the campaign setting of Necromunda feels like playing an RPG with your friends in the underhive with your gang leveling up, getting better kit, taking lasting injuries, and perma death...and because it's got that RPG slant to it and there are so many unique rules to things like falling off ledges or being set on fire weird things happen and you're excited to have them happen even if it's bad for you.

The detail you're missing is that the ultimate starter is 2 combat patrols, 2 of the boards ( Combat patrol size ) and terrain enough for ComPat, 2 player Combat Patrol game in a box. Literally the ultimate way to start playing 10th as a new player which is what it's for!
Yeah I see many YT content creators giving the wrong advice about the starter boxes. The 'regular' starter looks cool until you do the math on the boxes. Starter + needed minis to make it in a combat patrol is 20 dollar cheaper than the Ultimate BUT the ultimate gives you the boards you need to play (instead of glossy paper mat) and some terrain (which actually retails for quite a penny on the GW website). That being said: I really dislike the terrain they chose lol. The old terrain was much cooler :P
Jay, I really like your assessment that the Tyranids “win on points” because looking at the army and watching it play, even a dominant victory by Victory Points through securing objectives, at the end of the game there were hundreds of points of Tyranids less than space marines if you just look at the board it looked like Space Marines won handily but they actually got crushed because they couldn’t secure any objectives until the final battle round and the points were so far gone at that point there is no way to come back. It kinda fits the lore too, sure that first wave got mostly killed, but they completed the objectives necessary to guarantee the hive fleet will win that war. The defenses have been weakened and the Tyranids have won. Which leads me to my final point: a lot of people are booing Battleshock and thus the Tyranids army rule along with it but if the whole goal of the Tyranids is to win a Phyrric victory through objective points, then one or two key units failing a battleshock and loosing CP can change the hands of critical objectives at key moments and let the Tyranids pull out clutch victories. I think their a good army both thematically and in the game.
The Imperial Assassins are really cool looking sculpts. Even cooler, when painted as well as you did with that one. Glad you've been getting in some games, to raise your enthusiasm for the new Tryanid range. Gotta finish my Space Marine army, so I play,as well. Keep up the great work you do with your models and the terrain via your Patreon, Jay.
Your first Vindicare assassin painting video was actually what inspired me to start painting 40k again, really fun video and my first model back was the new Vindicare
Jay - I never comment but I just wanted to say that I look forward to Models and Memories every week, and knowing you have the next episode live gets me through my Fridays at work ❤ please don’t ever stop being you! Love EOB content!
The Escher are right fiddly little feckers to paint, I love 'em now that they are done, but they were a bit of a pain in the posterior. I got the original Eschers for my birthday as a kid, but I guess I gave them away to a younger cousin at some point (which is where all of my old minis went). I'll probably buy a set of the old ones again one day.
I have been working 12 hour days and I drive 45 minutes to work so when I wake up I get about 30 to 40 minutes to do whatever I want and I gladly spend it watching these videos
I actually think the command edition terrain is way better. Although I like having fewer large units in a starter kit since you can play boarding patrol or normal 40K
I'd like to see what you could do with the Introductory Set using just the paints and brush included in the set. Also, grats on finally trying out Necromunda. I was pretty sure you would like it.
These store exclusives seem to be a popular thing right now. Catalyst Games Lab released several exclusive figure sets for Battletech including a couple through Barnes & Noble and an alternate starter box through Target.
I bought all three of the Boardgames from Thalia, the German online store. With discount code and free shipping I paid 24,99€ for each game. 75€ for the gaunts (and ripper swarm), Titus, All of the BSF stuff including the ambull and two underworld warbands sounds pretty good to me. 🎉
One thing that’s important to consider about a starter set for games workshop is that it is very rarely designed with a current games workshop fan in mind. They are almost exclusively geared towards new hobbyists or people who have never Warhammer-ed. That being said if two Homies went in on the small starter and the large starter then they would both have a sizable force and even paint / hobby tools so it kind of seems super good (for n3wbz).
I grabbed the midrange starter for about £55 in Britain from a 3rd party, add on the models I can buy separately that are in the Ultimate Starter, and it adds up to around 100. Still bloody cheaper than buying the ultimate starter directly from GW, and I don't need the terrain or extra stuff with it so I saved a fair amount 😅
I would suggest getting the umbral six vindicare assassin. He’s a blast to paint and is a great model. He can also be used on board because he is the same size.
It's annoying that only the ultimate starter set comes with that mini rulebook. That thing should be included in as many products as possible - I don't need anything else in that box, but it's tempting to buy it only for that book, and selling the rest...
210 US dollars for the ultimate? I live in sweden and at my local game store i payed 1400 sek for the ultimate, thats like 134,77 USD. (1 USD = 10,38 sek). So even though i don't really need much from the ultimate box, becouse over here thats a no brainer take my money. 210 dollars though yes i totaly agree with you! note official GW store price the ultimate at 1500 sek, the starter 780 sek, and the intro at 480 sek. (144, USD, 75 USD and 46 USD in current exchange rate). I like the terrain though. I have a lot of MDF terrain and some older ruins from GW, and the terrain in the ultimate box will add to that, will blend well with the rest of my terrain and add something "new".
Barnes and Noble sells a different version of combat arena right now! Thought it only has four minis for $35 USD. Since this new one has more minis probably looking mor elike $60.
Back in the early 90s, most of the minis were metal, and plastic kits were pretty shoddy and kind of rare. I didn't know about nippers, so I would push all of the pieces off the sprue with my hands. Modern people don't know how difficult it was to learn about the hobby back then.
The Infernus Marine sprue in my Leviathan Box already had sign of leaking and had some really annoying connection points. They don't seem like a good introductory representation of model quality.
james i just wanted to let you know i love your channel every time i need inspiration i come to your channel and it’s fantastic keep up the good work!!
Tyrannofexes are a great shout they can wipe most of those orc squads if you plop them in the middle with the acid sprayer and then you add in a hive tyrant that thing and the psychofage would be terrifying
Trygon wasn't super good in previous edition, but I still love the moment where I deep strike an enormous monster and my opponent's face starts to show concern
I love to play a thematic Jormungadr list. Last edition, I’d spend 2cp for Subterranean assault and buried in wait so I could deep strike the tyrgon, a squad of warriors or gants, and a brood of carnifexes. It was so satisfying.
Wait Jay, I know it's very expensive in a 1000pts game, but have you considered a callidus? So you can make "Reinforcements" cost 3cp and cripple him for the rest of the gamr
Went to the Post Office this weekend and came across the collectors Warhammer stamps, took everything I have not to buy them, I must go back without my wife.
Eh, I'll still tell newbies that the Ultimate Starter is the better deal, mostly because it gets you Combat Patrol forces right out of the box. And you can easily split the terrain as it comes with two [Kill Team] boards and two terrain pieces.
You are 100% right. The ultimate starter is the best deal. If you need to add the extra minis to the starter to make it combat patrols you pay more or less 20 dollar less that the ultimate costs you. So essentially for 20 bucks you get full core rules vs starter rules, 2 terrain boards and the Fronteris Bunker + stockades. Heck if you don't like the terrain pieces and ebay them for like 40 dollar you are even doing a profit this way.

By that Tyrannofex being 5% of your 1000 pt army, you mean 20%....right? I think you divided that 10% (200 pts of 2000 pt total) by 2 instead of multiplying by 2 😅

@@soullord246 You'd think that but you are wrong. Any existing players though, honestly shouldn't really bother with these boxes as there are still enough Leviathan boxes to be found. (assuming you like nids or marines even)
