Multiplatinum-selling artist Isaac Hayes, dubbed “Black Moses” during the height of his popularity, revolutionized soul music, leading it out of the era of the three-minute single into a new area-the orchestrated concept album with (very) extended cuts.
Hayes began his career as a pianist and staff writer for Stax Records, and, alongside songwriting partner David Porter, wrote some of the biggest hits of the 1960’s, including “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Comin’” for Sam & Dave.
Expanding his repertoire, Hayes penned the iconic soundtrack for 1971’s Shaft. The album became Hayes’s fourth consecutive platinum LP and the “Theme from Shaft” earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Though often known for his larger than life persona, Hayes’ musical accomplishments - which laid the groundwork for disco and rap - established him as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

I am. Song rings true to this day.
THIS IS THE ANTHEM OF EVERY HOOD WORLDWIDE!, RECITED BLACK MOSES!!!!
shit was rough growing up in chicago in the 70's my parents wasn't around i grew up with different family members and it was rough for me cause i had two little sisters that i had to be a big brother to. there was plenty of nights where i didn't even eat but i made sure my sisters ate. my father was in and out of jail and my mother was a school teacher but i never spent time with her i lived with my aunt and uncle and sometimes my grandmother house. shit was rough for me but i kept the faith and got my education and gone on to be the best father i can be to my kids me and my sisters move to florida and now i'm doing very good now and i made a way so my kids didn't have to endure what i went thru every time i hear this song i cry cause of the shit i went thru from 1972 to 1977 but i'm a big man now and living better
God Bless you brother. We all have had our trials. I remember being 80 cents in my pocket, the rent is due, and I had 3 weeks of pay COMING! I was lucky I had a mother who loved me. She wired me 100 bucks. the next day, I had about 2400 dollars worth of pay in the mail. Back in 1977. A very hard year for me.
@@bobs806 wow
I'm proud of you; you've earned your Angel wings.
Amen 🙏🏿👍🏿🙏🏿
god bless you
"Tryin to ditch reality, by getting so high, only to find out, you can never touch the sky."
I heard this song in 1971 and the lyrics sounds as though it was yesterday. What a bitter pill.
My dad just made me listen to this song.. this is exactly what is happening in 2024 😮
*RIP Richard Roundtree* ✊🏾🕊️
*RIP Isaac Hayes* 🕊️✊🏾
*#Soulsville*
RIP Richard Roundtree. Great soundtrack and movie, RIP Isaac Hayes. Watching Shaft now, brings back many memories.
Seeing so many negative things increasing during the Covid-19, I thought of this song. Past due rent, kids needing shoes, buildings falling apart... These lyrics are everlasting. I thought things were crazy in the 70's, Crazier in the 2020's with so many robberies, shootings and murders and hatred. God keep all safe.
Praying for you and the one's living paycheck to paycheck and in those rough neighborhoods.🙏🙏🙏
Str8 🔥
What a great song written by the genius Mr Isaac Hayes!
Black Moses is preaching to us..Trust in the Lord, He will make a way..
Amen brother 🙏
Soulsville. A rough place to live and try to make it. But yet a beautiful place that we call home or grew up in and called it home once before. Soulsville. ✊🏿💯❤️
I was a kid when this movie came out and could not see it without an adult . I heard this song two nights ago and it woke me out of my sleep. Shaft was on Turner Classic Movies. I saw it from where this song was playing until the end. It was Tuesday November 8,2022 the Federal Holiday for Voting. I stayed up and watched it. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again. GOD bless us all and keep us safe.
I was a kid back then to. I remember the promo on the radio. If you're under 16 you better ask yo mama !!
One of the most important songs ever. No hyperbole. This is it man
This is my mother's favorite song i like to hear her sing this song while we're cleaning up the house
YESSSSSSS....LOVE THIS & THE LYRICS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯
A great hit by the Genius of Isaac Hayes. Every song on the Shaft Album was a classic. They don't make LP's like that anymore. Pure soul pure music.
WAS truly amazing to hear this once again .MY older brother had the RECORD CAN YOU DIG IT?MEMORIES OF BETTER TIMES WHEN HE WAS STILL WITH US.
Like alot of young people back in '71 or '72 , I bought this album ( 8-track version!) for the badasss theme song, only to discover absolute gems like this . After a while I wouldn't even listen to the first track, I'd just go right to "Soulsville" or "Bumbly's Blues".
Yup that's the effect 😊
This song reaches deep in my soul trust in the Lord children our time will come
When I hear this song, it reminds me of Aretha Franklin’s Never Loved A Man(The Way I Love You). The way the beat goes.
Ikrrrrrr 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Definitely can hear it in the chorus. Ironically she was born in Memphis never was on Stax and raised in Detroit yet was never on Motown!!!
I Remember My Dad Playing This Song when i was a little Girl,I tried my best to thank of the name of it and who sangs it all i knew was a couple of the lyrics.Until one night I looked at Shaft and I heard some of the Lyrics ...Omg outta sight I found the song.😊😍😍
One if the best tracks on this album. If you wanna see Shaft, you betta ask yo mama.
Absolutely true my mama taught me

Undoutedly one of the best all time total music. Wish the entire Universe could pay special attention. Ile was a Legend in his time. Fair thew well Brother
Black man, born free,
at least that's the way it's supposed to be;
the chains that bind him are hard to see,
unless you take this walk with me
The place where he lives, God, he gives them names
slums, getaway Black belt, they are one and the same
and I call it Soulsville
Any kind of job is hard to find,
that means an increase in the welfare line,
the crime rate is rising too, but
If you are hungry, what would you do?
The rent is two months past due,
in a building that's falling apart,
little boy needs a new pair of shoes
and this is only a part of Soulsville
Some of the brothers' got plenty of cash,
tricks on the corner is going to see to that,
some like to smoke and some like to blow,
some are even strung out on a fifty-dollar Jones
Some are trying to ditch reality,
by getting so, high,
only to find out, you can never touch the sky,
'cause your roots are in Soulsville, oh yeah
Every Sunday morning,
I can hear the old sisters say
"Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
trust in the Lord to make a way, oh yeah
I hope that He hears their prayers,
'cause deep in their souls they believe,
someday He'll put an end to all this misery
that we have in Soulsville, oh yeah, yeah
Soulsville, hum, Soulsville...
written by Isaac Hayes
Still don't know why Stax never released this as a single. Would have been #1 without a doubt.
Abbott Cooper true I love this song
Yeah, that was I huge miss. I love soul and funk in general and the Stax catalog particularly, and this may be the single greatest recording they ever put out.
True
This is a true song when will a black man ever be free tell it like it is Isaac Hayes
Isaac THE MAN
I love the scene in the movie when this song comes on. Shaft was cool as a mf could be back then. Classic as it gets! The 70s were epic ✊🏾
This song was released way back in 1971 and it spoke nothing but truth about the Black experience in this country...fast forward 52 years and a lot of it is still very much real, stop and think about that for a minute.
i moved from my native home (Memphis) one year ago. if you ever visit Memphis, take the Stax museum tour. its truly important. my fav track, time is tight- booker T & the MG's
I recently visited Memphis back in June and I also visited the Stax Museum and I really enjoyed it and overall the whole trip was a blast!!!
A classic soundtrack by Isaac Hayes... 1971.... & than another great soundtrack came out the following year "Super Fly" soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield....
This is so real and true!
Especially right now!
THIS SONG IS WHAT THIS EVERDAY 🌎
My favorite cut on the album...Still relevant to this day....
Felt this with every word, beat and instrument. CLASSIC GREATNESS
Classic Soul 🔥
Pain in every note... great voice and song, but so sad. RIP Isaac, pure class buddy!
Some of us actually live in soul ville today and that's really sad
True that
This may be the single greatest recording of all the great (legendarily so frankly) recordings to come out of the Stax studio, which was located where else but the Soulsville USA neighborhood of Memphis Tennessee. It's a museum now and worth visiting. This song is heartrending, brutally honest, and utterly beautiful, and listening to it feels like magic. Love and respect to all the good people who live/lived in the kind of harsh reality it portrays and still come good and do right by themselves and others!
So true. I feel it every time I hear it plays.
Isaac Hayes -The true meaning of SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU DIG IT, BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!1
A 70s phrase yet cool
I KIN DIG IT!
Mr Jeremy God bless you! Although we all have our trials, some turn into marathons like yours did, luckily, being a world class athlete, you overcame and finished the race in first place! I came from a broken home as well and lost my Mom at an early age. I'm thankful that my sisters and I all overcame our hardships to become upright contributing members of society. Your story is an absolute testament to your will and determination. You have my utmost respect and admiration Sir.
One of the Great Songs back in the day and still fits this time. Issac Hayes and the his band was Great. Classic!!

Real Talk,
Now with my lyrics I am picking up the torch !
My songs are real . I totally refuse to write songs that glorify drugs, going to prison, rape and all the other stupidity that many artist promote.
My new album release August 24th 2018
“ Fighting Against Rapist Murderers and Kidnappers” are only samples what’s to come. Isaac Hayes was real . He spoke truth in his songs. So do I in mine. And I don’t have to use profanity in my lyrics. Keep it clean for all to hear. Maybe just maybe I will be instrumental in preventing some one’s life being taken, I will accomplished my goal.
I guess you can say ( like Django. ) I am that
1 Out of 10,0000 artist to truly
KEEP it Real !
My album release in over 200 digital stores, 100 countries worldwide.
Oh yeah, spread the word about my new album if you like !

Back in the day baby, Back In The Day!
"some are trying to ditch reality with a $50 high/only to find out you can never touch the sky." ike was deep, no doubt.
Truth b told👍🏿
MR ISAAC HAYES 'THE BLACK MOSES' THE MAN KNOWS TRUE MEANING OF THE STREETS THIS OLD SCHOOL MUSIC BABY
WHERE MY BLUNT
Tragically describes many Black men of this day.
Time for all to get it all together.
Thanks !
This is why I wrote this new album. No Bulljive, only Real Talk.
“Fighting Against Rapist Murderers and Kidnappers “
Our people need to hear songs that support our families. Not songs that glorify drugs.
Not glorify murder of our people or any other people. Not glorifying going to prison.
Ain’t nothing cute about none of that nonsense. Check Out my new album release.
Maybe just maybe, one of my songs help “ someone live a better way of life.
Yes, even if I never make a dime. As long as I know that I helped someone. Real Talk.
I like talking 70's slang. Right on.
Righteous.
Don't jive me man
I love this song! It’s message is true especially today! Dig?
Black man, born free. At least the way it's supposed to be. Chains that bind him, are hard to see unless you take this walk with me.
Leatha Young Perfectly phrased😉🙄💁🙌
That’s Isaac Hayes - Soulsville, Robert! I imagine he sung from his experiences.

I am a fan of his
I was thinking about this Album. Its a sad Album but it tells the truth about Black American history. This is so sad. But, its our history.
Might get some hate for this but I’ll say it anyway, I think this is Isaacs best song. Then look of love and shaft theme
Huey Lewis and the News did a excellent tribute to Soulsville and Issac Hayes I think you'll dig it...
situations then, and now, will they ever end?
still hav this ♥
Memphis Finest! From Blewfoot...
I was but a small blk ghetto child when this song came out in the 70s...
no consciousness nor awareness of the opposition, brutality, disdainment, discontent, unfairness, lack of justice, prejudice, biasness, racism (systematic and outright) the evils that one day I'd learn and witness.
all because I was painted a beautiful, darker shade, and hue.
NO...
innocent and blind was I to the wiles of man's mind, his heart,...
and the extent of which he harbors and conjures up within the two...
Ignorant was I at that stage in my life that I didn't know the history that had been perpetuated against those who looked like me,...
(nor at the time, inconceivably the potential future, and what would/could later come to be)
... the trauma, drama, terror, torture and pain,...
not only by forces outside of my village,
BUT sometimes... within,...
inside of my own village it rains.
(yea, sometimes that door swings both ways, evil knows no color, as well as no bounds)
Yet, through my innocence,
and ignorance...
this song had struck a deep resounding chord in my soul.
I remember hearing it all the time,
it stuck with me,
sometimes even haunting me...
it resonated,...
struck and inspired something deep within me,...
until that day,
that time,
and those moments...
collaborated,...
culminated....
into that, that would eventually mature my visual,...
my psyche,
and I began to understand the strong, but subtle lure,
the stretch of the pull,
and the true meaning of, and behind this song...
NOW...
50+ yrs later,...
and I'm still walking down the streets of SOULSVILLE,
tho the scenery has drastically changed,
the color sometimes completely drained...
now I'm the mayor of my Soulsville,...
and that ignorance and innocence 🤔...
it's been long since distorted, altered, battered, and shattered...
NOW, NOT ONLY AWARE....
BUT, I'M INCREASEDLY, CAUTIOUSLY AWARE...
ON GUARD...
LOCKED, LOADED and AT THE READY...
But SOMEWHERE...
in the far off distance,
in the shadows,...
I can still faintly hear the voices of the ol'chuuuch sistas souls sangin',...
"HALLELUJAH... HALLELUJAH... TRUST IN THE LORD, HE'LL MAKE A WAY"...
DEEP
PROFOUND
POWERFUL and
TRUTH...
✊🙌🤲💪🤝👁👀🙏🤎🖤
classic baby !!

The hard street on
The house i live in drugs documentary brought me here 😢
You do not get to Soulsville on the Soul Train.
2 cold 2.xplain.
heeeyyy 🤔🤔
1971 Shaft brought you here? ;)
Had the Album, sold my collection. Kinda miss.
Wow... I imagine this is from the "Ultimate Isaac Hayes/Can You Dig It?" CD collection, but the Stax/Enterprise/Concord double LP vinyl reissue that I have (that is currently available and has the black Enterprise label on the records) sounds WAY better than this. In fact, there are even much better CD versions, I think. The "Greatest Hit Singles" disc might be my favorite CD collection of his, but the "Shaft" soundtrack SACD (Super Audio CD) is supposed to be quite-good (and should decimate the "Ultimate/Can You Dig It?" set in terms of the "Shaft" tunes. Just to get an idea of how good this song in particular can sound, Check out MrVinylObsessive's needledrop of it, which I think is taken from a vinyl reissue with the same mastering as the one I have. Sounds A LOT better than the CD version here.
Al mckay on the scene............no name bar......cafe regions.......
Great song this. And I'm a white guy.
result :-) ★★★★★
huey lewis soulville
Shaft 2000: Samuel L. Jackson playing Shaft? Good movie, just should have changed the title.
Richard Roundtree is the only Shaft, canyadiget?
One n only 😊
I remember the sexy Richard Roundtree walking through Harlem NYC as Black Private Detective John Shaft, he was a bad mother, shut yo mouth.
