Pick up exclusive collectible items, plus music from your favorite Stax artists and legends. Multiplatinum-selling artist Isaac Hayes, dubbed “Black Moses” during the height of his popularity, revolutionized soul music, leading it out of the era of the three-minute single into a new area-the orchestrated concept album with (very) extended cuts.
Hayes began his career as a pianist and staff writer for Stax Records, and, alongside songwriting partner David Porter, wrote some of the biggest hits of the 1960’s, including “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Comin’” for Sam & Dave.
Expanding his repertoire, Hayes penned the iconic soundtrack for 1971’s Shaft. The album became Hayes’s fourth consecutive platinum LP and the “Theme from Shaft” earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Though often known for his larger than life persona, Hayes’ musical accomplishments - which laid the groundwork for disco and rap - established him as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

who's still listening to this song in 2024? I am. My favorite part is 3:35 and on when the horns really start kicking in!
The guitar is what wears me out! You talk about playing...😫 Absolutely Love It!
Me at this moment August,2024
Am I the only one that thinks that this song NEVER AGES?!?!
B side of shaft !
no...
Agreed 💯👍
I am 76 yrs old. This is one of my all time favorites!
Same here. Classic cut
The soundtrack of my life. 52 years later and it sounds as fresh today as ever! It’s 6 and a half minutes of foot tapping feel good music and in a true jazz guitar tone! RIP Isaac Hayes!
So true, foot tapping and body swaying 💃💃💓💓
5th March 2023...Yeah Man...
I agree with you 100 percent. This was and still is a stone, cold jam. Thank you Isaac Hayes.
Reminds me of Wes Montgomery.
I went to Oklahoma University from the Fall of 1971 till the Fall of 1972. I would stop at the Student Union building for lunch and to kill time between classes. Before I left the building, I would do my best to see that this song played. It was, and still is, one of my all time favorite songs, as is the movie from which it came.
RIP Richard Roundtree. You will be sorely missed.
One of the best songs Isaac Hayes ever composed!
one of the best songs anyone ever composed
Most definitely! He'll I just found out he wrote never gonna say goodbye. All this time I thought it was the jackson 5.
Perfection
Agreed. Classic and ageless.
@@aabowens Incorrect. It was Clifton Davis who wrote "Never Can Say Goodbye." He wrote it for the Diana Ross and The Supremes, but Berry Gordy suggested him to give the song to the Jackson 5. Then Issac Hayes did the cover of the song. Strange but true.
Great song. Timeless composition. Excuse me for changing the subject. Today is: October 26,2023. Richard Roundtree passed away a few days ago. When I hear this music, I think of the movie Shaft. That music 🎶🎵🎶🎵 score from that movie is incredible. I still have my shaft album. R.I.P. Richard Roundtree.
Yes, 💯 a masterpiece 💕
My brother, Joseph, played this EVERY morning. He passed away 5 years ago today. Good morning Bro!!
I live in NYC and whenever I walk past Caffe Reggio I can't help humming this song
Thought like all great NYC landmarks, it had closed..Great to read!
I bought this album and watch the movie when it came out in 1971. The entire album is great in so many ways: Orchestration, arrangements, singing, lyrics, soloing ETC< ETC< ETC. I still have the original album. I wore the crap out of it!!! NO AUTOTUNE, NO MUSIC MIDI CHORD PACKS, NO LOOPS! Real music with real musicians. I'm so glad I lived during this time as a teen and young adult. Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Thom Bell, Burt Bacharach, The Bee Gees and many more! The 70's was the best decade for me HANDS DOWN!
Same here. Saw the movie in the theater, next day bought the album. I played trombone in the high school jazz band, so I just had to buy the album that I played non stop for months. I still have it on my phone and listen to it all the time along with some Benson and Wes. Cheers to good taste.
@@j.w.matney8390 Where in the heck did you get that ringtone for your phone? I want it!!!
WHEN I HEAR THIS SONG,IT MAKES ME WISH I WAS CHILLIN AT A CAFE LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW WATCHING CARS AND PEOPLE WALK BY ON A SUNNY DAY
Great thought
Me too...sipping on a espresso
I get dressed to this every day. Its classic " lets get it" music
@@williamwashington4534 I HEAR YA. I HEAR YA!!
Yes
I'm 19 , but I bet I'm one of the only kids my age that was introduced to good music by my parents
This is it! While driving down the highway on a bright sunny morning.
Now ya talking ❤
This song was way ahead of it's time. Can't believe it's authentic instruments. Beautiful composition. Still sounds fresh. My tears are rolling down, thank God for such a beautiful track. Takes me on a sweet journey. Kirk Ashley from CT, South Africa
This is music.
REALLLLLLLL MUSIC 🎶 THE BEST ⭐❤
This Album stood the test of time, it was Groovy then & it's still Groovy now, this session is outta sight.
Outta sight indeed grooviest ❤
Now this is REAL music!!! Thank goodness I was grew up in an era of real musicians and in a place where you had to have actual talent to make it in the music industry!!! Now, it's all about looks, auto-tune crap!!! Not to mention mumble rap, which is pure nonsense!!! I miss this type of music!!! RIP Isaac Hayes, aka Black Moses

@@alankirkby465 I did alan 👀 it what u said was true
Now, I consider myself a man of dam good taste. Food, Fine women, clothes, etc. And this song is a Great Masterpiece. As great as all the other songs on this sound track. Boy! They'll never make music like this ever again. Anybody else that agrees with this... Holla back. I'm 62 and I know what I'm talking about. Hey Y'all b cool. Later. ✌️
I had collected all of Issac's albums "Hot Buttered Soul" etc. But "Shaft" really got him the recognition he deserved. And to me it is rare that a double-album would have so many good songs, but this one did.
The guitar reminds me of Wes Montgomery.
I always think of George Benson
It does sound like Wes Montgomery playing!!
Smooth jazz even before there was smooth jazz.. Way ahead of it's time...
I grew up listening to Wes Montgomery with my dad. He once told me that this song reminded him of Wes. This is my favorite Isaac Hayes song!
So True me as well listening with my Dad Yep!
That's what I was thinking listening to this. It's the great guitar tone that Wes had.
he does !! 😎

Isaac told the guitarist to play like Wes on this song.
Michael Toles of the Bar Ksys is the lead guitarist on this masterpiece. Such a great composition, score and arrangement by Hayes and Johnny Allen. History should remember these stellar musicians!
Is it Toles or Skip Pitts?
Toles
This is one of the G.O.A.T tunes to ever b recorded as far as I'm concerned. And I am a man of great taste in music, clothes, cars etc. May I.H. r.i.p. Thank you for one of the best songs I ever heard. R.R. R.I.P. Can u dig it? Right on. Later Y'all. ✌️
WHAT A MASTERPIECE INDEED! (😱)
Classic Sunday 🏠 cleaning 🧹🧼
This was the flip to the Theme from Shaft when it was released as a 7" single. Not too shabby for a b-side !
Cooooollll! Wish "Cafe Regio's" was real. Best track on "Shaft".
Lol! Cafe Regio's is real. It's still located in its same location in the Village where they filmed that great scene between John Shaft & the Italian mob hit man.
Real, since 1940s in the village
Without a doubt. I love 3.00 to 3.17.
My dad played this album so much ..now a lover of jazz til the end
Right On !
My dad as well! 😃

@Vincent Strother word
I had this album as a young teenager in 1970. Still love it today. And I'm British. Love jazz too!!! Cheers 😊
This never gets old..
Never!
Music is Eternal❤❤❤❤
I believe so too Sistah ❤
This whole Shaft album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥. RIHP 🙏 to the legendary musician, Oscar winner (best score) and composer Issac Hayes and to legendary actor Richard Roundtree aka John Shaft who recently just passed away. Also to the legendary Gordon Parks who directed the movie Shaft. All 3 are gone, but never forgotten!
My mom loved this album. RIP mom.
STILL MY JAM! My dad used play in the 70s - still love it at 53 years old!
54 and I totally know what you mean x
67 and know what u mean
That's exactly my experience too. My dad used to act like he was conducting the orchestra with one hand with the other hand on the steering wheel of our old green Fiat on long distance trips.
I still anticipate the fade-out/fade-in at in the middle of this track (4:10 mark) because that's how it was on the 8-Track tape we had.
One of the best movie soundtracks ever!
So soothing to the mind, body and soul taking away any pain that you maybe experiencing, its like the Angels from Heaven playing this tune to you with Joy, Peace and Happiness. Thank you Mr. Issac (Black Moses) Hayes for letting us into your Cafe Regios for a musical taste of your legacy RIH bro, you're missed but not forgotten!!
Excellently said! RIP Mr. Issac Hayes never forgotten -
@@gwendolynbeckwith1419Amen, Amen 2 that! 👍
Best movie soundtrack album
Damn right!!!
Rest in life, Richard Roundtree😢😢😢
That wes Montgomery was a bad jazz man himself because this is his spin right here.
Sir Issac might have re mastered it but it's Mr.wes Montgomery's spin. Too show you how this song beguiled me because I have not heard this song in years but I was glad to hear it so as I strolled down the texing, there are a great deal of ppl know about some Wes Montgomery
Road Song
Isaac Hayes is my all time favorite songwriter, composer, Singer but he was never Knighted Sir. That's a British title. Many people are saying that because Miles Davis's son put Sir Miles Davis on his head stone. He was never Knighted.
TO ERIC - CAFE REGIOS IS REAL AND IT IS A KOOOOL PLACE - LET YOUR MIND RELAX AND GO IN. I DO!!!!!
I need to go there!! 👍👍
One of the best pieces of music ever composed and conducted.
This is a timeless relaxation, motivation, uplifting, energizing, clean-yo-house,
CLASSIC SONG,
That bass line is 🔥 too
Rest in peace forever Mr. Richard Roundtree 💖 Your performance in the movie Shaft, this scene, and this beautiful song was and will always be magical ✨💫✨
This Album is a winner! I like the entire Album actually! I'm 45 and I remember my Mom playing this song while growing up and I enjoyed it 😊
What a composer/musician.
Timeless Sound
Absolutely beautiful the rhythm guitar, the horns, the rim shoot on the snare drum, the call and response with the horns, the string arrangement all combine to create a visual of sitting in a café on a beautiful day with a beautiful woman. very well recorded
Why didn't this awesome guitar player become as well known as Wes Montgomery or George Benson? He was as good as them both. Isn't this brother Michael Toles? If so, then I call your attention to another guitar dominated piece by Isaac Hayes called Driving In The Sun. It is just as cold blooded as Cafe Regio. Michael is the same guitar player. I'm just saying, the man should be a household name.
"😱"
The album won the Grammy for best recording in 1971. Yeah, HiFi!
Today's pop music lacks all the sophistication.
Is that a Tambourine?
I was 14 , bought this album when new at a mall in New Orleans. What's amazing, I came to appreciate it more as I got older!
Same here.. so very beautiful.
Me too.
I was driving home yesterday and this came on Hampton Institute’s jazz station…. Wow! Took me back 50 years ago…… Priceless!
Give Me This And The Theme From Shaft All Day Long BEST JAZZ EVER!!! BLACK MOSES
I REMEMBER THE ACADEMY AWARDS WHEN ISAAC HAYES
PERFORMED!!!
Right now tonight at 10:41 pm July 7 2024, I am having my first meal ever at Cafe Reggio. I saw this movie with my sister in the summer of 1971. Sadly, I couldn't get the people who work here to play it for me. They are playing some kind of music that sounds like church music.
After all these years, this groove still hits the spot. Love the call an response between the brass and woodwinds during the final vamp. Not to mention the energy in the rhythm section and the guitar just ripping over the top.
Yes Craig Hopper, that's a great description of this great song by the superbly talented Hayes, who left us way too soon! Love the energy and how the pace picks up at the end. My brother is a guitar player and I can appreciate that.

Time less it is beautiful . He left us music part of his genius.
I saw Isaac Hayes’ band open their concert at The Airie Crown Theatre in McCormick Place Chicago with this song. Great! Timeless!
THIS is one of the many tracks heard while shooting pool at my godfathers' club in the early 70's!!!!

A timeless piece of music/composition from the creative 🎶 music maestro himself Isaac Hayes. That whole album (Shaft) the soundtrack is just incredible. The "Shaft" movie 🎥 soundtrack ranks up there with all the other great soundtracks past and present. Excuse me for changing the subject. R.I.P. Richard Roundtree. And to Isaac Hayes you left the world 🌎 an incredible catalog of GREAT music 🎵🎶.

So rich, and with tangible depth...! Compared to now, I feel like I miss beautiful '70s & '80s music more and more!
