- Some of the last surviving veterans of the D-Day landings have arrived in France for the 80th anniversary commemorations.
Four of the veterans returned to Sword Beach, one of the landing areas for the invasion, evoking emotional memories of the comrades they lost.
The D-Day landings were the largest military naval, air and land operation ever attempted and signalled the beginning of the end of World War II.

My 96 yr old patient fought there. He was a Sergeant. Rest in Peace, John.
He must of been very young….
07 to his service. We can pay the debt we owe them but we can remember them.
@@markdaniels2200 he was still in command at his age💙
@@VSFilly He was the same age or possibly younger than my father.. He must have been a very responsible young man…👍❤️..
Thanks for sharing. RIP
My dad served in the RAF.at 18 years old. Passed away at 93. Great generation. 🙏
07 to him for his service. Heroes never truly die for they will live forever in our memories.
They were not a great generation. THEY WERE THE GREATEST!
@President-JonSnow.Malkowich Yes they were. My dad served in the 15th Aiir Force, 450th Bombbardment - B24 bombers. He was stationed in North Africa and then Italy after they were liberated.
Hats off to these heroes!
These men and ladies are true heroes unlike the so called "heroes" of today.
If someone scores a goal or a batsman scores 100 runs when in an international game they are considered to be heroes!!
If
God Bless these brave men. We will never forget your sacrifices 😢
This may be the last of all these great soldiers. Lest they NEVER be forgotten!
It's incredible how the 100 year old man looks and speaks and remembers just like he was 78 years old, but he was born a century ago!
I am In awe at the bravery of these men . Hero's plain and simple.❤
God Bless them...one and all. What they did saved the World. We must never forget their service....
The war was over by that time.
@jrobertsoneff no it wasn't.
The world was saved by the Soviet Union.
The Greatest Generation. Never Forget ❤❤❤
Ive been crying all morning...these wonderful old boys have given us everything. Im so grateful. Lest We Forget
Canadian immigrant. I was extremely lucky to have met several WW2 vets in my community. Speaking with them and hearing their stories helped me understand the sacrifices made by those hailing from my adoptive homeland. It’s disappointing to see that people in my country celebrate ideological left wing holidays more than important events like D Day.
Men Of Men our gratitude in our nation for these Men and Women must never be forgotten an indeed many other Nations, so few left now ,we must never stop educating our own future generations ❤️
For 100 years old, he looks exceptional!
Sad to think that we might have no one left anymore in the next five years.
I'm 21 but barely every had the opportunity to interact with someone who lived through these times.
It is a very strange feeling.
When I was little they where all in their 80s and now most of them are gone.
Slowly but surely we're growing ever more disconnected from this part of our recent history.
We owe so much to these men and women who served so bravely.....God Bless.
hats of to these glorious men who protected us
I'm amazed Sky News even bothered to report this Remarkable event of all our lives!!
God Bless all our Men and Woman who gave us ALL our FREEDOMS and way of life, we ALL take advantage of TODAY 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
I wish my great grandfather could of gone but he passed
Nice 👍🏽 to see people remembering the past
They must be all turning in their graves of what has happened to Europe and Britain, they were the best generation💯
Well said 👏
Definitely! They were brave and stood their ground unlike today
Exactly the point I made, too, but sky (or youtube) muted my comment.
The same here in Australia. Our Anzac's /Veterans did us proud, and this is what our Countries have become.
Respect for the amazing men and women who fought
Continued blessings on all of these men. Thankfully they've deservedly lived long lives.
Rest in peace to all who died there, let us raise a toast to the heroes of D-day lest we forget
Very emotional 😢😢😢...
Aww, my grandad went over on day 6. I never met him because he died in 1952 aged only 45. My nana always said he was never the same man when he came back. Interestingly, while he was there he found a gold fob watch, his youngest son still has, but never found out who it belonged to.
It belonged to me. Give it back.
Respect to all these brave warriors
Cool, I'm amazed to see anyone actually made it back at this point. I'm sure many would like to be there but just are so old to make the trip.
I remember one vet saying: "It was an amazing time, but I would never want to do it again!!!"
So, so proud of them & all our armed forces….. Gives me the freedom to write on here…
@SmokeroftheFuture copied and pasted lol
Verdaderos héroes gracias por todo!
Those chaps looking very good for their age..😮
They look really good for their age. Remarkably so in fact.
And look how they are treated by the government
one of our last WWII vets was on his way over there and he died on the way there. may he RIP
Heroes
We will never forget what they did for us ❤
Both my grandfathers said they wished they’d never fought for this country. If there is ever another war, I won’t lift a finger. I’m not risking my life to defend ‘de-colonised’ libraries and smashed statues.
Amazing men #lestweforget
My grandfather was a German general who notably oversaw the Atlantic Wall. I was in Normandy in June 2015, 2019 and 2024 as well as in Bastogne (Belgium) in December 2019 for the celebrations of these battles. I am always moved to see the veterans of the allied countries. I think this war could have ended sooner if intelligent German officers had shown more courage
Support Our Paras ❤️💙🤍too 💕
Let's just stop the political comments and respect the men who made this trip and thank them for the hell they endured. Our current climate does not matter and they should not be used as an excuse for political diatribe. Let's just show a mark of respect for their actions?
Well I think most of them would be horrified to see the country they fought for. I like many veterans of my generation are of the same opinion. I wouldn’t bother to serve again given the state of the country these days I am sad to say. Also let’s remember the boys down Italy who eighty years ago were liberating Rome and are largely ignored and forgotten by the media circus and political class. Anyone would think D Day was the be all of the war. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Hats off to them but literally millions of British and Commonwealth troops were getting stuck in from Italy to Burma and the Pacific. It’s a disgrace that their sacrifices are largely ignored by the media and the political class. Normandy was a holiday camp compared to the war in the Far East. No disrespect but there were far worse places to be serving in June 44. Ask the Chindits and The British Indian Army and the boys in Italy. Raise your glasses for those largely ignored units. The ones without Private Ryan style publicity.
@@jameslynch7826 Burma and Italy are often overlooked. Both were fought in hellish weather conditions, both against an enemy which would not admit defeat.
They set an example and gave their lives that the world would be free. If we let their bravery and beliefs fade away their deaths will have been in vain. Hitler was a politician whose policies and soldiers killed millions before our politicians stopped ignoring the threat and joined the fight. If the American politicians and people who wanted to isolate America had gotten their way, our allies could not have done this alone. Saying not to make a political statement ignores the direct connection between those who control countries and their direct effect on democracy or the return of dictators. We can’t let this generation and our soldiers fighting for freedom from dictators die in vain.

My grandfather was a young RN Captain who was in command of an LCA (Landing Craft Assault) on the D-Day landings. He was a remarkable man who experienced much during the landings etc.
His brother was on mine sweepers in the Atlantic and later D-Day.
The greatest generation ❤️

if things should get worse in the coming times. We need only cage our fears and harbor the strength of those hero's, gone before us.

MERCI
I'll never forget this place, the miles and miles of white cross markers. Way to much American time lost. Never heal but get over I will. They cant win. God wont allow it. This much I know.
Українці пам'ятають. Українці вдячні.
its sad to have to watch this on youtube. this should be on every news broad cast and in every news paper. the world is forgetting we must not let that happen.
it is not fair that they died for us just so that we could take this time of peace for granted
Legends ❤
Haha no...
Hope they where apologised too, as davos ruling everyones lifes was not what they fought for, they fought against those who tried to control everyones decisions
Why weren’t the German veterans invited?
It would be a great sign of friendship between Germany and the allied countries.
Honours and all the respect be for all the Army, Navy and Air Force (men and ladies) who prepared for and fought in the Overlord Operation, the famous D-Day in France (Normandy)! Even with sacrifice of their own life, all began the invitation for all Europe people to give hands, for the peace forever and in order for democracy, as all, of us, must be like brothers!God accept, in the eternity, all them. And to be never forgotten their nice and admirable examples, let us pray, nowadays and very often, for God! D-Day was, is and will be, always, a remarkable and unforgetable date! Here, just a portuguese and christian family, in Portugal. Respectfully. L+E
Wasn't much of a fly past by the RAF, I know the spits and hurricanes are grounded, but could have put up a lanc and a DC3. These are the aircaraft these wonderful guys could have related to, not one miserable A400
There are only 2 airworthy Lancaster bombers in the world currently, 1 in Britain (pa474) which is part of the Battle of Britain memorial flight and 1 in Canada (fm213) a third in britain (nx611 "Just Jane) is only available for taxi runs but is being made airworthy. Unfortunately these aircraft are limited in their use currently due to the spitfire crash that claimed the life of Typhoon and BBMF pilot squadron leader Mark Long.
Better safe than to have another tragedy on a day as special as this.
Salute.
Me gustó que hayan puesto la pista de audio en español
No one in my family was there in Normandy, but the men who fought were heroes, and liberated France, and all of Europe, from the threat of Nazism. I salute them, and hope their memory will be remembered.
The people haven’t forgotten but the politicians have.

Imagine being conscripted into the army and being forced to die so that your home can be turned into a third world slum.
I hope there is nothingness after death, I wouldn't want those that gave up the rest of their lives to see what they enabled.
Well said we want traditional wars
@@GrandpaVince We do NOT want any wars ai all!!!
So, could this piece at least mention what D-Day was all for? They make it sound as if the sacrifice of those brave men was pointless, whereas it was anything but that. It was to set Europe free from tyranny and Britain free from the threat of it, and make a better country for generations to come. And look what we've done with our freedom.....
Europe is under more tyranny now than it was back then 😂
The last generation of real men
1:32 "Everybody did what they had to do and that was it."
Not sure how these old gents could fly. Their massive brass balls would keep the planes from taking off!

My uncle never returned home alive.
BLESS THEM ALL , SALUTE .
No celebrations in London ..why impossible?no nostalgia. For the English
The world is forgetting and the next one is coming.
Nothing's coming. Putler and Winnie are full of hot air. Always have been. WW3 is the greatest con.
Todos que lutaram contra o nazismo são heróis eternos da humanidade.
Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do not honor the memory of their ancestors are doomed to extinction.
The unconditional act of surrender was signed by Marshal of the USSR Georgy Zhukov, who led the army that liberated all of Europe and all of humanity from fascism and erected the Soviet red flag on the Reichstag, on May 8, 1945 in the suburbs of Berlin and the witnesses were signed by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, Marshal Arthur Tedder (Great Britain), General K. Spaats (USA) and General J. de Lattre de Tassigny (France).
Donald Trump called them "losers and suckers". Class act.
Emotional rescue…
Whenever u hear anyone talk about the queen ,
Every one’s mind automatically pictures Elizabeth
Who just passed away
The gravitas of the name queen definitely does not fit Camilla in the least
Sorry
But I feel the whole country and world feels this way
The queen has gone
So
Wind royal family down now
They never ask them what they think of this government and what they've done to our country - No one ?
they have gone to remember fallen comrades , nothing to do with todays politics
@peterramsden3134 bullshit, its every bit their country if not, more so and they have an opinion
Old Vincey was there storming those beaches and I managed a triple kill with a special grandpa vince punch combination
Up till now, no minority soldiers or troops or regiments from the colonies have been included in any D-Day honours or remembrances. What about the Indian soldiers, British troops of Caribbean descent and even regiments from North Africa and West Africa who were drafted into this War, knowing little or nothing about what it was all about?
African American military men who were suffered segregation but were still forced to fight in war that made Zero difference to their lives or future?
This ceremony has always been for Europe and people of European descent who continue to ignore and sideline other minorit ethnicities , decade after decade.
I don't know if know this but my cousin, who is Indian was honored and a nice big article, saying how much he loved America, because she gave him such great opportunities. By the way, his uncle was code talker, and we knew they helped us win the war.
Of the many lost men on that day, and the days following, King Solomon said as a wise old man: “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” There were many stories of miraculous deliverance among them. Only "in the judgment" will "the saints" come to understand the rules of engagement between Christ and Satan that allowed GOD to intervene for some of those men as He did for Desmond Doss on Okinawa.
