there are some rumours suggest that nintendo rejected their partnership with Sony for reasons , one of them is that , president of nintendo of japan met with some one of those who work at Sony's probably some one who is a very highly regarded person at the company , and as they talk , that guy was bold enough to claim many things that nintendo did not like including that Sony will take control of developing nintendo franchises like mario , zelda , and metroid and many more , which give nintendo a bit of a knowledge over Sony's personality , which has to do with Sony having a massive ego of thinking they own every thing of what ever they are working at , like working on game hard ware or what ever that could be related to any deal they make like nintendo franchises that could have games released on that add on that nintendo rejected from Sony, as for sega , it could be also for similar reasons , but possibly also that Sony was taking advantage of then to know secrets of what ever hard ware they were producing , what ever is arcades or game console , but these are just some informations that i heard about , you might need to do research to know about it better
They got that ego after their "success" with the PSX. They got an even bigger ego with the success of the ps2 - never realizing they sold so well due to poor or lack of competition. And then they almost went out of the business due to the ps3...
Funny thing: SEGA aided Microsoft in joining the video game market as well in 1998, and after SEGA dropped out in 2001, Microsoft was close to buying SEGA but it didn’t go through. You can still see SEGA’s influence in the original Xbox’s button layouts of the gamepad.

Nintendo’s decisions around this time were just Nintendo being Nintendo. Sega on the other hand really shot themselves in the foot, as SOJ’s business decisions became increasingly unhinged to the point they were outright suicidal. The amount of jealousy and spite they felt towards SOA was massive to the point of ludicrous unprofessionalism, simply because they couldn’t think of the bigger picture and *only* cared about being more popular in their home country. SOA was making all the smart decisions that made Sega what it was, until SOJ actively started doing the exact opposite of everything SOA proposed. It’s a wild ride of a rabbit hole to read into, highly recommend.
@@digitalcyborg20 It didn't in a sense. Philips still had the rights to produce Nintendo games based on their property, but an SNES add-on with Philips didn't pan out after Nintendo witnessed the failure of the Sega CD. And eventhough an SNES add-on with Philips didn't work out, Philips still had the rights to make games based on Nintendo's properties for their own system for a few years as the contract between them was still in effect!
and it brings us to sega or whatever cd line up of red book orange book yellow book green book beige book blue book white book scarlet book and violet book rainbow color type coded digital book compact discs.
I don't think this is a "Hindsight is 20/20" deal, it was genuinely just a really scummy move from Nintendo to ditch Sony like that, and the outcome of pissing off a much larger corporation with more resources than you after giving them basically a crash course in how to beat you in the market was EXTREMELY predictable. Especially paired with Nintendo refusing to use discs with the N64, this is entirely stuff that was so easy to avoid that even people at the time were facepalming over Nintendo's decisions. The stupidest part is how they were concerned about Sony backstabbing them and honestly thought that doing the backstabbing first would make Sony throw their hands up and go "Well, guess we have to leave them alone now!"
Sony indirectly "forced" Nintendo into ditching them from behind the scenes; as Sony actually designed said contract between them to be rejected! Creating the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' effect. In reality, Sony didn't technically need Nintendo or Sega to enter the video market. Sony just wanted a weakness to exploit to gain media attention to their brand. If Nintendo stuck with Sony, they would've actually 'absorbed' Nintendo into being a 1st party developer for Sony; thus taking Nintendo's independence from them; while getting little profit back(unless Sony handed over full control of the PlayStation brand to Nintendo of course)!
Sony had only just started becoming a massive conglomerate. Until a few years earlier they were known for electronics. Over '87-88 they purchased CBS Records and Columbia Pictures. Ken Kutaragi pestered Nintendo to make a CD-ROM drive for the SNES, but they saw no benefit for games, so he told them software on the drive would be anything BUT games, which finally convinced them, albeit reluctantly. Their mistake was not making sure to have that part put in the contract for the CD-ROM. In early '89 Sony formed their first software wing, Sony Imagesoft. So yeah, Nintendo was right to be concerned. kotaku.com/the-weird-history-of-the-super-nes-cd-rom-nintendos-mo-1828860861 Sony was every bit as scummy if not moreso.
@@mohammedganai9636 And that's the part of the story that always gets glossed over. People focus too much on Sony's side of the story instead of looking at Nintendo's side of the story in addition!
Imagine a world were Nintendo and Sony joined forces that would have been dangerous for the competing gaming companies. Super Mario Odyssey in 5k on PS5 now that would be amazing. I love this story of the biggest mistake in gaming history. Also Sony was dominating other forms of entertainment the risk wasn't that big for Nintendo or Sega because even If It somehow failed Sony would move on and Nintendo and Sega would have continued without Sony. I would love to hear Sony, Nintendo and Sega ceo's being asked this what If scenario If they did go 100 % on working together to see what they would say these days. Cool video. ^_^
Nintendo's biggest problem was how they treated their software partners (a problem they didn't fully correct until the Wii). Sony offered them all much more favorable publishing terms, particularly not limiting the amounts of games they could release and charging them much lower publishing fees (even waiving them for smaller companies), on top of providing them with easier hardware to work with, good development kits, and, of course, the large capacity of CD-ROM. Unsurprisingly, they all mostly ditched Nintendo during the 5th generation. Also, Sony attracted a number of new companies into making console games. Probably the single biggest reason the PS1 and PS2 absolutely dominated, they had LOTS of developers making lots of games for them. Nintendo managed to survive only because their first party titles make them vast amounts of money, and they make a point of never selling their hardware at a loss (even when this means unnecessarily hindering their machines' capabilities). Sony might not have driven Nintendo out of the console business, but at least Nintendo learned their lesson.
Yes Nintendo were a tad arrogant during the N64 and GameCube era they thought that developers wouldn’t leave them but oh boy that fire back quickly also the GB line also help Nintendo alongside the Mammoth popularity of Pokémon which still makes them a ton I mean a ton of money but yeah they sorta learn their lesson with the Wii kinda and then the U but Nintendo wants u to forget about that and now they seem to finally have found their balance with the Switch which in many ways the like PS1 and PS2 a robust library of games a affordable price and a massive amount of support from 3rd party developers hey they even got square back despite square making fun of them in the 90s but hey time heals all wounds and 135 mil units sold also
I mean in a way if Sony never got betrayed we wouldn't have Xbox and of course then we wouldn't have had halo 4:23 in a way they were right but their fear only caused it to happen faster also your channel is underated I love the good messages at the end
Halo was originally supposed to be an apple Mac exclusive till Microsoft somehow convinced bungie to sell exclusively to PC and xbox. So even if xbox never came out, Halo was going to come out, had it played out that way then it would've launched on Mac first then eventually PC.
As a longtime Sega gamer, I have a particular vendetta against Sony for their Playstation consoles and feel the Sega Saturn could have done a lot better if Sony hadn't interfered. If the rumor that the CEO of Sega of Japan said that Sony has no business in the video game market is true, then I'd have to side with him; Playstation consoles rely way too heavily on third-party support (Sega and Nintendo have the decency to make their own games) and their button scheme is different from every other major console on the market.
I feel the sega Saturn could have deserved to be a good console. If sonic extreme but remove the e and not even a red R as it, and if it happens to be released then ye
Wait so Sony did not belong but what about all the others would applied and failed. If a company believes that can contribute and be successful in a new industry, then they should be allowed to try. Sega only has themselves to blame for their downfall, Sega was arrogant and underestimated Sony and the got beaten badly. Sega can't even make good Sonic games meanwhile Sony making GOTY contender games. Sony makes their own games that why they have studios are first party. Sony makes far better games than Sega. Sony button scheme was different because they wanted to be different unlike Sega that was a wannabe Nintendo. Sega Japan made several bad decisions while Sega America wanted to work with Sony. Sony was just far better than Sega respectfully.
@@KingAgniKai I disagree. The Saturn, while still playing second fiddle to the PS1, was actually much more popular in Japan than in the US. However, I will say that even though Sega's North American and Japanese branches had their creative differences, perhaps things would have worked out a lot better for the both of them if they weren't pressured to compete with the PS1.
actually did sega have any secondary mascots? Like nintendo has link But what does sega have ik nights came later but still what about before then alex kidd is their og mascot yeah sure but idk if that counts. closest thing one could consider may be the guy from altered beast but they have only like 3.5 games
As grand as the PlayStation brand is, I don’t think a partnership would have been a great idea to begin with. People tend to overlook Nintendo’s side and gloss over to Sony’s side of the story, but the truth is, if the partnership did go through: Then Sony would be the sole company to take over profits made on the Play-Station with Nintendo making very little money on that unreleased platform in return, which yes, if a game like Super Mario or Zelda appeared on the Super CD format, that profit would be awarded to Sony and not Nintendo.
I've been saying this for years. Everything you said has already been mentioned in a G4 video where Tony Hawk was the host. That video was back and around 2004. This is the main reason I specifically hate Nintendo.
Not really relevant to the video, but Sony wasn't the only company Sega passed up on collaborating on a console with. Microsoft also approached Sega to co-develop a console while the Dreamcast was being designed. But Sega turned them down. Of course, Microsoft then went on to develop the Xbox. So, Sega contributed to not one, but two new competitors entering the home console market.
What if in an alternate timeline, Sony never entered the gaming industry? Had Ken Kutaragi instead decided it was a waste of time? How'd history have played out?
0:06 I'm kinda the same way but uts more of a case to case basis 0:34 Sega did actually have their own link 6:24 what is that program you uses 6:57 I mean it makes sense if Nintendo is going to partner with your rival why not partner with theirs 7:31 pretty much 9:45 see I was right also I've watched all your videos
Playstation won out also because slowly all the big name game companies left the Cartridge format, in favor for the CD format, which packed much more data, allowing for larger, richer environments, pre-rendered cut scenes, and of course, CD quality music.
Alternate timeline:Nintendo and Sony team up and they are unbeatable!!! Microsoft releases the Xbox it flips. Nintendo and Sony buyout many many many 3rd party companies and it makes a monopoly.
Somy definitely never created games as good as nintendo did tho. They added MAGIC to their games. Made them so addictive. For me, playstation just means GTA & Bioshock. All the games now are just disjointed movies. Sooo boring

there is no winning or losing. There is being profitable, even if you are in third place but are able to make money you will stay in business. Sega clearly were no longer profitable.

there are some rumours suggest that nintendo rejected their partnership with Sony for reasons , one of them is that , president of nintendo of japan met with some one of those who work at Sony's probably some one who is a very highly regarded person at the company , and as they talk , that guy was bold enough to claim many things that nintendo did not like including that Sony will take control of developing nintendo franchises like mario , zelda , and metroid and many more , which give nintendo a bit of a knowledge over Sony's personality , which has to do with Sony having a massive ego of thinking they own every thing of what ever they are working at , like working on game hard ware or what ever that could be related to any deal they make like nintendo franchises that could have games released on that add on that nintendo rejected from Sony, as for sega , it could be also for similar reasons , but possibly also that Sony was taking advantage of then to know secrets of what ever hard ware they were producing , what ever is arcades or game console , but these are just some informations that i heard about , you might need to do research to know about it better
That's because Sony designed said contract between them to be rejected. Creating what I like to call the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' Effect!
They got that ego after their "success" with the PSX.
They got an even bigger ego with the success of the ps2 - never realizing they sold so well due to poor or lack of competition.
And then they almost went out of the business due to the ps3...
@@Leonard_Wolf_2056 lmao @ Sony going out of business

And soon Nintendo and Sony may create a new rival
ok i just started watching youre video's today, and man, i like you
Funny thing: SEGA aided Microsoft in joining the video game market as well in 1998, and after SEGA dropped out in 2001, Microsoft was close to buying SEGA but it didn’t go through.
You can still see SEGA’s influence in the original Xbox’s button layouts of the gamepad.
Sega + Nintendo vs Sony???
The crash on the thumbnail: WoAh!
Sony & Nintendo in 1990: Let's Make a CD Add on for the SNES
Nintendo in 1991: I'm going with Philips now. Have fun making your OWN Console. Try stopping me then.
Philips: Let's make a CD-i.
Nintendo: Sure
2 years later
Philips: Still making these Mario and Zelda games?
Nintendo: Yes. They'll be on sale when it's finished.
Sony in 1994: PlayStation! Rise from the sky to the stores!!!
SEGA 1994: Sega Saturn! rise to the stores my man.
Nintendo in 1996: Nintendo 64 Sha'll rise!
Sometime later in the mid 90s: SEGA And SONY partnered up
Again: *forgotten*
i think the story of schism between Sega of Japan and Sega of America is worth as a video topic, maybe someday?

Damn that's interesting, i never heard this story until now
imagine if playstation actually didn't exist
New video! Nice

Wait, what about the Philips CDI with Hotel Mario?
What about it?
@@G.L.999 he said the Nintendo and Philips partnership never came to be even though it did.
@@digitalcyborg20 It didn't in a sense. Philips still had the rights to produce Nintendo games based on their property, but an SNES add-on with Philips didn't pan out after Nintendo witnessed the failure of the Sega CD.
And eventhough an SNES add-on with Philips didn't work out, Philips still had the rights to make games based on Nintendo's properties for their own system for a few years as the contract between them was still in effect!
and it brings us to sega or whatever cd line up of red book orange book yellow book green book beige book blue book white book scarlet book and violet book rainbow color type coded digital book compact discs.
i looked up here in the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Books
@@G.L.999 Sony already made prototypes of their own PS-X units, which played both SNES carts and disc based units, doing an end run around Nintendo.

Sony was every bit as scummy if not moreso.
@@mohammedganai9636 And that's the part of the story that always gets glossed over. People focus too much on Sony's side of the story instead of looking at Nintendo's side of the story in addition!
As grand the PlayStation brand is, I don’t think partnering up with Nintendo would be such a wise idea.
What do you use for the 3d room for your videos?
Can you remember me if you hit 1M?
Yes Nintendo were a tad arrogant during the N64 and GameCube era they thought that developers wouldn’t leave them but oh boy that fire back quickly also the GB line also help Nintendo alongside the Mammoth popularity of Pokémon which still makes them a ton I mean a ton of money but yeah they sorta learn their lesson with the Wii kinda and then the U but Nintendo wants u to forget about that and now they seem to finally have found their balance with the Switch which in many ways the like PS1 and PS2 a robust library of games a affordable price and a massive amount of support from 3rd party developers hey they even got square back despite square making fun of them in the 90s but hey time heals all wounds and 135 mil units sold also
And after this we never saw a massive tech company make an attempt to aggressively enter the gaming sphere again…
This is what happens when you don’t go Kutaragi’s way
Nintendo single handley crreated an enemy more successful than Sega
I'd say it was Ken's doing. Clever, crafty, sneaky Ken.
3:21 why is she playing League on 3 monitors wtf 💀

Halo was originally supposed to be an apple Mac exclusive till Microsoft somehow convinced bungie to sell exclusively to PC and xbox.
So even if xbox never came out, Halo was going to come out, had it played out that way then it would've launched on Mac first then eventually PC.

Coulda said Landstalker or something.
Imagine still being this butthurt for so long? Yeah put all the blame on Sony but not Sega for making poor decisions themselves. 🤣
SEGA of Japan is why the Saturn failed. Sony just kicked them while they were falling down.
Like nintendo has link
But what does sega have ik nights came later but still what about before then alex kidd is their og mascot yeah sure but idk if that counts.
closest thing one could consider may be the guy from altered beast but they have only like 3.5 games
Bean the Duck?
As grand as the PlayStation brand is, I don’t think a partnership would have been a great idea to begin with. People tend to overlook Nintendo’s side and gloss over to Sony’s side of the story, but the truth is, if the partnership did go through: Then Sony would be the sole company to take over profits made on the Play-Station with Nintendo making very little money on that unreleased platform in return, which yes, if a game like Super Mario or Zelda appeared on the Super CD format, that profit would be awarded to Sony and not Nintendo.
This video is good
Nice video i subscribed for more.
If Nintendo and Sony did get along together, then the Philips CD-i wouldn't exist and therefore UA-cam Poops would have never been created at all.

I've been saying this for years. Everything you said has already been mentioned in a G4 video where Tony Hawk was the host. That video was back and around 2004. This is the main reason I specifically hate Nintendo.
What?
Not really relevant to the video, but Sony wasn't the only company Sega passed up on collaborating on a console with. Microsoft also approached Sega to co-develop a console while the Dreamcast was being designed. But Sega turned them down. Of course, Microsoft then went on to develop the Xbox. So, Sega contributed to not one, but two new competitors entering the home console market.
As a dutch person I feel proud
Giggity
You sure that deal between Philips and Nintendo didn't go anywhere?
Yesss
Ooooo sonic and mario
What if in an alternate timeline, Sony never entered the gaming industry? Had Ken Kutaragi instead decided it was a waste of time? How'd history have played out?
We would still properly have new sega consoles
0:06 I'm kinda the same way but uts more of a case to case basis 0:34 Sega did actually have their own link 6:24 what is that program you uses 6:57 I mean it makes sense if Nintendo is going to partner with your rival why not partner with theirs 7:31 pretty much 9:45 see I was right also I've watched all your videos
If they had made the deal with Nintendo we would have never gotten the PlayStation or Legendary games like final fantasy VII Persona and more
Playstation won out also because slowly all the big name game companies left the Cartridge format, in favor for the CD format, which packed much more data, allowing for larger, richer environments, pre-rendered cut scenes, and of course, CD quality music.
Alternate timeline:Nintendo and Sony team up and they are unbeatable!!! Microsoft releases the Xbox it flips. Nintendo and Sony buyout many many many 3rd party companies and it makes a monopoly.
this is similar to ferrari v ford story
Because Nintendo stop the SNES CD sony and then Sega said no for Sony’s idea they made PS.
