The gaming industry feels a little more lifeless and sterile these days. Mobile games, online gaming, and insane graphics in some ways change the experience a lot of us “older” gamers had growing up.
I think Nintendo takes the cake for (mostly) sticking true to themselves and being successful even as the world around them changes. They always try new things yet still always throw nods to their previous work.

Nintendo has always been my favorite company, but I can't help but love the fact that Microsoft now seems fully committed to backwards compatibility more than any other company. It's awesome that I can still play select original Xbox and 360 games on Series X. We expect the next Switch system to have BC but you can never be too sure.

Maybe this is a weird opinion to have, but I'm just glad more people are experiencing other consoles rather than shutting themselves in and going "No! No I'll only play games on xxx console from xxx company!"
Perhaps this is simply me, but I always feel like people are missing out when they are so loyal to one specific company. There's no video game police that are going to come and kick down your door if you say, enjoy Nintendo and Sega or like Sony and Microsoft.

The reason I developed brand loyalty to Nintendo is because when I was a kid, I could only get a few games per year. The times I took a risk and bought a non-Nintendo game, I almost always got burned and it was a real bummer to know you are stuck with a bad game and have to wait until next Christmas or some holiday for a chance to get another game.

I agree, there's good stuff everywhere. I mostly stick to Nintendo nowadays for two major reasons: time and money. Maybe Sony’s best move was making their consoles also function as an entertainment hub.
    PS1: played music CDs
    PS2: played DVDs
PS3-current: played Blu rays and streamed content.
By helping boost the number of consoles to casual fans, it seemed like they had an easier time attracting all the best developers. Microsoft took a similar approach (though got hurt when they first backed HD-DVDs instead of BD).
Do you know what happens when we get an amazing beloved console that doesn’t sell enough units to casual gamers? We get a Dreamcast. Great system but developers were just scratching its potential when the system got cancelled.

  • @rotallyPumpered

It's a little interesting to consider this outside of focus on the libraries the consoles ended up with. Which consoles would I rather use, irrespective of the games available on them?
My PlayStation consoles are some of the most useful in my collection. I frequently find myself turning one on for the media support. I've still got a few movies and TV episodes sitting on my PS3's hard drive, and they're safer there than any of the computers I've burned through and replaced in the last 15 years. The controllers are pretty versatile and comfortable, too.
Sega consoles have few unique attributes that make them compelling, but something I've grown more appreciative of since acquiring my CRT is how clean their video output tends to be. The Dreamcast's VGA support is legendary, but the Mega Drive's native RGB looks so much better than the stock SNES's noisy signal. They don't tend to try so much wacky stuff with their hardware, but I really appreciate the DC's VMU screen for the status display in Resident Evil. I've also got to hand it to the Saturn's CD playback. Have you tried its "karaoke" vocal-cancelling mode? Genuinely impressive.
The Xbox is basically just something I turn on when a guest wants to play Steel Battalion. I have to applaud the backwards compatibility initiative they've chased on recent platforms, but I've had too many issues with their systems to ever pick them. My Xbox One started to turn itself on as if it was haunted, so it's now sitting unplugged in a drawer.
For as much as they've irritated developers, I think I've most frequently found reasons to get excited about the Nintendo versions of multiplatform games. They're most likely to adopt wild, weird features like motion control support and dual screen gameplay. There's also often a sense of charm to the hardware and system software that its competition lacks. 3DS Themes are all the rage, but where my Wii U WaraWara Plaza fans at? Until the Switch, their consoles have been some of the most sturdy and reliable. I'll never forget the tests I saw of someone dropping a GameCube off a building and then quickly booting up a game on the thing. The Switch's versatility has brought me to buy so many ports of games I already owned elsewhere. If I could hypothetically buy a game on any platform, it would likely be on a Nintendo.

My heart is and will always be with NEC, I loved the PC-Engine growing up, I still love the PC-FX, their is something about the hardware.
    First to use CD's
First to bring their flagship 8/16bit console portable
First to add expandable RAM to a console via card interface.
Yes they were wrong about 'ugly' 3D graphics and the PC-FX should have had 3D capiblites but at the same time their was no console out that could match the PC-FX 2D capabilities (it could steam a video as a background at no cost to the cpu) so I understand why they were banking on 2D. My only regret is NEC never got back up after they fell, they just gave up.

Honorable mention: Nintendo. They are constantly innovating. Nothing stays the same with them; they always make unique gimmicks ahead of the curve that the others all try to copy. Probably some of the best gaming ips as well especially after aquiring SEGA.
My Vote: Neo Geo since their AES was literally the most powerful console of the early to mid 90s whereas consoles up until the 6th gen were trying to play their ports with the same quality. The perfect arcade experience console is bar nun the AES. Additionally, the mysticism surrounding the console and the games because of the hype and price makes it one of the treasures of gaming. The Neo Geo pocket and pocket color were also awesome little mobile devices and if properly promoted and not cut due to snk being sold could have saved the company. (we also dont talk about the Hyper64 because it was just sad)

Microsoft being the only American, non-Japanese company of the 4, that definitely brings a distinct flair and personality to Xbox. I actually got to tour a 1st-party Microsoft Game Studios developer. It was like an American IT office but with game graphics splattered all over the walls, free Mtn. Dew and chips and other snacks, and a bunch of dudes making games on computers with consoles everywhere. As a teenager this was like one big LAN party to me. You walk into any Japanese gaming company office and immediately the culture is much different.
Especially with their first console, strong with the American style "bigger is better". The OG Xbox had such a unique and strong personality that you can't find on any other company's machines. The 360 continued that, especially with some of the IPs e.g. Gears of War, the XB1 VCR ate sand, but then the X1X picked that generation back up and the backwards compatibility, no one else was doing or has done since. XSX is really just an X1X Pro, yet to really make its own identity outside of the fridge design.
Also the controllers are a big part. Microsoft makes the best controllers in the world imo.
A last note on the culture difference. You watch Nintendo's Directs, they are tightly controlled, tightly curated, pre-recorded PowerPoint shows. Sony's state of plays are also a little stuffy. Microsoft's showcases, are corporate yes, but the culture of presentation is more "Americanized".. that can be good or bad depending on who you are but it's definitely a difference from the other companies. That culture and the type of games companies it attracts, is kind of a big factor is the consoles I choose to purchase. My all-time fav series is Final Fantasy but the PS5 makes me sick to my stomach, and I like the culture with Xbox. So I go green.

To answer your question, I would honestly say my favorite console growing up was probably the Nintendo Wii. I didn't really realize this though until last year actually, when my girlfriend found her old Wii and I started giving it another go.
For starters, I think aesthetically/branding wise the Wii was and will likely forever be one of the best things Nintendo's ever done -- I mean the Wii Shop channel and Wii Sports music are used in memes and videos to this day, it's pretty ubiquitous in Internet culture. I'm still a huge huge fan of the console's interface as well, with all the little channels and the subtle main menu music. The opening graphics and sound effects that would display every time you chose a game was so hype. The blue light on the disc reader is still cool to me, and I loved how it would light up when you got messages.
Game wise, I think it had a lot of great games, and we've seen quite a few Wii games make their way to the Switch so that's sort of the case in point there. The backwards compatibility with GameCube was SO nice, especially for me since I didn't have one growing up. The Wii era of the Virtual Console was arguably the most consumer-friendly iteration of Nintendo services that Nintendo has ever done, and I prefer that much more over NSO.
I think that for the games that utilized them well, the Wii remote is still really fun. As an example, I LOVE this control scheme for Excite Truck. That game still holds up today imo as a great arcade racer. Some of the best entries in certain franchises are on the Wii (Super Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Galaxy, etc.) There was a lot of cool experimentation with certain WiiWare games. (Jet Rocket for example)
Finally, maybe it's controversial to speak about this but this is really what takes this console from great to absolutely insane -- The Wii is also a hacking powerhouse and was my introduction to emulation (and thus video gaming history, really, along with the Virtual Console, who was also a good history teacher). You could play QUAKE of all games on this thing with motion controls that made for a unique experience, not to mention emulating GB/NES/SNES/GBA really well. And the hacking scene has only gotten more sophisticated over time, as now you can run GameCube and Wii backups off a hard drive and play them natively since it's on original hardware, perfect for people who's disc drive broke. There are modded versions of Mario Kart Wii that feature hundreds of tracks, even those from other games. The modded Smash scene was most alive during the Wii days also.
I really really love the Wii the more and more I think about it. It is a curious case of being unpopular while still being underappreciated these days, in my opinion.
My Wii still gets regular rotation alongside my PC, PS4, Switch, and Vita.

I'm not really interested in it's motion games but it still forces me to set up the sensor bar just so I can navigate the menu with the wii mote which is annoying af specially when you realize the batteries in the wii mote are dead and you have to buy new ones and the battery life sucks smh
I have a couple of classic pro controllers for my wii but they're useless by themselves because you need to attach them to the wii mote just to be able to use them.
Maybe I'm just a noob and don't know how to use the thing but if there's a simpler way to use the Wii let me know I want to be able to sit back turn it on and play without any hassle.

It has to be Sega or Nintendo. Their consoles have the most high-quality exclusives, unique looks, and have proven to be far more durable over the years than Sony and Microsoft. My NES, Master System, Genesis systems, SNES, Saturn, N64, Sega CDs, Dreamcast, Wiis, etc., all still work great. I've had to repair my PS2s repeatedly. My OG Xbox needs a new clock capacitor right now. The red ring of death and PS3 yellow light were national news.

    Controversial opinion here:
Having grown up in the NES and Genesis era, I’m particularly partial to Nintendo and Sega. I’m thankful that we still have Nintendo but we lost Sega, obviously. Trigger Warning: I’m gonna defend Xbox here… I have always felt like the Xbox was the next Dreamcast or the “Sega successor”. Initially I hated the idea of Microsoft entering the console space but when I saw the similarities in the controllers and the massive amount of Sega games for Xbox, I gave it a shot and really liked it! If you look at the Xbox controller and compare it to the Dreamcast’s, it’s like the next step in the evolution of the Dreamcast controller. Yeah Microsoft screwed up several times but which one of these companies hasn’t? It became trendy to hate Xbox and I get it, but they’ve also done a lot right and pushed the video game industry forward in a lot of ways.
Anyway, I don’t think any console is bad. They all have things they do right and things they don’t do so well. But rather than saying who is the best, let’s all find games we like on any console and enjoy playing them! Even on the PC! 🤮😂

@@artzbeltras5379 Well let’s look at the PS2 dashboard. It had a basic system browser. The Xbox’s dashboard was way more interactive and the 360’s was even more advanced. Now system dashboards are a whole experience with stores, games, movies, elaborate user interfaces, etc.
Then there’s Xbox Live which solidified online services on consoles and multiplayer gaming. Sony had no choice to but to start charging for PSN so they had something similar in quality.
Then Xbox Live gave away free games with a subscription. Sony followed suit. Then GamePass. Nintendo tried to follow that with their Switch Online service but it’s only retro Nintendo titles.
It’s only a matter of time before Nintendo and Sony start using the Quick Resume feature on the Series X. Pause multiple games and switch between them at any time and they put you right back where you left off. It’s an awesome feature that makes gaming on other consoles seem frustrating now that you can’t just jump back into a different game. So while they screwed up big time with the Xbox One launch, they’ve done a lot right overall. And don’t worry, I’m fully prepared to defend Sony or Nintendo or Sega to anyone else lol! Xbox live introduced (or at least popularized a high quality version of) internet multiplayer on consoles, as well as a suite of features that are considered standard for console (and even PC) multiplayer like friends lists, achievements, etc. They also made hard drives standard through the original Xbox.
Halo and Gears of War both set the standard for how FPS games and TPS games would function on consoles for at least a decade.
An underrated thing they did was bring Western CRPGs to consoles with Morrowind and KOTOR. Because of those games, and the games to follow them, stuff like open worlds, dialogue options, etc became more universal in AAA games. The Xbox exclusive game, Fable, also basically set the standard for Western action RPGs going forward.
They also played a big role in making consoles more like PCs, with the original Xbox basically being a powerful PC with a controller. Additionally, they managed to outcompete the PS3 with multiplatform games by having the 360 similarly resemble PC hardware while Sony had their complicated processing and whatnot. This ultimately forced Sony to adopt a similar strategy with their own consoles going forward. One major downstream effect of this was the consolization of formerly PC genres/franchises like the aforementioned CRPGs, FPSes, etc.
There are upsides and downsides to all of this, but Microsoft has clearly contributed to modern gaming.

I only ever owned the SMS, SMD and DC. So guess who I’d choose.
I think a lot of who is best at consoles comes across in the design of the case.
Yeah I know that’s basically irrelevant but it indicates the ideas the company had regarding how they want to position their console in the market and which area to focus on.
That’s why the newer consoles are less visually distinctive or specifically any thing in particular. More like hi-do equipment. PS5 notwithstanding which is a sign of Sony having the self awareness that their console is boring but coming up with something maybe a bit weird to compensate.
Sega started with the SG1000 and SG1000 MK2 which were like functional but hi-tech devices. The Famicom, likewise avoided the ‘toy’ look but not as much as Sega did. Then Sega went ‘mean’ with the Master System ultimate control console of power space station design that looks a bit like a Delorian but black instead of silver. Mega Drive is kind of like a Hi-Fi mixed with a Porsche. The Saturn is like a giant black expensive SUV. Sega is all about power meeting function. Nintendo is more about power meets approachabilty.
But Sega pivoted. For the Dreamcast they went with less being about power and excitement than about a streamlined and sleek experience. All white. Blue menus and relaxing spa ambient sounds. The logo is so chill. Console UI is a thing that needs considering a bit. Setting the tone when you’re dealing with save files.
This style was what Nintendo was looking for. The N64 was a bit too much like a toy with it’s transparent and colourful look. The GameCube was also a bit too much like a toy in a lot of people’s minds. You don’t really need the handle.
So Nintendo are often conflicted in how to approach their market propositioning. They make their bread and butter grooming children. But that’s only half the market they want. They also want teenagers and young adults. So they borrowed from Sega’s ideas with the Dreamcast (the documents are online) and came up with the Wii.
The Wii was more of a toy in reality but it )looked) like a super sleek general entertainment device. It walked the walk too. But it got tired and now they’re £10 each.
But a successful design language across tour brand is the indication of the intent of the company that is trying to sell the product.
When you come up with a space-ship you’re not really having any idea. It’s “just make it look cool somehow” and you get a spaceship every time.
So around 1999/2000 Sega were spending out big time on r’n’d and design for the next generation of peripherals and devices. Operating as if they actually had a 10 year plan to execute. Nintendo basically ended up reciting the plan but the Wii and WiiU were fundamentally flawed ideas, so the design language became somewhat associated with Wii, which is obsolete.
What I like about DC design language is it is both approachable as well as feeling kind of serious. I mean, it has fishing games. Only old people like those games. It’s less toylike than the GameCube.
The PS2 literally uses a case designed by Atari for a computer. So yeah. A PC that was leaning into being a toy (ie for games) actually being the point that Sony was looking for. The PS1 is a very good design too. It’s kind of like a rich person’s amusing toy like a drone. It looks functional as well as stylish and whimsical.
Nintendo nailed it when they borrowed the DC design guidelines which married well with the motion control concept.
The PS2 concept is very fusty, but it worked. The case model was designed around 1990 os it was old, but the visual language of being cutting edge and functional at the expense of maybe alienating younger or casual gamers. It did end up being casual but only by virtue of the fact that it sold 150mill units and they were ubiquitous. I think it sold _despite_ it’s market position as the Tekken or Gran Turismo machine.
So I guess I’m saying that there’s a lot of luck involved in why a console is a success in sales or profit terms. It might even be irrelevant as to how ‘good’ your console is. Who has the most popular game might be the reason. Or some bad press or distribution problems.
So successful isn’t the same as good.
Maybe the question is irrelevant. But it’s a thinking point about what you value in your console going forward and what things work and don’t in the current console offering.
It’s not wrong to just be a blank canvass to host games for whoever. But that’s not exciting. The Wii was exciting.
I don’t think handhelds are the future. They are redundant with smartphones.
It’s online services just like tv is now.
So the question is. As a service provider, how do you position yourself in the market to distinguish yourself and discover untapped markets just like the Wii did (although failed to retain).
Sega fans are currently uncatered for. When there stopped m,along hardware they lost the patience of a captive audience to pursue their more wild ideas. Sega has along of ideas.
Nintendo remain a toy company. Sega remain an arcade company. Sony are a consumer electronics and media distribution. Microsoft are a generic tech conglomerate who depend on monopolies for market share the expense of actual profit. They are not invested in the game industry in particular. They want the XBox to be a home entertainment center to gain control of distribution fees for third parties but they suck at it.
The Switch is the purest console available that is the best balance of being powerful and still actually being a toy. Which a console is.
So ‘Sega wins. But Nintendo and Sega are really on the same team as not being a tech or media giant and only being a company primarily focused on video games.

My favorite retro genres are shoot 'em ups and beat 'em ups with a side of racing games and fighting games. And Sega covers all those genres very well. The best console should be determined by the library. Without the games themselves, you're just evaluating which sculpture you like. Nintendo has had had exceptional 1st party IPs. Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda are truly hard to beat. However, I must admit that the PlayStation hit me in a way that I wasn't expecting. My first home videogame was Atari SuperPong. The NES came out when I was a junior in high school and I had lost interest in home consoles at that point. I started to appreciate them again with the Super Nintendo and Genesis, but the gaming itself was much more focused on platforming, shmups, and RPGs. But with the PlayStation came Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and a host of more mature games. It really sucked me back into gaming. My PS1 and PS2 libraries include a combined total of over 450 games. There are a bunch of PS3 games that I really loved too. Games like Silent Bomber, Tecmo's Deception, Fatal Frame, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid, and quirkier stuff like Psychonauts, Parappa, Gitaroo Man, and Mister Mosquito are what make me love the PS1 and PS2. And for platforming joy, I still love Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper.
I agree that the newer Sony and Xbox consoles feel like PCs disguised as gaming machines, but looking at the libraries for at least the first 2 Sony offerings, they're responsible for reawakening my love of gaming.

on the basis of "best player experience", Nintendo hands down.....THAT is their goal with every console, the rest of the companies just make a console powerful enough for devs to run with it, they aren't looking for player experience outside of 60fps/pretty graphics

Nintendo got a more family friendly approach. I think that is really great! I also grew up with NES and SNES. But never switched to the "dark side". I've always been loyal to Nintendo and I'm still happy for that.
But I like the competition that we got. We all have different taste for gaming. Would be so boring with only Nintendo or only PlayStation.

Great video Tim. Nintendo was always going to come top, just as Microsoft would always come last. So the real question is the order for Sony and Sega... Based on consoles and games alone, I'd personally put Sega over Sony, just as I'd always put the Saturn over the original PlayStation, and the Dreamcast over the PS2. But that's just my opinion!

Quick little story for ya. I absolutely loved the SNES controller layout and grew accustomed to it and thoroughly enjoyed the Playstation with it's similar layout to the SNES and when the XBOX first came out I tried it but didn't like it because of the controller layout and how bulky it is lol don't get me wrong...they have a nice lineup of games for it but when it comes down to it, it's the controller that that I don't like it

I don't agree with the opinion that the game library is solely the thing that determines which console is best/who makes the best consoles. It sure is a big factor, but one should consider how well the console itself is built and what it offers in terms of functionality and services.
For example: Nintendo had always stuck to the ideology that a game console is made for games. Only recently did they offer things like Netflix, UA-cam, Twitch and things like that. Even so, they're way behind in that aspect, with both Sony and Microsoft offering more of an home entertainment experience rather than just games. I personally don't have an issue with Nintendo because of that. My smart tv offers most of what Xbox and Playstation does anyway. But for some, these services might be essential as to what makes a console good.
My choice goes to Nintendo. Their approach, focused on gaming, accessibility and innovation, gives them the edge, while I feel like the experience with Xbox and Playstation is a bit generic, cluttered and all over the place. Game pass is brilliant, though.

4:11 - "GC small discs meant faster loading". The drive's rotating speed dictates how fast data can be read not physical disc size.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth Рік тому

Yeah, this is a common misconception.
If anything, the small discs were a hindrance: the outer edge of a disc is larger- and so holds more data- than the middle or inside edge, so that's more data that the lens can read on each rotation. GameCube discs didn't benefit from this as much, so the max loading speed was something like 3 MB/s instead of 5 MB/s like the Xbox or PS2.
Some of those games were really well optimized, though: Mario Kart: Double Dash is a standout, with faster loading times than most cartridge games!

Looks like I need more research on this. Thanks for bringing it up. Any chance you could direct me to an article or video that explains this in detail?
GameCube games almost always loaded significantly faster than PS2 games from my experience. I thought the discs being smaller cut down on the seek times. My curiosity is now sparked!

@@RetroBirdGaming Afaik there are multiple variables like drive speed, CLV and CAV speed modes and data arrangement on the media itself. I've seen loading comparisons between systems and there is no favorite. It would be a good subject for a video.

In terms of longevity and the fact that every new Nintendo console is a NEW and unique experience, i would lean towards nintendo. I have literally never had an issue with a Nintendo console but I’ve had multiple sony and Microsoft systems die on me. There was talk of all the joycon drift but my launch model switch i got the week they came out never had a problem before i upgraded to the oled. My snes still boots up first shot but I’ve had to open and clean my ps5 and series x multiple times just to clean them out of fear of them konking out.
Do i still love xbox and PlayStation (and Sega)? Yes very much so, I’m just saying in terms of reliability and uniqueness nintendo takes it.

And with that, everyone is a winner!

Honestly I never thought one console was necessarily better than another as each does things well. Nintendo has a lineup of classic Ips that they continue to develop for and Nintendo always tend to find unique ways to play those games. With Microsoft. (Which I know the least about) to me was that system that was always the best at online game play and I would say they do the best at game preservation by making their consoles backward compatible with previous console games. Finally Soney is that really great story teller console. Soney does put upgrades into their hardware but soney always seems to let the games themselves do the talking. Games Like God of War Uncharted and the last of us or even older games like Jack and Daxter and Shadow of the colossus always had a real emotional way of telling a story.
