- Sega was a multi-million dollar powerhouse in the 1990s. They were a titan of the video game industry and waged war with Nintendo. But in the late 90s, Sega lost the console war. What happened? What caused Sega to fall so far from grace and fail in the world of console gaming?

IGN PRESENTS THE HISTORY OF SEGA

I worked at Sega of America from 1993-95 and lived through the rise and fall... fairly accurate depiction of those times. Well done.
Can we have your thoughts on the train wreck that is Hollywood's attempt at a Sonic movie?

But let's not forget that it was their idea to push the 32x and CD, while Japan was ready to move to the Saturn
hahaha
Sega of America did what? Sega was never popular in the US and the Japanese knew that, also, it was the director of Sega US that failed to supply shops with the Dreamcast which was also coincidentally Microshaft's first foray into console design and guess what, for his utter incompetence he was rewarded with the same job but now working for Microshaft after Sega went under. hmmm
Fuck Bill gates and ignorant 'muricans who bought the Xbotch, 20 years of mediocrity and still MS is able to have an army of Stans... In the US mind you, Europe was Sega territory, they were, as, if not more popular than Nintendo, Xbox sees very little sales over here and in Japan it's a joke. just look back and tell me what ground breaking games did the Xbloop studios came up with? I’d like to see you do a video on why you think Warner Bros has failed to keep Looney Tunes relevant today while Disney still keeps Mickey and friends as well known as they were in the past. I’m currently watching Space Jam with my 3 year old and it’s weird to think she has no idea who these characters are since they are never seen anymore!
Underscorer Well now I feel old 😂😂😂
@saberspark Thank you for loving this! I was having a bad night and you made it better!
I thing it all comes down to money. Warner Bros. is a large corporation, yes, but Disney is a fucking empire. They have enough money to constantly advertise their characters, so the kids will always recognize them from the merchandising.
I gotta agree with Don Feik, whatever the case may be, the root cause of the problem has to go back to how much money each corporation has to throw around. And financially speaking, Warner Bros. couldn't catch up to Disney if the latter took a break for 10 years.
I also agree with Don, and I agree with the lost and forgotten. The HUGE reason I believe why a lot of kids do not know the Looney Tunes comes down to what Don discussed, AND I think it comes down to what they’re showing on TV nowadays. Look at the block that Wabbit/The New Looney Tunes is stuck on! With Teen Titans Go dominating everything, they can barely get a bit of screen time in like the other shows! As for Disney, Mickey is a mascot, so they have to use him at least once in a while. (Even though I thought Bugs was supposed to be Warner’s. I guess they really don’t care about him anymore since it seems they’ve gone...out of that for the time being.) By the way, Mickey seems to be making a comeback as of 2013 and onwards! (Seriously, you guys. When has the mouse last had a show since House of Mouse?) Even Donald Duck is doing it this year with Ducktales!...Kind of.

+PLC The Legacy-Yeah, you will find too often that the "losers" of the "console wars" are made so because of their own ineptitude and their own stupid decisions. Ie. Microsoft has struggled this entire generation with the XBOX One over stupid decisions they willingly made: announcing that they were going to lock used games and have the XBOX on permanent internet, only to rush to nix those plans when the backlash became way too much. Forced the integration of the Kinect with the XBOX One at first where the XBOX One ran all the way up to at least $500 on release day. Lack of exclusives, botched release day titles, repeatedly cancelled high budget projects for whatever reason and shuttered a catalog of its own internal developers. Microsoft routinely f'd up this generation, so all their turmoil and woes over the situation is entirely THEIR fault.
Likewise, it was probably much the same story with Sega back in the 90s. They missed out on an opportunity to create a console with Nintendo because they create their own-the Saturn and the Dreamcast. However, according to someone here, Sega sued developers trying to create games for their own console because the process was so confusing and Sega never told them how to use it, the developers tried to reverse engineer games on their own to figure it out. Basically, Sega was suing its own developers for DARING. ..to make games for their own console and of course, that fallout had to have been a public embarrassment.
The damage was probably around done with what happened with the Saturn to where it is likely very few companies wanted to work with Sega on their next console, the Dreamcast. From what I can gather, that console dropped like a stone, probably even as early as release, to where it remains a far more obscure console a few people who grew up with genuinely still love it.
And it looks like after the Dreamcast failed and Microsoft dipped its toes in the console market with the first XBOX, Sega finally surrendered and never made a console again. And it seems ever since all the way back when that happened. . .they haven't really done anything of relevance. The Sonic titles were still great. . .until they weren't. . .and Sega refuses to put this series into the peaceful sleep that it deserves. They only have done a few series, some with cult followings (Valkyria Chronicles), and a few random mobile games here and there, but other than that, they operate as a hollow shell of who they used to be and whoever the executives are left are not capable or willing to let anything change about it.
Even Microsoft has.
Scott Gordon completely true statement dude.

Nino IsEverywhere Because some of us are annoyed that people still bring up a game that came out over a decade ago.
I know the point, and it's sad, Sega is a company with a lot of potential, but they make a lot of bad decisions, it's annoying to see that Sonic's image is down, it's sad to see that a lot of the new Sonic games are just '' not so bad ''.

Let's face it. Sega was terminally ill well before Dreamcast hit the market.

I think the overlook of broadband, pirated games, and being able to override the system with no physical mod…that really hurt the Dreamcast. A friend that had well off parents handed me a bunch of new games on CDR. Blew my mind at the time. A few months later ATR offered the Stingray and a 1mbps download speed. Everyone was able to get all games, even on release date for free. Many were still playing after it was discontinued. Me and everyone I knew still had Dreamcast as a big system up till 2005 in home. So many games we couldn’t play them all! That was a huge oversight not many talk about. Also I watched movies on mine with CDR early on before PS2.
Dreamcast was awesome because you can play burnt games from all over the world with jus a toothpick trick.
I thought this was going to be a video crapping on 3D Sonic, but it was actually a very well researched video. Thank you for that
The problem with sonic is nostalgia from the 90s. I've encountered this many times, also with mortal kombat. What little good progress comes from innovation is stepped on by the 90s. Its also a problem for comics where the 10% silver age fans call modern comics out and promote their era as better.sonic can work in 3d for example as sonic adventure is proof of this, but the problem is that they never developed this model. Each game often is an independent development and so Sega games can be disconnected as is the case with sonic in 3d.
Tl;dr: Japanese division’s ego and stubbornness almost killed an entire company. Damn Nintendo, my man, you dodged a bullet there.

I know! Where's the apostrophe?
The story of sega is almost like the story of the man who died in a flood. The waters began rising. A family drove by his house and offered him a ride. He said “no, god will save me.” So they left. A while later his yard was flooded. A man in a fishing boat passed by and said “hey get in!” “No no, god will save me” he replied. By now the man was sitting on the roof of his now flooded house. A helicopter flew by and the pilot yelled “hey, get in!” And of course the man declined. He died that day. When he stood before god at the pearly gates he said “God, why didn’t you save me?”
“You idiot” God replied. “I sent help your way three times and three times you refused.”

Sega lost me with that whole Sega CD, 32x, Saturn fiasco.
If you want some 'behind the scenes' of what happened to SEGA in the 1990s, the History Channel is doing a documentary on SEGA and the industry, including interviews of Tom Kalinske and others - should be out in early 2019. Since I was there during the whole time of our great rise, 1991-96, I can tell you that we received so much pressure to put out product that was not good - remember 32X, early SEGA Saturn launch with few good games, etc? SEGA of America was the only profitable division of the overall company that led to their Nikkei stock market growth in 1992-94, so we were 'asked' to market products even when we knew they weren't right for the market, or ready for our dedicated gamer base. Eventually, a lot of the original team (Exec's and dedicated others) were discouraged, and left for better futures - many going to PlayStation which took our 'playbook' and ran with it, making them so successful out of the gate in 1995 and beyond. Nevertheless, it was a phenomenal experience, and I have never been a part of such a talented, passionate, and dedicated team since then!
Hey I read about you in the Book Console Wars by Blake Harris.

simple, ww2.
Indeed
You forgot to mention that SEGA made it prohibitive for developers to develop for the SEGA Saturn, which contained a proprietary chipset that was difficult and expensive to code for. Some game developers went as far as to reverse-engineer SEGA games to try to learn more about how to develop for the Saturn, only to have SEGA sue them instead of providing better documentation! A lawsuit which SEGA embarrassingly lost in the end, because it was ruled that preventing developers from reverse-engineering SEGA games wasn't ruled as patent infringement, but instead stifled competition in the open market. In short, SEGA wound-up competing with its own loyal developers over the Saturn console.
Incorrect. PSX was never released outside of Japan.
Mackenzie Peters no worries, before the PSX DVR unit came out many referred to the first PlayStation as PSX, because "PSX" was initially the console's code name. People starting calling PlayStation PS1 when the successor PS2 came out. Before that it was often abbreviated as PS or PSX.
"Code name"? So, PlayStation's name was often abbreviated as with its code name, despite that other consoles have not been treated with such practice? Most illogical.
Anakunus other consoles? Most systems have code names. It's certainly logical. To me it's illogical to even ask this question.
No. A logical thing would be to abbreviate other consoles with their code names, yet that is not done. Thus, referring to PlayStation with its code name is illogical.

DC failure was truly unique. It had its fans, more than you can say for almost any failure, but they couldn't save it.
Maybe SEGA was too busy focusing on arcades, or really were stretched too thin with that sector, because not even Nintendo had much of an arcade presence. SEGA really should have dedicated themselves more to the home market, and maybe that was their failing. They never truly cared, corporate-wise. Otherwise, they should have merged with Sammy or whatever well before they launched.

Sega United I hope you're right.
You need to do an episode on what ruined EA. Right now, there's a lot of drama with Star Wars Battlefront II's microtransactions and randomized loot boxes, and it hadn't gotten that bad since Mass Effect 3's ending, the Sim City servers crashing while backed up by DRM, and multitudes of studios being bought, mismanaged, and eventually shut down by EA. Made even worse by the fact that EA shut down Visceral and prevented them from releasing a single-player Star Wars game, instead believing that an online multiplayer game with microtransactions like Star Wars Battlefront II would make even more money than just $60 per copy alone.
Simply, blame CEO Andrew Wilson for ultimately being th promoter of the modern MTs and Loot Box. Not the original creator, but the promoter (two different things)
Daniel Venetsky That’s what I’m thinking he should make a video about What Ruined EA or other gaming companies
I think it's a lot harder to make a video about this. SEGA fell to due a couple of very big poor decisions. The fall of EA was a very gradual thing. There aren't really any dramatic missteps or exciting events he can talk about.
Them buying up all kinds of companies is not unusual. It happens all the time.

Sega of Japan didn't make any decisions, their Parent Company CSK did.
It doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
So long story short, SEGA of Japan is the reason for the entirety of SEGA's failures. Got it.
Ironically, SEGA's feud with its different branches exists to this day. Yeah...
OH MY, YOUR HERE TO! But yes I agree Sega pride killed them, and it's sad to hear that Sega never really got over this problem. Screw Sega of Japan.
Sonic Badass The video popped up in my recommended and decided to give it a watch :).
I already knew about most of this before. And while SEGA's isn't around making consoles, they are at least keeping arcade-like games and the arcade spirit alive along with Platinum.
Because God help us, we need arcade games in this day and age, especially to counter balance the rise in popularity of "cinematic" games like TLOU or the upcoming new God of War game *shudders*
I see another brother of the TLOU is overrated club Imao.
No. Don't comment on something you know nothing about.
They are not. They had nothing to do with SEGA's failures.
Imagine sega going up against Microsoft and Sony AND Nintendo nowadays in the console market
Too many options, lol!!!
Maybe they would had more exclusives active than just Sonic.
they were just 7 months off from competing with the original xbox
But everything changed when PS2 Attacked
In theory they could considering they'd have Sonic as an exclusive, but it's just not going to happen now. The company doesn't have the resources. The only way it could happen is if one of the big 3 starts to fail and they ask SEGA to get on board with a new project, but the chances of that are very slim.
I helped with this one, woo! EVERYBODY'S SUPER SONIC RACING!

It would've probably been called the SEGA 64
that has a nice ring to it
"bling"
Clearly Me no the s64
Or the sega neptune. Since the controller was trident like.
And Sonic 64.
sounds way better than Dreamcast.
Sonic Mania took the bullet out of SEGA’s foot.
And then Sonic Forces shot it back in. Double-barrel shotgun.
Actually, that foot's gonna have to be amputated.
Lange not really if you think about it, for the sake of argument if Mania didn't exist Forces would have been your typical average Sonic game. Mania was a pleasant surprise to many hardcore players and Forces fun for the passionate fan base that at least had a fun character creation and good soundtrack. Far better then Sonic Boom at least (which I know isn't saying much but still)
StephySon That's exactly how I see it. Its still sad that SEGA has a HUGE library of characters and franchise to bank off from veterans or newcomers, but they never take those risks anymore. They are like a washed-out, 3rd party Nintendo, and that's incredibly depressing to me.
I think what he meant was that Sonic Mania managed to elevate the image of the Sonic franchise, and Sonic Forces went down again ...
I believe Forces cut off the foot instead of putting the bullet back in. Now all we need is a game recognized by all Sonic fans young and old alike to make SEGA a prosthetic foot.
These are some painful metaphors.
Trying to stop Nintendo is like trying to scale a 90 degree angle wall without any equipment!

Well you're kinda right. Nintendo didn't stop. It's just that Sega has managed to slow them down enough to become the video game market king for a while. Nintendo might have always slow down at some points, (for example their market decisions with Mario 3D All Stars), but they never really stopped.
@@phantomblue2798 they never had the intention to stop Nintendo. They had the intention to be the no.1 video game industry. And they succeed at.
Sega of Japan fucked things up. Tom Kalinske was a genius listening to all the things he brought to the company back then and they second guessed him. A mistake.
japanese "pride" killed SEGA.
Exactly, Japanese pride killed the company. Every single time that they denied Tom, they failed. When they listened to Tom in the beginning, they succeeded. I feel they knew he was right but pride was stronger. They'd rather fail by their own decision than succeed thanks to the americans.

And boy have they done some dumb stuff with him. Sometimes I ask myself why Sonic team keeps making these games if they keep screwing up Sonic in some way or another.

Sega made the Sonic games so much worse and didn't work on much else, putting all their attention on Sonic...

There was another handheld in 1995-2005. It’s called the sega pico. It’s a educational handheld.
to recite from wikipedia, "Powered by the same hardware used in the Sega Genesis, the physical shape of the Pico was designed to appear similar to a laptop. Included in the Pico is a stylus called the "Magic Pen" and a pad to draw on. Controlling the games for the system is accomplished either by using the Magic Pen like a mouse or by pressing the directional buttons on the console. The Pico does not include its screen or RF output, and instead must be connected to a monitor through Composite video or a VCR to be played on an RF screen. Touching the pen to the pad would either allow drawing or animate a character on the screen."

Beautiful telling of SEGA, let me tell you some -BEHIND THE SCENES of DREAMCAST DVD PLAYBACK-that Microsoft is not telling you (with good reason) as I was Field Application Engineer in regards to DVD playback on this project. I worked for The trailblazing Video Chip Manufacturer “C-Cube Microsystems” (wiki it) we were the best. Until our series of bad decisions and this story was the first of many. As you know, The Sega Dreamcast is known for running an optimised version of Windows CE (with DirectX) as an operating system. It was developed between Microsoft and Sega over a period of two years. In 1996, we were approached by Microsoft to get our DVx chipset to work in WinCE. Which would had given the DreamCast the most versatile technology to grow with the future for years to come, for our chip was software programmable MPEG CODEC, it was also a DV CODEC with future abilities to Transcode MPEG>DV & DV>MPEG in real-time. (I was not at C-Cube then) So at that time both Microsoft and C-Cube were unsuccessful in getting it to work & could not make Dreamcast launch deadlines. So MPEG capabilities was shelved by Microsoft.
1999 when Microsoft needed to dust off our reference boards and get back to it, I was assigned to the job for sole support on the project. C-Cube would not assign any other resources other than me. Me and my co-worker, Scott Murnan, were the odd balls working on THEN small projects like DVD Playback in Laptops and Car/Airplane headrests. While C-Cube as a whole working concentrating on Panasonic, STB’s and countless other big $ partners/products. The Windows CE team was now led by Richard Russell. In charge of the Dreamcast SDK and working directly with SEGA Japan. Richard and his team were awesome & I did what I could. After only, I wanna day, 7 months of my assistance, Richard and his team got the DVx to playback in WinCE, but needed more hardware from us for QA and continue development. We did not have hardware available and would have to manufacturer a small run would would be difficult and pricy. Richard flew to Milpitas, CA and camped out until we gave him a yes that we would forego the expense. After days of deliberation, the powers-at-be at C-Cube made a decision, “NO” stating “Microsoft Will Never Buy Chips from Us”. Which was true. So Microsoft won either way, because they could in all honesty SAY “WinCE had DVD Playback” however for SEGA It would me Microsoft would need another chipset & start over, not feasible, This Dreamcast with DVD never came. So at least when it came to competing against PS2 you could say, it died because of Microsoft OS limitations, but really it was C-Cube that killed it, unaware of the potential.
C-Cube also killed DVD in cars and airplanes thinking no one would want DVD in cars (Lol) don’t remember the company we were helping with that. But obviously that was a huge Market. Intel processors became powerful enough to use Software DVD playback, so C-Cube lost that market as well. 2002 we were bought out by LSI Logic. Losing all true talent that knew the DVx, LSI sold technology to Magnum semiconductor and probably sits on shelf.
Who gained from this whole ordeal? Microsoft shifted gears to develop X-Box, All great talent from C-Cube went to Ambarella Inc, Nvidia, Amazon, Broadcom and elsewhere. Richard Russell also at Nvidia.
Thank you for letting me share this great yet disappointing story. This was one of my proudest projects to work on and my biggest regrets

Wow, thanks for the insight and your inside story. That must’ve been pretty frustrating on your end. Even though it didn’t pan out the way it was intended, it was a noble effort..
Very interesting insight, I like how some of the former employees and engineers/develops are commenting and sharing their stories. I was a "gamer" durring this period and I loved the genesis, games like NBA Jam and Mortal Combat just were cool as a kid back than vs. Nintendo. the LAST system I ever bought was the Dreamcast ironically, then I got into other hobbies over gaming. I lived in Japan for 8 years and this story is typical of Japan Inc, they don't listen to reason and dont understand outside Markets, it's how Samsung took over dominance from Sony and how Japan continues to decline in Asia.
Wow! just wow!
I used to do printing for LSI Logic in Santa Clara back in the mid-80s. Always wondered what they were about. All those companies were a mystery back then.
What the fuck are you talking about?
I think that the 32X played a larger role in ending Sega's hardware line than this video implies.
If they worked with flare technologies on what would become the Atari Jaguar, and designed in an adaptor that included a zilog z80 to add backwards compatability by working with the Motorola 68000, they could have had a buyback/used sale program to expand G/MD access, instead of trying to improve it. This could have bought more time to develop a true 64 bit system.
Sega was the WCW and Nintendo was WWF of the video game world. They had the talent and the ideas but for some reason, BAD moves were made that went to their downfall.
Haha could you imagine if Sega was actually run like WCW?
