Oh Paper Mario 64, what a wonderful game it is, all the time and care put to it shows that. This game was my first ever rpg and everytime I play it I feel joy beyond comprehension. Despite how much TTYD, Super, Bug Fables and other great indies expanded its concept and ideas, this still is my favorite Paper Mario.
@@fossforever512 TTYD is my favorite game of all time. I love the first one too. I also really enjoyed bug fables which is in the same style as paper mario
Same!! Im a big fan of the Paper Mario trilogy, each one has its flaws but also manage to be super charming. I haven't played most of them in years yet remember vividly most of the playthrough.
I love this game! It is near perfect! One of Nintendo's finest! It was the first time the world of Mario was given depth and the gameplay was so satisfying and offer room for different strategies!
Paper Mario 64 is my Favourite game ever. Every time I replayed it there was something new for me to do, new places to go, new badges to get, and using all of the skills I picked up late in my last playthrough at the start of this one.
I agree with all this. It was also great in being it’s own thing, it was amazing for the player to go around and basically EXPLORE. However I’m more of a story guy so super paper Mario is still my favorite
playing mario rpg and paper mario 64 back to back, paper mario definitely took alot from that game (the credits being a parade comes to mind for me) and honestly… thats not a bad thing! its a prime example of copying someones homework but adding a couple of your own answers into it
I always loved this game's arts style, it is so colorful and vibrant with it its lighting. It makes me question wether the emphasis on paper should really be a thing in Paper Mario.
I’m so glad I stumbled on this channel. I love video game history, especially in regards to Mario and Sonic so this channel is basically a godsend for me. You’re hilarious, quite informative (Despite me already knowing a big chunk of the info talked about, I like learning new trivia bits that might’ve escaped me), your voice is easy to listen to and your editing skills are sublime. I’m so glad your channel is on a steady increase because you definitely deserve it. Been binging all of your videos and have enjoyed all of them so far, including this one. Keep going, man. You’ve got something great here. ^_^
I love how you always find new angles to approach game topics we’re familiar with. (: mark of a good video game video is when you end up learnin’ something new.
I'm not sure if other RPGs do this better or anything, but one thing I really like about Paper Mario's combat is its strategy. It's always great to figure out the most effective way to take out a given group of enemies, and every decision you make counts.
What's appealing about the system in this, TTYD, Bug Fables, etc., is that with all of the relatively low numbers involved, it's much more feasible than in other RPGs to plan out entire battles in your head beforehand.
Man, original Paper Mario, and Thousand Year Door was amazing game. Super Paper Mario from Wii, are awesome since I enjoy those games. But however later in 2012 through now, I avoiding Sticker Star, Color Splash and new one for Switch because I honestly didn't enjoy those today games.
This is a great retrospective of Paper Mario 64's development, I've always been so interested with PM64's wild development history. I'd love to see you do a retrospective on Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga at some point too.
I liked how you mentioned YT Poops. It takes me back to my youth during the early days of UA-cam. Square and Nintendo did get on good terms again with seeing games like Fortune Street, FF Crystal Chronicles, GBA Final Fantasy Tactics, and the DS game Mario Hoops 3 on 3 having Final Fantasy characters. Thank you for the great Paper Mario history video!
9:37 Calling the 64DD a "floppy disk" system is a little inaccurate. The DD used a proprietary type of Magneto Optical disks, which is closer to a MiniDisc than a floppy disk.
It's too bas the new Paper Mario games are so mediocre in comparison and lacking what the old games had like original character designs and a good story. Hopefully the next one brings it back on track.
Technicaly Kirbys Dream land 3 in 1997 and frogger in 1998 were the last on SNES in NA while Fire Emblem Trica 776 in 2000 in JP was last for the whole thing
Very awesome video!! Satisfying, you could say :P I'd love to hear about the development of the rest of the paper mario games!! Something I especially liked is that you touched on the speficic PEOPLE behind the development and how they came into the picture regarding the game's progress, I don't think thats talked about enough, especially in later entries of paper mario like ttyd, spm, ss, etc.
It's impressive how big your channel has gotten after uploading what like seven videos? Anyways a lot of this that you point out is stuff I already knew but you explained it so well and will the new stuff was pretty exciting too! Awesome video!
Actually, using cartridges is one of the reasons why Nintendo's console business was able to survive during the 6th generation. CD'S were cutting edge technology that they couldn't produce on their own.
If Nintendo games are manufactured as some special "nintendo only" peripheral (Cartridges,DS Games, Wii U cards, gamecube cds) then the publisher's have to pay liscensing fee per unit made. Blew my mind its smart I guess maybe a little malicious as it can't be that much but I'm sure it adds up. Also anyone remember gpoing to cheatplanet to look up the recipes for this game? We had just gotten a printer as kids and decided to print out all 54 pages on Paper Mario. Good times :)
This is my first time finding you in my suggestions and I got to say this is a pleasant surprise to my afternoon to find somebody that's good great presentation
Paper Mario is an instant classic for me, I’d really love to play it on my original N64, if only the retro game market didn’t want $100 just for a loose copy.
Unfortunately, my Sega fanboyism at the time caused me to avoid the N64 (when it was new) like the plague, causing me to miss out on the first Paper Mario, so when new Saturn releases dried up in 1998, I switched to PlayStation! My anti-N64 stance was so big that when I had a meltdown over a PlayStation game I rented in April 1999, instead of switching to N64, I decided to get my Mega Drive back instead! I eventually dropped my anti-Nintendo stance, leading me to get a GameCube in 2003! Got Paper Mario TTYD for my birthday the following year (to make up for my US import Nintendo DS not arriving in time), and during the first exposition before the game begins, I imagined Luigi saying his lines in his 90s DiC voice! (Mama Luigi did NOT factor into this, it was just the voice I most associated with Luigi)
SMRPG and Pokemon Blue were my first forays into JRPGs... And FF7 with my old pal, but I didn't own a PS1 at the time. I think Nintendo's Mario quirks and whimsy, paired with platformer-adjacent gameplay and timed hits, made the genre accessible to a lot of Westerners. And at the best time too: Square's golden age. Paper Mario ensured that Mario RPGs would stay.
Man, youre growing so fast. I was here since day 1. I will be there when all of your videos go viral :) Edit: Btw you should make some videos about the zelda franchise.
Nice video, but (8:18) the action commands idea was taken from Super Mario RPG 1, even though the button you need to press is not visible on screen in that game. To see what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/8d0r0hndsEU/v-deo.html (at time 2:10). However, it's easier and more satisfying in Paper Mario.
If Sony didn't design said contract to be rejected, things could've been interesting. Instead, Sony decided to create the 'Habsburg Ultimatum' effect behind closed doors!
Don't any of u remeber the paper mario game on the Nintendo switch its called paper mario origami king I think its pretty cool it changes battling to be more puzzle based but it makes it more interesting also the artwork and design is beautiful and the story is interesting and the origami twist is a pretty neat idea
Yeah it's not my favorite one but my second favorite. My first favorite is paper mario a thousand years door it was my first paper mario game on the gamecube.
Really wish Nintendo, Tanabe and Intelligent Systems would go back to what this original vision for the series was instead of focusing on advanced visual effects with realistic paper materials, almost exclusively core Mario characters with very strictly regulated designs, the few original character having to directly relate to paper, and gameplay that reinvents itself every single game. You made a point to say that PM64 went out of its way to stick to the core Mario cast but I disagree. It focused on a traditional Mario plot but it had plenty of original characters AND even the partner designs are not allowed in the newer games now. Compared to modern Paper Mario, this game is original and creative af in terms of its characters. They're all organic and fit nicely into the Mario world too.
I think the Virtual boy is considered a joke console as even in the Nintendo NY store it’s displayed with the other joke consoles between the SNES and N64.
Ive played every paper mario except paper mario 64. I tried to emulate it on my Wii but it is unplayable and crashes a lot. Maybe someday I will be able to play it.
paper mario isn't a pioneer in non-random encounters. heck it wasn't even the pioneer for that in mario rpgs since the first one also had that. but by that point grandia was probably out, plus a bunch others.
I really want to replay Paper Mario but I'm not paying 50 for NSO, I'll try to find a N64 (if it's still possible) and a copy of Paper Mario (also if it's still possible)
Same, I was so young when I played it that I had to have my dad do all the action commands.
It definitely still holds up pretty well!
this was also the first rpg and the first paper mario game i had ever played, for that it's my no.1 in terms of the series
Same, it has a charm to it that isn't like anything else.
My favorite too. And that’s not a bash towards TTYD which I also love.
