I've been drawing as a hobby for years wondering why my drawings never turned out as good other people's. You just blew my mind with the complimentary color trick. I've been using black and grey wondering why it always turned out so ugly!
Even more fabulous tips. One from my world….I sharpen my pencils with a scalpel. Makes the point extremely sharp when you need it, you waste less pencil if you do it correctly, and it gives a great surface that helps pack the pigment in. Make sure you use a whetstone on your scalpel, or you could do even better and get a flint scalpel. I make my own every once in a while with flint from our property. Cheers! 🍻
Hey, I'm usually graphite artist and I've been putting the thought of purchasing coloured pencils on and off for years but finally I've decided to purchase a good pack and whilst I've been waiting for them to arrive, I've gotten anxious coz i keep thinking I might not be up for it and the number one cause for this lingering thought was knowing how to achieve realism with them based off of a limited palette and it kind of makes me wish I would dive into digital art sooner coz duh you get unlimited colours and textures and what not. But this video has seriously helped me and i absolutely can't wait for them to arrive now! This video was exactly what i needed! Thank you!!
I'd be just as anxious as you as I wait for my new art supplies to arrive. 😆 Even cheaper sets are great to get started with, and there are many benefits to using physical materials instead of digital applications when starting your art journey: you learn how to mix colors to create new ones, you have more finite control with the various hand positions when using your materials, and you learn different techniques like burnishing. I'm happy to hear this video helped you!
Omg this video is so useful for a beginner like me!!!! Thank you so much and I hope there will be more tutorials like this about colored pencils from you ❤
Exactly what I looked for! It's a big mood for my drawings to look cool before adding colours and then turning out like a drawing 5-yr old could do (monochrome was literally an only option then) so thanks a lot!
Good question! I like to start with the brightest areas of the artwork first and color layers to build up shades. A helpful way to tell where highlights (and shades) are, at a high level, is to squint while looking at your reference. This blurs the reference and makes the brightest and darkest areas stand out. Find the light areas and start there, then layer your shading around those shapes. Just remember to keep comparing your art with your reference throughout. With this squinting trick, you can also lightly draw shapes for the major highlighted and shaded areas, then use them as guides as you shade.
@@RTIFEX this is actually really helpful, thanks!! I'd love to see more in depth videos on it as well if you're ever interested in making something like that:)
There's a lot more to it. You've selectively chosen certain areas to cover with a lighter tone, without explaining the technique behind that. It would have been helpful for this character. You are well beyond us noobs.
Cool. Looks like I've had the right idea. Thanks for the tip. How would you recommend going about the same technique if you are working with a limited color palette?
Hey! I loved video but I do have to ask... what is the point of charcole pencils if you can shade with normal colored pencils? Sorry I'm very new to art and drawing so I'm not very educated 😅
the same reason different kinds of paint exist. they're different mediums. you can shade with literally any medium that involves applying pigment to something.

Im writing a book called the big book of art and your video really helped me explain coloured pencils and how they work :) great video
How awesome! Best of luck to you with your book.
yo im a bit late xd but if the book is finished, where can I get it?
The burnishing tip was handy. I've always had angst about pushing hard into the paper for some reason.
The best two minutes in my life❤❤❤
Major help! I really needed this since I started drawing on paper instead of digitally! Thanks dude!
I found the cheat code guys. This video is amazing!
You know how good you're drawing is that nobody believe you actually draw it
So THATS what a white pencil is used for!
They also help make skin colour, just like white pastel colour
This video really helped! I'm so happy with the result ❤
